[Q] Why do I have to buy it in a store? - Moto X Q&A

This doesn't make sense to me. Usually the appeal of buying from an AT&T store is that you get to walk out with a phone in your hand. Instead you get a scratch off card and have to go order online.
Why can't I just order online in the first place (the custom versions, not the black or white phones)?
I tried to ask the associate who was ringing me up and she couldn't give me a straight answer.
-First she said it was because they were customized and if you wanted just a normal android or iphone you could buy those online. This doesn't make sense because you already have to go online to build the phone...why not just pay for it there too.
-Then she said it was for privacy/security/identity theft reasons...otherwise anyone could say they were you and get a phone. This is also an absurd explanation...if you can sell other phones online securely, then you can sell the customized version securely.
My only guess is that the stores are paid on commission and complained to AT&T that they would lose money since everyone would prefer the custom option and not bother coming to the store...

you might not be far from the truth here...

I think it was to make sure people get a hands on approach with the phone. It's unique. Not to mention the colors on a screen don't represent the true colors in person. I'm glad they made me look at it. Otherwise I'd have ordered the wrong color scheme

I dunno...the store I bought at last night didn't even have the full display. They just had a white model on hand and I had played with a black model on friday at another store...but they didn't even have the phone out yet (even though it was past lunch time), they had to go grab a demo model for me.
Had to ride up to another AT&T store that had the full colors display...but their display had everything except for woven black.
Seemed funny that the serial number and IMEI were on the card. Does that mean that they have to go find that specific device in texas and add my color plates? Usually serial numbers are attached to the manufactured internals and not assigned to something when it has a cosmetic layer applied.

I'm thinking a reason they want you to go to the store is to make sure you get the correct phone for your carrier. As of right now AT&T has the exclusivity to Moto Maker. However, in the coming months other carriers will have access. This seems like a good way to ensure that someone doesn't accidentally choose a X from Verizon when they are on AT&T. The card will direct you to the correct carrier. Although, hopefully in the future you can get the redeem codes by email instead.

blah. Looks like today they stopped requiring you to go to the store. Looks like I wasted my time traversing the city yesterday. Might take longer to get delivered but I'm going out of town thursday morning (and I doubt last night's order will be delivered tomorrow) so I wouldn't see the phone until tuesday either way.
Maybe they've run out of the little nfc clip gimmick though...so at least I get something out of going to the store (besides paying $10 in city taxes that wouldn't be charged on an online purchase).

As of today, you can buy it contract free on the Moto X's site, as well as on contract. You don't have to go to the store (though its not like trying to escape from North Korea). So recheck the Moto Maker's site or whatever its called, and order, they claim 8 days.

The other reason to get the card or order it from the store is if you don't like the phone you can take it right back to att. If you order it from moto site you have to return it back to moto. That is huge for me

What is the availability like?

I'm planning to get one for my gf for christmas but i'll only have a weekend in the US to purchase one and have to make sure I get one.
Are they in stock at AT&T stores nationwide? I'm going to be in south florida (miami/ft. lauderdale area) and just want to make sure. I tried ordering on AT&T's website but you can't purchase it without a contract, I hope it's not like that in store too.
Any suggestions?
Simply put, are they in stock everywhere or will I have a hard time finding one?

Hard to say, I bought mine the first the day it came out. The AT&T store where I got it only had one (the one I bought) but maybe in miami they´ll have more because it's a larger city!!!
I didn't have to get a contract, but some people have reported they were forced to get a contract at AT&T retail stores

I had same experience, it looks like most AT&T stores had 1-2 quantities, best to call if interested maybe you can get a $100 reduction due to employee false advertising (a mistake made during my transaction but honored)
Thanks for the replies... This will be the weekend the make it happen so *fingers crossed*
At least there isn't a mad rush for them it doesn't seem.
As others have suggested call ahead. I went in yesterday not thinking they'd have them. They haven't gotten their display units in and only had two in stock. The salesman said since November they only sold one. Most people don't know about the camera yet and Samsung hasn't done its national campaign yet.
I'm in NY, had to hit 3 different stores - 1 didn't even carry it, 1 tries to sell me a contract to get it, in the third store I asked for a manager because I wanted to buy it full retail without a plan, finally walked away with it in my bag. Oh yea, i love this thing!
Generally you can go to the AT&T website, find the Galaxy Camera, click on "Check In-Store Availability", and then give the Zip Code for where you are interested. Any that say "OUT OF STOCK" are indeed, out or never had. For "IN STOCK" it is best to call first unless you don't mind driving. Stock is based on the previous day's updates, and you never know who might have been there first.
Well, just to update everyone, it was a no go.
None of the stores in the Miami/Ft.Lauderdale area had them in stock.
Thankfully they have started popping up on amazon so i went ahead and got it there. Also kinda happy that I got the unlocked one also since i wouldn't be using it on AT&T anyways.
So the camera is with a friend of mine and i'll be getting it next Friday.

For those going to the Sprint Store

People who are going to the Sprint store to upgrade to the HTC One should know there is an issue with the system that is preventing the phone from being seen as discount available. They had to call the Sprint National Service Center to put in a manual discount on the account. I was told there were multiple people who tried and had the same problem.
The reason I am posting this is that you shouldn't expect it to be a 5-10 minute upgrade. It took over an hour for me. Loving the phone, so it was worth it.
I got mine without any serious issue. Anytime she tried to print off a receipt her computer would crash. They used another and all was well.
I had no issues.. they didnt get the $100 off instand but manager just over wrote it .... in and out in 15 min before work. Also if u mention that u get extra $50 invoice (currently online only) credit for buisness accounts... they might put that in too. I got that as well.

that credit towards the business account ?
Yes, basically a fam account under a tax id. But the discount should still apply to any account with any monthly discount associated with it, ie student. The credit goes towards ur next bill... its still something making my phone only $50 without htc trade in.
http://sprint.p.delivery.net/m/p/nxt/dev/wdyw.asp
Enter any email ending with edu... and it will give u a coupon code SAVE50.... add the phone to cart and print the cart without actually ordering and take it to the store and they should take care of it.
I do have a pdf when it shiwed the htc one for 99.. let me know if u need it.

It's $199.99 but if he's correct then you can get it with that extra $50 off at $149.99. There's no way to get an upgrade with the phone only costing $50 without the HTC Trade in. If so the Sprint store is only 1/4 mile from my work and Im heading over to buy mine and then Ill cancel it with Newegg.
I'm just looking for the cheapest price, though I don't want to wait an entire week so that's why I chose the Newegg method. Lucky enough for me, I dont have to pay the 36 activation fee. Thank you, Sprint business account.

the Save50 is what is being referred to it is a $50 credit applied to the account. But the $100 instant he is referring to and getting that as a transaction override instore is of even more significance if he managed to get the phone at $99 like a new customer rather than the $199 thru Sprint.com upgrade screw..
I got a new line.. ported in a number... so yes the phone is $50 before htc trade in and -$50 If I do the trade in.

$450 instant saving? so the phone is only 99.99? not the 199.99? is it cheaper for business account?
Tried it but when I entered the promo code it said "The promotional code does not apply to any items in your shopping cart. Check the code and try again"
Any idea?
EDIT* Looks like it doesn't work for upgrades.
bummer, sprint sure treat loyal customers pretty well don't they
I went in to the Sprint store this morning to pick up my preorder and I would say I had a very pleasant experience. I dont know if this was the $50 discount spoke about earlier, but without saying anything, the phone rang up at $149. I am upgrading 3 months early, so I paid a $100 UpgradeNow fee. I traded in my Epic Touch 4G for $75 and had the $50 Sprint gift card that I had to buy to hold my preorder, so all in all, I paid $139 in store today. Not too shabby for being impatient and wanting to get rid of my Samsung as quick as possible.
Also, she got my gmail address because she said they were going to send me a $25 Google Play Store card. Nice little bonus :good:
I went to a Sprint store earlier this morning. They had no dummy phones to look at, they had no phones to sell, and they also had no idea that the phone was even released today. (I'm guessing it wasn't a corporate store, but you wouldn't know from looking at it (it's just south of Houston, TX.).
I told them "Well, I know Best Buy has them; I just didn't want to drive all the way over there...".
He said "Well, I'm sure they DON'T, otherwise we would at least have a shipment scheduled or something."
20 minutes later, I was doing the paperwork at BB, with my slick new One in my hands...(It was 199+ tax on a line that was eligible for an upgrade.).
How do these so-called "Sprint" stores even manage to get any business if they literally have no idea of a device's existence on a release day?
Anyway, I'm happy as a clam with my white one, FWIW.
I have and probably will keep my Note 2, just to have, and to mess around with different Roms, and also for its screen size, but this One will definitely be my daily driver. The difference in the builds/the quality of the devices is like night and day.

You guys don't even want to hear my story. So I pre ordered from Lets Talk like some of you may have. I get the notification that it won't be here till sometime next week, so I'm like "OK I'll cancel it" as my local store had some in stock. Cancelled it. Went in this morning to a store right when the doors open. They pull up my account and say there's no upgrade for me. So I end up calling Lets Talk to verify if my order had been cancelled. Lets just say that I've been calling Lets Talk and Sprint from 9am-1pm trying to figure out wtf was going on. I finally decide to call Lets Talk one more time. The rep I spoke to said that the order was cancelled when the item was in activation and picking, so they had to manually deactivate the device. Around 130pm when I'm about to leave I receive a call back from Lets Talk saying the upgrade has been reset. Just to make sure I called Sprint customer service and the local Sprint store just to double check that the upgrade was there. Indeed it was so I rushed to pick it up as I had to be at work at 220pm. Got my phone opened it at work and that's my CRAZY CRAZY story. I hope none of you guys had to go through any of that.

T-mobile customers out there and Google Pre-Order...

I am a new Tmo customer and wanting the N6, was with you all refreshing and trying to preorder last week. I am in a torn on what I want to do right now, trying to figure out if I even want to try to order from google today or Tmo next wed.
?'s (1) Is Play store support that much better then Tmo's support???
(2) How are Tmo's online orders. Want a midnight blue 64gb, so I will have to order online.
(3) Does anyone know when orders usually go live online at tmo?
(4) Thinking I want to insure phone, is Jump better then off carrier options for insurance and what are some good options there?
I'm sure there are many other things to consider, so I'm basically trying to start a conversation on pros and cons of each route. Tmo is releasing next wed, so wondering if I'm being an impulsive, impatient child trying to order today. I have absolutely zero experience ordering from tmo or google.

1.) Depends if you want to ship your device in for RMA or not. With tmo support you get an overnight replacement same as google.
2.) Not sure when their online orders go live but if you want that version online should be fine unless their servers get bogged by users. I believe the iPhone release broke their servers . you can also call them and then can order it for you
3.) Jump offers you extended warranty past the one year google offers. Which means after the year if they still have return devices to send you they can send them to you if you have issues with your phone. Jump also allows you to trade in that device for another in the future . I'd still research other insurance providers in case you are looking for other things. I never order online and rather walk u to a store just because if something wrong happens I can walk right in, get it exchanged for a new one without having to wait for another in the mail. Also I can just pay for it same day and use it same day.

Thinking I need to just wait. There are a lot of other factors that lean me towards waiting too. I already have our tax exempt status registered through tmobile, with google, have to pay tax then send stuff in to get it refunded afterwards. Was thinking about ordering through google and then just canceling if able to preorder through tmo that day. Seems to me like, other than being able to relax and know you have one ordered, there is no real advantage to ordering from google as opposed to tmo.

Yes and No....I think.....From what I have taken from around the web, android 5.0 lets carriers install their apps automatically when their particular sim is inserted, however, it is my understanding that these can be deleted as well.
So my understanding is, both phones are the same, they only change once the sim is put in it. So if tmo n6's come with sim already in it, then they may come with bloat, but it will be able to be deleted. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination, so, I could be mistaken here, but this is how I interpreted what I have read.
Correct. The only app downloaded on our N6 is My T-Mobile when you turn on your device. It is deletable though.
anyone hear any info on a 100% positive release date in stores? from what everyone is saying and this http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news/t...-to-its-data-strong-network-this-november.htm posted in tmobiles official blog site, november 12th seems to be the day. but i called about 10 different tmobile stores in pittsburgh today and none of them can give a definitive answer as to the 12th being the day that stores will begin to sell them. the nexus 4 and 5 were both sold out on their respective release dates in stores here and i don't want to miss out on it once again. i'm hoping that a pre-order will go live or they will notify me before then. 2 stores that i called actually told me that they would go live on tmobile.com on the 12th but stores won't be getting them until the 15th or 16th(saturday or sunday) which basically tells me that they don't know what they're talking about. i'm itching to use my jump upgrade and i'm not completely decided on whether i'm getting the note 4 or nexus 6. i guess i'll wait this out a little longer.

There is no way that stores will have it available before Google ships those pre-orders. The Galaxy Gear S was suppose to release today to all carriers but after checking with 4 local T-Mobile stores in my area none had it yet. So I really highly doubt they'll have it on the 12th.

Same here. This phone is amazing, totally worth $150, but even more awesome for $50.
I just got done flashing back to 10c firmware and I'm trying to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. Looking for a stock ROM without all the bloat - CM11 sounds awesome but it looks like there are still a few issues (no video recording/playback and camera not taking pretty pictures - though I have to read and see if any of that has been fixed).
Well that was fun.
Just got back from a local Best Buy here in Las Vegas, I called ahead of time to check stock and to verify their "Price Match Guarantee" thing - I could have just ordered it from T-Mobile's website but, why wait a week for it to ship if I can get it tonight, right?
So, on the phone they try and blow me off constantly: the first girl I spoke with said they wouldn't price match, the second said they wouldn't price match if it's not in stock, then I got someone to ask the Manager (who would not speak with me on the phone, oddly enough) and he said they wouldn't honor the Price Match Guarantee on any cellular phone even in spite of that being totally inaccurate. I finished the call by saying "You'll honor it when I get there..." and then promptly ended the call.
Go to the store a half hour later, get the second phone from the shelf - the first one the girl handed me didn't even have a phone in the box, oops... - and then went to Customer Service and asked for the Manager, who came out from the back area and wondered just what I wanted (it was like 5 mins to closing time).
I said I need to price match the LG L90 with T-Mobile's current full retail pricing online at $49.99 and then he basically went into full damage control mode and did like 15 rebuttals to me about why they couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't match the price: he whipped out his smartphone and started doing research, checked the T-Mobile site but kept hitting the "Add to cart" button before the page even loaded and I kept saying "You have to let the page load first so you can see the actual price."
He just kept at it for nearly 10 mins trying to show me it required activation - I replied "Nope, it's the full retail price at $49.99 and they are offering you the SIM activation kit for another $15 (which is crazy since the L90 comes with a brand new unactivated SIM in the box, I mean really). He kept sticking to his story that it required you to activate it and I kept saying "No, you're wrong there because it's a prepaid device and if it was in stock in the stores I could get it and not deal with any of that and activate it at home when I wanted." He jumped on the "not in stock" thing and I said no, they're out of stock in the local stores here (which they are when I called to ask) but this is an online price for an online retailer and he knew I wasn't going to back down.
I said "Look, there's two outcomes here: 1) you sell me the price matched smartphone and I leave a happy customer and continue doing business with Best Buy in the future, or 2) you don't honor your own policy for the Price Match Guarantee, I leave pissed off, angry, and frustrated, I go home and order it from T-Mobile online for the same price, you lose a customer forever, and then I hand-write (not email) a nice detailed letter to the Vice-President for Customer Relations at Best Buy Corporate about my experience here where I'm 100% in the right and within 48 hours of his Executive Assistant getting the letter I'll get a phone call, an apology, and at least a $50 Best Buy Gift Card for the hassle you ended up causing me tonight."
He didn't like that very much, nor do I think he likes me either but, for a change this customer actually was right.
So I got the phone for the $49.99+tax as I expected when I walked in, proof below...
Tips if you want 'em:
- Best Buy's Price Match Guarantee states that in order for the price match to be available, the actual web page at Best Buy's website must say "PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE" on the page just above the price - the LG L90 does say that so, that's one
- If you read deeper into the Best Buy Price Match Guarantee guidelines there's a disclaimer about contract cell phones - they are excluded from the price match guarantee directly - and I made it clear that I knew this and that this is not a contract phone, it's a prepaid phone - that's two
So the Manager had no actual ground to stand on and was left with no choice but to honor the Price Match Guarantee as written on their website and also on a flyer in their stores (you have to ask to see it, actually, they don't post it for their own silly reasons).
Anyway, just earlier tonight I was looking at craigslist for an L90 believe it or not and decided to check in here for info about any updates, root, bootloader unlocking, etc, and lo and behold I caught this thread so, thank you for sharing the information, OP...
So far I like it overall. Coming from a G2 it's a bit of a letdown of course but, after some tweaking and other playing around I'm sure I'll like it even more.

I am surprisingly happy with this phone. I thought it would be a big step back from my galaxy s4 but I am pretty happy with it. My s4 had sim card issues.
My biggest complaint is that it is not 4g LTE.

I'm with you. I shelved my G3 for the past couple of weeks.

I think the cheaper price point will bring more users, probably not many more people developing. Either way good price for the phone.
I believe the only negative impact would end up falling on LG as opposed to T-Mo as LG has allowed T-Mobile to cripple the device with the 10e firmware update. Be forewarned, if you get it now, it'll have that firmware pre-installed and it's a fuss to get it rolled back to 10c to root and then another pain to be able to access a recovery.
I able to get this phone from my work. (Big retail box chain in US. Guess what? They price match!) I liked around the specs for this and was pleasantly surprised about the performance for the price. I walked out with the phone for under $100 and am happy with this device. Always Always look at competitor pricing and find a place that can give you guarantees. Sorry about that terrible experience @br0adband!
Regardless this is a great phone with great specs at a great price, MSRP or not. I might even learn a thing and try my own mods if it isn't rocket science!

128GB models available anywhere?

I've called around to several Verizon stores in my area, and they all say that the 128GB will not be available in either Edge or non-Edge until May 1. The Verizon website says the same thing.
Has anyone on Verizon successfully received a 128GB model yet? If so, what's the trick?

I preordered mine on 4-1 and it's supposed to ship tomorrow 4-17. The wait has been killing me! For whatever reason the 128gb models seem to have been on backorder or something.

Yea, it's hard to wait, but maybe it's a good thing. By May 1, they hopefully will have worked out all the screen-defect issues. I just want to walk into a store and pick one up and inspect it on the spot, rather than have them mail it out to me and go through that whole charade of returning and exchanging.
Preordered my 128GB Edge on 4/1 and finally got tracking number today. Will be delivered on Monday!

Just asking again: Has anyone bought a 128GB edge in store anywhere?
I just had lunch with a friend of mine who works in a Verizon store as a sales manager there. He told me that the 128GB models were going to be few and far between in the stores because a majority of people coming in didn't need that much storage. A vast majority of the S6's they are selling only have 32gb or 64gb at the most. Its very rare that someone come in off the street and ask for 128gb. If they do, then they point them to the website because it will get fulfilled much faster that way.
In short, if you want one of these things, just put in an order on the website and you will get one a lot faster. Otherwise, if you are determined to pick one up in store, start calling around to all the stores in your area now. If you find one that has one, then ask them to hold it for you and go down and get it. You will be very lucky.

Thanks a lot cbdudek. That's very helpful information. I was only hoping to buy one in store so that I could immediately inspect it for scratches and return it if necessary. I'm just going to hope that those issues have been resolved or reduced since the scratch thread has died down a bit.

I can confirm his information. A local VZW store manager (that i've known my whole life) said they were basically told they wouldn't be getting any in the store. Might be different at upscale urban locations, but not here in suburbia.

Thanks. No different at "upscale" urban locations either. Apparently, Verizon has a 3-story "Verizon Experience Store" (who the hell knew?) right on Michigan Avenue (a/k/a The Mag Mile) in Chicago--which apparently carries all sorts of accessories and products that normal Verizon's don't carry--and even they don't have it. Of course, they all have 128GB iPhones. F*&#ing A. So frustrating.
Richmond, VA area... No 128GB in the local half dozen stores. I had received my first S6 Edge via preorder but had the screen rotate bug. Went to a local store to return and reorder (Not exchange risking refurbished phone). After 1.5 hour wait on Sunday, it took them another 45 minutes to process the return and they couldn't ever figure out how to process the repurchase at the same price I had online despite no less than 12 trips to the "manager". I gave up on the reorder and went home. BTW, I had already moved my service back to my old phone via tech support on Saturday and factory wiped the return phone. I made this real simple for them... I thought!
Online it took me exactly 2 minutes and 47 seconds to arrange the reorder. At least the store did the return properly so that I had the upgrade credit reinstated. Target ship date 5/1. Received shipping notification today and I will have the replacement tomorrow 5/29...All good! Let's just hope that I have no scratches or repeating rotate bug.!
Lesson for Verizon if they are listening... Your in store experience just plain sucks and needs some serious attention. I will never ever ever go through that again. BTW Verizon, this is the voice of a customer whose records with you ONLY goes back to year 2000. Actual linkage goes back to 1985 with Cellular One.... (Acquisition, acquisition, etc..)
I was told that I could not guarantee a brand new phone if I exchanged online and that the only way to insure I would not get refurbished was to go through the store process I suffered. Never again! I will push and escalate of something like this happens in the future. Anything to avoid "The store". Verizon.. ..Give online (AKA Low cost to you) users the same capabilities as if they go into the store! "Can you hear me now?"
