roaming on ATT 920 flashed to Rogers GDR2 - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed my ATT 920 to the Rogers GDR2/Amber rom and now I'm noticing the Triangle icon a lot which means i roaming on another network. Before flashing I have never had this. I do have bad Att recepition in my area and would often get no cell reception. The phone tile shows that I'm on ATT. Is there any way to find out what network im actually connected to? My phone isn't unlocked and I have the AP and cellular setting pointed to Att 3G. I have data roaming turned off but im afraid im going to get hit with roaming talk/text charges if that exist with att.

You will not get roaming charges when you are physically on your home network, regardless what the phone tells you.
The reason why it shows roaming is probably because the firmware is set to use Rogers as home network and anything else is roaming.
Another reason why you may get bad reception maybe Rogers ROM does not have all the baseband for AT&T activated/optimized.
You can try to re flash to AT&T with dead phone flash and see if it makes a difference.

Adding home (non-roaming) network

I live in Canada and have a Fido SIM card. When Rogers and Fido merged, the old Fido network ID (302-370) was made defunct so that the only GSM network available is the Rogers one (302-720).
As I am a Fido customer, it means that my Kaiser believes that it is always roaming as 302-370 is my home network and I can't use the roaming-based data rules to manage my data charges when I'm truly roaming.
Is there a way to add 302-720 as a "home network" as far as the Kaiser is concerned? Is this defined in the registry or in the ROM?
I am currently using the stock HTC ROM.
Thanks.
Its defined on the Sim card, just call Rogers and tell them what happened, and Im sure that they'll send you a new card with 302-720 as a home network.
Otherwise, I dont wanna be a Canadian Idiot! (LOL at Wierd Al for his song...)
Eh?
I've been in touch with both the regular customer service people and their "network people". They are either unable or unwilling to make that change for me. It is possible that they use the SIM's home network as a key to decide which back-end database they reference. Although they merged the two GSM networks, they still operate as two separate companies (apart from the price collusion, of course).
Yesterday, I even bought a new latest-generation SIM card to replace my ancient one thinking that it may fix the problem. No luck - it still uses the Fido network id.
So, as the SIM card is stuck the way it is, I need a way to override my Kaiser's opinion that the Rogers network is a roaming one.
I have a really similar problem, plus another one which might be related.
I am in the UK and on the "Three" network, they are mainly a 3G network and i'm not sure but they might not have 'any' 2G transmitters. So when I have 3G coverage there is no roaming icon and everything works fine.
If however I am in a 2G area and using their roaming partner (not sure who yet, possibly Orange) the GPRS will not work unless I go in and tell the phone to search for a network automatically then make a connection straight away. It says there is GPRS signal and connects but I can't actually transfer any data. The GSM standard phone calls and TXT messages work fine without doing that.
If anyone does have an answer on how to add additional home networks I would be gratefull to know too.
I have the same problem with Fido; however, when I put my SIM into a Samsung Jack flashed with Fido ROM, the roaming problem is gone. The Samsung Jack was from Rogers. This leads me to believe that the roaming is somehow set by the ROM.
I don't believe there is anyway you are going to be able to make the Rogers network not think you are a Rogers customer through a registry hack.
Maybe you can find a work around by using those dialing rules?
And the only real fix is to bite the bullet and switch over to a Rogers contract.
Switching over to Rogers will resolve the roaming issue and will finally be rid of the text from 18 for voicemail; however, I don't want to lose my old City Fido plan.
i also face same problem any solution guy's ?

Roaming

I bought and unlocked an ATT Pure on the weekend how can I make it not say roaming so I dont have all the dumb warnings when i'm using my phone in the right network, if i change the setting somewhere will it say i'm roaming when i do go on a different network.
Did you ever figure this out? I have the same problem with an AT&T Pure on Bell Canada.

Roaming

Hi,
Have a big problem in that whenever I put a rom on my new Tilt 2 (which I am running on the new HSPA Bell network). My phone thinks it is roaming.
This is a real pain and I can't seem to find away around the problem.
Please can somebody think of something I might be missing?
Thanks!!

Are you sure its roaming and not mistaken the icon for something else? Also, if you are indeed roaming, which network is it? AFAIK, in ON, there's only 2 HSPA network Rogers/Fido or Bell/Telus. Who is your provider?

I am on the new Bell HSPA network.
Any ideas?

Bell have their own network here so I dont think that could be the problem. I also have a Omnia 2 and an Iphone 3Gs that dont have this problem.
Also just tried to manually join the Rogers network and as I thought it would not let me connect.
It is only on the tilt2 after I flashed a new ROM onto it.
Thanks for the idea though.
Anybody else?

EDIT: read this first and then try the following suggestion
Try setting in the TP2 band selection to only HSPA and see what happens. Since bell has no GSM, and if your phone is set to 2G mode only, it's falling back on Rogers/Fido, hence, the roaming.
Start>>Settings>>Personal>>Phone>> Goto "Band" tab>>Set the GSM/UMTS band to "GSM (1900+850) + UMTS(1900+850).
Play around with the Network type by switching to GSM only or CDMA or leave it on Auto.
FYI Rogers/Fido and Bell/Telus HSPA network runs on 850/1900 band.
Food for thought....
Also another thing to consider, considering that Bell/Telus HSPA network is new, I thought i read somewhere you have to get your device "added" to their new HSPA system. Right now, only new sign-up's gets on the new HSPA network. In other words, your phone is trying to get on Bell HSPA network, but Bell rejects it since it's not in their system, so your phone hop's onto next on the list, either roaming on Rogers HSPA or Rogers GSM.
P.S: You might find better response over here

Thanks for the detailed response.
I dont think I am on the Rogers network as I get the Bell operator logo appear and the phone stays on 3G (as I cant drop to Edge because Bell dont have it on their network).
Also checking my online billing from the past few days I would expect to see some nasty roaming charges which I dont have.
Finally I also have a Jailbroken Iphone and that works on the network fine without any problems.
Its just very weird!!
Just tried to connect to the Rogers network manually and it will not let me connect. So it must be something wierd on the device.
Oh, it does show Bell operator logo. I thought the phone was registering on another entwork other than Bell.
Hmm, since you are not incuring roaming charges, only thing I can think of, is the network list that comes within the ROM classifies Bell as CDMA and not updated to reflect it supports HSPA. So it reads the network id as Bell and network type as HSPA and thinks its roaming? I dunno, i could be wrong lol! ::shrugs::

Make sense to me
I guess I can live with it if I need to. Does anybody know of a way to force the device not to flag any messages about roaming?
At least that will make it less annoying.

[Q] Failing to recognize that the device is roaming?

I got a device swap today on my Nexus One, so I rooted the replacement phone and restored a nandroid backup of my previous setup with CM6.1 RC1. No problem so far.
Within a few hours of doing this, I noticed my phone still had the FRF91 (4.06) radio. On my previous N1 I'd flashed the 5.12 radio and it was working well, so I flashed it using the appropriate update.zip.
I should point out that I always keep my phone in 3G mode because my provider, WIND Mobile, does not have a 2G network, and any time it's on 2G it is roaming on a partner network at a higher cost to me. I also have data roaming disabled.
After the phone restarted, I noticed within a few minutes that it was connected to the roaming network (WIND Away) and using EDGE data - even though it was set to 3G-only mode *and* no data roaming! I quickly disabled data and flashed back to the 4.06 radio. I didn't see the problem again.
But now upon further testing, I'm still seeing something disturbing. If I flip it to EDGE mode it connects to WIND Away, but the signal indicator doesn't have the roaming "R". Somehow the phone does not recognize that it's roaming anymore. This is incredibly dangerous because it could rack me up huge data charges. Prior to the device swap, any time it was on Wind AWAY I would get the "R". And when I put in my T-Mobile SIM while in Canada, I do get the "R" as well.
Any thoughts on what to do?
I'm having the same problem. I don't think it's related to the radio, but rather 6.1 rc (or in my case nightly ver 245). I'm using radio 5.12.00.8, and when I restore a nandroid backup of cm 6.0, using the same radio the roaming indicator works as it should. Looks like it might not confined to NexusOne http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/9065-is-cm61-rc1-better-than-cm6-stable-for-you/page__view__findpost__p__83991 Hopefully it's not some Wind quirk with cm 6.1

Yikes, glad to hear I'm not the only one. Let me summarize:
- WIND SIM roaming on T-Mobile: Roaming symbol.
- T-Mobile SIM roaming on Rogers 2G: Roaming symbol.
- T-Mobile SIM roaming on WIND 3G: Roaming symbol.
- WIND SIM roaming on Rogers 2G: No roaming symbol, tries to access EDGE data (OUCH! expensive).
This should probably get its own topic at the CyanogenMod forum.
The Testing screen (*#*#4636#*#*) also has an entry for "Roaming", and when I'm on WIND Away it says "Not roaming" - boo.
I created a thread about this on the Cyanogen forum :
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/10193-cm61-rc1-and-roaming-indicator/
But so far it's mainly me :/

Just an update, the problem has been resolved for future builds of CM. Read the link to the CM forums for more detail.

AT&T GT: How to turn off 3G?

Trying to turn off 3G data so I can just get EDGE on my AT&T tab. Can't find any setting for it...
(the scenerio is that with Tmo DayPass, after 30MB they throttle down to 70kbps, but apparently if you turn off 3G, then you get EDGE instead (200kbps)).
I'm guess the option has been removed from the AT&T tab... as apparently its in other GSM ROMs...
Settings, wireless settings, mobile networks, network mode, gsm only.
But if you are using a T-Mobile day pass and t-mobile sim card, with an at&t tab, the best speed you can get is EDGE anyway.
This doesn't make sense -

1) my AT&T tab doesn't have the settings that you cite, which others have also said is the way to turn off 3G. Specifically, Settings>WirelessAndNetwork>MobileNetworks does NOT have NetworkMode, only UsePacketData, DataRoaming, AccessPointNames and NetworkOperators. Hence my speculation that maybe AT&T took away this option to shut off 3G... is there another way to do it?
2) Tmo DayPass, after 30MB, I get throttled down to GPRS, not EDGE, and get about 30-70kbps. I would *like* to get at least EDGE, which would be about 200kbps.
I put my t-mobile sim in an at&t tab, and I have the network mode, so I don't know why your network menu is missing the mode.
Crazy suggestion - buy an at&t data plan. It's cheaper than the t-mobile day pass. $25 for 2gb. It's what I use. The sim came with the tab.
Honestly, I don't see what turning off 3g can do to improve speed.

People report that when you turn off 3G, devices revert to EDGE. The idea is that when you exceed the Tmo softcap, Tmo throttles the 3G speed down to about 70kbps, BUT its still running 3G even though its speeds is that of GPRS. By disabling 3G, you go back to EDGE, which is 3X the GPRS speeds in throttle mode.
The AT&T plan is cheaper IFF you need data for most of a month. But at least for now, I only am playing a day at a time. Mostly I'm on WiFi, which is most every where I need it to be.
That's interesting that you see Network mode on your AT&T tab and I don't...hmmm... are we running different ROMs? My About says:
SGH-I987
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I987UCJK1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build FROYO.UCJK1
Yes, I am gingerbread. But I had the same menu with froyo.
I like the JK3 modem in my at&t tab, and in my experiment with the t-mobile sim, I got pretty good speed, for EDGE, anyways. At the top of the development section there is a modem stickie, for the JK3 modem. Use odin3.
You are smart to get the at&t version of the tab. You will love it with the voice and 3g/h, if you get the at&t sim. They sell one small data plan for $15 for a gig.
