[Q] HTC One Mobile Hotspot DNS settings - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For some reason, the HTC One mobile hotspot is not providing DNS information to any connected device.
I get internet ONLY if I use ROM Toolbox Lite to manually set the DNS on the other Android device I'm connected too. Connecting a Windows PC to the mobile hotspot has the same issue, where a DNS server cannot be found. Manually changing the DNS server allows me to connect.
It's super annoying, and I don't really have a fix other than software on the connected device to modify the DNS to Google's 8.8.8.8.
Is this an APN issue, ROM issue or device issue?
Network: Rogers LTE
ROM: Viper 2.6.0
Radio: Stock
Kernel: Elemental 3.11

I think its fair that I bump this. I haven't found a solution yet.

AT&T phone tether in Africa

I have frf91 on a AT&T version of nexus one. I am trying to tether wirelessly but I can't because of a DNS issue. My computer (I've tried with a PC and a Mac) sees the network and can ping a IP but nothing requiring DNS. So I am pretty sure the problem is not a computer but the phone itself or the cell company. I'm not rooted and am using vodacom Tanzania for service. Internet works fine on the phone. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Have you tried changing the DNS settings in the connection properties on the PC to use alternate DNS servers? (e.g: OpenDNS's servers)
Preferred DNS server address for Open DNS is:
208.67.222.222
Alternate DNS server address for Open DNS is:
208.67.220.220
Yes I've tried that and some other DNS numbers with same results. Thanks.

Randomly after weeks, I tried tether again and it works. Now every time I connect the ssid shows one number higher like "android ap (16)" on my win7 machine.

Connecting to ADSL Modem using WiFi

Hi,
I have ADSL modem, and I am trying to connect to the modem (via WiFi) and use internet on my HTC VIVA.
My internet connection requires authentication in order to connect. I can successfully connect to modem using Wifi connection. In order to connection to Internet, I added new VPN server from settings > Connections > Edit my VPN servers. I added all the credentials as provided by my ISP, however I am not able to connect to internet and access web pages from the Internet explorer of my device.
Please help me and let me know where I am going wrong?
Thanks,
You don't have to set your authentication data in your Viva.
All you need to do is connect to your ADSL modem using WiFi and start browsing the web. It should work correctly unless your ISP requires a proxy server.
Tell us what happens.
Hi GFX,
Thanks for replying. I connected to ADSL using WiFi, but when I open Internet explorer I get page not found.
When I was in US, I was able to access Internet as per your reply. But now I am in India and I am not able to access Internet.
Some of the differences that might help you or any other who would like to contribute
USA India
====== =======
ISP Comcast BSNL
Authentication WPA2-PSK Open
Data Encryption AES WEP
Thanks,
I'm not sure what's causing this.
Probably your ISP requires a proxy server. Can you connect to the internet using your PC??
The other thing is, your ISP has nothing to do with your ADSL modem authentication and data encryption modes! You can set these settings manually according to your personal needs. Read your ADSL modem user manual for more information.
A WPA2 authentication is recommended so you can protect your modem & internet connection from outsiders and hackers.
Check your ISP's website to see if they require a proxy server. And tell us about your ADSL modem brand and model so we can help you.
My ISP does not require proxy server, and I can connect to Internet using my PC. I am able to connect to my ADSL modem but somehow I am not able to connect to Internet.
Following are the details of my ADSL modem
Brand: Huawei
Model: WA1003A
Its an ADSL router.
Thanks,
OK, please check the following settings in your device:
1- Goto Start-> Settings -> Connections -> Connections-> Advanced tab-> tap on "Select Networks", and check that the first dropdown menu says "My ISP".
2- Goto Start-> Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi -> Network Adapters tab, and check that the first dropdown menu says "The Internet".
If you made any changes to the above settings, try to reconnect to the modem once again, it may work this time.
However, if you left the above settings unchanged then your problem lies somewhere else. Check if you can access the internet using Opera Mini, or try connecting to another router. Because we need to determine the source of the problem.
Good luck.
have you simply tried connecting via wifi with default settings?
when you switch on wifi, once the network is detected, you can feed in the values then right? sorry if this seems like a stupid answer but we often miss whats right under our noses,
Sorry for replying so late, was busy with lots of work for some time.
GFX: My connection settings are same as you mentioned. But even with these settings in place, no success.
karthiksk: I get connected to WiFi network, but after this I don't get any popup box in my device to enter the details.
Guys, however I got the solution, since my network uses PPoE, I had to configure these settings in my Modem. Earlier I was entering ISP credentials in an external PPPoE client on my PC, this way I can access Internet with only one PC at a time and WiFi was also not working.
I entered ISP credentials in my modem and configured PPoE settings. Now I can connect my PC (using Ethernet cable), my laptop using WiFi and my HTC device using WiFi at the same time.
Thank you all for helping me in trying to resolve this issue.
Good to see your problem solved.
Turns out it has nothing to do with your device!
Enjoy your Viva, it's a wonderful device.

Dear Vijay,
I am facing the same problem to connect my E61 handset to BSNL Huwaei modem. Can you give me the steps to configure the same.
I can connect to the modem, just let me know what configuration changes are to be made to enable access from mobile phone.

This is a Windows Mobile and HTC VIVA forum, it is highly unlikely that you will get your solution here. and it is unsafe to post you mobile number.
I'm facing the same problem..it's not the ISP or modem..it's only & only viva...
It sucks badly...I purchased two different modem router..one of netgaer and other one of linksys...and the didn't work on both of them...wifi only works with the modem ZTE ZXDSL 531B
**** off viva...

[Q] Unable to connect Nexus one to WPA2 Enterprise Wifi

Device: Nexus One
Status: Rooted
ROM: Cyanogenmod 7RC1
Hi,
Is there a way to connect to WPA2 Enterprise Wifi?
What about the method the manually edit wpa_supplicant.conf?
Try this app from the marketplace
WiFi Advanced Config Editor
It worked beautifully for me - I couldn't connect to my work's WPA enterprise with LEAP protocol until I used this software.
Now I get great WIFI connection at work!
Good luck.

Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.1.2116262123.83950 not working?

I have a custom ROM based on the official 2.3.5 ROM (3.12.405.1) and the HTC WiFi Hotspot application doesn't work. The app starts and wireless devices can associate with it and lease IP addresses via DHCP but they can't access the Internet. I think its a NAT problem in the application because I can resolve names from my PC as the phone is proxying the DNS lookups - i.e. open a command prompt on my PC and type 'nslookup www.google.com' and I get valid answers. If I try to access the Internet with the browser it fails.
I have downloaded android-wifi-tether and this works as long as the 'Routing Fix' is checked in the settings. I was hoping not to have to have this alternate WiFi Tether application and use the integrated one.
Just tested USB Tethering and the results are the same - i.e. PC gets an IP address and can resolve names but can't access the Internet. I assume this is something fundamental in the NAT/Routing being done by the phone?

Really weird... Sounds like your mobile data connection is down. (I'm sure you already checked that)
Flash some other ROM with same base and try.

I can access the Internet on the phone when its running so I know there is connectivity. As I say I think its something fundamental with the NAT/routing on the phone - I am not sure how to debug it further?
Andy
I am not sure why but this fixed it for me:
http://androidforums.com/1734672-post32.html
I assume with Orange the WiFi Hotspot App uses this 'Consumer Broadband' connection and not the default 'Orange Internet' connection. I was tempted to delete the 'Consumer Broadband' APN and see what happens, a job for another day though as I need to use it at the moment.

DNS issue with mobile hotspot

I was setting up the TBH radio hack for enabling mobile hotspot, and having an issue I'm hoping someone can help with.
The hotspot works without issue using a Win 7 laptop to test internet connectivity (by using Firefox to check google and yahoo).
My newer Win 8 laptop I'm not so lucky. I can connect to the hotspot fine, but DNS resolution doesn't appear to work. The network connection in my system tray shows it connected with internet connectivity. I can browse to google from Firefox if I do it by IP address (which I fetched when I had laptop connected to home wireless), but I can't by name. I can't get to anything via DNS name. I tried removing Symantec Antivirus to see if that was contributing, and had the same result. I can't ping external hostnames either. The laptop has no issues when on home network.
Anyone have any ideas on why mobile hotspot DNS resolution wouldn't work with Win 8?
Thanks in advance for any help....
Have you tried forcing the DNS servers in the Win8 connection instead of letting them as auto? Try 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (they are public DNS servers from Google https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/ )
