901e red:
-sound crackling with bass at high volumes using in ear headphones
-hiss with IEMs and cpu noise on left channel
-volume messes up (beats volume gain reversed or no gain on either mode) after plugging in headphones while speaker is playing music
Latest update also adds charging percentage animation when charging phone and you cant turn it off unless you turn the phone on standby and charge it as such

I got mine in a box with the imei on the box so it did not come with stickers. It was purchased from PDA king which I think is an official seller as their main store is also official HTC service center in Taiwan. HTC Taiwan seems to partner with such store (also Fat Lizard lol weird name) s their employees are HTC.
Then again tsokh says he has similar problems on the 901s

hmm, mine was purchased in late August, but perhaps it was one of the earlier models as the store is relatively small but then again it's part of a rather large computer market (NOVA). I wonder if any other Taiwanese users here can confirm my problems.
I think a lot of headphone amps will have distortion if volume is too high, I have an iPad 2 and I think it has an amp as its volume level is very similar to the Butterfly s, probably a tad higher. It has a similar distortion with IEMs but only at the absolute highest volume setting (which is way too high for my ears anyways). With over-ear headphones it sounds fine at max volume. With my Butterfly s, however, I notice it at 12/15 of the maximum volume already (which I consider my ideal listening volume to block out noise and hear more of the music). I do not notice any distortion with anything else but slow bass notes. The high pitched CPU noise only happens between tracks although there is still some hiss going on (only very noticeable in very quiet parts with IEMs - update seems to have fixed the continuous hiss after music is stopped).
Really should have asked for a replacement in Taiwan but I only had one week before I returned to Canada, and also took a few days going to Macau . I don't want to have it RMA'd here in Canada because it is primarily an Asian product plus so many people complaining about HTC's RMA service. (more or less so in Taiwan, probably slightly better)>
Droider.se a Swedish HTC fan site said they had similar problem as mine with a partially "broken" UrBeats headphones while a new UrBeats sounds fine. Well I think Beats headphones have higher impedance so they might not distort as much (but then I'm not a fan of the Beats sound)
Received mine through negri electronics, and am not happy!!!!! The phone itself is amazing, but i do have one dead pixel!! And it squeaks when bending a little. I can live with these minor problems. What i cant live with, is the fact that i paid 750.00 for a NEW phone, and got one already opened!!!! I assumed that it was standard operation procedure, to make sure the device worked, and wasnt cracked, or shattered etc. etc.
Boy, was i wrong!! Seems like Negri, has a "open box special" on their website. Lol! I must have got in on this deal unknowingly!!!! At twice the cost! Im gonna post a couple screenshots, and i suggest anyone else who has had this happen, stand up, and say something! Ive been sending email after email trying to reach a manager. I will contact better business if i have to. This is unacceptable, and im not gonna settle for a bargain phone, at a full retail price!!!
If u notice, in the screenshot, there is no mention of a "open box special" because, thats not what i paid for!

Damn that really sucks. so much for 440 ppi though because I thought you wouldn't be able to see a dead pixel lol.
I think squeaking when bending is somewhat unavoidable my One X+ also made creaking sounds when bending. They're both "plastic" phones though the HOX+ has a really nice unibody it feels rugged. I bought the BS mainly because I would want an unlocked phone to use when travelling, unfortunately, the next time I go to Taiwan I think I'll need to take up 2 weeks for RMA and who knows, it might not even be the headphone amp but the DAC itself or something else...
Do you have problems with audio quality such as bass crackling?

Mine came in open box too, but I bought it from local seller, as the phone would cost me more than 1000$ with customs taxes. anyway, I checked if everything works during a week including testing for dead pixels. I don't hear any squeaking when bending. Regarding the sound, I have the same issue as FYL21, but I really don't bother about it, as I don't listen to music on such volume level when the hiss or crackling are noticeable with my stock headphones. However, I still prefer listening to music with high-impendance earphones (borrowed AT ESW9 from my friend for some time - really like the soundstage).

Are you also getting headphone crackling at high volumes with bass?
Test song: https://app.box.com/s/71ernfnfrucms6iggetk
I think a little bit of crackling with speakers is somewhat normal; a lot of people with HTC One reported the same issue as well, to which turning Beats audio ON might actually stop it because it lowers the volume of the speaker while for headphones it increases volume slightly.
I think this 1.9gHz Qualcomm chip is quite problematic considering the Galaxy S4 had very similar audio problems using headphones... It seems to only affect some units though. The problem is nobody else has reported such problems to HTC so they think mine should be RMA'd and I don't think everyone has this problem. If the problem lies within the DAC, I am not sure if they can replace the SoC...
As for the creaking you have noticed, it seems like there is a space of air near where the volume rocker is. It isn't much of a problem
Stupid question here but what is the different between the E and S models? Does one have different specs or something along those lines?

the only difference is that 901s supports LTE frequencies, 901e doesn't have LTE. All other specs are similar.

I am awaiting my 3rd replacement handset from 3 UK
My first handset had an issue when using the camera to record video - despite the room being quiet the video had loud hissing on it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ1xApO0wN8
My second hadset has a problem with the screen where it is not sealed correctly at the top and also a proximity sensor issue
(which I discovered this morning)
3 uk are as said sending me a third replacement handset out and have said after the 3rd handset if there is a fault it has to go to HTC for repair which isn't right and I will be fighting that (however im hoping that the 3rd is perfect)
Both handsets I have had so far have been from the batch HT338W.
I have just spoken to HTC who say they are not aware of a batch issue and explained their repair service which has a 5 day turn around
I wanted to know if you have a HTC One in Silver from the batch HT338W and want to know have you any issues with it ?
I have set up a poll ....
simply
No issues
Minor issues
Major issues - Kept Phone
Major Issues - Returned for replacement
Can you also reply back to explain what your issues are if there are any and also where you got the phone from (eg phones4u, 3 uk, Amazon etc)
I am hoping to escalate to HTC regarding this batch and would like some evidence
Thanks
I'm not sure if this is just your batch... I just tested my camera and also hear continuous loud hissing. My batch number is FA33K ...
I have a hissing noise present when I play all audio, video included, no matter how I am playing the audio (bluetooth speakers, headphones, the phones speakers, etc). Play a quietish song through decent headphones (the ones in the box?) at the lowest volume, thats when the noise is most noticeable.
Edit- Also have you tried playing the video recorded by the phone on another device?
In my opinion give it back and buy it next month.
HTC are aware of the hissing and its a software issue.

I rang them and they categorically stated that they are not. Other people on this forum have said that they have no issues with hissing, suggesting that it is a hardware issue.
This is my 4th HTC One. Also bought from 3uk. Camera issues. While having shiny white things in focus, black stripes were running over the object. For example i focused a white car. Phone made it black striped bright blue. This one however has no issues. Runs smoothly. They have to change it for you. Accept no repair bull****. Good luck!

Just out of curious we're they all the same batch ?
Believe me I won't be accepting a repair as I'm within 28 days I've documented all faults by picture or video
What's the serial of your perfect one ?
First 6 numbers and letters only needed
Wonder if you got a new batch ?

did 3 replace it without fuss ? they said that if the next handset is faulty it needs to go to HTC

Proximity Sensor issues

Also Back and Home not lite .. down to proximity sensor faulty I presume

Do you have beats audio on? This causes a really loud hiss when playing back video recordings. However, when this is deselected, it causes significant reduction in hiss. I found that in this latter condition, there's comparable hiss to that found on my other phones.
Currently using: BB Z10, HTC ONE and GALAXY NOTE 2

that is not a proximity sensor issue. if the phone is on speaker then the proximity sensor won't turn on. it only turns on when you're using the handset mode to turn off the screen.

oops im bad - uploaded the wrong one thanks for noticing.
I did a video with speakers on and also off .. should have loaded the one with the speakers off
and also showed the app which tests proximity and as you will see its not budging when I cover the sensor at the top
Did work out from my note 2 that the proximity sensor only kicks in when the phone is on normal mode and not speaker mode
corrected and proper video now uploaded

No issues that I am aware of, video has good quality pictures and audio.
There does appear to be a very small gap (miniscule) at the top, between aluminium (speaker) grill and plastic that is insignificant to me.
In summary I am very happy with the build quality of my HTC One
I wish you luck.

Hi there - I'm enjoying my new HTC One since a couple of days. Everything seem to be working fine and I am truly amazed being new to HTC but I'm having issues with the sound quality when I use headphones.
The moment any type of sound is played (headphones plugged in) by the phone I get some hissing sound from distortion, interference..... who knows. It stops after more or less two seconds after the last sound but is continuous when I play music. The headphones I'm using are noise-cancelling but I also tried several regular ones and the problem is still there. All headphones work fine with any other device.
Has anybody experienced similar issues? I would be grateful for any sort of help on this issue.
Cheers!
Sounds like the headphones are not plugged in all the way... Do you have a case with a cutout for the headphones? That could explain it. Try without the case.
Otherwise could be a faulty socket in the phone in which case exchange it.
Lastly, I know that bluetooth and wifi conflict when listening to music wirelessly.. Although you are plugged in to the phone, experiment with wifi and bluetooth turned off anyway if they are on by default.

Cans with incompatible mic's cause issues too. A tip ring, ring, sleeve connector that is not genuine HTC will throw a weird reverb sound up.

Thanks for the tip. The hissing noise is slightly lower than with Beats audio on but the problem still persists..
I've had 4 HTC Ones and they've all had this issue, exchanging it for an s4. Theres a few threads in the troubleshooting section about this, a few people claim that HTC told them over the phone that its a software issue but when I phoned them they didn't have a clue.
On my Sensation I had the same problem with in ear phones. The solution was to edit some config files in the/etc folder which would lower the gain settings, which would make the hiss virtually non existent.
You have to be rooted to do so.
The name of the file is
TPA2051_CFG.csv and another just like it.
You want to edit the mode_playback_headset line.
I don't have a One yet, and for that matter dont know if these files exist on the One.My feeling is they do, or some others just like it, but might be named a bit different since i think the TPA2051 in the file name stands for the chip, and in the above case would be for the Sensation.
But just wanted to pass this on as I certainly understand not wanting the hiss with low impedence in ear phones.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk 2
I have been noticing this issue also. It's sort of like a continuous faint popping / ticking that sometimes fades out, and comes back. However also I have noticed that the issue isn't an issue once you turn the screen off or are on the lock screen. So playing music, then locking it lets you have clean audio through the headphones. Isn't until I turn the screen on and unlock the device that the weird popping sound comes back. So using the headphones for anything with the screen on is a bit annoying... and turning beats audio off just reduces the volume of the popping sound but doesn't get rid of it.
Fortunately I don't really do much with headphones on the phone except for listening to music with the screen off, however if I could discover a fix for it to act good all the time that would just be fantastic. Particularly while web browsing.
I have had the same issue since i got the phone but i was reading that its something to do with any app that uses the proximity sensor? is there any truth in this i'd love to get rid of it...if i did the HTC is the perfect phone IMO

I have the same problem but during voice calls. DUring music its fine. I have noticed that if I am using 3G , UMTS or LTE , this problem is much more compared to GSM . On GSM I feel nothing during voice call.
Interesting that I found this thread. I've been noticing a clicking or ticking sound while using my cheap FM transmitter in the car through the headphone jack. All other headphones work fine. I tried a LG device with the same transmitter and there is a 'whirring' feedback instead. The clicking is certainly unique to the HTC one, but it DOES depend on the device the headphone jack is connected too.
I agree the HTC does not sound good using in ear headphones. I tried all different types of in ear headphones nothing works. The Nexus 4 and Galaxy S4 are the same way. Listen to music is very unpleasant

I've heard this hissing issue with every android phone (s3, s4, one, evo 3d, nexus 7) i've tried to day.
As a sidenote I've also heard this on the BB Z10, but not on my girlfriends super old ipod touch.
I think apple may be the route to take for audio quality .
I have this issue too but faux sound nearly eliminates it. Just get a compatible kernel, set preset to quality and you are good to go
I also had this issue with my One X+ so it's obviously not the audio chip but rather something HTC is doing to increase the volume output.

Sadly, that is the only way to go. My iPhone 5 had great sound quality, sound was clean and no hissing crap at all. It's really a sad that you have to get fauxsound to lower the gain to get decent quality output.

A day after receiving my phone, I began to notice the bottom speaker was louder than the top. Now I'm wondering if this is common.
Holding the phone about 6-8 inches away from you, play a video or mp3 of talking (standup comedy/video blog/etc) with the volume 3-4 notches below max. Do one of the speakers sound slightly/noticeably louder?

Maybe that would fix it. With it my Sprint unit only being a week old, I'd rather not risk it to wait and see. Lets Talk is sending me another one as we speak (type?). Gonna test my new unit to see if it has the same problem.
I actually might have waited it out if it weren't for the fact that the top speaker died at one point, requiring a soft reset to fix. Hopefully I just got a bad unit because I love this phone.
I noticed this on one that we took out of the box to play with. Was watching a few youtube videos on it and I noticed that the bottom speaker was slightly louder than the top. Otherwise it wouldn't really be noticeable imho, seems like a software mixing problem on the device we tested. Yours could have been defective if it was significantly louder than the top speaker.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. It's a minor volume difference, but enough to be noticeable. I almost started to believe one of my ears were less capable than the other, lol. I'll try out the replacement and see if it's an improvement. Wish I didn't have to set everything up again, though.

I can barely notice a difference between the two speakers. If you didn't post this I probably would never even detected it but there is a very slight difference between the two speakers.
My apologies to any glass shattering moments created for anyone who reads this topic.
I've confirmed the volume imbalance by venturing to different retail stores and testing their models, along with the two I've posessed. Each time I've been able to have it presented to me in random orientations and, with my eyes closed, identify which side is the bottom speaker. It's kind of a neat party trick at this point, lol.
I've become used to it, assuming it to be a software fix away from perfection. Here's hoping HTC notices and balances the two.
Just got my black sprint model 2 days ago. Seems equal to me. Maybe I'm just not that anal.

For what it's worth. I haven't noticed any imbalances with my phone...
I noticed this on one that we took out of the box to play with. Was watching a few youtube videos on it and I dynam rc planes noticed that the bottom speaker was slightly louder than the top.I can barely notice a difference between the two speakers. If you didn't post this I probably would never even detected it but there is a very slight difference between the two speakers:good::good:.
My bottom speaker is very slightly louder. I thought it was a hardware fault but turn beats on and both speakers level out perfectly! Can't complain!
Mine seems to be well balanced
Hi Guys
Just got my New One and Im having the same issue.. the bottom speaker is ever so slightly louder than the top.. On its side, the SIM tray down over, front cam at the top, listening to TuneIn Radio Pro and any music In the player.. the Right speaker is louder. Im running 422 / 2.24.401.8.
Are these defective units and should I replace it or is there a fix out for it.
Thanks
my top is louder.. for sure.. but it still sounds great to me.. i didt get my phone new.. i traded my S4 for the ONE.. from someone off craigslist.. the dude i got it from his first htc one died.. so they sent him a replacement he had it for 5 days the we traded phone
Stereo is never equally output balanced..which is why its stereo.
My top speaker is louder. Over the updates the overal sound volume has been decreased. Does anyone know of a volume fix?

Have a m7ul, not a Sprint One, but I noticed my bottom speaker is MUCH louder than my top one. To the point where there's no noticeable difference in volume/sound if I cover the top speaker. Had anyone noticed if the ROM makes any difference? Stock sense vs Play Edition vs CM?
I'm on CM 10.2 nightly right now. I did have a lot of difficulty hearing people on phone calls on ARHD Sense though.

Anyone else have this issue? I've tried flashing multiple Roms and that hasn't helped. It doesn't sound blown just a quarter of the volume of the bottom speaker

Have you tried to flash a mod for audio?
Probably is an hardware issue...

I have this issue, and have tried everything with no fix. When snooping around I found a few people on android central, and one another person on here.
Edit for link to My post

Same issue here... Did you fix it?
I think this is because there is a difference in frequencies of the sound output from both the speakers. The upper one tends to give more treble while the lower one has better mids, that's why the lower one sounds louder. Hold the speakers to your ear one by one and see the difference.

yea. went to att and got a new phone

The difference is so huge that I don't have to keep it to my ear to notice it. This is the actual problem that I have. The top one is tooooooo low compared to the bottom one and not just while listening to music/movies but even while having a phone call, the in-call volume is incredible low. It seams like total volume of the top speaker decreased ten times.
Right now I'm an exchange emails process with HTC technical support... I'm curious what is their final verdict going to be.

Somebody tried brushing it with a dry toothbrush and got it working like new. If that doesn't work, you can always send it back to htc.

Did he remove the speaker cover and then used the toothbrush or did he used it over the cover?

With the speaker cover on. Get it done with HTC. I had the same problem, and they changed my top audio daughterboard as well as the top speaker.

Thanks for the info but since my problem is not major(top speaker is almost 40% lower volume compared to the bottom speaker) I leave it as is.
Strangely enough during phone calls everything seems to be normal with the top speaker.....

I had it the same way, but it got worse with time, and eventually in call audio became extremely soft too, so I had to send it in

I realised it when I runned the HTC Tools sound check.....
I will see how it goes.
I hope I dont have to send it to service.
Cause I had bad experience with my last ONE X and service.....

Just try brushing it with a toothbrush (center part of the top grille). Actual service involves disassembly of the phone and then replacement of the speaker. HTC should be able to get it done without any further damage

Guys...all you have to do is clean the speakers with an air duster. I have this issue often with my phone too. Sometimes even my notification light gets really dim, all I do is clear out the dust from the speaker grills and the sound and lights are back to normal.
I totally agree for the air duster but it's not easy to get your hands on one....

A while ago I noticed, that the speakers are not giving out the same output when listening to music. The top speaker's output is more thin and has more treble, while the bottom speaker has more bass. This would not be an issue, if the top speaker would not cause issues (resonate, crackle) on certain ringtones/music when played loud.
After reading some users' experiences I found out, that for some the top speaker has more bass, for others the bottom one, but never the same output.
My questions are:
How are your speakers?
Is it possible to somehow balance the difference between the two?
So i presume, I'm the only one
They are fine on mine.

So both speakers give out the same audio quality? Good for you. I mean if I cover them each, and the audio is different (as described).
@davebugyi, I don't notice any difference either - I don't know how you could fix it but maybe @pricey2009's multi mod is a workaround?

Maybe it depends on the kind of song you are playing? It actually is fine on mine.

I have the same issue, did you find any fix for this? as the ringtone and loud speaker call only plays in the bottom speaker and its too low to hear very annoying.
whats your model number? mine is Z3C D5833
thanks

Unfortunately I did not find any solution, as it was pointed out by many people - it may be due to the hardware differences between units.
I already sold the device to my friend and moved on to the OPO.
I'm having issues too. When I do a factory reset the bottom speaker works fine but after a few days it will stop working. I specifically did a restore and didn't change any settings to see if it would stick but it stopped working again. Since it's the bottom speaker I can't user speaker phone during calls.
Mine is Bass at the bottom, treble at the top. Although the volume sounds equal. I think it's a feature not a Bug. A balance.

It's not a feature. Only a idiot would create a feature like that. Come to think of it, Sony mobile dept is just a lame bunch of retards. I got mine from the first batch and the touch panel on mine is a pos (touch grids are visible) and deltaE of the display deviates so far off. It's the worst IPS display I've seen in my whole life. Somehow the display on my friend's Z3C is much better (no visible touch grids pattern) but hers has battery drain and flap problems. I got mine on Sept last year and she got hers last month. I guess mine and hers are from different batches.
I can't believe a reputable company like Sony would pull a dirty scheme like this just to save a few bucks. F Sony. They don't give a crap about their customers. I'm ditching these idiots.
@davebugyi have you tried this?

Battery drain could be caused by apps and software bugs, don't jump to conclusions on "battery drain", mine last 6 hours on 3G continuous usage, normal usage, 15 hours +. Flaps? My phone passes the pressure test, but water keeps on getting in from the USB/SD flap, every time I put it in the water. I scrutinised each and every centimetre of the phone. Only possible point of entry for the water is through the flap, I'm guessing it's defective. Too busy to get a replacement part, but I'll soon, install a new flap, SHOULD fix the issue. There are tons of other software/hardware bugs on all Sony Z devices reported by thousands of users. This is the last Sony phone I buy. The next time, it'll be HTC or LG.
By the way the next best brand would be Meizu, they are partners with Sony and they make phones better than Sony.

I got the same problem on my Z3C running M .291.
the top speaker too loud.
anyone can help me modify mixer_paths.xml or mixer_paths_auxpcm.xml or TFA98xx or somethings else to make balance on both speakers? thank
