Okay, before I proceed further in troubleshooting I have a basic question. I am at the point that I need to use a fastboot cable to unbrick my Kindle Fire HD.
So is this a special cable I need to purchase or is the cable that came with my Kindle Fire HD considered a fastboot cable? I have lots of usb cables for different devices Galaxy S4, Nexus 7, Blackberry etc. Are any of these fastboot cables or do I literally have to buy one labeled as such or make one myself?
You have to buy one or make one yourself, the cable when plugged into the kindle makes it immediately turn on and say fastboot in big letters.

I had the exact same problem and exact same question not to long ago.
To answer, a fastboot, also called a "factory" cable is NOT the cable that came with your device from the factory. It is a cable used BY the factory to put a kindle into fastboot mode. It must be purchased or made. I suggest buying one. The difference between a standard cable and a fastboot, and how you make one, is a jumper between pins 1 & 4 on the small USB side. Amazon sells 1 for $15. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0099E59SG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1380187651&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165 as well as someone on xda. If you have faith in your ability to micro solder make one, just know that a poorly made fastboot cable can permanently brick a device by sending power to pins which should not have power. Check this out for more info.

And good luck. Getting into fastboot is 80% of the problem with most bricks.

They both consist of jumping pins to confuse your device into booting into fastboot mode when powering on.
I've only seen factory cables for the KFHD. The plus to the factory cables is they serve a dual purpose - to get you into fastboot and to communicate with your device whereas a USB jig (if possible for a KFHD) would simply put the device into fastboot (no way to connect to computer).
I bought mine from ebay (very cheap), while I can solder, when looking at the pricing out there it's not worth my time.
I try a jig it on kindle hd nothing happen only work on my t989

So could you use a USB jig to boot into fastboot mode, and hook up to your computer with a normal cable?

Get some of the Geneic USB cable from Ebay.. 6 out 2 Atrix HD don't accept Generic USB cables. They can not charge. When connected to PC, it keep detect phone on and off. Can not get stable connection. But another 2 back Atrix HD detected fine. Most of White Atrix HD don't work well. I also tried to connect to any phone, like older model Motorola Triumph, Motorola flip phone and My LG phone work find. Atrix HD seems picky on USB cable. Anyone having same problem?? Feel free to post or comment.

I would bet your problem is with the cheap cables and not your devices. I have 3 devices and randomly interchange all of them with a variety of name brand and generic cables and haven't had any trouble.
The atrix really only like a factory cables and chargers. Especially if it dies.

Read the above post....
I've used 5 different cables with my AHD ever -- OEM Moto Bravo, OEM Moto Defy, OEM Moto AHD, Samsung ???, and HP ???. Samsung only worked on wall charger/car charger, HP only on PC. My Bravo cable charges and transmits data faster so I use it normally with my AHD and use the AHD cable with my Defy. My OEM Bravo cable is the best USB cable I've ever had. If you ever get the chance to get an old school Moto OEM cable, get it, you won't regret it.
I'd like to add that our OEM AHD cables have a tendency to short. My Dad's shorted out a few weeks ago. What would happen is it would bootloop then instant it was plugged into the wall charger. I gave him my Defy cable (didn't want to....) and now its working just fine.
This is all anecdotal evidence, but I've seen the ame anecdotal evidence in every Motorola Forum. Some of us get lucky with generics, most of us don't.
I agree, OEM cables are much better. I can use cheap cables with the OEM charger plug, but it makes the touch screen not work correctly...it will select things I didn't touch and makes almost impossible to use. Just go with OEM.
I have never had a problem with any of the USB cables I used with my AHD. These include a cable from my HTC, Samsung S2, LG P930, and a Samsung Galaxy S.
OEM cable from samsung, HTC and even with no name cable from old flip phone work. It can not work with Generic white cable got from Ebay come with Iphone Adapter one. It's just a hardware cable, how can a software tell the different wires inside the Generic cable???
Why this generic cable work fine on my Motorola Triumph and LG phone?? It seems like Atrix HD has some software to detect None OEM cable like Iphone do.

As mentioned, leave charging as long as possible. Hours since it can depend on your Kindle OS version (eg 7.X.X), and not all Kindles are the same believe it or not. Then plug it in your computer with the fastboot cable, if "Fastboot" appears on your screen, your in fastboot mode, move on to recovering it. Don't mean to get you panicked on this last part, but not all "fastboot/factory cables" put you into fastboot mode, unless it was declared in the description it works on KF. Good luck though.

Let me/us know if it at some point at least boots with the Kindle Fire logo so the recovering step can be initiated.
I know the KFHD7 can't power things plugged into the micro USB but assuming a USB hub or power from another source just having the data cable plug into it should work, right? I've tried a USB2 HDD and USB wireless mouse/keyboard and they don't work though, although they do on my Samsung Galaxy S3 using same apps to mount in case of the USB2 HDD.
If this is possible what am I missing to make it work?

Damn, lack of USB OTG support is a real shame, I was hoping to use the KFHD7 as a portable media centre/laptop replacement but it might be impossible by the sound of it.
One thing i forgot to mention is that my KFHD7 is modified with TWRP and CM 10.1, runs really smooth compared to the stock software. But is USB OTG stillnot possible like it was on the original Kindle Fire? Seeing as this newer one uses a second bootloader and all.

When looking for a new kernel for my kindle fire HD 7" running cm 10.1 am I looking for one compatible with cm10.1 , with the fire or both?
Specifically I'm trying to get USB otg function operational. If there is a ROM that will support this feature I'd be willing to switch from Hashcode's cm10.1.

It's a pain to do OTG with KFHD because no voltage is available. You can make this happen with a certain Y USB cord but it's sloppy and inconvenient or you can use Wi-Drive which is OK.

Not my video but explains it well enough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M. I think it would be attainable by using a moded fastboot style USB cord but with a female end for mass storage. Get the voltage and the USB option will light up. Needless to say that this is at own risk.

Looks like someone has already done the female 'fastboot' bit. Rather than going through all the trouble with a charge pack, looks like he just used the already available voltage already present from the voltage pin. I have not tried this yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U19c7PfR7Ts

Having already bought an otg cable thinking it was just plug and play and a separate fastboot cable to fix a brick, is there, in existance, an adapter that turns a male USB (full sized) into a female USB port (also full sized)?
And is the power provided by the voltage pin enough to run a standard flash drive?

I have seen a video where the USB was powered off of 3 Volts from just 2 AA batteries. I'm thinking 4-5 Volts would be more desirable. The last video I posted only shows him using what I thought could be used. I have not done that one yet.
It looks like he modded a Female 2.0 USB cord by jumping the Voltage pin like one would making a home brewed fastboot cord to attain the Voltage needed. It's all one piece. Using something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-Typ...tension-Adapter-Converter-Cable-/120998059596
The adapter you asked for can be found here http://compare.ebay.com/like/221249757202?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar It's just a male to female USB 2.0 adapter.
Here is a great topic on how to home brew your own fastboot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39569189 Here's a video as well. Motorola is the same as the Kindle Fire HD 7 fastboot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwwI_6doBWk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Do so at your own risk of course.

Thank you! So, I have a "factory" or "fastboot" cable already, now, if I buy the male to female adaptor will otg work? Is that all I've been missing, is a "powered" USB port? Or do I need some additional software as well? Like a new os or kernel?

Yes, you need the female to female USB. Good catch. The first video I posted about here http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M&desktop_uri=/watch?v= BFEMh0ZYT5M shows the method with the Y style USB cord working with a KFHD running CM 9. I'm thinking the second video just utilizes the voltage available from the board vrs a charging pack.

I'm not so sure he is just using an adaptor. The voltage still must be applied. I'm thinking he has a couple small watch batteries in there to apply voltage. The fastboot cable plugged in does not put out voltage. I would recommend using the Y connection setup until someone figures out how the other guy wired the one piece.

All you're trying to do is energize the flash drive. I'm thinking that the one video, he took a USB plug down to bare bones and fixed it so there was voltage going to pin 1 which is the voltage pin. Putting the voltage only to the USB and not the KFHD.

This is all very helpful, but what I do not want is to have to use three different cables especially if they are bodged together with tape and exposed wires that could be pulled lose in my pocket. What if I jumped pins one and four on my existing otg cable. Does the kindle output voltage from either of those pins? Would that do the trick?

That would turn your USB into fastboot cable. I spliced into a regular OTA cord running power to red wire leading to flash drive only and ground to blue wire, both PC and fkash drive. Started to work and realized that I accidentally snipped green data wire as well. That was late last night. Have not got back to it yet. I use a 32 GB Wi-Drive myself.
