ErrorMsg: "Make sure your chromecast is nearby" - Google Chromecast

I got my Chromecast today, I'm not sure why i bought it already as i live in Sweden and i couldn't even get the app from Playstore.
But to my problem. My Chromecast is plugged in the TV. I get the bootscreen on the TV and I see my chromecast id.
In the app on my phone, I see the Chromecast and I can click it to connect to it. It disables the Wifi for a second or two and then turns it on again. I wait for a few seconds and then this pops up:
"Could not connect to your Chromecast. Make sure your Chromecast is nearby." - It's barely a meter behind me.. and I've tried to have the phone just next to it, no difference.
I've tried to factory reset it. Unplug and replug. Reconnected to the wifi on my phone.
The router is brand new and a good one at that. I have a hard time believing that the issue lies within the Router. It's a Asus RT-N65U.
It's kind of dumb as well that one has to go to random forums to get help. Google doesn't even put a contact form anywhere on their Chromecast page.

The setup process doesn't involve your router or home network at all. The issue is either with your phone or the Chromecast itself. Try running the setup from a different device (I believe you can do it from a computer). If that doesn't work, the Chromecast is probably faulty.

Chromecast Timeout Issues - Please post your experience

I've had the device about a week now and we have been streaming a lot of content to it without any issues. But I had a strange issue with my Chromecast yesterday and I wanted to make note of it here. This isn't so much as a request for help, but I would like people to post if they are having similar issues so we can see how often it occurs and see if there are any similarities which may help pinpoint the bug.
After watching a Netflix show, I tried casting another show but could not. The TV screen switched to the red "Netflix" screen and it seem to try and buffer the show, but it never started playing. After a while (perhaps a minute), the tablet from which I selected the show to cast came up with a "Could not Connect" error. I tried selecting the show again, and could not get it to connect. I ended up unplugging the device and even then it would not connect. I think I was finally able to fix the problem by selecting another show which did start to play and then selecting the show that I really wanted to watch. However, I was trying lots of things, so it could be something else that actually fixed it. For example, I don't remember if I de-selected the chromecast and then re-select it. I've read that fixed similar issues that other people have had with the Youtibe app.
Here are some more details:
- chromecast is plugged into the TV via the short HDMI extension cord.
- it is powered via the USB power cable plugged into the USB transformer and 110v power (ie not powered via a USB port on the TV)
- the TV does not have HMDI control-ability
- the TV is a LG model 46D64U
- between the two shows when I had the problem, the Chromecast went to a black screen for a second or two and I thought I heard an audible click. In fact I thought the TV turned itself off because the click I think I heard is the same click I hear when the TV turns on or off. However the screen did come back on its own pretty quickly.
I just wanted to see how common this issue may be. So if you have had problems with your Chromecast timing out when trying to stream content, please post as many details about the situation as possible.
Thanks!
Brian
I am having the same issue. netflix can't send the request to chromecast through my tablet. it started a week ago and I haven't had it working since. I have tried clearing cache, uninstalling and re-nstalling. I have had to use my S3 to do it.

1. Change the date and time settings on your device to Automatic.
2. Clear the Netflix application data
Navigate to Settings.
Under Device, choose Application Manager or Apps section.
Can't find your Application Manager? Refer to your owner's manual or contact your phone manufacturer for further assistance.
Under Downloaded, choose Netflix.
Choose Clear data, then OK.
Re-enter the Netflix application and try playing again.

Chromecast BSOD

I managed to get two Chromecasts from Amazon via relatives in the USA. The one at my sons house installed and worked immediately. Very impressed down in sunny Southampton.
In my case, I've got mine plugged into a Toshiba 37X3030D TV, which is full 1080p. However, all I get is a blue screen and no sound on either of he two HDMI ports.
I've managed to install it blind using the Chromecast app on my MacBook Air (at least after I turned AP Isolation off on my Netgear router), and both my Mac and Chromebook Pixel think they are successfully streaming to it.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Any help, guidance or pointers would be really appreciated.
Sounds like it's time to call Google or Customer Support... can't fix hardware issues and so far this thing isn't hacked open very much to look at any software problems.

Has it done a software update yet? Lots of people were having issues with it working in their HDMI ports, until the software updates were pushed to it.
Have you tried doing a factory reset?
Seen the Chrome logo briefly!
Did a reboot using the Mac Chromecast app and briefly saw the Chrome logo on restart - then back to the blue screen.
I can't see what version of the firmware it's running, as neither the Mac app or anything on my Pixel or iOS devices can relay this data.
My sons one worked first time on his, so I will call Toshiba support next working day to see if they have firmware > 2.9 for my 37X3030D, hoping that may fix things. The TV should work on all the various US and UK line resolutions, 418i to 1080p. And will leave the Chromecast on just in case it picks up any updates.
Try doing the factory reset, not a reboot, using the button on the Chromecast next to the power cable. Press it for 15 - 20 seconds while it is powered up.
Done that

Chrome logo appears, spins, and then back to BSOD colour. Stil on the 12840 release though...
Fixed!
I rebooted the Chromecast this morning and it did a software update - with all progress viewable on the screen. On completion, up it came, Ready to cast. So, very happy, all working fine.

Chromecast all of a sudden disappeared

I don't get it, it was working just fine the other day... now I can't grrr my Chromecast to show up.
I've tried switching it to my other hdmi input with no success.
The light on the Chromecast is what looks to be on with a very rapid white blink... or it is actually just solid, can't really tell.
I've also unplugged and replugged my router and modern, still nothing...
Sigh, anyone else having issues?
It also does show up in my Chromecast app on the phone, just isn't working And coming on my tv.
Also, I verified the hdmi port works by switching my dvr box to the sane one the Chromecast was on.
Any thoughts?
I'm still new at this but I fixed one of my hangups recently by restarting my mobile device.
It's not showing up on the tv though... I think it's unrelated.

It should be a mid-paced blink, definitely visible on and off states, maybe 2-3 Hz?
Check your router's DHCP assignments to see if Chromecast got an IP.
Also check WiFi access points - if your Chromecast isn't connected to your WiFi network anymore, it will start broadcasting its own signal as Chromecast1234 etc.

I was getting a "blinking" white LED for "sure" on mine but the TV was also showing that it had to setup again but I was unable. Tried the extender and it reconnected by itself, removed the extender which only worked for a few days. Got a HDMI 90 degree adapter and never had the issue again, so far!

Well I think the unit somehow died. The weird thing is that my phone Chromecast app shows the devicE... but my tv will not display anything when I go to that hdmi input. I'm going to send it back to Amazon. This is SO weird

If you haven't already boxed it, try unplugging and replugging it on the TV's HDMI (with the TV on) in case there's some timing mismatch or something.

Can't... when i do so on the android app and it says check your TV for the code, the TV on that hdmi input has no signal.
Got my replacement unit and it works just fine.
I'm guessing my old one got borked while updating.
After my CC updated itself to Build 14651, it no longer works with my Yamaha AVR. The CC connects to the network, and I can see it in the Chromecast app, but the screen on the TV connected to my AVR goes black, as I explained here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48445263&posted=1#post48445263
Have you tried unplugging your CC from your HDMI port, then rebooting it (pulling and then reattaching the USB power) while the CC remains unplugged from the HDMI port? Once the CC's LED goes from various states of red to a solid white, plug the CC back into the HDMI port. That works for me.
My other two CCs are still on Build 13000, and they work just fine with my Yamaha AVR.
It's there away to do a hard reset? Try reinstall the software....just a thought.

After updating it shows a blank screen

So I woke up one morning turn on my TV I notice it was updating and thought nothing about it but then it went to a blank screen. I reset it then it wasn't connecting to wifi then I went on my computer and it says that if I did reset it wouldn't connect to my wifi unless I contacted my router provider. Didn't want to go through so I bought a new one. After I set it up and relaunched it went to a black screen again then exchange it and it happened again. It has nothing to do with the device it's the new update. I hope someone knows how to fix it. Please i like chromecast don't want to return it. Someone please help.

Mine just "died" too.
Didn't notice if it was updating but basically had been plugged into my TV and working for months, then i tried using and my TV would just say no signal when i switched to that HDMI port.
Called amazon and have a new one on the way.
bummer.

Google says it should work, just requires change to router settings.
Did you add your Chromecast MAC to the allowed list?

Fix
Mine seemed to be dead too. I tried reseting the device but without any success. The only fix by now is to remove Chromecast from HDMI, but keep power cable plugged in. So i start my tv without Chromecast being connected to hdmi port, and after the led on the chromescast became steady white, no blinking, i would connect it to it. It worked that way. Had to do this before each time i start my tv. I hope it will help u and hope that google will fix this in future update.

Yeah, Build 14651 is having problems booting up for me too. My CC ends up going "blank" when its plugged into my Yamaha AVR. It works fine when I plug it directly into my TV or if I let it boot up while unplugged from any HDMI port.
My other two CCs on Build 13000 work fine with my AVR.
I posted to this thread about this issue:

cast Flashing White, won't connect to Siemens SE572

Hi,
I've just bought a Chromecast this week and plugged it into my amp via the HDMI.
I got the correct screen on my TV, but I couldn't connect using the app, or manually. It said 'No Chromecasts found on ***'
It is plugged into the mains, not USB.
We have an Orange Siemens SE572 router. It is not on the list of supported routers. I've played with the settings a little bit, but no joy.
I've also taken the Chromecast away from the TV and just plugged it into the mains to see if the flashing white light becomes solid as I assume that I won't be able to connect until it becomes solid?
Any suggestions please?
Cheers

Flashing white light and either "Set me up" or "Reconnect me" on the TV means Chromecast is either not configured to connect to a wireless AP yet, or it cannot connect to the configured wireless AP.
In this mode, Chromecast becomes its own open wireless AP (with no access to anything else, obviously) broadcasting as Chromecast####. The device running the Chromecast app or accessing the manual setup then connects to the Chromecast#### network to configure Chromecast, providing the wireless AP SSID and credentials that it will eventually connect to.
Since you're getting "No Chromecasts found" it shouldn't have anything to do with your router, as the blinking white light means Chromecast isn't connected to your router anyway.
What device are you running the Chromecast app on? It automatically scans for nearby wireless networks named Chromecast#### but in some cases you may need to manually connect to the Chromecast#### network beforehand.
