I am yet to get this phone. But i have heard so many mixed opinions on this phone! Mostly negative.
I currently have a nexus 4. I just want to get peoples opinions on the
Xperia z display vs nexus 4 display? I know viewing angles are not good. but i don't plan to look at my phone from the side....

If your talking about just screen..Nexus 4 has the better calibrated screen..so when the calibration tool comes out for XZ it will probably beat it! But the XZ screen is also beautiful..specially the text are so crisp!
The color is not super vivid like the LED, and the contrast isn't very top class as well.
But besides these the screen itself is still pretty amazing! it's just sharp!
I actually dont think.that there's anything wrong with the display. Its the software. Look at photos with BE on...amazingly vivid colours - so the display can produce them, its just that in the UI it doesnt.
So many people complain about the viewing angles of the Z screen.... Why would you view it at an angle. How ridiculous would that look. It's a great phone with a great screen.

I think due to battery life. Battery tests show the phone is not great for long term video viewing. Almost certainly due to bravia engines extra processing requirement.
If it was on all the time, people would complain about battery life.

You should also check out the numerous videos on youtube comparing the xz and nexus 4. That way you can see the phones side by side and decide for yourself.
All the people saying that the screen looks bad, they must have eagle eye's. It looks much better than an iPhone's screen.

Let's be fair - XZ viewing angles are not that great. Even a tiny change of viewing point results in slight display fade.
But I honestly can't see how is that a problem. I'd rather have not-the-best viewing angles with 1080p crisp display with natural colours than oversaturated display with pentile matrix, black clipping and burn-in issues
i'm sorry. as much as i like the phone - you have to admit the screen is pretty bad compared to other offerings on the market.
even place it next to an older gen phone like the one x and it's screen is marginally better..
i personally don't notice the difference in DPI between last gen 720p screens and these 1080p screens, and thats coming from a note 2 where the DPI was almost half than this.
but the colors are bad, the contrast is pretty bad, viewing angles are terrible.
ofcourse this is all relative, if you come from a phone with a normal grade screen then its not so bad, but all the other high end devices on the market have top notch screens which side by side are totally putting this one to shame, if you can live with that - go ahead, its a very nice device.
but alot of these people are sounding like they are trying to convince themselves of something that just ain't true...
perhaps with better calibration tools in the future this can be fixed, but right now its something you are going to have to live with.

Well, to me you sound exactly the same I admit - the screen is not the best, and I never tried to convinve myself or others that it is, but you can't say it's bad, bad and terrible. And if you don't see the difference between Note 2 and XZ PPI - good for you, but for me the difference is very clear and visible.
It's simple - to each his own. If anybody is still in doubt - just go and check it in store, it's not ferbruary, it's available everywhere. If it's not for you - it's not for you. Simple as that

i didnt say the screen is terrible- its quite good, just sub-par compared to it's competitors, which is a shame because its not like the XZ has alot of advantages compared to it's competitors other than the water resistance and the design in general which is quite good.
but sure, as a device in its whole, there's nothing that's BAD about it, the screen is good, the performance is good, the camera is good, the design is good but when you put it next to a htc one, it's suddenly not such a good screen, the performance is lacking, the camera has its ups and downs, the battery is meh...
what i'm saying is you can't objectively say something is good or not without comparing it to it's direct competitors.
the galaxy 2 was a good phone, but compare it to current phones and its a piece of crap.
the xperia z is a great phone, and it has its advantages over it's competitors - heck, the water resistance just saved my phones life about 4 times yesterday alone... but the SCREEN is OBJECTIVELY not so good when you pit it against current gen devices, in fact- it's probably the worst 1080p screen on the market.
and while none of the 1080p screens on the market are actually bad, this one is still at the bottom of the list.
Look there's more than just viewing angles, deep blacks and over saturated colours. There's also detail and clarity as well as video playback and there, the Zs display is the best ever seen.

The Z totally owned the HTC One here. It's your choice. Lionking853 has also done a series of comparison videos in gaming and nothing compares to the Zs display.

Okay, i honestly thought the iphone 5 is miles ahead camera wise. Guess i was wrong, comparison makes me more than satisfied with the output.
The Iphone 5 Camera isn´t better, you can´t rely on such comparisons because you could so easily manipulate them in a way you like. After you had both smartphones in your hand you can decide which suites you better. But in the end its a phone which isn´t made for taking hq pics, like all other smartphones as well.
im just annoyed with the pinkish purple tinting in photos
Never owned iPhone so didn't know it was so close to Nexus 4 in camera department.
All iPhone does it add punch to certain colors like green to make the photo look good. Nexus 4 on the other hand had more accurate colors. Especially the first photo where sky color was pretty accurate with Nexus 4 where as iPhone have it purplish tinge

I own both phones, iP5 and N4 and the iP5 camera is much better no question about it.
I think our camera blows. Only cuz low light is horrible.it's the same as the galaxy nexus.but I can't complain since the price is half an iPhone.

The iPhone 5 suffers from horrible purple fringing when faced directly at the sun (or another source of light). Apple won't come up with a recall, just expect a fix once the 5s comes out.
The camera on the iphone 5 is better, its one of the best cameras out there on a phone.

+1 My wife's Galaxy S4 makes me wanna cry. And to the point about phones not taking HQ pics, today's phones are without a doubt the next generation of point and shoot. We NEVER take our camera anywhere anymore unless we just happened to remember it. Now there's phones coming with 41 megapixel and great lenses. Cameras are becoming more important as we shift to this digital lifestyle. I for one wish we had a little better camera. But it works for me..... For now.

I think the only reason iPhone camera *might* arguably produce better looking pictures is because of apples software which automatically adds a bunch of effects for the iSheep. I can just take a pic and edit it with default editor and I bet it would look better than iPhone s pics.

I remember having an iPhone and the camera is way better than the current Nexus 4 camera. Still room for improvement!
You also have to consider the price of the device out-right... N4 is a much cheaper phone using parts not has expensive as the iPhone5... if you take that into consideration, N4 puts up a good fight..
So if you compare it strickly on hardware without factor in price, there is no comparison the iPhone5 will be a better device...
Lots of Apple haters.. Then again it is XDA. Personally, and from a photographer's standpoint, my iPhone 4S took better images and videos than my Nexus. More specifically in low light situations. Can't see how the Nexus would also take better images than the iPhone 5. Because that would mean the Nexus takes better pictures than the Galaxy S4. Either way, I'm not saying our camera on or phone is terrible, but it most definitely isn't in the conversation of being in the top 3, and possibly not in the top 5.
As an owner of iPhone 4s, user of iPhone 5s and a new owner of Nexus 4, I'd say both iPhones have superior cameras in terms of image quality and colors. Nexus 4 has seems to have a faster camera though, and while the image quality isn't top, it is still quite good. Why would you expect a better camera on a much cheaper device anyway?
The issue I have with the N4 is that the pics look good in preview mode sat using up a quarter of the desktop screen but if you go full size...whoahhhhhhhhh. Noise noise noise.:silly:
I've tried several different camera apps (even one that will take 8MP 12MB .PNG shots) and the result is the same for all of them, just noisy full size shots, even in bright sunlight. So the issue with the N4's camera isn't compression at the file output stage it's somewhere earlier in the chain.
Colour balance is good though.
Someone really needs to hack that camera but I fear it may be a hardware limitation.

its behind s4 camera, not even talking about Lumia 920/925/1020. But again any phone looks like toy agaisnt Lumia cameras...
Personally from my experience all Nexus phones have come with crappy cameras. The problem is the company doesn't implement a really good camera for the Nexus which is beyond me. Even though it's an 8mp camera my note 2 takes way better still images as well as videos.
For instance on this phone when recording a video you can't click the screen to focus in on whatever your recording, instead it just takes a picture which is stupid. Quality isn't great.

I was lucky enough to get my Nexus 5 earlier today. Here are my first impressions. Please share yours!
My first thought was, when compared to my Nexus 4, is that the Nexus 5 is really light! Almost too light in my opinion.
The screen is beautiful. Its crisp and big. While the bezels are small, its not LG G2 small. Which disappointed me a bit. I'm pinning for an actual "edge to edge" display.
The soft rubber grip and slightly contoured back makes the phone feel better in the hand than my Nexus 4 did. Holding the phone almost feels like holding the Droid DNA a bit. But smaller.
The touch screen is a lot more sensitive than the Nexus 4. And the xda app likes to crash under kit Kat :-/
I'm annoyed at the IMEI sticker on the back. I feel like its going to peel away in a few days.
It doesn't torque in your hands like a cheap Samsung galaxy S3/S4. The build quality feels great. Almost like an HTC phone.
I would much rather have a metal band around the outside instead of rubberized plastic, but that's just me.
The Nexus 5 fits nicely on the Nexus 4 charging orb. When placing it on the orb, the bottom of the Nexus 5 rests on the countertop. No random phone slide offs like the Nexus 4,
Kit Kat is FAST! The keyboard is great. Probably due a lot to a much more responsive screen.
Most apps are working fine...but xda app crashes a lot. I suppose that's to be expected.
The battery life seems okay. I always am placing my phone on a charger, so I can't say I'm that great of a judge of battery life.
LTE performance with T-Mobile is the same between Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. I'm planning on switching back to sprint tomorrow....I had sprint for a few years. I went from the Evo LTE to the Nexus 4 on T-Mobile.
The camera...I'm a bit unimpressed so far. I was expecting a fast burst style. Like I had on my Evo LTE. Trying to take pictures of a 19 month old is tricky. I had a bunch of blurred photos.
Those are my day 1 impressions. What's everyone else's?

It's all different because everyone uses their phone differently. You can't judge how good your battery life will be based off of how someone else uses their phone. Wait for yours to come in and try it out.. it's the only way to figure it out for yourself :good:
Honestly, I am pretty disappointed Perhaps it is just my unit but the bottom left corner, where the phone rests naturally in my palm, is rather sharp and already I stopped playing with it because my hand got uncomfortable. Furthermore, I am really really missing the plastic buttons on the Nexus 4. They were smooth, soft and comfortable to rest my fingers on. These ceramic buttons have very sharp edges and the volume button, which I tend to rest my fingers on, feels really uncomfortable to me like it is going to cut my finger. These words are way too harsh but not inaccurate. Am I alone on this?

How? It seems pretty well stuck on there.. I don't want to start scratching at it to get it off only to find it wasn't supposed to be removed and leaves a nasty residue or even worse scratches the plastic.
Good to know about the camera. I have an 18 month and I was worried about the photo quality. Aosp ROMs always had blurry pics while TW camera on my Note 3 manages to get great shots with motion. I haven't taken my N5 out of the box yet, as I have someone wanting to trade me an LG G2 for it. This just confirms that I'm going to do that trade!

I had a couple app issues too. Taptu borked when I first installed and I had to reboot the phone.
It will take a few weeks for developers to get their app 4.4 compatible
I feel a little disappointed. I went from a Nexus 4 to this and I guess I'm having trouble seeing past the amazing that the jump from a GNEX to a Nexus 4 was. I like the bigger screen and the overall lightness. Battery is to be determine. I might be imagining this, but I feel the speakers on the Nexus 4 are much better. The back speaker is much louder and clear and the front is much clearer as well. Anyone else feel this way? Maybe I haven't spent enough time with the Nexus 5 to fully appreciate everything and maybe the introduction of custom roms will help.

Yea... but from what a lot of people are saying, the G2's camera isn't all rainbows and unicorns, either.
It may not be kit kat causing the crashes. XDA for me lately has been crashing all the time. It seems like some posts I can't click on with out it crashing while others work just fine. Just an FYI. And this is with a S4 running CM10.2

Please could you do a simple Touchscreen+Audio Latency test? So many reviews appearing around the web but none have tested Latency. Apparently the touchscreen on the Nexus 5 is pretty good so I hope it performs well.
For the people interested in the Nexus 5 for realtime music creation this is info we desperately need.
Anyway here is how to do a simple test:
Install a musical app, either drumming or keyboard.
Install a sound recording app,
Start recording audio and give the screen a good tap in the musical app, this way both the "tap" and resulting drum or keyboard sound will get recorded.
Open that saved .wav up in audacity then zoom in and observe the visual audio waveforms then measure the distance between the TAP and the sound actually playing using the timeline.
On my devices I was getting around 175ms if the particular music app used the "Sound Pool" class or 250+ if using "Audio Track" I'm running android 4.2. Anything under 100ms would start to be useful anything under 50ms would be amazing given googles track record in this area.

Attached the .png of audacity (picked it best I could) and the .wav file in a .zip file (stupid xda attachment restrictions!)

For camera, I'd go Sony Xperia Z / Sony Xperia Z1 (mini) or HTC One.
My wife is still using an HTC Evo 4G LTE (HTC One X version for Sprint) and the pictures are really good off of that phone. She gets great pics of our 19 month old with that phone.
I don't know that LG G2 camera would beat any of the three phones i mentioned above.

Thanks so much!!, that has provided us with some very good info, your test was perfect, I could clearly hear and see the TAP's and the resulting notes. All you had to do it zoom in audacity to see the waveforms and make the measurements.
I also had a audio file from a Xperia Z1, so I put them head to head:
The results of total latency (Touchscreen+Audio) :
Xperia Z1 android 4.3 180ms
Nexus 5 android 4.4 102ms
One question, what application did you use? There are two popular ways to playback sound, one is OpenSL ES audio, another is SoundPool,
for OpenSL ES audio you can use the app called "Music Synthesizer for Android" it is made my someone working at Google they have made all the optimizations to playback sound as fast as possible, or you could try my app haha: "Tablet Drums" at the moment I'm using "SoundPool" I will swap to OpenSL ES audio too if the results are better.
Anyway thanks very much the results are good enough to persuade me to purchase a nexus 5 too.

1. The back sticker? Seriously, Google?
2. The icons are so big. Maybe its normal for all 5" inch phones, but looks not normal to me. They look stretched.
3. What was the fuzz about the KitKat? Was that really needed? All I see is a few updated apps.
4. The display looks bad. Worse viewing angles than on the N4 and blacks as well. Everything looks washed out on it.
5. I purchased the OEM bumper and that's a total Google ripoff. Feels more like a $19.99 product, but definitely not the $34.99. The phone looks good in hand, but once you put it into a bumper it kills it. Makes the phone bulky as hell.
6. The speaker. It does the job, but it goes through the whole phone.
7. I don't care about the spec, the N5 basically brings nothing on the table except for the LTE support that was needed. Glad Google didn't hold the event, otherwise would have been a disaster.
For all those experiencing bad screen compared to nexus 4, the nexus 5 screen is uncalibrated, or calibrated poorly. Faux said that kernel rgb control should be possible, so it shouldn't be much longer until we get better picture. BTW, I think the actual LCD panel inside of this is very similar, if not the same, as the G2. Its just the calibration and software saturation LG implemented on the G2 to make it look like that.

1. What's wrong with that sticker? Do you guys leave it on the phone? Just peel it off!
2. Use a custom launcher.
3. When you just see "a few updated apps" then you didn't really use KitKat yet.
4. Perhaps I am lucky but my display is great. I don't check viewing angles... who looks on his phone from the side. Other than that I really like the colours.
7. If you don't care about specs then why did you get the N5 anyways?

Like you decided to make a thread about the camera when you could have posted the same thing in one of the open threads....
I, for one, love this camera. It takes pictures where no other phone can. The only smartphone camera that I would prefer over it is the new iPhone 5S camera, which was released half a year later.

I think they are both crap I cant wait till we get something awesome like the nokia built into that windows phone i want a 41 mp camera or whatever insane number it is... Thats something i cant wait to see for androids...

Don't know if we're going to see another PureView-esque camera for a while. I just don't think the profit margins or demand are out there to justify anything beyond the incremental bumps in MP count we've been seeing 4 to 5, 5, to 8, 8 to 13, etc.). Might be nice, but to be honest I'd rather see improvements in battery tech right now.
That being said, point of thread is a little confusing.

Well battery tech has come quite a long way in the past 5 years... But yeah I'd like to see all the beast tech put into one phone.
Providing a truly great camera would increase the price of the device by too high a margin. Why do you think the N5 has the same camera as the 4? To keep costs down. When you get right to it, everybody wants everything in one device, but don't want to pay a grand for it. So, something has to give. The N5 has a better processor, screen, connectivity, and gorilla glass. They couldn't upgrade the camera too, without losing the 399 pricepoint. So......I haven't seen a device yet that doesn't have umpteen threads about the camera being less than marketed. Whattayagonnado
Well sorry that I created so much drama opening this thread. Just the camera is so disappointing. Sorry had to vent.

What could have been.... Same focus on camera but with 8 ultra pixel instead (or whatever it's called) removable battery so extended batteries could be made and used, micro sd slot, dedicated camera button (don't know why that is going away).
Subwoofer, 5.1 surround, slide out gamepad, stylus that doubles as a microphone so I could do karaoke games my phone,.... Lol sorry couldn't resist but the above paragraph is what I'm hoping they do next or at least Samsung adds stereo speakers to their next phone hopefully the s5

The camera sucks for people with the purple-tint issue... I've seen examples - even those with a mild hardware defect have foggy-looking pics and may not exactly see much purple tint in them. If your pictures suck, prove it so we can determine it isn't defective and not just the photographer.
I'm a photographer - not making my living with it, but certainly more knowledgeable and skilled than the average person. This camera is great. It can be a little quirky and it takes a little getting used to, but it's far better than any mobile camera I've used. The shallow depth of field is a nice thing to have for macros or some "artsy" pics. The clarity is great, but yes, snapping into light greatly diminishes the dynamic range - this is true for any camera but I'll agree this is worse off on this one. The gains in low-light performance are far better than most other mobile cameras and as long as you didn't get stuck with a defective unit, this phone rocks.
In regards to the 41 pureview camera request... wtf are you thinking? The ONLY benefit this gives is superior digital zoom/cropping possibilities. adding more pixels does nothing more than give you room to crop or enlarge. For perspective, 3MP is what is needed for 4x6 prints without any cropping. This means the 4 MP camera is plenty to print from, although not much for enlargements. I HAVE printed 8x10s from the HTC One and they've looked great. Pixels and image quality are unrelated, despite what years of digital camera marketing teams want you to believe.
I think the One's camera makes a really great companion to a more proper camera like a DSLR. When I went to New Zealand recently the two cameras played off of each other quite well. The DSLR for zoomed shots that I had time to compose and the One for quick snaps where a really wide angle and speed was best. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't have the purple tint issue, and even if I did it's really easy to correct, I go in and tweak white balance and colors on most of my pics anyway.

Well said, however I don't think you fully understand the purple tint issue. White balancing isn't correcting the problem at all. It appears to fade in from the edges and cover portions of the image like a fog. Others have it randomly scattered in weird patterns. White balancing would worsen the portions of the image that aren't affected, if it does anything at all. I'm convinced it's a hardware problem after watching a YouTube video of a One owner showing the issue on his torn apart HTC One. When he put his finger behind the camera heatsink to help dissipate the heat, the purple tint went away. When he let go of it and let it get warm again, the issue worsened. Fortunately, I don't have the issue. But others have shown how this is a serious problem and white balancing likely won't do any good to fix it.

Looks fine if you ask me.
I'd rather have it more saturated than have it looked washed out.
Its different compared to GS4 or iPhone but not bad. Considering I regularly get 3± hours screen time on a 24+ hour cycle I have no complaints.

Compared to my S2, the screen colours and black are amazing. Hard to even look at my s2 now.
But.... Some can find fault in anything somehow. Lol

The screens and saturation levels do vary a little phone to phone. I have played with 3 Moto X's quite a bit now and each have been different. My first one isn't over saturated at all, the screen on it has a little more yellow to it. The other two have more of a blue tint and show more saturation. The whites do look better on the second two but the first is easier to look at in the dark.
I don't think there is any way to adjust it or even change the DNIe mode like Samsung allows. People wrote custom kernels for the Nexus 4 to allow color adjustment but there aren't nearly as many devs working on the Moto X, so you're probably stuck with what you get. I don't imagine that they do any factory calibration to speak of, so of course it will vary greatly between panels.
Unfortunately, oversaturated is the new properly calibrated. The problem is that it has a better off-the-shelf look when people who are clueless are comparing models in the store--hold a Moto X or GS4 up next to an iPhone or Nexus 5 and the colors "pop" more, which seems to be more appealing to the average consumer than the more muted appearance of a display with proper sRGB calibration.
Cool. Thanks guys. In on a xperia z1 and the display is amazing. So using the motox is very different. But yep I should be used to. Another thing I noticed is that is way less bright under the sun. Again I think is just a calibration thing since we if you switch to manual you can increase it much more than the way our light sensor detect it.

You can try the app Lux to control auto brightness and Screen Adjuster to try to correct the colors.
