Motorola Skip - Moto X Q&A

Is there any way I can use the motorola skip to do anything other than unlocking your phone ? Like using it to turn on wifi or something like that. Is this possible or did motorola make it to where it can't be rewritten? I like the skip but to me it is faster to just use a regular pin or pattern

If you have one, why not try programming it to do something else with NFC Task Launcher? I don't know the answer it's worth a shot.

I'm fairly certain you can't reprogram them, and using them for other tasks is going to be difficult if you don't turn off the NFC unlock, because it will keep thinking it's a skip dot.
Instead, I recommend getting unprogrammed generic NFC tags for about $1 each on eBay. You can even program them to be skip dots if you want, but beware - they will permanently be skip dots and you can not reprogram them after that.
I bought the pack of 10 linked below and programmed 2 to be skip dots, and then set up another one on my washing machine to launch a 60 minute timer when tapped.

Not in my experience. You need to use another phone (or tablet, not an X) with NFC and NFC task launcher to reprogram them.

Taking notes with the Nexus 7

I know some people want to use this to take notes, and I think it's perfect for that. It can all be done for $2, as well.
1) Go to your local dollar tree/store, and get a stylus (or 8) from there. They work great, and it allows me to keep one at the office/home/etc. If that fails, you can get them from Amazon (they look exactly the same).
2) Buy 7notes (we all have $25, buy some damn legal apps already).
3) Profit! The app works at a keyboard stand-in, and it predicts your words perfectly (I have the worst handwriting, and it has yet to mess up). For syncing stuff, I suggest Evernote (free and nice interface). FYI, Evernote is like dropbox for notes. They are availible everywhere, and with the addon program (also free) Skitch, you can save drawings with your notes.
Alternatively, if you don't want your writing turned into digital text, you can use Freenote, which works great for straight writing/drawing.
Also, root your Nexus 7. If for no other reason than to change the DPI to 160 (tablet mode with the buttons on the lower left hand side, notifications on the lower right, etc) and to get AdAway. The stock browser is also really slick with the thumb navigation menu.
I have not tried it yet, but Evernote allows taking notes in freehand. Used it on my KF in many meetings.
Update, didn't not he mentioned it at the end...

Thanks for the heads up on that app. I am a big Evernote user. Being able to hand write and have it convert to digital text will be great.
How good are these $1 sytli?
The Verge recently had an article about iPad styli and the well reviewed ones were $15 +
would post a link but apparently new users are not able to post links. Just googling "verge stylus review" should bring it up.
I'm thinking about using my Nexus 7 to take notes when I go back to continue my education after a not-so brief break but I would definitely like a good stylus.

Is that the exact same stylus? Just want to know what to look for/ask for, most Dollar Tree employees are not the most technical..
How can I do handwritting with evernote from my N7?
Also I'm looking into different apps for this. I want something that will sync but still be available offline.
Install Skitch. Run it, do your thing, hit the elephant icon at top-right to save it to Evernote.

Did you read my post? Everything is there. Or do you mean you DO NOT want your handwriting transferred to text? In that case follow the above directions (for Stitch).

That is the EXACT (from looking at the picture). I have NO issues using it. Anytime I'm writing on the N7, it follows the pen.

oops, didnt finish. Freenote combined with Evernote would be just what i need, but I also need to have access to all my notes offline. Evernote charges too much for the ability to have my notes offline. Is there a cheaper alternative?

That's pretty cool and everything, but I don't know that I want it as a keyboard replacement outside of the app itself. Did anybody see a setting that only allows the handwriting input for the app only?

How much does Evernote charge? I don't quite understand the "have your notes offline" thing. Would you mind elaborating?
Wow, 7Notes is amazing! I can't believe how well just using their keyboard entry (freehand writing area) works with any app.
This is one of the best stylus apps I've used. I've been disappointed in the past because my iPad had so many options and none of my Android tablets seemed to register the stylus well. Not only does the Nexus 7 read the pen perfectly, the better sharing options in Android make it so much more useful. Just blown away by it.

Offline notes means access to all my previous notes and notebooks when not connected to wifi. This is available in Ever note premium. If I'm willing to pay 45 dollars per year or 5 dollars a month for the premium upgrade... I need offline access to my notes, since the whole point is having all my notes with me without carrying a stack of notebooks, and without access to wifi in my office, or while traveling to our various offsite business partners. But I'm not willing to pay that much for it, and I don't want to sign up for new recurring bills either. All I really need is a better way to save and organize notes created in free note.

Terrible Camera

This camera is frustrating me. I'm trying to cash a check and it's so bad I can't even deposit a check through my mobile bank of America app. Never had this problem on my gs3.
Anyone else having problems with anything like this?

No camera issues here, but haven't done online check deposit.
You didn't happen to mention what version of Jelly Bean you were running.
There was a camera update in 4.2.2 and Verizon has recently released 4.4 KitKat.
Perhaps check for updates if you haven't already.

I had the same problem with the Chase app. The problem is that for some reason, the check gets cut off on the left side even though the whole check is in the viewfinder. I pull back a little more to make sure to get the whole check and it works fine.

Yeah, its my US Bank app that messes the picture up as well. I deposit my checks all of the time, but it will stretch the picture vertically and shrink it horizontally.

The Bank of America app just doesn't work right on some phones. It's pretty crappy. Not the fault of the Moto X camera. Never works with my HTC One either. Pretty sure the app doesn't handle cameras with 16:9 aspect ratio sensors correctly.

I still couldn't get the Chase app to take a good enough picture to deposit, but they just put a new version out that put black bars on the screen to restrict the area of the check image, and it works for me now.
It's not the camera, it's the app. I first started having issues with the BoA app on my Note 2 after an update awhile back. I found that holding the phone about 12" above the check works best. I always have to make sure all the corners are visible, make sure there are no shadows visible, and the check has to be as flat as possible.

You have an app looking for location. Pretty normal.

I have the same issue in Nexus 5 running Stock Rooted Lollipop.
Security - Smart unlock - trusted places....
This is what you looking for!
I am having the same issue. As soon as I unlock the phone, the GPS icon comes on and goes away very quickly. It has nothing to do with Smart Lock. Some type of app is requesting location upon unlock...
Go to location in settings, it tells you all the apps searching for location!
I have the same thing. I'm sure it's an app just don't know what.

Thought it was smart unlock as well but I disabled the location portion of it and it is still happening. Still looking.. Will report back...
So I turned off access to all apps that were listed in the location settings and still its being sent. The only way it stopped is turning off location totally. I'm returning my unit Monday any way as I now want the 64gb version and will be monitoring the threads until my 64gb ships..

Just chiming in to let you know that my Galaxy S3 does the same thing as well. I don't think it's a Nexus problem or even a Lollipop problem, just think that's what Android does.
It happpens to me too on my Lollipop Nexus 5.
I wonder if all of you have Google Fit installed... maybe it is related to that app
Mine also does this. With GPS turned completely off. I disabled Fit.
I even downloaded voodoo carrier iq detector because it kind of reeks of that.
This battery has me ready to switch phones. I hate the thought of it but I am getting 3-3.5 hours SOT with everything disabled (location, auto backup pics, only apps installed are battery/wakelock detectors).
It wouldn't be so bad but I see too many screenshots of people doubling my SOT without disabling anything

Custom button mappings using custom firmware

Hi all,
I have an original pebble that has a non functioning back button. Unfortunately it is an earlier version without a screwed on back meaning there is no way to open it up and fix any loose connections without completely destroying the watch.
I was wondering if it would be possible to create a custom firmware with the back button remapped to something like long press up. If not then it'll be a sad end for my faithful watch.
Cheers
Andrew
contact pebble support and ask how do you get it fixed you may get lucky you and get the option of RMA or a way to get it fixed cheaply

Then it's just because of the level of security used for Gpay. I don't personally mind, my face unlock is lightning. I came from my Pixel 2 XL and the face unlock has been faster with a higher rate of success than the fingerprint scanner on my old Pixel.

For vending machines it's alright since it's face up but those flat terminals I have to tap, lift, verify, confirm and then re-tap. I know it's little but when I first got the phone it didn't have that extra confirmation since the phone was already unlocked.

Just got back from my local 7 eleven and I used my Gpay to see how mine behaved and paying using the actual Gpay app, I did not have to scan my face again. Also I completely forgot about the Gpay shortcut I have enabled and once unlocked, I can instantly bring up my credit/debit cards and pay from any screen or app by holding the power button. I have a gen 5 Carlyle too. What authorization are you talking about? Setting up a card for the watch takes several steps but once it's done, Google Pay is just a swipe and tap away for me. I turn on the screen (I keep "always-on screen" option on and tilt-to-wake off), swipe down, and tap the Pay icon. My default card pops up and I just put it close to the tap the pay area. Even quicker is putting Google Pay on a watchface but I don't use it enough to do that. I would rather have something like battery, weather, or Google Health info.

What happens to me is that I need to put on an authorization method on the watch. Either a pin or password and anytime I use the watch, even if it's not for GP, it asks for the pin code or pwd. Even if I go to check notifications I have to put in my pin. I don't use always on but I do use tilt to wake. You think I need to change that in order for it to be easier to use? I'm going to check Reddit now too see what they suggest or if anyone is having issues like I am.

It's very annoying. I think one of the problems is that I use my metal watchband a lot and it's kind of loose on my wrist, purposely so. So it might think it's off my wrist when it slides around. Seems like others are having the same issue but I'll look into it further. I have always used my phone for GP anyway so it's not a huge deal but it would be cool to be able to use it.
