This phone is underappreciated and its a shame! - Motorola Atrix HD

A Motorola phone with awesome hardware, and best of all an Unlocked boot loader should see more dev action than it has. Yes I know in terms of phones its old, but with an eb40 battery, HD screen and LTE on T-Mobile(25 down 10 up consistently), this phone is insane. I literally have everything on, Google now, location services, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE and the battery doesn't want to die. Averaging anywhere from 5-7 hours sot everyday with very hard use. This is my third atrix HD and I keep trying to convince myself that there are better devices out there, which in terms of shear cutting edge hardware and bleeding edge performance, there is, ie. gs4, HTC one, etc. But those devices can't and will not do what this phone does. GPS is dead accurate and fast, signal strength is always awesome and never drops, call quality couldn't be better, screen clarity is perfectly fine, phone never gets overheated. I could keep going on, but I've had three cups of coffee today so far and needed to rant.

What ROM are you using? And I completely agree with you.

Holoblur

I agree whole heatedly with you. Every time I think about newer phones my Atrix HD calls out to me and I say nope my Atrix is still as awesome as it was the day I got it. I'm on Holoblur as well and I'll never look back. It's a great ROM that runs like a dream and keeps on giving. I praise Motorola on this phone

Gsm moto phone with expandable storage and a huge battery that keeps the phone slim. This is what every phone should be based off of.

I agree 100% have you looked at the AHD's sorry excuse of a successor, the moto x? The hardware specs are almost the same. Plus, the fact that our beloved HD has an SD slot makes it a win. I ran PAC 4.2.2 as my first rom and went to HoloBlur (and loved it) then went to PAC 4.3 (btw awesome group, always something going on and we've got an amazing leader, one the best devs on the Atrix forum). I've had a few Androids (never bought any apple products) and this my favorite so far
Edit: One more thing, I too am also running on mad amounts of coffee (at least 4 cups:sly::thumbup: )

The moto x is fast and optimized but hardware wise its not bleeding edge

Have a quick question. I currently have a GS2 and I'm thinking about moving to a Atrix HD. Would it be worth it? I mostly want it because I've heard you can put the Maxx's battery into the Atrix.

I'd pick this over the gs3 any day of the week. And it stomps the s2.

Simple short answer, yes. I picked my white atrix HD up on eBay for $130 plus $45 for the brand new battery and a ballistic case for $19. You won't regret it.

Nope. The hardest part is peeling the back off the phone and getting the battery out. I'll sell you mine for a price

To be honest, everyone who sees my phone is almost always impressed with something about it (home screens, the rom, the actual phone itself)...
I've tried other phones over and over, and for me, only the Atrix HD can satisfy (even if the battery isn't the best, but it's not like I'm not used to it...)
#mostsatisfying2012 ?
Oh and the Moto X isn't that bad of a successor...
Without it, we probably wouldn't have gotten Active Display for all the roms...
[EDIT]
Before I forget to ask, anyone here use a Trident Aegis case for the phone? I was looking to get one but I wanted to know whether or not the silicone/rubber warps...
My otterbox is falling apart and I really don't want another one...

No but the ballistic is pretty good
Sent from my Atrix HD using Tapatalk

I'll 2nd the ballistic. Good and cheap case. On and off real quick so sd access isn't a pain.

The ballistic is a little more refined than the otterbox commuter also. First otter box I'm disappointed in. It doesn't fit this phone well at all. Also just an update to battery life on holoblur. Streaming Pandora, browsing forums, general use on smartassv2 with noop is getting me 50 minute of screen on time per 10% battery with LTE enabled . That's insanity!
Sent from my Atrix HD using Tapatalk

Yeah the commuter didn't fit very well especially with the. Battery mod. The defender fits pretty good though.

+1 on the ballistic case. My wife has the otter box commuter and the quality doesn't even compare.

Keeping it fersure... getting 10megabits down with 6/up. snappy and fast... rooted here.
came from a droid incredible with a dope rom from skyraider... I was running for 36 hours at a time with no kernel changes or undervolt... so my only complaint is the batt life sucks in comparison.

Welcome to 4G. Its not the phone its 4G that sucks your battery. I will say this; The bionic is by FAR the best on battery life compared to all 4G phones on the market right now.
I adore it. I came from a Moto Droid that had a display that died on me, so I was waiting for this.
Yeah, the screen's pixels are a little annoying at times, but other than that its speeds are INCREDIBLE, the new motoblur or whatever it is called now isn't obtrusive (the phone is actually fast enough to run it where it is actually attractive), and best of all it feels great in the hand.
Also, the extended battery's replacement back for the phone doesn't add that much width to it, making it a really good purchase. Shame none of the cases they had in stock support the extended battery.
One thing that I think people ignore when writing about new phones is the sound quality, and many people I have called are astounded when I tell them that I'm on a cell phone. I was on the highway going 60 mph with the windows and roof open, trucks all around me, and my dad thought I was on a landline when I called him. However they made the microphone, they got it down perfectly.
Now, I *NEEDED* a phone because of work, so it isn't an option to wait for the Droid Prime or the iPhone 5. Am I happy with the Bionic? Absolutely. Would I have waited for an even better phone if I could have? Perhaps.
I feel like when phones come out, they are outdated within a few days unless it's an iPhone. Eventually you have to bite the bullet, and I think that the Bionic is the best bullet I've ever bitten into!

CM7 on the Tbolt has a toggle, but ya, I can see this as a pain on this phone. However, if you are using 4G - try juice defender. When the screen is off it will turn off data (and you can have your data turn on however often you wish to check for new data etc).
Highly recommend it.
I had to charge my phone yesterday twice. I went about 1.6hrs on the original charge then fully charged it. With heavy use it needed a charge around bedtime(2130). Today I got it off the charger at 0530 and used it heavy for about 40 mins, then barely touched it and it's at 70%. I have juice defender and it set to CDMA only. I do not like the battery life so far but I has ATK on it. I took it off and will see how it goes. I think the task killer is more harm then good.
Does anyone know the battery life with 4G turned off?
No 4G at all in my state yet, but our area should be getting it this year.

Yeah and I would imagine there is a lot of bloat that can be removed with custom ROM's or tweaking CPU settings.
//oops.. double post.
I am so temped to say forget and go back to old faithful.... Ip4. I can go like two entire days on a single charge. I admit I have never used an android phone without the ATK. Maybe that's my problem.....
I like it coming from two Htc phones. Im only having an issue with the vibrate sounding really annoying like its broken and the battery only dropping by the 10's. It dropped from 100 to 90 then to 80%. Nothing in between. Im on an extended battery and seems to be doing okay so far.

Myself as well. My only complaint is that with the extended battery it makes it feel like I'm holding a brick when compared to regular battery, but that's a small complaint considering how well the battery performs... It's just how thin the device is when compared to other LTE devices with regular battery...
Rooted in seconds and im really happy with it now. Just make sure you update the bb binary once rooted. It makes a hell of a difference imo

Bionic is great! But Droid Razr better?

I got the Bionic a couple weeks ago and it's been pretty awesome so far. But I saw the Razr pop up (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_...l-core-processor-lte-support/?tag=epicStories) and kind of got bad a feeling that I shouldn't have been so hasty getting the Bionic.
I lost sleep over this too. Ultimately I resolved that I'd keep my Bionic. I can only imagine what the phones on the horizon with a 720p res display are going to do to the battery. Also, until we see more phones with the Ice Cream Sandwich O/S, I'm staying put.
Yeah, that RAZR is straight doinggggggggggggg

Honestly, this is how it's going to be for any piece of electronics you buy. "This is good but the next thing is better." If you keep waiting for the best thing ever you probably will never get anything. I say stick it out w the Bionic and when your upgrade comes up I'm sure the RAZR will look like Zach Morris' phone from Saved by the Bell (OK maybe not that bad).
I hear you
I get it no one wants to get a phone a 2 months later its replaced by a better one.however I love the bionic I have had one or two glitches unlike others I just got lucky. Its super fast I think the screen looks great and I watch Netflix. The pentile screen also uses a small amount o of battery compared to the other screens
id return my bionic if you guys updated from the charge or thunderbolt and wait for this droid razr, its going to be sick

They won't post a release date until last minute. I think the Bionic was a placeholder at this point, they just wanted the name to make them money. This device will probably be leaps(maybe not bounds) better.
I don't think it will be a huge improvement.. Honestly as of right now I see no need to upgrade my phone I have yet to find anything that would slow down my phone. Never really experienced lag and flash runs smooth... After I installed DroidTh3ory's ROM my phone has had 100x better battery life as well...
It's announced today - coming early Nov to VZW
From PC World's review
There's a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display (that's 960-pixel by 540-pixel resolution), an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video capture, an HD front-facing camera, and 32 GB of memory, split between internal storage and a microSD card. It's also a 4G LTE phone.
On the outside, the Droid Razr sports laser-cut woven Kevlar fiber and a Gorilla Glass display, highlighted by aluminum accents and wrapped around a stainless steel core. A splash guard is designed to protect the phone from flying liquids.
Motorola's stuffed a 1,780 mAh battery into the Droid Razr, and claims that will give a user 12.5 hours of 3G talk time or 8.9 hours of video playback

Yup, I've been tracking it all morning. So as of now, I'm on the fence about selling my Bionic for that bad boy. What to do, what to do?
Sure the material looks better in theory, same RAM 200 mhz more? Wonder how much extra performance you will see. Super Amoled with pentile subpixel display right? Not sure about this one team, I also feel kinda torn.
I currently have a partially working Thunderbolt and was going to switch out for a Bionic on Friday, until I saw the RAZR announcement this morning. I went over the specs and hardware/software wise there are no major differences whatsoever... The appeal of the RAZR seems to be it's design. It's "pretty" and built to take a beating. Looks like you could beat someone to death with it and it will still function 100%.
I am now debating if I should still get the Bionic or hold on to this Thunderbolt a bit longer and get the RAZR. What bothers me is they say they are taking pre-orders on the 27th but no one(not even Verizon) will say when the phone will actually be released.
In b4 we see an article "Nerd beat to death by RAZR smartphone... PZNERD"
2-3 months after the RAZR comes out, HTC or Samsung will release something you wish you would have waited for. I waited 10 months for the BIONIC, I'm going to enjoy this badboy for as long as I can. I've learned not to look forward to any more phones in the future. Unless you are willing to buy a new phone every 2-3 months, you will never have the best for long.
Maybe Verizon should consider leasing these phones as the technology is growing faster than most people's wallets can afford.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
How much you all want to bet the GSIII will be out by February? That'll be the phone of all phones.
While the Razr does look good it doesn't look like it will be leaps and abounds above the bionic, plus it has a locked bootloader also, so you would be in the same no custom kernal boat. With DroidTh3ory's Blurr3d and D3Blurr3ed ROMs i don't see the need to jump ship yet. Now maybe when the Nexus or another powerful phone with an unlocked bootloader comes out then i would consider it, but after investing the money in the Bionic i couldn't imagine paying full retail price, probably between $500-$600, for another phone so quickly.
There will ALWAYS be something better in the future! Get what you want and enjoy it. Don't beat yourself up for buying what you have because a new one is coming out soon. And those of you without a bionic, don't b*tch at people who have it by saying they should have waited.
The Bionic is a great piece of work.
Of course there will be better phones soon, but Android can always put out an update that makes the current devices even better.
~INB4 i smack somebody~
I think the Bionic will be a better phone because they will probably try and make the razor too sleek and have to sacrifice things such as battery life and hardware just my 2 cents

Not me. I'm sticking to my policy of never spending more than $50 which is why I just recently got ,my droid 3 brand new with my two year renewal. Got my wife's free with her renewal a week later. So in two more years will get a Droid 5 or 6 or whatever is the 6 month old but already EOL phone for $50 or less. By the way, the phones we upgraded from were Droid 1's that we got 2 for $99.
Droid 3 is good for me
Yep I got mine for a penny and the idea of spending 199 plus accessories just doesn't seem worth it. I'm not a power user and actually had a razr and turned it in to best buy because the battery life on 4g is terrible , and was having trouble dropping data when 3g 4g was switching. So far D3 has had no trouble. Probably just gonna buy a car dock and save the money. Thanks for the input.

I've had a D1,D2, and D3. My favorite is still the D2. I switched to the D3 for the keyboard. Performance wise, D2 on cm7 and D3 on debloated are about the same. I'm not a power user, so battery life doesn't matter to me too much as long as I can get a full day.
Also, My D2 is really a MS2, but its the same thing.
The Droid 4 is basically the Droid 3 without the "chin", plus 0.2ghz, which is going to be doable in a very short time (I hope =P) and more ram (ok, this is nice). Keyboard and camera are the same. Not quite a great upgrade.

You mean plastic backing - right? And water repellent. Definitely won't survive submerging.
I also have all of them - D1 - (MS1 actually), Droid 2 (Global) and Droid 3 (XT860 4G to be precise). My favorite still seem to be the D2G. D3 was a disappointment mostly due to 1/2G ram and (for me) the pentile screen.
D4 seems well balanced phone - I like the look. They fixed the RAM issue, but left screen the same as on D3 (major let down!) At least they could have placed the screen from ATRIX2!
Verizon 4GLTE does nothing for me since I am not in US 99% of the time.
Judging from the reviews, phone seem to move quite smooth thanks to the expanded memory.
Bottomline - if they release HSPA/LTE variant that works with Canadian operators, I will consider it.
Just got the Droid 4. Came over from sprint. I had an epic 4g. Sprints service was not the best but from everyone i have talked to and everything that i have read, Verizon is the way to go.
I don't feel to ripped off TBH. After a DX and now a D3, I know I'll never go back to Moto. Battery life sucked the first two days I had it. I started using SmartActions and the battery extender that comes with it plus juice defender. I used my phone all day yesterday, I left it off the charger and still had 53% on my battery at noon the next day.
Thats about the same life span as an Iphone.
Hardware performance is great out of the SGS3 and the One X the Atrix HD is just as fast, or faster. Once it's rooted and some changes can be made to the build.prop I see the Atrix HD beating the SGS3 easy in performance. The LTE performance is worth it, and the Atrix HD keeps up with it well.
The phone feels solid, no loose parts that rattle, and the construction feels solid with no feeling of plastic flexing when holding the phone. The Kevlar weave pattern on the back look modern and the rubberish feel makes it secure in your hand for calls.
People complain about the Camera, but it could be a lot worse. For the most part its an improvement over the Atrix 2 which it replaced.
I use the Facial recognition and the front 1.3mp camera hasn't had any problems picking up my face in sunlight or indoor low light.
All of the camera issues can be solved if you know how to setup your shots instead of relying on software to auto focus & auto iso.
The One X just felt like a toy in my hand, and I couldnt stand the UI. The SGS3 is nice, but for the price I expected far better build quality, and the touchwiz launcher is downright ugly and belongs on the Iphone. With the Atrix HD everything is as close to stock as you can get except for the launcher and Circles widget.
Thanks for replying we have it at Wal-Mart wireless where I work and it cool just can't rely test it as much as I would like without getting caught playing with it all day. I had the s3 for about 3 days and didn't like it because of touchwiz. I like how the ui is basically stock android with Motorola's icons. It runs smooth without it being plugged in to these horrible chargers here at Wal-Mart which ruin these phones. I don't mind the little lose in the screen size since its not a big difference. Screen to me seems more detail than one x and colors pop more to me mabe not to someone else's eyes the only thing that I'm questioning is battery life since some say it's not good but if the smart actions work and the battery saver part does well then maybe I'll like it

If you didnt like the S3 and you dont like the One X, then you'll really like the Atrix HD.
At least I did and I know a few others who traded down from the SGS3 and love the HD
I got my Motorola Atrix HD in the black color cause I didnt see the white one, but they both look really sexy.
Edit: I hated touchwiz. I had it on my Captivate before I switched to Cyanogen. I miss my Captivate.
I love the one x but I've always like Motorola I had the photon on sprint I liked it a lot but I'm just one to go from one phone to the next. I put my sim in it and it picked up better signal and data speed than my one x where I'm at. Constantly. I'm in hspa+ and got average of 5 mps while the one x is 2-4

I dont get 4g in my house, but my 4g LTE coverage is awesome around here. I Constantly see 20-25Mbs Download and 15Mbs upload from my Atrix HD
It has a better Upload speed than my cable internet.

should I buy the D4

Everyone here owns one I assume.
Should I buy a droid 4?
And what are the pros and cons?
Online video reviews are way to biased
It's all up to you. If you MUST have a physical QWERTY keyboard, then it's probably one of the best choices, but here's my own list of pros and cons:
Pros:
-Decent dual core processor, can be overclocked up to 1.4 GHz using myfishbear's scripts
-One of the best hardware keyboards you can find on a phone
-Build quality is good, feels sturdy
-Call quality is clear, haven't had any dropped calls
-Screen is pretty bright when you need it to be
-Loudspeaker is... loud.
-4G speeds are supposed to be good, but I haven't tried
-8MP camera with 1080p video
-Docks available (I use a Motorola Atrix 4G dock that I bought for a cheap price, modified it a bit and works fine)
-Global use possible due with GSM
Cons:
-Screen's Pentile - nowhere near as clear as a non-pentile screen, e.g. HTC One X, it's not HD, and black levels aren't low enough at high screen brightness
-Camera's photos may be slightly washed out, definitely doesn't beat an iPhone 4S (as much as I hate to admit it)
-Limited ROM activity, like most Motorola phones (but there are good ones available)
-Accessories limited, as with all hardware keyboard phones (few choices in cases, etc.)
-Interface lags behind slightly at times, but very little
-Internals are outdated as of 2013, since quad-cores are the rage now
-Battery life won't last with heavy use
At present, the Droid 4 is close to the best you can get with a hardware keyboard, but don't expect the screen to astound you like the newer models' would. If you want a hardware keyboard and can wait, I'd suggest waiting for a successor, maybe a Droid 5.
Droid 5? Somehow I doubt that will ever come out. :-/

If you're mainly going to text, I can't see why it shouldn't last a day - as long as the screen brightness is kept low, and the Wi-fi off. You should try one out if you can first, to see if the screen's not a bother for you.

We agreed on a trade;
My razr hd for his droid 4 plus $100
We met and I felt the droid 4 was too bulky and not and style at all, so i said no
I don't know about the 100$ with it... just my opinion.. good thing you didn't get it...

How much is the Razr HD? You can get the D4 on ebay for $140 - 190, any day of the week.

JB was announced, but unlikely before summer imo. You got shafted my friend. People who are having problems, ie broken droid 4s are being given droid razr hds. I only use keyboards, thus only the droid line....put your phone in 3g and be happy. Batter life isn't bad per se, it is small however at 1785mah. Other than that, the phone is excellent. Screen is too bright for me, but that can be fixed.

I didnt do too bad though....I payed $199 at verizon...send a $50 rebate (so I only payed $149) and the guy gave me $50
so I essentially payed $100 for a sealed Droid 4
and im much happier as of right now
I do miss the HD screen and the big screen BUT i love the keyboard and to me its worth it
I miss read what you said... I thought you had to pay him the 100... I just sat mine on my stove... bye bye warranty... hello root...

NO NO haha ide never do such a thing
i went to verizon and got my upgrade to razr HD (payed $199)
then verizon has a rebate for $50 (so take of $50 from that and now I only payed $150 for razr HD)
then met guy from CL, he gave me $50 plus a new droid 4
so in all actuality I only spent $100 to get this phone (with contract)
and I just bought the droid bionic lapdock (i read reviews and all says it works, even with ICS)
Im excited for that to come in the mail in a few days!

well let me put it this way. i dont know if moto is gonna realease a D5, and im all for the fingerprint lock.. that is hot. but im going to buy a 2nd D4 and maybe even a 3rd to make sure i got a kickass qwerty to suit my needs. the d4 is great.. it's more like a computer with phone functionality than a phone.

Ya ive had it a few days and overall love it
I just bought a lapdock for it as well
The only issues I have with it are the lag it seems to have once in a while and the battery is pretty bad.
But besides that I have to say I love this phone
Now I think droid 5 is possible...moto recently released that keyboard phone for at&t or sprint photon q or atrix q or something like that
So we will find out soon enough
i would recommend trying to freeze unnecessary apps. and uninstalling the bloatware. sped mine right up to 400mb free memory. now i can run any number of my apps and the multitasking works great too on ics. even after a reboot. didnt want to run a custom rom so i sorta cleaned up the stock to suit my needs with the root script and link2sd.
JB is supposed to be released soon. within the next 8 weeks i think, so will be looking forward to that. and we'll know if a droid 5 is on the way by the end of february.
would love a 13/16mp camera, 2 or more gigs of ram droid 5 with the new flexible unbreakable screens. that would pwn.
