LTE Envelope Tracking Explained - Nexus 5 General

Some of you may have read that the Nexus 5 has a new radio feature called Envelope Tracking (ET). There are only 2 phones with this technology the first being the Note 3 and now the Nexus 5.
Highlights
-30% reduced heat output by phone
-20% reduction in radio power consumption
What is it and how?
The most promising technique among the new wave of RF innovations is envelope tracking (ET). This power supply technique replaces fixed dc supply voltage to the RF PA with a very high-bandwidth dynamic supply voltage, which closely tracks the amplitude of the transmitted RF signal. In place of a normal dc-dc converter, an ultra-high-bandwidth power modulator varies the supply voltage going to the PA to track the sample-by-sample variations in amplitude of the modulated carrier.
This significantly reduces the wasted power experienced in traditional fixed supply PAs, which are only energy efficient when they are in compression, at the peaks of the transmitted waveform. Fixed supply PAs lose up to 80% of energy (with OFDM signals) as heat since the supply voltage is far higher than required for most of the time. Tracking the RF signal closely with ET keeps the PA in compression over the whole modulation cycle, instead of just at the peaks as with the fixed supply PAs.

The LG G2 has this feature as well. All snapdragon 800 SoC's have this feature essentially.

G2 actually didn't have this implemented. QFE1101 is there..

I'd also like to know if this effects hspa at all. But since hspa is not ofdm, I assume no.

Slow 4g speed

I've tried the Charge and Thunderbolt along with the Revo, and for some reason the 4g on the Revo is less that half the speed of the other devices using the Speedtest app. Someone on another forum commented about this as well. Do you folks think this is a radio issue that can be fixed? Otherwise, I'll be taking the Revo back.
Thanks!
What is your dl speed because in all honesty any dl above 3 MB/sec is overkill. Here in SE TX mine avgs. 8 down/5 up. Try another server it does vary greatly. Remember it is a burst speed and is dependant on how many users are on a tower plus other factors beyond your control. A true OC-3 speed of 20 down /20 up runs about $20,000 a month for a business.
I'm always between 8 - 11 down and 4 - 6 up out here in Charleston, SC

Verizon probably has run their own fiber to their towers... and they are probably running OC-12 or 24 lines.
Hehehe... had to block the isp, as we are our own... That is shared with 1500 other users...

4G LTE in Milwaukee is VERY fast.
Near the airport, strong constant 20-30mbps and 4-9mbps up.
I have yet to venture to Madison yet or Wisconsin Dells, as those are the other two major city's in WI to have LTE setup.
on a side note, I will say with my first LG which was borked and stuck with the stock shipping software my downloads were some what slower then my new one with the current stock software. 15mbps max on the old software and 30mbps with the new software.

A little invention of mine

Hello guys
I was thinking about the battery temperature when charging, so i came upon a little invention of mine. I just wanna share some pictures.
When charging, my battery heats up to 45 to 50 celsius. But by using my invented battery cooler
It can reduce heating up to 25celsius
I took the fan of my ps2 and ac charger of a toy helicopter and modified some parts.
Fan: 9volts
Ac charger(modified): 9volts
Voltage input: 100~220volts
Here are some pics...

I think you mean input? But the idea is amazing .
Ok thanks about that haha.
I also got wrong spellings! Its hard to type in my keyboard.
A little add in my topic, you can also use your old fans from old power supplies from old pc's. Kekeke
Just look for any compatible ac charger or any adapter that can support the voltage of the fans.
Ill make a case after school to make it look more cooler!
This will greatly help the life of your battery.
Just remember, when soldering parts, make sure you dont get burnt.

Yeah, excessive temperature is one of the main reasons of batteries dying. So this might be pretty useful actually.
Nice innovation........
I already made a housing or case for it using my phones box. It does not look cool but it helps

It could be the best if you change the ac charger for an microusb plug and connect it to the phone, at same time that the battery charger.
2 in 1!!

Actually, the phones voltage is differet from the fan, and the adaptor's voltage is different too.
your device will be burnt or will cause voltage problems:
result: damaged device due too overvoltage.

Yup voltage differences can cause your galaxy ace to malfunction. I have experienced it before charging my phone overseas.

Do you know if it modifies kernel or interferes with setCPU?
I sent them a message about it, let's see what they say.
No it don't mess with kernel, I also don't think it adjust cpu frequency as I think it would need root permission, which this app don't require.
Sent from my HTC One X
yepp, I installed it, and looks like what it does is that it organises when apps connect for sync and update, which sounds really good, and others don't do that.
yep, they said:
Thank you for your enquiry.
BatteryGuru does not modify the kernel or CPU settings in and way.

802.11ac Certified - but not us?

Anyone see this yet:
http://goo.gl/iRzq2
I see a few members there: GS4 active, Galaxy Mega - but not us... yet.
Hopefully it's just a matter of resubmitting for the higher certification and not a physical (hardware) limitation.
Edit:
I know ac is basically a "shiny object" but ZDNet has a good rundown on what it means:

From another guy on xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39564915&postcount=15
To be honest 802.11ac in the first wave is going to be kind of pointless. In reality it is basically just 802.11n with wider channels. 802.11b ---> 802.11g are big changes. 802.11g ---> 802.11n are big changes. 802.11n ---> 802.11ac, not so much.
It doesn't say buy I am guessing it is going to be a 1x1:1 like the SIII. I would rather have a 2x2:2 802.11n that a 1x1 802.11ac
Here is how it works out.
SIII - 802.11n 1x1:1 at 40mhz = 150mbps
Nexus 10 - 802.11n 2x2:2 at 40mhz = 300mbps
S4 - 802.11n 1x1:1 at 80mhz=325mbps
the Nexus 10 has two antennas and radios compared to the SIII or S4. It should be able to hear and transmit better.
WiFi has a **** load of overhead so you normally get about half of your connection rate in real throughput. With that said I only get about 90mbps with iPerf when my Nexus 10 is connected at 300mbps. It is like the bus on the thing can't hang. Copying files from a server with ES file explorer is super slow.
I haven't played with an s4 but the bottleneck on the other devices isn't the wifi.

His numbers seem to pan out with what another guy claims on AndroidCentral:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...5-ghz-802-11ac-wifi-settings.html#post2815095
Thank you so much, that was the issue, I had the same name for both SSID's!
WOW is all I can say! I am now getting downloads on wifi of close to a 100 mps on 5 GHZ and only 45 to 50 on 2.4. Now I just have to reconfigure the router so I can print off of the 5 GHZ line, but that will be later.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch - Specs

So apparently, the Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch will have flexible display. I listed some specs from the source article. There is also a video of how it would look like based on the design patent filing by Samsung in Korea.
This thing is expected to be announced on September 4th.
Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Specs
Samsung Exynos 4212 dual core clocked at 1.5GHz with Mali-400 MP4 GPU
320 x 320 resolution Flexible OLED display
Camera (integrated into strap)
NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Accelerometer
Decent battery life
Android 4.3 (developer units had Android 4.1 or 4.2)
Source
Samsung might restrict it to just Samsung App Store, which would be a d*ck move.

Oh our little wrist warmer has come a long way...
Still loving mine, and enough to buy the Gear 2 as soon as I can. Not sure what all the bad reviews were about, especially those that came later after a few updates on things like Notifications. I was cleaning house and got a call from my son, and we talked for a long time with him saying the voice quality was great. I use the Pedometer every day with S Health to keep in shape now too.
