So, the past few days there has been quite a fuss on the internet about the latest “Pure Android” phone by Google, LG’s Nexus 5.
Well, is it? I’ll put it simpler; Are you sure that the Nexus devices are, indeed, pure Android?
By “pure Android”, we mean AOSP. And by AOSP we mean the Open Source Project that you can learn more from here.
It’s quite a read. But I’ll simplify it for you. If you download the Android SDK, inside you’ll find the Eclipse IDE, a tool targeted to Android developers. From inside the IDE, you can initialize an Android Virtual Device running truly pure Android.
So in our case, I fired up the AVD and booted to a stock 4.4 environment. Let’s observe closely the menu and compare it side by side with the one from Nexus 5.

See the differences? Oh look...
there is the AOSP browser which Google replaced with Chrome in their Nexus series.
Also you can find the Messaging app, which was replaced by Hangouts,
AOSP Calendar, was replaced by Google’s Calendar,
Music which was replaced by Google Play Music,
Google Search, replaced the Search, and
…last but not least, the Gallery. The gallery app in Nexus is miles, nay tens of miles away from the Gallery app in AOSP Android.
Also, bundled with Nexus 5 you’ll find;
Google Earth
Google Maps
Google+
Google Drive
Google Play Movies/Books/Magazines
Wallet
QuickOffice
YouTube
Also, introduced with the 4.4 version there is also a brand new and different launcher called Google Search launcher which is always “OK Google”-hearing you.
AOSP 4.4 launcher vs. Nexus 5 Google Search launcher
Starting to get the hint? It’s close to, but nowhere near at, the bundled software the other manufacturers are putting into their phones. Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony you-name-them. All of them provide custom Android experiences, with almost the same way.
The too bundle custom launchers (which off course are not similar to the classic Android Launcher), custom SMS app, custom Music App, Social-Networking apps, Custom Camera/Gallery etc.
Just do a quick search online (and then some). You’ll find hundreds articles referring to the Nexus devices as “Pure Android experience”.
The correct term is that they [the Nexus devices] are “Pure Google experience” and in my humble opinion there should an option to be able to use the stock apps, like Browser and Music which are way more resource-friendly compared to their Google equivalents.
is it possible for you to pull the browser apk from true aosp? It would be my guess that it would be far better in performance over chrome.
Google is taking back Android!
Good for them....
The pure Google experience then. That's what I'm after. Love 4.4 so far.
Seriously ?

What you have there is an emulator, which doesn't include Google's proprietary apps. Not everything that comes on a nexus phone is opensourced. It's always been this way.
Thing is if you bought any other phone you would get all that plus all their crap as well, like it or not all that Google stuff is now core apps.
Pure Google experience is good enough for me. Only wish they do something about the Camera viewfinder fiasco(16:9 view finder for a 4:3 Camera), either give us a 16:9 Camera or a 4:3 view finder.
You forget that Google started the whole Android thing and they are the co founders of AOSP.
Nexus series allows you installing custom system-apps or even roms from the official AOSP builds without any problems or "hacking/jailbreaking".
Google has started this whole "gapps" thing a long time ago and it is normal, they also want to do their business and sell their services. It is free to you to use them.
IMO still the best Android option so far.
I love my galaxy nexus (coming from a HD2 with ICS) and the freedom I have with and tomorrow my N5 will arrive
Google has had a proprietary branch of Android for as long as I can remember, this is nothing new with the Nexus 5. I can remember building AOSP for the Nexus S and noticing very similar differences you mention here including missing dictionary, etc... Developers have even mentioned submitting patches to AOSP only to have them refused by Google because they had already been applied on the in-house branch
Android has also always had proprietary drivers and other various bits, so there was never a pure "open" Android experience. Many long running 'open' platforms also have closed or proprietary bits
Could you possibly pull the stock MMS.apk and odex for me? I HATE hangouts.

Can't argue with that... Off course is the best Android option so far.
I am well aware about the proprietary Google Apps... I don't argue with you. I am just commenting on MANY articles/blog posts/reviews online that declare the Nexus series as pure android... Which in my opinion is "pretty close"... but not "pure".
NSS comes to mind.
Android is a commercial product.
AOSP isn't.
Why do you think rom developers have to jump through so many hoops sometimes when they release a custom rom.
So I guess only a phone can be called a pure Android experience is to release with nothing installed, with an instruction on how to download and flash AOSP?
Not to forget, there is no Play Store in the "pure Android" experience without google and IMO the Play store is a main point for something i call Android experience.
...this thread exists? Anyone here knows Google includes proprietary apps as a part of a Nexus device.
Did you know the modems aren't open source? Did you know GOOGLE NOW KNOWS A LOT ABOUT YOU!!!1!??!!1!
Real talk, though, I'm going to install the standard messaging app. Hangouts blows for SMS.

This is how it should be ! Look at what apple did with the notification bar they took it right out of android because of open source. And you can install the original browser with root.

I think the point is that the Nexus program is a pure Google experience not a pure Android experience and it seems that many of you are happy with that.
For now that is pretty good because most of the Google apps add value over the stock Android apps (although so far I do prefer the stock browser) but how will you feel if ads start popping up in the Gmail app or the phone app when you search for a contact, etc. I hope I am wrong but I really am afraid we are getting close to that.
Also when the carriers bundle apps we did not ask for and cannot remove without rooting we call it bloatware. So why isn't Google Earth, Google Maps, Google+, Google Drive, Google Play Movies/Books/Magazines, Wallet, QuickOffice and YouTube bloatware?
I enjoy the Google experience but I went with the Nexus program becasue I wanted freedom to do what I please with the device I purchased. I also want the availability/unavailability of an OS upgrade to be a technical decision not a marketing decision. The N5/Nexus program still gives me that but now that Android is dominant Google is doing what it can to take it back; and with each OS release Google edges a little closer to looking like the carriers.

I will when I get home. You might want to just get TextSecure or 8sms from the Play Store - they're both AOSP-based with some tweaks (TS is all about encrypting your local texts, 8sms is a mix of AOSP-standard, CM specials and extras).

Wow, they finally got around to basic functionalities after three years. Functionalities that Symbian and WinMo were doing since forever. Very revolutionary and magical. Color me awed.
Just about the only thing Android needs to do to "catch up" is a better multi-tasking UI. Then again, considering the iPhone OS 4.0 will handle a grand total of seven tasks--as opposed to Android showing the last six apps used--well...

Nope, you're not. However for the masses, this update will be very well received. Yes its ridiculous that they took so long to incorporate multitasking and folder functionality, but better late than never.
I was disappointed that there wasn't any interface change, the icon grids seem archaic. The iBook app will be huge. Overall, I think this is what most people were expecting in terms of a software update. The real big news will be whether a hardware update will accompany OS4 (unibody iPhone would be nice).
For now the Nexus still has an edge but the gap is narrowing

Yeah. I was thinking of the big things they could do on the hardware side, but I'm not entirely sure they want to split their market up. People are still using the iPhone 3G, if they do a massive upgrade on hardware, app developers will have to verify it works on 3 different platforms.
Maybe they are just planning on phasing out the 3G completely by next year (considering they were hinting at the lesser features for 3G's OS4), and then using the current 3GS as minimum spec. If they increase screen resolution, they'll have to write some scaling processes as well (a lot can be seen in the iPad)
They dropped the bomb until they put this dud out.
I own a bunch of Apple devices and Ive had an iPhone before. Im not a hater, I just dont think it's cutting edge anymore. I even have an iPad so you can't say Im an apple hater
Is just another iPhone... but still Google needs to get their act together in a few areas. I borrowed a N1 for few days and like it very much, but I have been reluctant to take the plunge because of the following shortcomings:
Google needs to allow Contacts, Tasks and Notes to sync to the N1 (locally and remotely) using Google apps. It also needs to either enhance the Calendar application or make it play nice with Outlook desktop calendar functions. Me and whole bunch of other people I know, are very comfortable with Outlook to manage their email, time, contacts and tasks. Help us migrate to Android and to the Google apps without so much fuzz. Don't leave it to third parties. I don't want to risk my critical data to a vendor that is here today, but might not be here tomorrow. I'm not very happy leaving all my critical data in the cloud, but if I'm going to do it... Google needs to help me get there. Security and the integrity of my data are important. I have confidence in Google, but not on third party vendors for this critical step.
The Music Player needs enhancement and a Google desktop application to manage one's Music Library and multiple playlist is needed. Most decent portable DAP have such application. Maybe Google can partner or acquire a vendor that knows how to do this right.
Just like the new iPhone the inbox of Android needs to be bit more friendly with other email service providers. As with the new IPhone OS 4, multiple Exchange servers should be supported along with the option to have multiple and merged inboxes.
I wonder if others feel the same way. I also know that there are other issues that need to be addressed, but in my case the top two are very important.
The soul purpose of this device is not meant to be a music player, Google does not (and I highly doubt they will) need to create an entire desktop application to move mp3s to the music folder where anyone with the right direction can do this. Managing playlist though is a different story, but I guess it is up to a third party application to do this.
Get a ipod or other portable music device if this is your wish.
Also, tamanaco, I believe Sense does most of what you said. Don't believe the Nexus is a very friendly business device...

I agree with you in that there's no need for them to boost their specs at this point, but I was referring more to a cosmetic facelift. The iPhone has pretty much looked the same for 3 years now and I think even Apple fanboys can agree that everyone is tired of the design.

So, if I understand you correctly... The N1 is "not" a Music Player... is "not" meant for business... and as you say is "not" for me. So, in your book it's only good to make calls and find yourself on a map? It's called a "Superphone"... What's else is it good for?

This is not an excuse IMO, the music player definitely needs an update. This is the one area where iPhone has a real advantage over Android. Most users would rather carry one device for everyday use, I know I certainly would.
Sooooo, there has been a lot of *****ing about the user profiles and how a new profile has to download and pay for apps you already own. I agree that it is stupid. Google should have done it differently and they still might. I decided to see how it worked and to see if there was a way to make the apps you already have downloaded visible to another user. After tinkering around for awhile I have found a way to do this.
EDIT: jeepguy04 has made an app that makes this super simple. The link to the app can be found on his thread HERE.
This DOES NOT work if you have restored your apps with titanium backup. I believe it has to do with where TiBu places the data on the sdcard.
Not all scenarios have been tried so your help testing and diagnosing would be appreciated.
Requirements:
- at least a half functioning brain (the more the better)
- a basic understanding of the Engrish language
- a cool beverage for those in warm climates or a warm beverage for those in cool climates
- you must be rooted
- you must have a root file explorer ( ES, Root Explorere, etc) or know how to push and pull files via adb though im not going to go over this method
Step 1:
Create a new user.
Step 2:
Use your root file explorer to navigate to /data/system/users/
This folder contains folders numbered 0 and XX. 0 is the folder for your main profile. XX (it is probably 10) is your second profile.
Step 3:
Open folder XX.
The file we are interested in is called package-restrictions.xml.
Step 4:
Open the package-restrictions.xml for editing.
When you open this up you see a long list strings like this:
stopped=”true” nl=”true” />
These correspond to the packages you have installed on your main profile. The one above obviously is for SketchBook Pro.
If i wanted this to be available on my second user I would simply delete the whole line from this file.
Step 5:
Reboot, log in to the second profile, profit.
Once you reboot you should see the app in the second profile. In my experience the app does not use the data from the main profile so your game scores etc are safe.
Let me know if this works for you.
I just searched a way for sharing an installed app to my kids profile without google account and found the /data/system/users/##/package-restictions.xml file, too. I noticed if an app is installed in the profile, then there is no entry for this app in this file.
So simply deleting the whole line, e.g.
<pkg name="com.rovio.angrybirds" inst="false" />
and rebooting works. The app is now installed

Glad it worked for you. I will have to try it again as it didnt work when I did it the first time.
I suspect that you could disable the play store by setting <pkg name="com.android.vending" enabled="1"> to <pkg name="com.android.vending" inst="false ">
This could easily be incorporated into a ROM by one of our talented developers. If I had any idea how i would give it a try.

In my case I don't plan on allowing an Google account to be added to the second user. The way I see it is if its already on my device its ok. Just like other profiles on my computer can access my music and some applications. I think its more a matter of morality that legality. I don't think you would ever be busted for it.

Well, Google has no problem with us tagging our account to a new user account to obtain apps so I don't see any problem with having the apps there without the tagged account.
As said, this is our device. It should be our choice which of our paid apps another user has access to on our own device.
I'd say that Google just hasn't thought it out too good.

I think Google thought it out very well, and the provided implementation works great for the device owners.
I really can't think of any other implementation that would work out as well for my daughter and me sharing one device.
Is the goal to avoid the cost of a 2nd copy of the app, or avoiding the need for a second account? Or for some reason I'm missing?

Nexus 7
Clean ROM 3.0 - Leankernel 0.8.x
Certainly the goal for me was to provide a limited subset of my total apps to my daughter, and to keep her GMail / Facebook / etc accounts
separate from mine. I hated her logging me out every time she used my tablet...
When I heard about multiple profiles in 4.2, I about shat a brick. "How cool! I don't share my Nexus 7 with my family members, but I could totally set up my tablet to have different types of interfaces for different situations! I could have one profile dedicated to operation within my car in landscape mode, and another profile for general use... hell, I could have a profile that creates a 'faux PC UI' so I can get some work done in KingSoft!"
Nope. No app sharing. I can't help but feel that Google tacked this on as a last-minute thing--in fact, the whole of 4.2 feels very "last minute" since all they really added was **** that you could already get baked into other really popular ROMs like notification bar widgets. And even then, they only functioned as links to my settings (or, since I'm on the wonderfully buggy 4.2, the bluetooth button functioned as an annoyance that reminded me to restart my device if I wanted to turn bluetooth off). I've been pretty disappointed with Google lately: the Nexus Q went nowhere fast, the Nexus 4 launch was abysmal, 4.2 had some awful bugs and it detracted from the smoothness of the 4.1, and even 4.2.1 has its share of bugs.
Well, thanks to this thread, I can at least get more out of my N7 in my car and in other situations that require me to have the tablet UI function slightly differently.
It would be quite easy to whip up an app that notified the user an app was installed and to make those modifications to the xml file (for rooted devices).
Is that something people would be interested in?
e.g. Install app, once installed, a notification window shows asking if you would like this app to be enabled for all users.
Let me know, I could prob do this tonight (or on the weekend if I run out of time).

An app would be great. I think most people don't like digging through the files on their device for fear of messing something up.
I think it would be better if the user had to initialize the app instead of it being automatic. A list of installed apps like in the drawer groups part of nova launcher (see screenshot) that you could check or un-check if you wanted them available to the other users would be nice. It's up to you though. I'm glad you are interested in though. I think many will benefit from this.

Cool, I'll look into it tonight or this weekend if the kids are keeping me busy.
Awesome idea.

Some of you have been following this for a very long time, you have seen the changes and many alterations I have gone through. But now, Android on the desktop has reach a very serious status about itself and it is turning into a powerhouse beast of an OS.
Let me start by saying that Android Desktop does have an official name, we just have not released it yet, so for now, we are sticking to Android Desktop OS.
I am going to be short and clean about what is going on. What we are doing with Android is nothing short of damn amazing, we have turned Android into a 64 / 32 bit, Intel and AMD powered, rebuilding from the ground up, new feature rich, all app redesigned, new kernel, synced platformed environment, with a lot of new things which will be added in the future.
Me and the lead developer have been working and mapping every corner of this out for well over a year, every small detail, every brand new thing we must add to Android, adding all new systems and mechanisms to bring out the full power of a desktop.
I must state this as strongly as possible, this is not a patch, not a port or any bad attempt by the likes of which others have done. This is the real deal, real power, real love and thought put into this OS. Totally rebuilt in a way no one has thought of yet. Every default app has been redesigned for the desktop, all UI, all screens, notifications, settings and everything are beautifully redesigned to burn your cornea when you see it.
The kernel is a powerhouse. This will do partitions, read HDDs, SSDs and other drives properly, newly implemented mouse and keyboard systems and just so so so much more that we have planned for this, things I can't even talk about.
I just can't wait to have you see what is coming, this is about to change so much in the tech world. I repeat, this IS the real deal.
I will leave you with some teasers of what is going on, just to pique your interest as well as I can, also keep in mind there are a lot of things not show for particular reasons.
And last but not least, we are always keeping an eye out for serious developers who are interested in building the future.

lol it has been a long day so I cant tell if it is sarcasm or not xD
But, I never offered to send it, not sure how, and they probably wouldnt even look at it honestly, unless someone can show me other wise.
I would love to have it as an full fledged Desktop OS, I would ditch Win 8, even though I like it.
I tried to fix the youtube video, proper tags and all, but it keeps messing up, no idea what to do.
And there is operating system called linux..maybe its just like distro..

Sarcasm? No. Why You thought that? You're wrong.
Maybe you can a build theme system for Windows 7 /8 or for Linux?
Easier way at all.
I want to see design like yours in my desktop.
Do not put Web address in normal URL options on post, in the editor of post, must be a option to put dedicated YOUTUBE URL. (I don't remember how exactly it is, I am far from computer)
stupid google, use this, android with this look for desktopnis better than chrome os, + you could use all apps from market, buy them, better than no apps in chrome os, i would love a skin like this for windows, or an android desktop system, mobile browsers are better than windows browser

I apologize then
If I knew how to theme, I would, but I am definitely offering someone to do this for Linux or anything else. I wish I could do more with it, but all I can do is photoshop pictures together.
I am messaging those that work at google on GooglePlus, lets see how this works.
Very impressive all the best for your hard work. Liked it and hope others will like it as well.

Yeah thats what I dont understand, android is beaming left and right, has alot of potential and they do a Chrome os
As I said, if I knew how to write code, I would blend a Linux and Android x86 type together, allow some Windows files to be used, well mainly games and what not, but still.
I wish someone here on XDA could pull a group together and start this, I would lead the art idea side.
Am I allowed to bump this?
Willing to start
first off, sorry to bump the thread :/. So as far as i know the apps on a android phone work on a java platform, so technically you could take the android tablet OS and convert it (i know that's not easy) to desktop, and kick win 8 ass. However its java, its process intensive and not the most fun.

They are working on that AIO pc thing with the new haswell chips. Which I am hoping isnt the mobile chip, instead the desktop chip. But I think that stands at like 10% and there was a rumor that (not acer) but there would be Android laptops sometime this year, you will just have to google that one, but if so, it could mean that Android will get off of arm chips or whatever it is on.
Edit: Nvm here is the google link for android laptops.

If anyone would like to start up this project email me. [email protected] I would really like to see this beautiful idea come to life. I think if we look at android 86 and fork there os.

That's what most technology companies do... They're both worth the same to make and they more-than likely stopped manufacturing the old version so you end up with the upgrade. It's like a gift for getting something that should have been good from the start. It's good business. Happened to me with my computers watercooler from Corsair. Pump died, got the new model.
Nice! Sucks being this guy now though. I posted the link to this thread in his thread, so he can shed some tears I'm a massive c***.

It didn't come with an OEM box and all the goodies that come with a new phone, was just the standard vacuum wrap refurb phone. But it doesn't bother her. She likes having the new phone. And it's a great business practice if you ask me.

If the Tizen update were to come out today for the Gear 1, would you stay or switch the Tizen.
Keep in mind the Trade-offs
Android:
Pros:
Android Ecosystem (100s thousand apps)
Custom ROM
Highly Moddable
Cons:
3 day instead of 4 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
(currently) no Gear Specific Android SDK
few Gear Specific apps
Tizen
Pros:
4 day instead of 3 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
SDK Available
Possibility of more future Tizen specific apps
sports functions like hiking, cycling, etc
future upgrade path
Cons:
Few Developers with experience in Tizen
Questionable interest in Tizen ecosystem -- with announcement of Google Wear
No mods
No roms
No Android app access
I would switch, as most of the Android apps are not meant for Gear 1, so this Pro is not really valid. I believe many more Gear 2 apps will come in Tizen, and the underlying OS does not matter to me.
That pro depends on your needs.
With android you can do:
Internet tethering
File manager
Google maps
Google now
Tasker
Audio recorder
Full Facebook
Google Voice dictation
Really depends on your expectations.
The more you expect to do, the more of a plus it is.
But if you just want a stock experience then it's less of a plus.
But I really wonder if Tizen will take off with the developers knowing a universal platform, the Google Wear is right around the corner.

Only partially. I could not get the Google apps to go online, only the Google Search. Other apps requiring direct net connection did not work for me either. I have been back on Stock for some time now due to this limitation from AT&T.
Here, you need to install the Xposed Hack Connectivity service APK needed to spoof the network connectivity. This makes apps think there is a standard wifi network connection even when there is not.
Lots of people forget or miss this step and have the exact same problem you have.
Probably just get the file off here, no need to read the page contents, just download.

Time will tell, but still, I don't want Tizen.
in some cases not even the xposed hack will work as i found out when using easy tether - it turns out google services need https connectivity so the free version of easy tether + xposed did not solve the problem. By upgrading to the pro version of easy tether i was able to start using these services. By the way love how google translate works - very convenient in a watch

What is a proper smart watch app?
App with big buttons?
App that requires the phone as a "provider" of data?
App that the manufacturer deems as "official"?
I think I would switch to tizen only if the battery life is really really better than with the current rom...
If it was 1 week that would be awesome. Lol
Well it kind of would be longer since you won't be using it as much due to lack of tizen apps, so you'd have a long stand by time. But actual usage time would be the only slightly longer.

Sounds like a lot of people are wanting to switch back to Android.
I think switching to Tizen now is too much of a risk to take especially with Android Wear right around the corner. Why lose the ability to control your device and be at the mercy of Samsung by switching to Tizen and be stuck with it forever?
The only thing I like about tizen was the standalone music player. Is there a way to do that with null rom?
