Hi. I'm trying to find some guidance on rooting the i9305 on Linux (ubuntu). I'm really sorry if this is a repeat post, but I have honestly searched to the best of my abilities (which I'll be the first to admit are not vast). I really appreciate any help, and I'm quite stumped ya know!
I've looked around the forum, done many-a-Google searche, but still feel I don't have a clear enough picture on how to get this done. I'm a new linux user & never rooted a i9305 before, but am very comfortable with rooting via odin on the i9300.
All I really know is that I need to use heimdall and am sure of the commands needed (as long as they don't deviate much from the ons for the i9300 ones posted in some tutorials on heimdall; not including file name/locations variables).
However, I'm not sure about the recovery image. Can I use the standard CWM image I'll find in any odin tutorial, or must it be specific to linux/heimdall? Is the OSx image usable.
Thanks!
Why don't you use framaroot? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
It's real simple to use. Just install the app directly on your phone.
Then i would install SuperSU and Mobile Odin after that.
When that is done i would search for TWRP recovery.tar for i9305 and flash with Mobile Odin.
Hi, thanks, will give it a try. Cheers for advice. :good:

Since you're running Ubuntu it is a bit easier:
sudo apt-get install heimdall
# ensure phone connected by USB and in download mode
sudo heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.5-i9305.img --no-reboot

I'm not certain about this but believe they are not specific to the OS running heimdall. See the cyanogenmod wiki for more info (sorry cannot post link yet. Wiki page is Install_CM_for_i9305). I am experimenting with the Cyanogenmod 11 unofficial build and there was a link in the thread to a pre-release version of CWM which was recommended.

Guys, this is the bootloader from KB1 that Chainfire removed from the package to ensure that no bad things (signed bootloader) happened. I requested him to send it to me last night to test, and sure enough, this FIXES Heimdall compatibility with the Mac. It also is NOT a signed bootloader, so no worries about that breaking. Flash with ODIN.

OP, update your Title that this is only for fixing Heimdall compatibility issues only. So that we don't have end users trying to flash this without considering anything.
Sometimes, I've noticed that end users just flash away thinking they're already in the know. And that's when we get lots... and i mean LOTS of complaints and whines.
Also put a bold statement on "FIXES Heimdall compatibility FOR MAC USERS"

If you have a Windows machine (which I know, may not be the case), you can use Heimdall to flash this. You *may* have to do it twice (for some reason, Heimdall seems to fail the immediate first time you use it. Or at least it did for me.) to get it to take.
Questions...
1. Flashing this with Odin (so I can later use Heimdall) I check the Phone Bootloader Update... but do I need to check anything else?
2. I load the file in the "Phone" section, correct?
3. Will this run with non KB1 based ROM's (i.e. Bionix-V 1.2)?
Thank you

1. This is all.
2. As is you cannot flash this with coding. It needs to be in a tar from what I know of. I flashed it using heimdall on windows.
3. Yes. This is in fact from kb1.
So did you flash this in the second bootloader spot in heimdall with no other files? no need for a tar or a pit?
Ok good folks of xda, I've had my Note now for about a month. i previously had a Nexus S and a SGS2 but never had the nerve to root those phones. But seeing the capability those rooted SGN's out there have I'm trying to bite the proverbial bullet on this matter. I especially liked Rocket ROM and CM9 ICS MOD.
First off, I'm on a German-manufactured SGN running on KL7 Firmware. Second, I have a Macbook Pro. Ive read quite a few posts in regards to rooting KL7 but those were under "PC" conditions.
If anybody can please grace my question with their insurmountable knowledge on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it.
Hey, I am a mac user like you and I rooted my phone using a virtual machine (Windows 7) in parallels. Follow Dr.Ketan's post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360. It shows what file you need to download for your RAM.
Another option is to use Mobile Odin Pro. With this you don't need a computer. Just download the ROM which you want and choose the CODE tar file from Mobile Odin Pro. Select the ever root option (CWM and SU) if you want. You are set.
OK but dont you need root access in order to use mobile Odin root? Any other options will be greatly appreciated.

Actually he mentioned to follow Dr. Ketan's post, which is immensely helpful. But here is the concise version as many people hate to plough through the loads of information that they can't make sense of on XDA. But hopefully as you move along you do appreciate what's out there and not just hope to get answers by just labeling yourself as a noob. No offense intended as I understand everyone has to start off somewhere and it's great if someone would be kind enough to lend a helping hand.
So here you go:
You can get a version of ODIN that's supposedly able to run on a mac here. http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6629819/Odin_[Samsung]_for_Mac
1) Download this file and flash normally with ODIN http://www.hotfile.com/dl/136656907/6ff47c0/N7000XXKKA_N7000OXXKK5_ATO.zip.html this is a KKA file which might be sort of a downgrade, you might say, but its necessary as Samsung has already patched the loophole that allows for the exploitation to obtain root access.
2) Unzip this file and you will get a folder with the same name.
3) With USB debugging enabled and Unknown Sources enabled, connect your phone to the computer normally (ie not download or recovery mode)
4) Open the folder and then execute the 'not-rooted-yet' file.
5) Follow the instructions above and you will have a rooted phone.
You will want to download Mobile Odin which is good stuff and can be found on the market, or you can google to get the apk for umm... free.
As to how to flash new firmware using Mobile Odin so as to retain your root... I leave it to you to figure that out as it's really easy and just takes some reading. Nonetheless, do PM me if you require further help.
Cheers!
Hey guys....I'm not new to xda but I am new to this section. I've owned a tab for about a year now and finally interested in rooting. I have a tmobile samsung galaxy tab.....so what do I need to do....i see its very ready to brick...so what do I need to do

It is not easy to brick, unless you screw up the boot loader.
Suggestion: why not go the popular way, just flash custom ROM that has root.
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Then flash overcome kernel.
Then flash overcome ROM
But please make sure you get good download. Many people have to download a few times to get it right.
Use a tool for checking sha1sum to compare.
For example:
http://download.cnet.com/MD5-SHA-1-Checksum-Utility/3000-2092_4-10911445.html

yeah. I think somehow in the galaxy tab, you can't just flash a recovery like in HTC devices.
You have to at least flash a kernel+recovery.
I didn't recommend the most basic CF-root method because I am not sure if CF-root method predates your ROM.
So the safest is to go the most popular method of using Overcome stock safe + overcome kernel + overcome ROM method.
It is a good, well detailed process with almost zero failure.
And a good stepping board to try other ROM after you get it running.
From there you can go to CM9 or AOKP ICS easily.
You will notice all of them recommend to re-stock using Overcome method as well.
That's where I'm headed for the tab...ics cm9. I have to make sure I know what I'm doing first with my tab
Sent from my SGH-T849 using Tapatalk
Just make sure to copy everything that you have on your tab in the internal SD card, as by following the overcome guide, you will lose everything that lies in the internal SD card. There are two things you should do in order.
1. Go to contacts, go to menu, import/export and select export. It will create a .vcf file as a backup for your contacts in your SD card. Attach Tab to PC and copy the VCF file to the PC.
2. Copy the whole internal SD card contents to a safe place on your HD, just in case you have something important in there, like pictures, or videos, or some other documents etc.

Need help with rooting without USB and without CWM
Hello,
I have a half-bricked chinese 7in tablet similar to GT-P1000 (the "About" screen shows the model is MID7, but the boot logo/animation is Samsung).
The tablet does not have USB access to PC (I think it's a hardware problem, not a matter of drivers), no CWM recovery (just the stock recovery) and it is runing on Android 2.3.5. No access to Market anymore because the locale is China. I cannot modify the "...etc/hosts" file or any other system file because I am not permitted (no root).
I tried to root it with z4root and gingerbreak (from the tablet) but no luck. However, I got the superuser and busybox installed. But when I type su in the terminal emulator it says i do not have permission (or something similar). Thus, no root. I could not try zergrush or any other rooting methods because I cannot connect to a PC via USB.
The only positive thing I can do is transfer files on it via WiFi using Airdroid. I also have a terminal emulator installed on it and ESfile manager.
Is there any way to root it via WiFi, or at least to install CWM recovery via WiFi or from the tablet (and then root the tablet), without using USB?
The stock recovery does not look for zip files, but for something upgrading package, which I do not know what format needs to be. I tried zip files and it didn't find them. It seems it looks for a folder, not a file, because it does not "see" files when I select that upgrade option from the recovery.
Right now i am willing to take the chance of trying any approach/software/rom that would give me a chance to un-brick the tablet step-by-step. Then, the first priority would be to re-gain access to the Market (Google Play).
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have.
Mid7 isn't similar in any way to this tab.
So this is hardly the forum for your device.

Hi
I have a non branded GT-P1000 Tab. Trying to follow instructions at http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-tab-gt-p1000-android-4-0-4-ics-aokp-rom-97483/ to install AKOP.40 ROM
Need Clockworkmod installed.
Installed Rom Manager then attempted to install Clockworkmod - It asks me to choose my phone type. Closest options are: Galaxy Tab - ATT, Samsung Galaxy Tab - T-Mobile, Samsung galaxy tab - VZW.
What do I install, or is there another version of Clockworkmod for non Branded TAB somewhere?
Thanks ColinK
From Manager is not compatible with P1000
You may brick your device if you force install cwm recovery of different device.
The only method is to flash via Odin, a kernel that contains cwm recovery.
overcome kernel is one of them.
In fact it was recommended in all ICS rom install guide you find here.

Forget about reference to AOKP build 38, that was back then.

Hi
Thanks for your prompt reply. The instructions for flashing overcome seems to have multiple steps and "IF's", with multiple opportunities to go wrong.
The android authority guide seems straightforward, and I have gone through some of it - except the guide makes no mention of how to get CWM.
Is there a simple way to get the right version of CWM installed, or something else that will do the same steps / functions.
If not, were exactly does the install part start and do I also have to install Odin?
Sorry for so many questions / uncertainty.
ColinK
As I said before.
No, there is only ONE way to get CWM recovery for P1000.
That is to flash a kernel that has CWM Recovery.
Either cf-root kernel or Overcome Kernel or Redpill kernel.
It is dead simple.
Download the tar file
Connect to Odin.
Flash.
Now, lets start by telling us what you have. P1000 running Froyo?
Rooted?
BTW, if you follow the complete Overcome guide, 99.999% you won't go wrong, if you follow every steps.
So read it 10 times if not sure.
The GB-Stock-Safe package mentioned in Overcome and available on their site, it contains the correct version of Odin (1.7) and the USB driver for Samsung.
32 bit and 64 bit driver for Windows.
Absolutely nothing else extra is needed. All there.

Actually you can flash a CWM.zip update without installing a kernel after you root your device.
But again, installing kernel with CWM included just like Priyana said would be a lot easier and simpler.

ColinK
Hi ColinK,
Unfortunately there is no straight way to install AOKP.
I am afraid you have to follow the guide to the letter, sort of.
This is why.
Some froyo from for our tab has locked bootloader.
So if you are on froyo there is a small chance you had a locked one.
You need to root your tab then run an app to check and to patch.
(I forgot by now whether you need root to check... to patch definitely yes)
Now, that is why Overcome guide said if froyo you need to root.
It is not strickly necessary.
Now, let's assume you don't have locked bootloader.
You only need to use Odin and flash GB stock safe v5 (which is actually Gingerbread Samsung version JQ1 Italian rom)
So, you need Odin.
Unpack the gb stock safe and you find Odin and USB driver.
Install USB driver first, then plug in your tab and your PC will detect the new device.
Unplug your device.
Install Odin.
Launch Odin, put your device to download mode and plug your device in to PC.
I am not a big user of Odin. I use heimdall in Linux which is simple and just work, so my memory is sketchy.
Odin will detect your device. There will be messages on screen.
Line up the files according to the guide and flash.
If no error your tab rebooted and you have GB ROM.
that of course isn't the end because you need cwm.
So continue with the guide.
It asks you to use Odin to flash overcome kernel tar.
Do it and you will end up having cwm recovery.
That is the end of guide.
You don't need to flash overcome rom.
Just follow my other thread reply to get AOKP.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
Addition info: The easiest way to check if you are rooted or not:
Download and install 'root check' or 'got root?' from google play store.
If the rooting failed, you can try the doomslords rooting script. It was my favorite root script up to GB2.3.3
Once you succesfully rooted, continue download the bootloader patch for froyo.
I have been on AOKP for so long, all this rooting, bootloader and all are a blur now.

I recommend first upgrading to 2.3.3, then flashing chainfire's modded cwm via odin:
http://www.4shared.com/zip/vsN8JA6x/CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v33-CW.html
and then flashing overcome via cwm:
http://www.ravishare.com/1fragzl971e6/Overcome_7_Series_v4.1.0_NoWipe.zip.html
then you can flash any aokp or cyanogenmod mtd build.
Upgraded to ICS and thanks
Ok so thanks to all who helped out with links to roms and guides.
I now have a lovely Galaxy Tab with ICS from AOKP.
And for anyone who would like to try but hasn't yet it really is surprisingly easy, just take your time and make sure to do it right, you won't regret the upgrade to ICS
I stood on the shoulders of giants to do this :good:.
So you use the method I posted or what Gogol posted?

It would be easier to find the zImage of a kernel and installing it using heimdall(semaphore also contains the tar files). Search up semaphore kernel and download the respective version that is compatible with your android version choice. I know there are 's' versions but download the non 's' version for now. There are tar files there so you can flash with odin. but if you want to use heimdall, one of the zips(or tar files) contain the zImage file and extract it into the folder where you have extracted heimdall(well if you don't have heimdall, google it and download it.) If you don't know how to use heimdall, look at tutorials such as from cyanogenmod or on xda forums.
Hope this helps, gsstudios
