Guys, this is a $350 phone. UNLOCKED! - Nexus 5 General

I don't start many opinion threads and I've been on this site a very long time.
However, I've been seeing lot of threads come up for the NEXUS 5, regarding it's QC, and maybe questionable components. So I'll chime in and offer some of my views, for what they're worth and you can go ahead do the same.
In this day and age, a $350 smartphone (Unlocked and with no contract) is a bargain, ESPECIALLY one as capable of the Nexus 5. You guys CANNOT forget that.
This is a device that can easily handle some of the devices costing twice as much. it's a powerhouse with very up to date specs for a price that is very low.
You're getting the latest in processing power as well as graphics. You're getting an excellent screen that's large, VERY bright, very sharp with accurate color reproduction. Yes your contrast might not be as ridiculous as the OLED screens but they both have ups and downs. but come on, you forget all the negatives when you think it's a $350 device. I do atleast.
Me personally, battery life is good for me, but if it's not for you, well again, it's good, not excellent. But if you got this battery life with a $700 device, you'd be upset but at $350...........how upsent can you possible be? not to mention it's one of the very few wireless charging devices with VERY fast charge times.
Camera is Good, not a ground breaker but trust me....it's much better than other sub $350 retail phones. Compared to them, it's a gold mine of a camera.
Not to mention the software...it has the latest and during it's cycle will always be the first to have the latest.
wait....did I mention it's a $350 phone? Think about alll the feature it has at $350....... then see if you complain about the little "button rattle" you have.... which you only discovered because someone else did...... come on now..
It's one helluva a device, and if you take price into account....GOD DAMN, It's a bargain of the decade (Till the next nexus ).
your thoughts?

It's a bargain no doubt. If you don't mind the cut corners in battery, speakers and camera and value latest software very highly then it's the right device for you.

Of course, that's why it's a $350 phone, not a $650 phone
But given the choice of nexus 5 at $350 and a Galaxy s4 at $600.................I just couldn't justify the extra $250 for the GS4...that's me. ..... and I own both lol.

I still think it is pretty crazy what they managed to pack into a $350 phone.
I just think these people are whingers. If they weren't whinging about this, they would have something else to whinge about.

I'm not one to complain. I've just sold my HTC One and bought this. But in the UK and a lot of other countries we are paying $560 for this phone.

It's a great bargain no doubt, it's just that discovering hidden flaws in a product is never pleasant, regardless of the price.
Also they try to make it pass for a no-compromise product, which inevitably sets people up for disappointment. If they just came out and said "hey, this is just a decent phone, not perfect, but the price is amazing guys" then it would be different, expectations would be different I think.
They're the one inviting comparison with $700 devices by marketing it as they do.

Posts like this is what causes contention among people. I think most people understand it's basically a steal for what you get at this price, but when you have people who act like the phone is flawless it's highly annoying. The nexus 5 is a great phone but the battery life definitely isn't one of it's strengths. Battery life is average on this phone, if you think it's great(or great with tweaks) try out other phones and you'd reconsider your definition of great.

I'm assuming the Nexus program was an intention of to show what Google can bring to the platform through software and not hardware.. Well then.. can Google make another program where hardware matters and listen to the community of what they want without cutting corners? I'll pay for that.

I have yet to see anyone acknowledge the feet accomplished by Google. Let's look at the problem space here. We need to build a phone with a good camera. Has latest hardware specs. Performs well with new operating system as it will be a hallmark device for it. Works on major carriers. Has LTE support. Work internationally. Has international LTE support. Supports both gsm and cdma. Oh and let's not forget it needs to be half the cost of all other flagship phones! Come on people there is only one other company that is even comings close to accomplishing such feet's and that xoimi. And for now they are only China based handsets. So let's give some props where props are due. I just got my bad boy today and I am in love with it!

Many of you talk like Google Play supported countries are the only countries in the world. In many countries in Asia the Nexus 5 will cost just as much as the S4 and Htc One. In that case, it is unreasonable to see these issues in such an expensive phone. I may still buy it because of the development but please don't say that there had to be corners cut for the cheap price when in the majority of the world the phone is being sold for the equivalent of other high end phones.

I'm sorry but what do you mean by "they try to make it pass for a no-compromise product"? Who exactly are "they"?
From my understanding, the product was launched WITHOUT any fanfare. It just mysteriously one day popped up on Google Play store.
If by "they", you mean the Tech Media and their "rumors" and leaks..... then yes, that's what they do. but the manufacturer and seller of this product never set any expectations, we set them as consumers from what we were fed by the tech media.

pretty much.
Lastest in processing, graphics, bluetooth, radio chipset, NFC, wireless charging (Very few phones support this), excellent software, a rather well built device, great screen, acceptable battery life, acceptable camera...... and to package it all in a $350 price tag...it's no small feat indeed. I think the more we take THAT into account, we can begin to appreciate the $350 price tag.

unfortunately, there are other economic factors that play into the pricing here when involving other countries that just out of Google's hands. Customs, taxation, economic conditions all play a role in it....... just things that can't be controlled in all cases.

Yes but in my case it is completely reasonable for me to moan about low QC, battery, speakers, and camera when I paid full price. Of course I won't be doing that because the nexus 5 is awesome for the most part.

I certainly wouldn't trade a working HTC One or Note 3 for one as some have suggested. Not even a G2. But for those who need a new phone on their own dollar there is no other choice.

My phone is perfect in every way not one defect. Best phone i have owned. Coming from a s3

It's not only hardware. It's also this f****** closed source cpu drivers with Samsung, (exynos), the considerable delay to have version updates with correct sources and so on. A lot of major companies tend to turn like Apple. (See Knox, region simlock and so on)
Google is not a charity foundation neither, but at least our devs have less pain to bring us good roms.

Yeah 350 for you guys in the states, I got mine at 520 in asia
Life is not fair

12 hours usage so far today, battery is at 73%. Spent about an hour streaming music over wifi at the gym. About 1 hour of sporadic screen on time. Pretty happy with the battery.
What people forget is that when they get a new phone they tend to spend much more time than usual installing new apps, testing things out. The battery ran out on me and I started to agree with you all... until i realised i had installed 80 apps and played 3 different games for 4 hours of screen on time. (add on top of this all the stuff going on in the back ground setting things up).

Its a nexus device I guess aim toward developer so they can build better apps and stuff. The regular Betty and Nancy can love along lol

Amazon has the Droid Bionic FREE w/ a 2 year contract for new customers (not upgrades)
Hope this helps someone
That sure is a great way to start with Verizon....
I just bought this phone for 179 last month from them as a new customer... Sigh. Atleast this will hopefully get some more ppl involved in developing for this phone

Crazy to me that no one jumped on this deal
3 replies for a free Droid Bionic?
I know most of the people here have the Bionic already but I would think a few new members would jump on this deal asap.
No, lol. No one wants a locked BL POS when the phones on the horizon are looking so much better. Tuesday 2 or 3 phones, both of which are going to be better than the Bionic will be announced.
One of which is a Samsung, and the other is called 'Rezound'. I'll take a pass.
hmm... i take it that deal's just if you're going through amazon. my thunderbolt is having issues(needs a new screen+digitizer) and i called verizon. they offered to mail me a new bionic for $300 & i can keep the thunderbolt to.

As a former captivate owner I feel your pain. It's not just their phones either. I had terrible experiences with their bluray players as well.
The Amazon deal for the Bionic is a steal.

I had a DLP TV of theirs a few years back. One of the first 1080P projection models, back when LCDs of that size were prohibitively expensive. Gorgeous screen, but the speakers went out within 6 months of use, the tuner flaked out... "Pretty to look at, but useless" summarizes my experience with Samsung in general.
Generally speaking, I've actually heard really great things about samsung TV's and monitors and I've had pretty good experiences. My family has 4 samsung TV's and 2 monitors and none of them have had problems. They're all currently in the 2-4 year age range. I also know a couple of friends that have had TV's for a couple years with good results thus far. It's not hard to find bad apples for any company.
The upcoming samsung device is supposed to be a google experience device, isn't it? I kind of separate google experience devices from normal devices of any one company. I wouldn't say they're miraculous devices or anything like that, but they definitely seem to be of higher quality, in general.

Hardware wise they're pretty ordinary- or at least share components with other phones (HTC Incredible/N1 and Galaxy S/N-S). It's the leaner software that makes them unique. But you're right, it only takes a few bad experiences to sour my opinion of a company in general. And I would say I've been saddled with an inordinate number of lemons.
What really tempers my opinion is that all of my Galaxy S phones (Captivate, Fascinate and finally Charge) had more or less the same issues. The Cappy was the only one that shut itself down from idle (thankfully), but the other two had the same problems with not getting calls or texts, terrible GPS, inconsistent data connection, heat management, etc. It seems to me that Samsung just can't get their software QA right. I would certainly hope a true Nexus phone would be different... and I didn't hear any bad reports about the Nexus S, so one Samsung warranty exchange fewer and I might have given it a try. As is, I'm giving Moto their fair shot.

Crap..you did a lot better than me. My Charge was as mint as mint gets with an Otterbox Commuter case - started at $350 and after 3 weeks on Craigslist I finally let it go for $200. When it got to $250 I decided to swipe the 32gb MicroSD though, f$$k it.

What's The Catch!

Can not for the life of me see how this phone is so cheap considering the specs and build quality. Anybody had any hands on experience with the phone find any flaws? If I get the money I'm almost definitely going to buy this. I just hope that the battery life and sound quality are decent as to me it just seems too cheap to be perfect. I also hate the snobbery from the iPhone users who have seen the price of this and think what a load of cheap garbage but I'd love for this to prove them wrong.
It's not that this phone is cheap, it's that unlocked phones are CRAZY overpriced.
There is no catch, Google wants to get consumers away from carrier control and push their Android ecosystem. Win/win for them.

Search Nexus 4 reviews on Google, I'm sure you bound to find many advantages and disadvantages. Biggest ones to concern me is the glass back breaks easily and that storage wise you only get 8GB or 16GB. Not having LTE isn't a problem since I'm with T-Mobile.
They are probably only barely breaking even on the costs; phones like the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5 have a unit cost much lower than their retail cost. Gotta make money somehow. I'm not sure what Google's motivations are with setting these prices, but they're not making a profit from them.

Probably pushing stock android and android development. Google isn't looking to get a profit on the phone, but they are looking to get a profit on what you do with the phone (aka: search).

That's very interesting Daniel. It kind of sounds like how Sony sold the ps3 at a much lower price than it should be sold. They were losing money to push blu ray so maybe google are selling a really "affordable" High end phone to push android that one step further than iPhone.
Its Google flexing a little, its all about market share so break even is fine. Im aliitle concerned about when motorola takes the lead, though that could be a year or two away. no complaints if they want to give me a break. Im on t-Mobile too so no big deal LTE.
The catch is they know you will buy apps. + you may be tempted to get one for other peeps in your life as they are cheap and its xmas time. These peeps, will also buy apps.

I suppose the glass breaking could be an issue but then again I treat my phones like the crown jewels so I doubt that would be a huge problem for me. Also being in the UK on three I get decent HSPA speeds so the lack of LTE or 4G is absolutely irrelevant to me and most of the UK. The faster phones processors are getting the faster web browsing is with 3g anyway so I'm not fussed for 4g at the moment.
Right, they want Android everywhere and this is how Android wins eventually..not to mention it costs them squat per phone to build..

So it's a marketing ploy to really push android. I'm fine with that As long as they weren't sacrificing any quality with the phone. This is surely exciting. I hope I can get one as soon as possible. I'm a huge phone geek (well that's obvious being on XDA as we all are) and I've never seen anyone with a Nexus device in the UK so I think it will be great If people in the UK will start getting them. I've always been with sense so vanilla will be a completely new experience.

haha I'm so glad no one has said it. It barely matters to anyone outside of the US!
As great as this price is to get Android out into the world more, I just have a feeling that since the phone is only being sold on the play store for the (majority of people to buy) I am concerned that if they dont go all out on commercials (which they should of started with already IMO) then I have a feeling that they wont get many new people buying the phone.

Not sure there's a catch. I don't like the glass back. Seems like they're copying Apple. I also don't ;like how you can't remove the battery. They wear out after a while.
I hope hope hope that they improved the camera. When the Galaxy Nexus was released, it was promised that it took pictures instantly. This was an improvement from my older Androids which used to take 2-5 seconds to focus and snap a pic. However, the camera on the Galaxy Nexus was weak as hell. Grainy and blurry in low light and only 5 MP..
Most likely, Google is making a limited profit with this device because they just want to get it out there.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm sure the bulk of their profit from Android is based on the play store. Lower the cost of phones, get them in to the hands of more people, and in turn the people buy more apps from the play store. There's their profit:thumbup:

Cost for making an iPhone 5 is $389.XX. Read it in the Time magazine. This may answer the question.
Its not marketing.. its just how they do money. Google is the second most profitable company in the world. And now of that was accomplished by selling hardware. Selling hardware at cost that boosts their income method is the best way to stay in "what they best". Plus it has some perks like happy customers, injected competition and market confidence.
On the other side of the medal, you have apple, the most profitable company in the world, that makes their money on high margin.
Both ways are legit ways to make money, but me, personally I prefer the half priced one
No, catch. Like what others have posted Google wants people using their ecosystem.
I think its great they are pricing it at cost probably, I'm sure there is profit but very little. I'm tiredof carriers and manufacturers raping customers with their crazy markups.
I've never had my phone battery go bad on me. The battery is easily accessible via 2 screws on bottom of phone, no biggie.
LTE is not really a deal breaker for me, I'm in las Vegas and get 14mbps on T-mobiles faux G.

Theory as to why LG is constantly out of stock, and why Google made a bad decision.

I have a theory as to why the Nexus 4 is out of stock, and for such a long time. This may or may not have been mentioned before (probably has) but I just wish to discuss it. Remember, this is purely speculation.
The reason LG has only made around 400,000 handsets and starved production was due to their own flagship, the LG Optimus G. Every single thing about this phone, is IDENTICAL to the Nexus 4, besides the fact the N4 is rocking stock stock android and the aesthetics are slightly different. The N4 has an advantage among the developer community with it being able to be torn apart and tweaked and tinkered with, unlike the OG which LG is still being a little b____ about the bootloader on many of their recent phones.
The 16GB LG Optimus G is $800 here in Australia, and the 16GB Nexus 4 is $400. You do the math.
I don't know if LG's actuaries are idiots or something, but they would have known about the guaranteed success of the next Nexus device, going on the sales figures of all the other devices. LG thought that making a tiny amount of profit on every Nexus device and in turn increasing their companies reputation in the mobile business, was worse than not making ANY profit on their CRAPBOX 3000 (LG Optimus G). I can see where they are coming from, as they don't want their spectacular flagship to be left in the dust with full stock, but zero sales so basically I think they were just chucking a cry or something.
SO DON'T HATE ON GOOGLE FOR THE LACK OF NEXUS'
What you can hate Google for, is choosing LG in the first place. Yeah, they may of felt generous and were trying to support them but at the cost of their own company getting hated? Why didn't they just buy LG like they did with Motorola, and that would be the end of it? When I heard of the new Nexus Device, I celebrating because for some reason I thought they were going to choose HTC for production (who knows why). Nek minnit, they choose some struggling company that either can't or won't keep up with production.
This may of looked like a run-out-of-the-mill rant, but this was some, high-quality, researched ranting skills to pay the bills.
Discuss.

I fail to see how you guys can always come up with such gossip.
Google has made contracts with LG and they are producing the amount Google demanded.
Whether it was Google ordering just a tiny amount of phones, or LG can't keep up with production, due to manufacturing errors or anything else, we will never know.
Also, LG is not a bad hardware manufacturer. They do have the capability to spit out hundreds of thousand devices a month, and they've proven that they can.
For your info: devices produced in October: 75k
Devices produced in December: 400k
As you can see, they can definitely keep up with the demand, it's probably just Google ordering only tiny amounts of it.
A contract breach, as in simply not delivering the amount of phones Google demanded, would have legal consequences for them, so I guess they will be thinking twice before hampering the production.
Cheers.
Lg has good hardware? Hmmmm...i don't know. Have you hold Lg L9 or L7, its a pure piece of ****. Quality zero. Maybe they build good displays and parts, but housing of every device is ****y. TVs also.

Lol, do you think "hundreds of thousands of devices a month" is anywhere near enough for a $600 phone priced at $350? Try several millions a month.
Oh and those production numbers were just speculation (albeit a logical one). No one knows the exact numbers.
Why does everyone blame LG? Is there a valid excuse for Samsung taking forever to restock the Nexus 10?

Good point. Google is just building the hype. If they wanted to really earn money on N4 they would behave differently.

Yes, 400k might not be enough. But don't expect the nexus to sell like the iPhone or a Samsung galaxy. There simply is no marketing at all for the nexus. Companies like Apple and Samsung invest millions every year into marketing. Have you ever seen a nexus 4 ad other than on YouTube?
Probably not. The nexus' demographic is mostly tech enthusiasts.
I don't think LG is intentionally halting the manufacturing process, i mean they would be really stupid to do so, some of of you seem to forget that one of the biggests ways to sell is having quantity over price, if LG sells 5 million Nexus 4 that would make them a ton more money than selling 1 million Optimus G  , also it doesn't hurt that a lot more people are talking good stuff (regarding quality) about them, that could never hurt a company .
What LG did on purpose (in my opinion) was refusing to provide a 32 gb version of the phone , so if people want more storage (and LTE) they should buy the Optimus G

I had a 2012 47" LG HDTV and the housing was actually pretty nice. They used some type of real brushed metal for the housing instead plastic made to look like brushed metal like other manufacturers. I ended up returning it for a bigger TV though.

I'm sorry but this post is complete and utter rubbish. I have seen more adverts on telly for nexus 4 and nexus 7 than I have Samsung devices in the last month, so you cannot claim that there is no marketing at all. Get your facts straight.
Add to that the nexus adverts had me thinking it was an advert for an iPad, and Google are pretty bloody clever with their advertising.

I can only speak for my country, but advertising for the nexus 4 is nonexistent here.
Hell, the only nexus ad I've ever seen was for the nexus s a few years ago. On the other hand, there are Samsung and Apple ads multiple times a day.
And I know that this is the case for a lot of countries.

"telly" suggest the UK or somewhere there which makes sense as someone else says the "Tube" and such which is London's subway .
In the USA however, there is 0 ads on TV for the Nexus 4, there are some for the Nexus 7 but NEVER has there been one for the Nexus 4 or 10. Not even in the newspaper other than reviews and such mentioning it. Maybe that's why they don't however as they've already got tons of (positive) press here. In general, you advertise to get your name out there and build brand, once you are out there and everyone knows your name you tend to save those ad dollars.

The Future of Nexus Smartphones

As most(if not all) of us watch google i/o, google released the galaxy s4 with stock android, as well as "prompt" future updates. What do you guys think this means for the future of nexus do you think companies will continue to build phones for google when they can just appeal to everyone and relase a version of their flagship with stock android?
I guess I never really thought about it yet. That's a good point though. I just got into the Nexus family around a month and a half ago and I already feel at home. If there is not a future for Nexus devices, I will be extremely sad. Yeah, you still get pure Android, plus an unlocked bootloader, but there's just something about having a Nexus. I guess I just feel unique having it, you know? I'm not just another guy with a Galaxy S phone. Plus, having a Nexus phone kind of shows that you're a power user/developer. I dunno...I just really love my Nexus 4 and want to be able to buy the next one when I'm ready.
That all said, it makes perfect sense. I'm pretty sure Google sells the Nexus at a loss. And if that's not enough, you see threads on here all the time with people finding the smallest reasons for getting an RMA, reasons that aren't even valid but Google fulfills them anyway. Not only that, but people will brick their Nexus cuz they're stupid and come here to ask what they can do to RMA. They do this when it was CLEARLY their fault for bricking it and they think Google should have to cover the cost for a new one because they (the person) flashed a ROM/kernel for a different phone. If I were Google, I would probably be looking at this option, sadly.
the S4 isnt the only non nexus that has been released in the past with pure android, nor will it be the last. htc has released stock android phones before, so has lg. sony has even been working with aosp for the xperia http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/23/so...n-source-project-for-the-xperia-z-smartphone/
Here's the deal Nexus gives you the most bang for your buck. No one else gives you that. The N4 is half the price of the S4. The next Nexus phone will be a power house of hardware for a bargain.

This, I remember the biggest reason I bought my G2 was due to stock Android. It might not have been AOSP, but was close enough. I kept it running until I got my Nexus, and it was even running 4.2.

lol i hope your right about that one. I just don't want it to be to the point that nexus users get the crap specs from an OEM that is more worried about their flagship. Why should they go all out on a nexus device when they can provide each type of consumer what they want...a version with either their skinned version of android or pure android. Just playing devil's advocate lol...
Simple there contracted to. If you don't fulfill your contract you don't get paid. To be honest I almost bought a S3 cuz I didn't do much research before buying a phone. The nexus is the best kept secret from none rooters, flashers, etc. Thank god I do tons of research before buying anything and troll xda

Galaxy S4 is not the first device reintroduced in the i/o with stock android, back in 2011 or 2010 google introduced Galaxy Tab 10.1 with stock honeycomb in it.
And for AOSP support, not every device shipped with vanilla android in it get an AOSP support.

I don't get the reaction to Samsung's Google edition S4. It isn't a Nexus and shouldn't be compared with a Nexus. The Nexus product line is first and foremost designed by Google then built by their respective manufacturers. The S4 doesn't even follow the button layout for Android! This Google edition S4 is just purely software and since I assume that Samsung will be the ones responsible for maintaining the software, it'll still be second class compared to the Nexus line when it comes to the latest and greatest Android version.

Nexus 4 is based on LG Optimug G. It is almost like a little redesigned Optimus G with Google's software. SGS4 Google Edition isn't redesigned, but also got Google's software. It will be sold through Play Store, it was revealed on Google I/O by Hugo Barra and it was said that it will get updates at the same time as other Google's devices. So like it or not, SGS4 Google edition could be easily called Nexus 5. I guess they didn't want to launch new Nexus only a few months after LG Nexus 4 became widely available.
Nexus 4 is very good phone, the best for its price, but got some problems - thermal throttling, cracked glass on back, which isn't cheap to replace due to internals on backcover, limited internal space and lack of SD cards, camera isn't very good. Other than that, it is very good phone. SGS4 got great hardware, but software is its weak point and I didn't want to get another Galaxy S phone because of that. But now SGS4 Google Edition is very tempting, because finally great hardware will get great software + fast updates.
The Galaxy S4 Google Edition is not a Nexus device, as much as Samsung fanboys would believe it is.
Apart from Google calling it the Nexus S4, planning to update it timely and selling it through the play store.
I'm sure Google has nice plans for their Nexus series. Or will stop making them. Which I highly doubt! Hope.
Also I don't know how anyone could get themselves to believe they sell a product at a loss.

Google/Android have a confusing agenda of where they want to go with the Android platform.
I guess their agenda is to just throw the kitchen sink at everyone and everything and hope to conquer the mobile platform that way.
I thought they had a certain way they were going to do the "Nexus" line.
Nexus is "pure google"
"Prompt" updates
"state of the art" hardware (with horrible camera..ha ha)
affordable pricing
The Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 (especially with the price reduction of the original GNex to $399 than $350).
I personally do not think the pure Galaxy S4 will be a big seller in the USA. Most Americans are on family plans with post paid services like ATT or Verizon.
Paying full $650 price for a smartphone only makes sense if you go prepaid and have 1-2 lines. Most Americans on post paid have 4-5 lines where subsidized phones make sense.
No one remembers the original iPhone was $499/599. It was not a big seller except for techies or people who have too much money. When Apple dropped the price to $399 it boosted sales quickly.
There is still plenty of money to be made by selling phones below $400. Most top of the line smartphone cost $200-250 to make. So profit margin is still there.

I know. It costs $200-250 to make a smartphone with high end specs. Even accounting for advertising costs. Their is still $50-100 profit to spare.
I think Google purposely kept the 8GB/16GB with no SD to secure profits.
I might have missed something but does anyone else think that the fact Google bought Motorola mobility means they are going to eventually stop dependence on other phone manufacturers? It sucks to build awesome software and have to rely on other companies to put it on. Then said company delays in putting updated software on devices which in turn makes people upset they got android in the first place.
I know kinda out there but i can kinda see how this would work.

Because they probably do. Let's break it down. It'll be quite a journey, so pack a lunch.
The cost of materials alone cost, let's say, $250. That's only $50-$100 "profit" per unit. Considering how many units they sell, that's still a large amount of money, right? Well, that $250/unit cost doesn't cover labor (that I know of, I could be wrong; in which case disregard this point, there are plenty more). They have to pay the people to assemble the phones. Then they have to pay to ship it over-seas to get it to the U.S. Don't quote me here, but I think companies have to pay taxes on commercially-imported things. You know the U.S. government want their cut. Even if that's not true, don't worry; there are plenty of other things to eat that $50 up.
Research and Development is probably the biggest cost of any small electronics device. You have to pay those engineers to design your phone with the hardware you want and make it the size you want. I'm no pro or anything, but I'm pretty sure R&D has beta-testing of the hardware from the prototype all the way to the finished product. That's hardware that will never see light of day.
I take that back about R&D being the most costly thing about making electronics. Let's touch on the point I made of people RMA'ing. When it's legitimate, it costs the company a ridiculous amount of money. I don't even know what they do with the phones that are RMA'd, but I don't see them selling refurbished phones on the Play store. That's money down the drain. And that's when it's legitimate. Think about those guys that RMA because they are idiots and flashed the wrong kernel to the phone. Google still fulfills those RMA's! They lose so much doing this, it boggles my mind.
Now let's look at why. Why would Google knowingly sell devices at a loss? It isn't exactly the best business practice to sell things and lose money on them. First, let's look at the developers. This phone is a "developers" phone. If you're developing for Android, you are probably using a Nexus to test your app and tweak it. When you're done developing your app, what do you do? Publish it in the Play store. All these "app stores" you see everywhere are huge cash cows, and they cost almost nothing to keep going. Throw an app store up, shave a little off the top of every purchase, and kick back while the money flows in. Secondly, and this is true for every company that sells anything, there is the reputation of the company/product. You make a solid phone and sell it for pretty cheap, you get happy customers. Happy customers tend to also be returning customers. I know people that buy iPhones simply because it's called "iPhone", and has the apple on the back of it. That's purely the reputation of the phone. They were happy with their previous phones, so they simply go to the updated version of it when they need to buy another one. I picked on iPhones because it's probably the most widespread example of this, plus it has to do with a phone, which is what we're talking about.
The nexus line is Googles way of thanking developers and phone enthusiasts, they are ones that buy the phone

Not really. It's a consumer device in the same arena as the Galaxy series, however Google has failed miserably at advertising and pushing their product due in part to poor management. The same corporate structure that gives rise to things like AOSP is not the ideal format for selling items across multiple countries and cultures. They still cannot definitively say what the end goal is with the Nexus line. If they're trying to steer people into Google services then they need to figure out how to advertise and sell, which in this country means getting in bed with the carriers, and that will not change no matter how much these forums boast about prepaid plans. That doesn't even begin to get into the area of "open source" and how no one outside of this community gives a damn.

Retail Cost "Excuse"

This speakerphone is probably the worst I have heard. It seems no matter who is on the other end of the phone call whether it be a cell or land line, speakerphone sucks. However, playing music through spotify is quite a bit better. Even still this is one of the quietest, if not the quietest speakers I have heard. I actually may agree with the "iVerge" review on that aspect. Us fans of Google / Android and the Nexus program have a hard time accepting criticism for the things we love. Hell anyone has a hard time accepting criticism for what you love or want to love.
When compared to the 5S; the Nexus 5 at full volume is equal to the 5S at half.
The speakerphone may be the sole reason for me returning the Nexus 5. I love the screen, the battery seems great especially for a first day charge, and the camera app will be updated. You cannot update or make a speaker quality better, unfortunately.
Comparing the costs of the Nexus 5 vs the high end units should not count as an excuse we have to make as consumers. "Oh it only cost $349 or $399, I should expect to have a *****ty speakerphone, or possibly poor camera performance." Price is the excuse that everyone makes when something is wrong with the Nexus 5, or any of the past Nexus phones. Stop making excuses as consumers. Shouldn't we all want the best that Google is capable of? The phones components may very well be similar in price to the HTC One or S4, Google just chooses to make much less profit because they don't need to make most of their revenue from selling cellular devices.
The iPhone 5S is $199 to make. Apple chooses to sell them for $649. If Apple can make a great phone for $199 then so should Google and LG be able to.
Even if the Nexus 5 cost $199 to make or perhaps $250, or $275 an extra $75 above the cost of the iPhone for a huge company such as LG should be plenty to spare to make THE HIGHEST quality phone out there.
The S4 cost $237 to build, for example and arguably has certain higher quality components such as the 13MP camera, and 2600mAh battery and an equivalent screen size of 5 inches. I could not find the HTC One cost to build.
If Google is really all about getting 4.4 and android into the next billion customers, they should make the highest quality phones and perhaps think about selling them at or near cost to build and make profit from the play store instead.
Unfortunately the only thing for me that is better specifically about the Nexus 5 over the iPhone is the screen (not comparing OS's). Man is it gorgeous. And when that's the only thing that is better, I am disappointed to say but it is going back. And no, the additional retail price of the iPhone is not a relevant argument as explained above as it is likely that they have a somewhat similar cost to build.
I'll take an HTC One-2 around March with a 5 inch display, normal camera and without the huge bezels.

really don't understand the flack about the speaker. I can honestly say it is better than my old HTC One XL.
He's kind of right whether you like the tread or not.

Buddy, this a complaint thread. If you have something good to say please do not do it here!

I think he is onto something. Google should really be selling this phone for $199 max unlocked. They are just ripping us off and I do not think we should take it!

Google and LG are big companies; they should probably just give the phone away for free to build brand recognition and get us into the Android ecosystem. The divide between rich and poor widens!
So... I don't get it. You're saying that things being lower price is no excuse for being not as good as more expensive things? You do realize how backwards that is, right?
Price aside, the Nexus 5 can definitely compete with the high end phones you listed. Maybe not AS good, but definitely able to compete. It does everything I want it to do and more. If they had to skimp somewhere, I'm glad it was the speakerphone and not the CPU or screen or build quality or anything else that, in my opinion, are way more important.

Oh boy, another thread with something we haven't heard before.
Do you know how much it cost for them to make my blow dryer? I want to make sure I am getting my money's worth.
*BRB, need to give this thread the wonderful rating it deserves.

Blow dryers. Nice. I am arguing for the sake of us as consumers and yet you argue that we should basically, "Not really worry about getting our moneys worth."
*BRB we have a badass senior member over here.

You're not arguing for my sake, I assure you. The speaker is satisfactory to my needs, and I speak very well for myself as a consumer (with my wallet, which is the only way businesses listen anyhow).

If you want to argue for our sake, call Google and tell them to reduce the price of the phone because we are not getting our money's worth. Then I will high five you. Until then, you are doing squat for us.

I am not saying that the cost of the phone is too expensive... that is not the point of the argument.
The point of the argument is that, "If Google is really all about getting 4.4 and android into the next billion customers, they should make the highest quality phones and perhaps think about selling them at or near cost to build and make profit from the play store instead."
They should charge $359 instead of 349 and give us a $10 better speaker.
The speaker and camera both destroy the speaker/camera that was found on my S3, so I'm more than happy.
Personally I would have gladly spent another $100 for a nexus phone with a better camera battery and speaker.

Or they can put the best speaker on the planet in and charge us $600.
Very helpful.
UPS lost my nexus5, and I'm glad they did after reading the reviews.

THIS is my point! So would have I. And the thing is I doubt Google / LG would have had to spend even close to $100 to get it done. Prices drop considerably when you're selling hundreds of thousands of these.
Lets say that Google is making $100 off of every $349 Nexus 5 (I know they aren't). Instead of raising the cost to $449 to include the better speakers to still make the same profit, they should keep the cost at or near $349 and sell the phones at or near cost to build and make profit from the play store instead.
