Galaxy Gear Scratches? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Today is my first whole day with my new gear that arrived yesterday, and I already have a small scratch on my screen. I'm very anal about my devices, so I might be upset over something stupid, but I wanted to see if other owners have experienced any scratches on their gears..? I take extreme care over my devices -- never drop or bang my devices against anything to cause it any physical and/or internal harm (knock on wood). How is everyone else's gear holding up? Any scratches so far?

Use a Screen protector if worried about scratch

Use a screen protector, they are available on eBay and elsewhere and they are cheap and they are barely noticeable if applied correctly. I use a wet type from Extreme Guard with no problems.

Can I ask if the wet screen guards are harmful for the device or not, I know Gear is non-water resistant, I bought a wet guard without knowing it from e-bay

The Gear is Water resistant but not water proof meaning minor splashes should not harm it but a submersion in water would not be good so applying a wet application screen protector using the same precautions that you would use on a phone should be safe. Just moisten the screen protector with sufficient water to allow for application and you should have no problem and wipe off any excess water immediately. I currently have a wet application screen protector on mine and had no problems and I've also been caught in the rain a few time with it and have had a few splashes of water on it with no problems. To understand how the gear is assembled there are a few YouTube videos on a tear down of the gear so you can see how it is protected and made, which I found reassuring to ease my mind on water exposure. Hope this answers your question.

Galaxy note broken screen after only 2 weeks: anyone else?

Hello. I bought a galaxy note on 28th november. After only 2 weeks of absolutely normal and careful use, my screen is scratched and broken. Ok, it is a small crack, but it is not good.
It never fell and it never hit anything. After only 2 days, i noticed some scratchs and some other came in the days after. Then, the part of the screen between the upper edge and the speaker broke in two, with a crack (small, 5mm but still a crack) going from the edge to the speaker. I can't post a photo as i sent it back to samsung for repairs (it had also display issues). Do you know a reason for it? It should be gorilla glass, and i only kept it in my pockets without anything inside apart the smartphone. Do you think samsung will repair it since it happened during normal use after ONLY 2 weeks? I'm really annoyed and disappointed.
Anyone experiencing glass resistance issues?
Thanks
Call samsung and send it in they will fix it..

Yes, i did it and i'm waiting, and i also adressed the lines issue and the green/banded screen, but i am in italy and i'm not sure if it is covered by warranty, it should: they can say i broke it.
The Corning Gorilla Glass was one reason I went with the SGS2.
The other reason was fear of provoking the wrath of God for having such a sensationally beautiful device (the Note). It's an awesome device, really.
But God smote those who worshiped a golden calf, too.
lol Sorry, I'm not really a religious fanatic. But yeah, sucks about your screen. Hope Sammy fixes that one up for you.
Welcome Nickelsilver and please don't take this personally and in NO way I'm defending Samsung or the Note but I have to say the neither scratches or dents/cracks come by their own.
They just don't happen/appear magically by themselves on the phone's screen/body. Maybe someone is messing with you Note without you knowing it?
E.g: I have 1mm small and barely noticeable scratch on the top left corner which I suspect it came from the ONLY 1 time my Note slipped from the passenger's seat and fell in the gap between the passenger's door/seat.
I went through 3 screens on my dell streak. Now that I have the note which is even bigger I was so cautious I treated it like a delicate fragile little flower. Needless to say after 2 weeks I noticed what appeared to be a scratch going up from the bottom middle halfway up. Turns out this is not a magical scratch that sprang out of nowhere but an actual crack on the outer glass screen. I have never dropped it but perhaps it was somehow flexed.
No warranty of course. I have ordered the glass itself from overseas and when it gets here in a month I suppose I will try replacing that piece individually as its only the outer glass that seems cracked. Hopefully they do not glue the screens together like they did in the streak ><

Ps. Dont listen and worry about this guy...he thinks only his opinions are important and others experiences are just JUNKS and BORING! Not sure why he would even bother to reply, if they really bores him that much. Maybe he really thinks that he BOOFY the witch hunter or something
Plus.. He forgot that he has also once posted a question regarding to his screen problem too here on the forum.
Gorilla glass is bull****. I had dell 5 streak, and I changed the screen more than 5 times. Little drop will result in screen loss. Do not depend on gorilla glass.
My Samsung Galaxy Note are broke
Yesterday I was knocked out of the hands under my 40 days old Samsung Galaxy Note, the cover glass is cracked along its entire length as a spider's web, while the LCD screen is not damaged, that still works, receiving the touch command. The solution I found in the orders of the new protective glass over eBay. Maybe that was too much angry because it happened to me, but NOTE is too amazing, and I somehow survive.. I'll let it be when we come new safety glass
I do not think this is a witch hunt. More of an informative thread on one weakness to an otherwise amazing device. It may be that until an indestructive clear glass is created that we will continually face this on any large phone. Anything this large will flex easily and likely crack. One thing Samsung definately did right was not glue the glass to the LCD behind it. I put a clear screen cover over mine and you cant even see the crack anymore. Were this a dell streak you would have half of your screen blacked out.
This is definitely the best mobile device out there in my opinion, people should just be extremely cautious with where they carry it. Mine most likely cracked in my pocket from slight flexing.
The glass on the note shouldn't break even when flexed unless it's not Gorilla glass.
Gorilla glass is not only scratch resistant,it is also shatter resistant.
If the glass is breaking frequently on the notes, then I wonder if they really have Gorilla glass.

That demonstration glass at the beginning of the video is about 3 times thicker than what Samsung uses on the Note/Galaxy S2/Galaxy S SAMOLED panels. And it's quite a bit smaller, height/width wise (it's about iPhone 4 sized).
Thickness makes a significant difference in flexibility and shatter resistance. Which is off on a tangent, because the main reason Samsung and others uses GG and similar techniques is not for shatter resistance.
It's almost entirely for the combination of higher scratch resistance vs metals (all bets are off with sand particles) and a better tactile feel (it's smoother) than non-treated glass.
Sure it may not be as thick on the note but you are never going to flex the phone anywhere as much as that demonstration.
My point is that if it is gorilla glass,it shouldn't be that easy to crack the screen given the abuse that it is supposed to be able to take.
All these? Gorilla Glass
And all these? Gorilla Glass
How about all these? Gorilla Glass
Or maybe all these? Gorilla Glass
It's been 10 days since i bought "the Note". I dropped the device just once from 1 meter height. It was a free fall with not much impact power. The screen has a crack on the upper right corner. I know every product is meant to last but so easy , so fast ! ??? Thankfully it still works with no functional issues. It's just the protective glass on top of the actual LCD that is broken. But u can still feel it while wiping your finger and it is appearent...
Hardware wise The Note is simply outragous but when it comes to software and durability it can't even come closer to what i used to find on HTC devices

The weight of the note will count against it during falls compared to say a very light phone like the SG2.Impact is going to be much harder if they both fell from the same height especially given te size of the notes screen.
Until they can make the note lighter, users will just have to be more careful not to drop it.Gorilla glass is not unbreakable.
I get my note tomorrow. Now I'm all paranoid

Well it's happened, I cracked the glass!

You wouldn't believe how it happened either. I was using my tie to quickly remove a smudge before showing it off to someone. My tie has a small pin on it. While wiping lightly with the tip of my tie, an edge of my decorative pin slide across where the glass meets the opening of the microphone area (bottom) caught and edge and cracked it right there. Ya I know, the odds of it catching right there! This happened in an aircraft up at altitude, my screen was still use-able. Once we descended though (pressure increased) 4 almost uniform cracks spread out in a 'V' from the center of the microphone area and now my screen is completely useless and can't unlock it or even power the damn thing off.
I am shocked that it took so little effort though to break this glass. I am thankful though that literally the day before I completed an entire backup to SD card via the included Sony backup/restore app.
Now what.
me too!
Yes same here, my back glass cracked...... Its was in my pocket then I pulled my phone out and put it on a leather couch, within seconds I heard a "Tick" I picked up my phone and the glass had cracked.
Hot in the pocket and cold leather couch made this glass crack. also happened to my wifes phone 20mins ago when she put it on the kitchen bench.... that's what made me write this to this thread.
Massive fault with this phone. Totally ruined the IP rating now which was the reason why I brought this phone. And there is no where selling replacements of glass yet.
Those stories are shocking and I really feel for you guys. I have my Z in a cheap plastic/rubber case and I pray it wont be so easy to crack.
Ouch.. I (literally) threw my friends Z on the floir and nothing happened to it, now I've seen this its kinda shocking...
Hit Thanks if I helped you out

Good news is Visa is replacing the phone for me :good: Bad news is I'm really worried about it happening again now that I've seen how easy it occurs.
Even if replacement screens became available in the future how would a replacement be possible without compromising the water proof design of the phone?

It has nothing to do with the case, but with either pressure difference and/or the temperature changing rapidly.

Thanks for the link, I'm surprised replacement parts are available so quickly but regarding the repair I'm inclined to think that opening this phone up would compromise it and never be water proof again.
So I got my new replacement today. I had done a FULL backup with the included backup/restore app to my SD card in the old phone. I placed into new phone and ran restore immediately after initial setup.
My question is, it seems like I got most of my stuff back, but I'm confused about a few things. My home screen and other pages are still stock, ie it did not reorganize my widgets and apps the way I had them and my google accounts were NOT added that I was syncing previously. I did get my apps, (in the app drawer) and my texts/contacts though.
Am I missing something?
Another cracked glass from my father this time, out of the pocket and onto the bedside table and "tick" glass crack!
really pissing me off! I convinced everyone in my family to get this phone cause I thought it was awesome, now we are all paying the price. And I feel responsible.
$100 for a replacement is not good enough, Sony should be sending replacements out for free! Please post if anyone finds replacement glass for a reasonable price ($40 or less)
Now that the glass cracking threads are popping up I want to remind that heat differences are deadly to Gorilla Glass.
It has happened on lots of devices, mostly aluminum builds, like the Transformer Prime TF201 http://crackformerprime.blogspot.se/
Had one, and well. It's a 4 RMA story, and I've discouraged all aluminum-built devices ever since.
Aluminum cools - Quad core CPU heats, and lots of interesting glass strain may occur. Having said that, I'm curious when the aluminum-unibody HTC One owners pick up on this.
I'll update my guide to urge people to apply any provided protective back/screen protectors (if) provided with the Xperia Z. It aids uniform heat dissipation across the glass, minimizing chances for cracks.
EDIT:

Official backup application does not backup account credentials, launcher layout, nor most system settings. Else it would be considered a security flaw.
To perform full system backups you need to root you phone, and use a real backup application like Titanium Backup
Thanks Supersaiyan.IV, I've just rooted and will back up this way from here on.
Guys with cracked glass are you using a screen protector? Ifso, with or w/o the anti shatter film? OR are you using the phone w/o a screen protector with or w/o the anti shatter film? Thanks!
Mine was stock, ie, no protectors, original anti shatter film left on.
India is a primarily hot country, so nothing's gonna happen due to temperature differences here.

I would! the anti shatter film scratches easily and once it's scratched you will have to remove it or live with the damage.
Also removing the anti shatter film removes the sony logo.

Top speaker rubberfilm got off?!

Hey guys,
so today i looked at my phone and the white rubber film isnt there anymore.
I looked left and right at the top speaker, but it seems to got off.
Is it still waterproof?
I'm kinda scared of problems now.
Should I try to find one of those film at ebay and replace it?
Greetz
There is no white rubber film on mine (black phone). Actually, there is nothing that would seem like rubber.
But as for the problem. Check if the pressure holds (read https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia...c_owners_what_are_your_pressure_test_results/)
Also, do NOT ever assume that your phone is water proof. There are lots of reasons why the water can get into your phone even when it shouldn't. Assume that if you are lucky then heavy rain will leave your phone working.
But please, do protect anything that is electronic. Perhaps the smartwatch is almost water proof - phones with flaps - impossible.

my pressure is at 1012,40 milibar.
It doesn't change if I open the flaps tough...
also it doesn't change if i press on the screen.
If it doesn't change with flaps closed, then your 99% not waterproof anymore.

No screen protector

No screen protector on my phone and my god, gorilla glass 5 sucks so bad. I've put this phone through the same exact usage and storage and pockets and what not that my 3t went through and holy crap it is so scratched up and cracked from less than 1 month of using it. I take really good care of my phones so every time i pull this out of my pocket and see a new one i get so frustrated beyond belief. Theres over 30 scratches and grooves on my phone now and theres 0 on my 3t. If anything ive been way gentler on this phone than my 3t. This is a case where the higher number is worse.
I am not sure..but something is pricking the device in your pocket..
For me gorilla glass 5 is a flop.
I NEVER use my phones naked! there is no scratch resistant glass yet in use in the actual smartphones.
My phone pocket is dedicated solely to my phone. Its judt that gorilla glass 5 has no scratch resistance especially not as mucn as 4 did. Theres no scratches on my 3t.... It pisses me off that i paid 500 bucks for a phone that cant even take a key.
I'm not rocking a screen protector. It's been over a month. Gorilla glass is holding up very well. No scratches at all. No complaints.
I don't put my keys in the same pocket as my phone though. That's crazy! Lol

That's your problem right there.......Sorry, but I treat my phone better than that. Keys never ever touch my phone. I don't care what kind of advertisements about new glass tech there are. If you care so much about scratches to post about it here, then you should be using a screen protector or being more careful with your phone.
My OP5 screen is naked and I have not had any issues with it. Phone protection is really a personal thing. Everyone treats their phone different. Depending on what you do, protect your phone accordingly. There really is not comparison between different people.
I dont keep my keys near my phone. Idk where u all got that info from as I said i only keep my phone in its own pocket with nothing else. These scratches appear from nowhere and show how brittle and weak this glass if if my 3t went through the same usage as this one with no scratches
What screen protector do you all recommend? i just bought this spigen case here. Should i just get the protector from oneplus' website? Or is there a really good one that can slide under the case so its not even noticable?

You don't seem to understand how it works. First, GG won't protect your from cracks, only scratches. Secondly, it's still limited to the hardness of the glass. Any mineral that's harder than it will scratch it, so it's immune to keys, but sand will wreck it.
I am not a screen protector fan.. but reading so many compliments about how poor gorilla glass 5 is vs scratches.. hmm, damn! I will have to think twice before removing the pre-applied screen protector..

Sorry can't believe that a soft cloth pocket would scratch ANY smartphone screen these days or even from 3 years ago. Something scratched that screen and certainly if you're mentioning gouges. You mentioned a key... that is what did it and just lightly in a pocket wouldnt do it either... so must have sat on the phone with the key as well.

Even that wouldn't have done it, I don't think. JerryRigEverything tried to scratch the screen with keys and it didn't do anything. He'd either have to put a LOT of pressure on it, or he has shards of something harder in his pocket [sand, probably]

Fingerprint smudge

Has anyone who plays a lot of games notice a smudge that just will not go away? I play injustice 2 a lot and 2 spots on screen where my thumbs are usually it looks like I have worn away a costing on the glass. I can buff with a cloth but you can still see them as you turn phone in right light. I'm not trying to be nitpicky but it's not even month old and paid slot of money. I'll try and post pics when I get home and have access to another camera
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
I play a lot of Real Racing 3 (1-2 hours a day sometimes less) I have not noticed any fingerprint smudges that would not wipe away. My recommendation would be to get Eye glass or lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Wipe it down and see if that helps. I use https://www.amazon.com/Absorbent-Microfiber-Cleaning-Cloths-Computer/dp/B008FPTID2/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1507123733&sr=8-13&keywords=microfiber+cloth
They have been working great so far and I use them to wipe down everything with a screen. Just remember to wash them frequently as well. I just throw mine in the laundry and then hang dry them.

Either try Samsung service center to fix it, or try fix it yourself. I use screen protector, so never experience it myself and I don't see this being mentioned too often, so I wouldn't even begin to speculate why it happened to you.

"smudges" aren't noticeable when screen is on, it's more visible in black screen/screen off. i had to get the screen dirty with my finger natural oil/dirt, to give emphasis on the "smudges". i also used my other phone's camera flash to make it more visible. i've also tried putting those oleophobic liquid protector but it didnt help at all. the pictures i posted were after i applied the liquid so you be the judge.
is "smudge" the right term? not sure bout calling it a stain too. coz it's more like oil... just like when you put a drop of oil on a paper towel.
I actually have that as well, mine is on the Volume button up area the size of "a index finger". While wiping with my microfiber cloth, everywhere is smooth except that part, when I wipe I don't wipe it hard at all since the day I got my hands on it. I believe it's a defect right out the box and I don't use any screen protector.
I just saw your image Pryor06 except mine is not noticeable both on and off screen but it can be felt when wiping. Any conclusion?
Have you guys tried washing it under water with soap?
i actually haven't noticed any difference in the "texture"(?) of the screen. all felt smooth except with the visuals/optics of the screen when screen is off/black. i was on the bus on my way back home when I noticed the smudges under the sunlight. I had no cleaning materials that time, so for the meantime I used a little of my saliva:angel: on one part of the screen's problem. The surrounding part got clean, except the part with the issue. After I got home, I used alcohol and wiped the phone clean, thoroughly but gently, before applying the oleophobic liquid protection. "Smudges" were also around the bottom left, bottom center, bottom right of the screen but not as worse. I thought the top middle part smudge was enough evidence for me to claim warranty.
Blecap, try using white light from a phone camera to check your screen. Not sure about SG, but if you could get it replaced for warranty then go for it. Otherwise, I think all Samsung Note 8 have Concierge service, wherein our phone's screen is under warranty for free replacement of screen+labor for 6 months from date of purchase.
I had to be careful in handling the phone since day 1, because I wasn't able to get a screen protection. It's hard to prove and claim warranty here in the Philippines. All Samsung have to say is it's the fault of consumers, or normal wear and tear, and customers don't have anymore options. I've experienced it first hand, remember the screen lifting/bubble on Samsung Note 5, I was one of the victim. They blamed me for moisture getting in to the phone when I swear I haven't dropped the phone in any liquid. That's why I didn't even want to risk washing the phone in soap and water even with the IP68 of Note 8. I don't want to give Samsung an excuse to blame me again.
I actually was having double thoughts if I would surrender my phone for replacement warranty. I believe it wasn't affecting the phone's performance, so I thought I should just suck it up and live with it. But no, call me nitpicky/demanding/hard to please, but I just had the phone for barely 2 days, and with a price tag of almost $1,000, I know we should fight for our rights and demand a quality product. From my research before getting the phone, the only issue I read was the screen "bleeding" on the sides. Maybe that's why I wasn't that too observant on the smudges when I was checking the phone before they release it to me.
I usually just lurk around forums, but I decided to make my account here to warn others that such issue exist. It's a beautiful and powerful phone I have to admit it, but buyers should we aware and check carefully before spending their hard earned money.
Very unlikely
I do not believe you can wear off the coating so easily. Heavy gamer here. Switched to the Note 8 recently but gamed hard on the S8+ as well for months before switching. This includes games that required swiping constantly. The screen on that S8+ is still pristine.

Returned mine
Best thing is to use a non-alcoholic wet wipe and clean the screen then use a clean microfiber cloth.
Samsung S9 Plus Fingerprint Smudge
I am using Smasung S9 Plus and I don't know what is the proper name for it but i am facing same issue.
Temp Solution : It gives you temp solution by using Touch Screen Wipes and Dry Cotton clothes .
but after one or two days it comes again so i am waiting for permanent solution.
Same problem here and I'm not a gamer.... I bought a cheap screen protector a not so good solution.. I think it's a quality control issue on some screens
