[Q] Can't edit build.prop - Rooted/Locked - Moto X Q&A

Hi guys, I'm scratching my head as to why I can't add build.prop values in the build.prop even though I am rooted. I'm using Root Explorer and every time I try to push the edited build.prop in the /system/ directory, it doesn't overwrite the original. I used the RockMyMoto to root. Is there something I should do to fix this or is this somehow locked by Motorola?

Make sure you have the system set for read/write not read only. When you're in root explorer there should be a tab at the top of the page with the option for r/w or r/o.

Thanks. That worked but now it won't stick on boot. It reverts back to default build.prop. Permissions were set correctly. I'm lost lol

To get it to stick on boot, you have to boot into the write protect disabled mode. To do this, boot into bootloader, then select recovery. It will boot Android, but this time with write protect disabled. Make your changes, then reboot as normal.

Everything says I have root, but /system is read only

Running gingervolt 1.2, great rom, ran both oneclick root methods...zerglings etc...the esteem method says the phones been rooted. MT's method runs through the root procedure...then afterwards, I manually update superuser to 3.03, because niether of those methods will do that. Still when attempting to write a boot animation zip to the /system/media folder, I get the error "sytsem is read only"....
not sure if the root isn't taking....any help is greatly appreciated
What are you using to write the boot animation? Also, If you are using Root Explorer make sure you mount /system R/W. I believe it is in the top right corner. I've never used it :/ Just heard from people with it

You have root. Make sure you mount the system folder as read/write (R/W) before you try to change anything. It defaults as read only. If you're using Root Explorer it's in the upper right corner.

Just as info I'm not sure why but using
adb remount has never worked for me the best and easiest way to do it us root explorer just rename the original to bootanimation.zip.old and paste the new one in there

Already done it mate, here you go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773329
If you're looking to integrate this into your ROM, just drop it into /system/media (without unzipping it)
Hope this helps.
Tried to copy but got an error. Is there anything I missed? Thanks

Your file manager needs to have root access. This looks like it should work, if not try Root Explorer, which whilst it is paid for, is well worth the money and you'd be amazed at how often it comes in handy.
You must make the /system directory read/write. You can do this is ES File Explorer (assuming you have root) by hitting the menu button, click on "Settings", and scroll to the very bottom. The second option from the bottom is "Mount File System", and the subtext shows this is to "Mount / , /system as writable." Check this option, then try copying your file.

No problem. Glad to hear it worked.
If you don't want to mess with /system/media and possibly lose the boot animation that is baked in your rom, drop the bootanimation.zip in /data/local and fix permissions.

[Q] need help with r/w permissions

Hello
I recently picked up a HD Fire which is on the newest update 7.2.1 and rooted it with the "Qemu automated root" method, which it said was successful. I see the SU app, thing is "ES file explorer" wont let me turn on root explorer and another app "root explorer" wont let me change system permissions to R/W to move apps around.. I am stuck, and I am assuming that I am not rooted if I cant change permissions?
Thanks..

.... I cant change anything with Read only and I am not able to enable r/w, including moving files to root directory with the app.
Edit: Weird.. I redid the root process for the 5th time and it finally worked.

Glad you got it working....In My experience (which isnt great) Id Just sack ES Explorer and use Root Explorer....Its quite simple in there. There is a button at the top that is for read only or read write.....It says Mount R/W to get read write or when your in RW it says Mount R/O for read Only. Im a massive fan of Root Explorer ....And no I dont have anything to do with it......Its the best Stat! for less than £4 I also have their SQL database editor....Which actually lets you edit stuff...Unlike some Ive had to get refunds for!

Hello,
when I try to switch Root Explorer I got message:
Sorry, test failed!. This feature cannot run on your device.
What I have to do?
I have Kindle Fire HD 7", Serial Number D025 AOAO**** ****
Current version : 7.5.1

Disable the startup sound

This is a very simple how-to for disabling that nerve wrecking startup sound that can not be disabled in the parameters:
Method 1 (root required)
1. root your phone with any rooted system.img
2. run the following commands:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
cd /system/media/audio/ui/
mv PowerOn.ogg PowerOn.ogg.disabled
Method 2 (root required)
Alternatively, a file explorer can be used for the same purpose: go to /system/media/audio/ui/, then rename PowerOn.ogg
Method 3 (root required)
As kindly provided by kicker63: "A quicker way is to just untick all the poweron.Ogg permissions boxes and then Reboot your phone, no more annoying startup sound. Just use Root Explorer to do this. "
Method 4 (no root required)
As kindly provided by aavvaallooss: "NO root needed if you use StartUp Manager (Free). Under Settings pick up "Enable Silent Boot"
This method may or may not work depending on your ROM.
A quicker way is to just untick all the poweron.Ogg permissions boxes and then Reboot your phone, no more annoying startup sound. Just use Root Explorer to do this.

Thanks for this advice. This post is just to say that i used a free app instead of Root Explorer. In italian it's name is ES Gestore File but of course there are other languages versions.

Yeah, basically the literal translation
Hey,
I'm also trying to disable this sound. It's unclear to me if you MUST have a rooted phone for the 2nd option to work? I heard that rooting your phone voids the guarantee?
I tried ES file explorer, was able to locate the file but I can't rename it/haven't found a way to alter the permissions.
thx,
Sven
Yes you must be rooted, to uncheck them boxes.

NO root needed if you use StartUp Manager (Free). Under Settings pick up "Enable Silent Boot"
There we go another quick way to disable startup sound.

Hey,
Thanks for the hint. Unfortunately, this also doesn't disable the start-up sound. This app disables the sound at shutdown, however this doesn't do the trick on this device.
Seems like a cool app though..
I think it's very strange that disabling start-up sound requires root access, and is not configurable by default.. If you think about it, a start-up sound has no use & can only cause frustration, if you need to start-up in a room full of audience..
Metod #4 WORKS great for me!

[Q] Removing AT&T boot animation

Now that we have root and are able to remove most traces of AT&T crap from this phone this is the only one left for me. Is this possible to remove yet with root access?
ROM Toolbox Pro does provide this as an option. I cannot say for sure that it will work/brick your phone. There are tutorials you can find on Google to create a qmg file and over write the existing one.
Use caution.
Let me know if you find something usable!

I have a tool that i wrote that will do exactly this and also enable any standard bootanimation check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53494610&postcount=1 remember it is beta and is being updated also make sure you download the patch file from the attachments its needed to make the bootanimation tweak work
I renamed the boot animation file by adding a ".bak" at the end of it. That took care of the boot animation, however, the sound remained. I disabled the boot sound with Wanam if I remember correctly. No problems so far.

/system/bin
The boot sound can be disabled in Wanam under the sound heading. Just double checked to be sure.
