Downgrade back to 4.2.2? - Moto X Q&A

Battery life has been garbage since the 4.4 update and I would like to go back to 4.2.2. Is this possible yet?

[Q] 4.4.2 OTA on custom ROM

I am using a custom Rom for android 4.4.0 and recently got an OTA alert for 4.4.2.
I've come across something similar twice.
First was when I used a rom to stock android 4.2.2 and then used OTA to get 4.3 and it worked fine, but the second time was 4.3 to 4.4 and it messed my phone up big time and took a whole day to sort it out.
Would it be safe to go through with using OTA for 4.4 to 4.4.2?
Are you using a stock GE?
Why don't try to flash a 4.4.2 rom?

Flashing 4.4+ ROM while still on 4.2.2

So I've previously tried installing a 4.4 and a 4.4.2 ROM on my XT1056, with both leading up to recovery failure once I realized the ROM does not have all of the features that I want or has some bugs.
When I installed the 4.4 over 4.2.2 without flashing it, I then ran into problems like FCs to the point where I could not even get past the screen lock. When I rebooted into recovery it would stay on for a little less than a minute, and while I was trying to restore stock, the recovery would come to a halt and reboot my system. I then had to restore my system.
Today I tried putting 4.4.2 on it and it got through but it had a feature missing from it that I was looking forward to and I tried going back to stock once again and the exact same thing happens. Interrupted restoration to a reboot of nothing.

not sure what you did maybe try reinstalling the recovery
First issue is your setting will fc when your base ROM is 4.2.2 and you have flashed a 4.4 or 4.4.2 ROM, the modem needs to be upgraded to prevent such issues, second issue is the recovery which also needs to be updated to kitkat otherwise you will not be able to restore your nandroids. So you either need to update to kitkat or stay with jb and not flash any kitkat roms

If I were to root 4.4 after taking the OTA, that flashes over a new radio? And if I still go through going to 4.4, would I be able to restore to 4.2.2?

Yes the ota flashes new radios and boot loaders, you can only downgrade from 4.4 to post camera 4.2.2 sbf firmware, I don't believe we can downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2

Posible upgrade and downgrade for MotoX
Im quoting a post from MakTail in other forum:
=======
There are currently 4 different available bootloaders for the Moto X.
In chronological order:
1) Pre-Camera 4.2.2
2) Post-Camera 4.2.2
3) KitKat 4.4
4) KitKat 4.4.2
Pre-Camera ----> Post-Camera <-----> KitKat 4.4 -----> KitKat 4.4.2
The arrows indicate when the bootloader downgrade is possible:
------> (one way update)
<----> (you can move back and forth between these bootloaders)
=======
i think this resolves all the questions about.

right this has to do with the bootloader only thou.
you can still flash everything else but if you do flash everything else and you get a OTA Update and you install it. It will brick your phone and it is not easy to get out of it and sometimes you can't

[Q] Moto X Dev Ed questions about root

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum, though I have used a lot of information posted, this is my first post. Please, bear with me on this!
I have a Moto X Developer Edition running 4.2.2 on Verizon network. I don't mind 4.2.2 but I would enjoy updating to kit kat, my only concern is that when I do so I am no longer able to use FoxFi. I have unlimited data so it is important to me to have the ability to run the hotspot.
What I would like to accomplish with root:
Upgrade to Kit Kat
Run stock hotspot, use the 5GHz hotspot frequency band, and bypass provisions from Verizon just like FoxFi does.
I would like to also be able to revert back to the current state I am at now, whenever I want. (4.2.2 etc)
I am super excited to start playing with my dev ed phone but I want to do it right, and like I said I would like to revert back to an unrooted state with 4.2.2 with no issues, then reapply the root when I feel necessary. (don't know if this is possible)
If this all sounds possible please feel free to help me and you will not regret it. Thanks in advance!

Once you are on 4.4 and rooted, you can use either the Xposed Tethering Module or the Native tether for VZW DE 4.4 Hack

Once on 4.4, you can downgrade to 4.2.2 post-camera update by flashing the firmware. Make sure you only go back to the 4.2.2 post-camera update and not the pre-camera update. Trying to downgrade from 4.4. to the 4.2.2 pre-camera update will brick your device.
Once you upgrade to the 4.4.2 bootloader, you cannot downgrade so don't take the 4.4.2 OTA. Rather, you want to stay on the 4.4 bootloader (since it is the only downgradable bootloader) and selectively flash the 4.4.2 firmware once it is released if you want to run 4.4.2.

The only OTA that can downgrade is 4.4 to 4.2.2 Post Cam. Here is what we know right now that might make more sense
4.4 to 4.2.2 Pre Cam will Brick
4.2.2 Post Cam to 4.2.2 Pre Cam will Brick.
4.4.2 to to anything will Brick

This is useful information, but I was hoping for a bit more detailed walk through. I know that this post is going to get viewed a ton of times, so I will not be the only one that benefits from this. Thanks for the advise on how not to brick this is very important to me.

I put the link to the Xposed Tethering Module in my response to you.
Anyhow, everything you want to do can be done as long as by 4.2.2 you mean the 4.2.2 post-camera update. If by 4.2.2 you mean the pre-camera update, you cannot downgrade the 4.2.2 post-camera bootloader nor can you downgrade the 4.4 bootloader beyond the 4.2.2 post-camera update so you can't go from the 4.2.2 pre-camera update to Kit Kat and ever go back down to it.

I have not update or messed with the phone in anyway. So does that mean I have 4.2.2 pre camera? I think I already mention how excited I am to get started with the tinkering.

What version does your phone say you are on?
You start by taking the 4.4 OTA. How are you blocking the annoying update messages, btw?
Also, are you unlocked already? Get unlocked if you haven't already but that wipes your device so get everything off of your device that you want off before you unlock the bootloader. Then once you are unlocked and have taken the 4.4 OTA, you can follow these instructions to get rooted.

To go back to 4.2.2 POST-camera, you flash the firmware for 4.2.2.
sbf firmware
You can never go back to 4.2.2 PRE-camera once you update beyond it.

I see you're excited to tinker,so unless you want a paperweight, I suggest you do some homework first.
Everything you are asking for is already here in stickies, other threads and hundreds of posts.
You can say I'm being a jerk...but trust me, if you don't study up on this stuff you will one day regret it. There's tonnes of info here already.
Us "digging deeper" to lay it out for you isn't going to give you any of the tools to do this stuff trouble free. Just read about all the bricked devices and you'll see what I'm trying to say.

If you go back to the sbf firmware link above, you will see that is the pre-camera version of 4.2.2 because it is the lower number of the two 4.2.2 versions. Again, you can never go back to that once you update. It is a one way street.
I don't know if the post-camera 4.2.2 allowed native tethering without root because I didn't stay on that version long enough to know. I wanted kit kat.
The pre-camera update camera is unusable. Don't know how you could stay on it.

[Q] Flashed leaked 4.3 can I flash back to stock 4.2?

Guess I didn't look enough into the pros and cons of the leaked 4.3 release for our phones. The phone losing my google account almost daily has me at wits end. My fiance just laughs about it because she has the stock 4.2.2 that I rooted for her and she didn't want the 4.3 update. I in no way want to lose root.. way too much AT&T bloat I refuse to have back on my phone. From what I've seen I can't find a way to restore the factory 4.2.2.. Is there a way or is the only way to ODIN the official 4.3 OTA and lose root?

So the MF1 is the only 4.2.2 official I can downgrade to? I can't say I've ever had a phone like this - where the firmwares are such a pain. I have downloaded the 1 click to MF1. Is the leaked 4.2.2 comparable to the official 4.2.2? I ask since the leaked 4.3 has that annoying account loss issue that I would HOPE the official 4.3 does not have.
I'm guessing if they're comparable in terms of stability and usability then that's what I'll do. I just wanted feedback before I go and flash something. I already made that mistake with the leaked 4.3 update.

Need help for XT1052 (Moto X 1st gen)

Hi everyone,
I'm using XT1052 (Moto X 1st gen). I'd briefly explain my problem here hoping to get some help. I was using stock Android 4.4.4 which I rooted and installed CM12.1 a month ago. Then when Motorola started soak test, I switched back to stock using RSD Lite and installed soak test OTA which was draining battery heavily so I decided to go back to CM12.1 which I did after a couple of days. Now I'm running CM12.1 but when I try to flash stock Android 4.4.4 using RSD Lite it won't let me do that and giving me the error. I think the soak test did all this.
Is there a way to go back to stock 4.4.4 with the current bootloader?
Can anyone suggest a way out?
No you have to downgrade the bootloader which can be done and there is threads about how to do it, but youre taking a risk of bricking doing thus but it can be safe if done to 100% Right. You're right it was the soak test because it also updated your bootloader to lollipop. Too bad, I waited for a developer to release a official lollipop with a kit kat bootloader so I can easily flash back to kit kat. Let me guess your battery drain was cell standby? I have same problem, but if you turn off carrier internet, it goes away and you actually get better battery life. But if you need cell internet always on, kit kat is best option and you will have to do the risky flash and downgrade the bootloader. If your interested in the lollipop rom that doesn't update the bootloader, it's for the xt1053 model.

Thank you for your reply. Can you give me any link to that thread which contains info. on how can I downgrade my bootloader?
I most of the times use WiFi but when I'm out I use 3g but that's not always on. Once sync has been done, I usually turn it off.
Basically I want to go back to stock 4.4.4 and then be able to install official 5.1. I don't mind bricking my device as my moto is almost 2 years old and soon 3rd gen will be out. If something goes wrong I'll buy a 3rd gen. For now I have a standby basic phone.
Here's the link but why don't you just flash the stock lollipop from the soak test? Why even worry about the downgrade if you want lollipop anyways? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3058202

I want that but basically I don't know where to get the stock lollipop from soak test? I read somewhere that soak test ota zip is not the complete version. It must be installed on the original 4.4.4 ROM. Can you guide me how do I get back to stock and where will I get that soak test file and shall I flash it using RSD Lite? Please reply as I am free this evening and quick response will be really appreciated.
