For some context, he's referring to the nokia pro cam app. This actually takes fiddling to acquire, use of proxy servers and what not to download. But it does provide manual focus and a shutter speed as long as 4s on a budget device. The best the Z1 can manage is 0.8s.
How well it works on said device is up to debate. 520, 620 are a bit underpowered. 720 and up from what i can tell is ok. Reviews as to performance on lower end devices are hard to come by, mostly people bragging they got it on their phone bla bla. It's not going to make a low end camera perform like a high end one. You will still get low end shots but the ease of use is welcome.
The only use i can see for manual focus is at night when its hard to auto focus or macro shots.
The nokia pro cam app is excellent otherwise in terms of ease of use. Everything you would ever want.

Because there is a thing called Google play store, and you can easily download the camera app you want to get these functionality and Lumia doesn't, so they have to make one themselves...
Show me an app that can do manual focusing and set the shutter speed please

ya friend what you said is correct...but nokia 1020 is like a dslr and z1 is like a digital cam, which 1 do you prefer? im not telling z1 is bad,but would be very happy if sony could provide manual controls like shutter speed and focus control....becacouse they let you take stunning images,i hope u understood what i meant...and theres no camera app in play store that provides manual focus ,only we can do is touch to focus, focus lock and infinity focus ec-camera fv-5...and thank you
1020 or Z1 ? The pricing for the 1020 in India is ridiculous, more expensive than the note 3 (!)..lol
Depends what your priorities are. People do not choose a phone based on just the camera. There are a number of other factors that come into play as well. At the flagship level i'd prefer the Z1. As the gap is closer.
At the Rs.15-18k level nothing to beat the 720 for camera. But you have to compromise on OS. The low to mid range lumias are vfm, every one of them has a real GPS and is dual band wifi with the exception of 720. Hardware wise they are better than android.
Just have to accept that WP is more limited than android for now. A year or two later the ecosystem will be more mature. For now its just the basics : phone, camera, internet, media player, offline maps. Some games. Anything more is pushing it.
What i would like to see is the ability to set a custom WB, no camera phone offers that as yet.

I'll start this off by saying I am new to this phone. I currently use this and a galaxy note 2, but for all purposes this has been my daily driver. I have been very pleased with nearly every aspect of it, but there is one small thing that has been driving me up the wall (maybe it exists but I'm simply missing it??):
Why is there no macro mode??!!??
I like to take macro shots, and because of this I cannot get nearly as close as I can on pretty much any other phone I've owned. For some reason it will not focus extremely close.
I'm so confused as to why they left this out.. The intelligent auto does next to nothing to fix it. You can get in relatively close, but not macro close. Any other fixes other than using a different camera app (if that would even fix the issue)?
I use the Lenovo app, its great and there is a macro mode.

You cannot get as close as you can with most cameras
I tested with my note 2, and others (which were able to get much closer)...
It just won't focus properly
i get good macro shots can you upload a macro shot to see what are you talking about
You can try all the applications that you want, simply won't focus under 10-12 cm.
I don't know why, but it is so.
Touch focus is better for me, Touch the object you want and your phone will try to focus
But, don't get too close, 8-12cm is the normal range for phone to take very sharp macro photos.
If you want to get closer, don't forget that crop "Digital Zoom" function, Yes it reduce the quality, but you can make better composition.

That is what I use, touch focus,..
Imo that isn't a real macro then
I mean a macro, not just a "fairly course picture"

Imo for macro shot Xperia S is better than Xperia Z (I have both). With XS I can focus properly at 5-6 cm.
Not being nasty in any way, but lets remember, this is only a phone. The camera is a convenience, not a luxury. If you want great macro shots or the like then you need to be looking to either hit up a DSLR or like me head for the oldschool SLRs.

Haven't had the issue with pretty much any other phone I've owned though
I'm just not really sure why it is like this.
This kind of answer isn't really helpful though in any way.
Sony are praised for their cameras, yet they leave out a basic feature that my note 2 has, and my older x10 had.
Just seems strange

I appreciate it is a strange decision, but then so was the choice to release the add on lense things.Honestly, manufactures do slip up, and I would guess this was one of those times. It's a shame, aside from the battery bug issue and the one you are on about, the phone is near perfection.
Right.. We actually need manual focus like in the pro camera app from Nokia.. And it's now impossible since I've used manual focus on a gingerbread LG phone before.. Tried Porting the app, get fc moments after the ui shows

Why you dont shoot from 10-12 cm with goog focus and next go to crop the image with edithor - stock or something from the market.Or just use digital zoom- it is actualy real time croping. The picture is 13 mpx and have many many pixels to zoom/crop.

wery glad for you, but we're talking about other things here
Have to generally agree with roaringhere here, for a phone the low light performance/quality is not as bad as people keep on making out, if you take control from the phone auto mode!!! The biggest problem is the Sony selecting a very high ISO, so set this manually with a shutter you can hand hold and you will be a lot better off.
Seriously get any point and shoot or other phone and run it at the same ISO's and see how crap they are also, even some DSLR's running ISO's of 1600 look pretty crap.
Seen it time and time again people bagging the camera in low light, comparing it to others, and yeah they definitely look different, and mostly worse on the Sony, but they are comparing ISO 1600 vs ISO 400...
Here is an untouched hand held ISO 8000 fireworks mode using the Sony Xperia Z, no photoshop here http://www.flickr.com/photos/dan-wilson/9921483725/ I can tell you now you would struggle to find a point and shoot sensor or smaller that produces a better hand held shot at 1 second exposure with an 8000 ISO. I can tell you now I wouldn't even dream of using this ISO with my Canon 7D

My point exactly! Thanks...
I feel that the hardware is not to be blamed here...
The software here is at fault..
The superior auto mode is not so superior in its job(it's ok if you want to capture something real-quick)... But if you want the best from the hardware you'll have to turn to manual controls...(Camera FV-5 is the best app I know for that)
Jpeg compression is just too much here...thus we can see the lack of detail in some photos(macro)
To get the best of the camera,My suggestions are as follows :-
If you like the stock camera app... 1)Turn off superior auto mode... Switch to manual mode
2) set the ISO at 200 (max) for daylight photography,,,,400 for twilight
3) HDR off
4) metering mode set to average
And if you still want better results:
1) install Camera FV-5 (full version support developer )
2) go to settings -> photo encoding settings -> file format -> set it to PNG ( it takes some seriously huge pics (15 mb..:-o) )
3) now apply all the manual controls mentioned above
If you think what difference does the above methods do to the quality of the photos... Take a photo with normal method (superior auto) and then manual method... And then compare..
If you feel that I've helped you in anyway, please hit the thank button

I have to agree that sony is doing crap with the software and maybe the hardware.
Usually camera in a phone should be aim and shoot, and should deliver the best results in a quick way.
Not all costumers know photography, and they don't want to stay in the settings for a few minutes before taking a photo.
I am a photographer and i couldn't ever take a nice and quick photo for my 11 months daughter with this phone.

Dude just because you own a Canon 5D doesn't make you a photographer, just means that you have money to buy one, a camera and lenses does not make the photographer. So stop with the mine is bigger than yours crap.
You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, if you continue to bag the phone in low light. You clearly have no idea about image sensors and how they work, what causes image noise in a photo, why ISO effects are different per device based on the image sensor size.
The photo I show on my website, is not a wow shot to look at, but if you take into account all the elements then it actually is, 1 second exposure hand held, ISO 8000 on a tiny sensor. I am sure you will not be able to hand hold a low light shot for one second with your 5D and have it as sharp as the phone shot I show.
Come on guys really stop talking crap and just compare apples with apples, not apples with cars. I challenge any of you to find a single point and shoot and take pictures with the phone and with the camera with as similar settings as you possibly can then compare how good or bad they are, and really for a phone with a sensor much smaller than most of the point and shoot cameras the zperia z is right up there, the Sony auto modes (software is crap) at making the best decisions, and I would say any Sony P&S with superior auto mode is in the same boat.

Guys these are two shots I took with the new firmware... not too bad I guess
This is @1000 iso... noise level is pretty good and white balance is better than earlier
This is in daylight with plenty of details
I think camera-quality is just where you can realistically expect it.
About on par or better than cheap compacts with same sensor-size, but as you can expect it can´t compete with high-end compacts like Canon G-Series, Panasonic LX, Olympus XZ or similar (I don´t want to mention Sony RX100(II) of course which is far ahead).
On the positive side is relatively low NR of luminance-noise which leaves most fine detail intact, virtually no ugly chroma-noise without the colors being washed out up to the highest sensitivities and quite low contrast which leads to quite good DR for a phone-camera (and of course also doesn´t hide the noise by clipping to black like many other phones)
Negative is mostly the camera-app, unfortunately most other phones aren´t better here as well:
The so called "Manual" mode is a joke, on a real camera this would qualify as P-Mode as most, but certainly not M.
Why are the even give you the chance to adjust ISO while not telling you the shutter-speed the camera will use is beyond me. It is not useful to set ISO yourself when you don´t know which shutter-speed you well get. Of course a real shutter-priority-mode would be much better, but I guess that´s to much to ask.
Superior-Auto is too limiting. I know this mode is meant for point&shoot, but I think the possibility to choose the AR you like wouldn´t be to overwhelming for beginners. And of course that you can only start superior-auto from the lockscreen or with the camera-button also is very stupid.
Besides the scene-recognition of superior-auto is also a bit hit&miss.
Also sharpening can be somewhat high, which emphasizes noise and can destroy fine detail.
Hi.
I've got an offer to buy a 1 month old Nokia 8 for 250 euro/300 dollars.
I've been looking at the Nokia 7 plus which is about 390 euro/460 dollar in my country.
I've got a Iphone 7 as it is, but i really wanna go back to Android now that i finally have the option and my all time favorite phone is Nexus 1, so i want so close to stock android as possible.
The biggest fear i've got is the camera. I don't want anything worse then i got today. Would you say it's worse/same/better?
Which one would you buy if you had the chance?
Thanks in advance!
Look at the specs. You will see the Nokia 8 much better than 7th.
NOKIA 8 is one of the most underrated telefon, SD 835 and 250 € it's a great deal.

Depends on what you want the phone for... For me I like to try new new new, Android never my main phone, just a playground, I want to try AOSP, I like to try latest Android... My main phone is iPhone.
At the moment Nokia is not keeping up to their promise, they're busy with launching more models and Nokia 8 is not getting their May Security Patch yet, and it's not Project Treble... Camera also has no Pro Manual mode yet.
So if you want a long lasting software patching phone I suppose any of their new Android One is better...
2 days ago I was so tempted to sell off my 6 months old Nokia 8 to replace with Mi Mix 2s because of Android P beta preview. Even my Mi 5 running LineAge OS has May Security Patch!
Updated: just tried out Google camera (as others suggested) on Nokia 8, it crash my phone when I turn on Motion option, and HDR set to High quality isn't great, mainly just over exposed compared to Medium (Default).

Premium feel is when the camera works fluently without mods. Even with mods the camera is mediocre and can't compete with any flagships past few years.

You're either a hater or you haven't held a Nokia 8 in your hands that uses Google Camera.
The results I get with this thing are better than most of the recent flagships and almost matches the images you can get on a Pixel 2.
Pls refrain from posting bull$h!t and confusing the OP. Thx.
I'm neither of what you accuse. I'm just not giving false hope for OP coming from iPhone 7 that Nokia 8 camera is on par with competition.

You can get a little better results with mods of course, but it won't fix the limitations of that Sony sensor. It's still slow and mediocre in low light / indoors.

The difference is day and night. It's not "a little better". Low light as well - drastically different than the default camera app processing.
Pls end your nonsense. It's HMD's fault that they screwed up the camera app. But this is a huge and significant mod that breathes new life into this phone's camera capabilities.
The camera really is bad , i have the nokia 8 and i agree
But also agree that with google camera it works a thousand times better and it has no problem matching the quality of the photos of iphone 7
Regarding to everything else , nokia 8 is better in everything , snapdragon 835 is just fabulous , ram management is also good
Batttery life , power and everything else is close to the iphone 7 , if you want to go back to android , sell iph7 , win big money and buy nokia 8 , is the best choice

Installing another manufacturer's algorithms won't fix the slow shutter speed and low light capabilities of the 1.12 um sensor.
Every android phone that i've tried has some pluses and minuses in google camera app mods. Usually low light images are better but that's it, then you might experience glare in day shots or something else.. oh and you lose all the gimmicks that the oem has put on its software/hardware (nokia 8 dual lens for example and ozo sound in video).
So it's a hit or miss.. Especially when there are no apks that are optimized for nokia 8.
And believe me, i would love to be wrong in this, but in this current state the camera is mediocre.. with or without mods. I hope nokia would use that second lens to improve low light..

Agree, I spend more money (on non Chinese brands) because of Nokia's quality, it's losing the purpose of pay a premium for Zeiss Lens and not able to benefit the Dual or PIP features in the stock app. The lens (and it's features) and USB 3 was the only reason Nokia worth the premium for, else it is just a Mi 6.

Is there a reason why there aren't any custom ROMs here for Nokia devices?

I think the bootloader can't be unlocked yet.

Thing is, the need for unlocking of bootloader needs to be pushed to the OEM. Something like filing a petition or something. So that we can show the responsible person..
Bought this phone yesterday. I'm new to Samsung. I had seen and read a lot of reviews and articles, and all were very positive about the camera, but in my experience its very disappointing. Especially the front facing camera. It's always blurry, and what is up with all that smoothing out??? Even when it's off it just does the same. I haven't changed any special settings. After looking for a solution I see that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Is this just a question of taste, or is there really something "broken" at the moment with this camera?? I'm really considiring returning this phone. 1000€ and this is the picture quality I get?
I paid considerably less than 1000€ a week after launch, I think I'd return it if I paid that much. I've had some good photos from the camera and also less impressive ones, it seems Pro mode is the place to be.
Yes the selfie cam sucks. Too much post processing causing the smoothing effect. I'm not an Instagram model, I don't need to look airbrushed.
The rear shooters though can produce some really nice pics.
It's the software that causes issues. The hardware is solid.
The other option is to download GCam which uses Google's HDR Processing from the Pixel devices. It produces really nice photos. Some GCam builds have Night Sight working as well.
You might find this link useful for installing GCam, it seems to be a bit hit and miss, the camera works for a little while and then just force closes every time it's launched.

Welcome to the esteemed club of Note 9 owners! unfortunately a lot of us are already having this issue and understand exactly how you feel! there is a thread on here already about this: see below
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/help/galaxy-note-9-camera-sharp-t3835459
and trust me its annoying having paid so much for this device and then get this rubbish picture quality!.... and I bet you any money Samsung folks read these forums so whether its a case of "cant be bothered" or "working on it", no one knows!
I hear the point about Gcam download as an option but I really feel I should not need to download additional software to make up for Samsung's lapses. We buy this device cos we love it and desperately want it to work, guess Samsung makes them only to get our money... not rocket science who the real losers are !

Tbh I also paid far less. But still, one expects to get a decent camera for this price and all that marketing jibberjabber. How come all big YouTube tech reviewers praise this camera ?! Money makes them dance

Now if these problems can be fixed with future updates that would be great, but is there communication from Samsung about this? And can this be fixed with (near) future updates.

So you don't have any third party apps on your device?
I'm about to return my phone and get my money back.. But i'm still doubting. .. Can these problems be fixed with future updates? Can we expect a good stock camera app in the near future?

The only likely upgrade would be Samsung's take on Night sight, I wouldn't expect any miracles.
Guys, hey, HW is solid as someone said, i also have some issues with cam quality, i thing that we must wait till we have pie update and then see what changes. Like im working with audio eq and for example player FIIOX5 III sounds quite bad at beggining, but later firmware updates makes it much better. So i thing - wait for software update and then decide to do something with it or ask for refound.

It's been hit and miss too for me, coming from a Pixel 2 XL.
Things are considerably better since I use the Arnova's Gcam port (better than my Pixel 2 XL in fact), and it made me realize Samsung's app/post-processing is the issue, not the Note 9 camera/sensor
Samsung needs to go back to the drawing board and do something about that agressive, over the top post-processing. Like I said, Gcam produces way better, more natural looking like pics, and most of all, they're not blurry (faster shutter time with Gcam maybe?)

Have you tried the one via official XDA

Is there difference with the Arnova port?

More features like Advanced HDR+ and Night Sight are working for me with Arnova's builds vs the one you just posted.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-arnova8G2/
Can you post some sample pics? This phone is consistently rated as one of the top cameras on the market and I have to say that I'm not disappointed. In good conditions it's hard to say that it's any worse than my DLSR with expensive lenses. Night shots are excellent too. If your rear camera is as bad as you claim, perhaps there is a hardware problem? The front camera does apply a lot of post processing (which I'm not a fan of either) but you can turn most of it off.
TLDR: either you have an actual hardware problem or insanely high expectations, the camera on this phone is just about the best on the market. When I say that it comes close to my DSLR, I'm not kidding.

I added a screenshot. Do you install the first one or the second one?
Edit: the first one force closes every time, and the second one doesn't have all options it seems, like night vision en HDR+

That's the one you want: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.3d_TlnNeun_2.apk
If it force-closes on launch, that's because it was installed over an older version, just clear data + cache and relaunch, it will work
Reading some of these comments . . . The stock camera app takes fantastic looking pictures IF the subject is not moving. Try taking a picture of your kid or pet doing anything BUT standing still and the photo is a blurred mess. Wish the shutter speed was faster smh not holding my breath on Samsung fixing it thru an update

Use Pro mode if you want to be able to specify your shutter speed, I find the raw's are pretty good once they've had some basic touch-ups.
