By now everyone knows the Droid X has an encrypted bootloader that is going to take a serious effort by the Android Developers to crack so we can load custom Rom's. What needs to be done is get Droid X phones into the hands of these developers so they can get to work. Pete(Bugless Beast) won the AllDroid contest so he has one and Birdman collected enough donations in just over a day to get a Droid X that he will have on 7/17. That's a start but I'd like for the Android community to pull together and lets get some donations to the developers, any amount helps $1, $2, $5 whatever the amount...skip the morning Dunkin Donuts, bagel, etc for one day and it will add up fast. I can continue to update this thread with new developers that can help us all by working on the Droid X as enough donations are collected so they can purchase their own phones. The developers create all the Roms, themes, etc for the rooting community to enjoy...lets make it a little easier for them to continue this development on all the new Android phones as they come to market.
I sent a few messages out to some developing teams and the first response back was from Cyanogen that the person he recommends is Koush. Once he has enough donations I can list another developer for us to donate to and help the rooting/unlocking cause.
Thanks to the Android community Koush should have a Droid X by Saturday to start hacking at that bootloader, I received numerous requests that a donation link be setup for ChevyNo1. I contacted Chevy to see if he was interested in helping hack the Droid X which he was. Here is a direct link for donations for him, you can check the link out over at his forums as well: http://ssandroid.com/
This is our chance, so lets start donating to ChevyNo1 for a Droid X, please put a note that the donation is for a DroidX: http://bit.ly/awetS5
If anyone would like to recommend a development team or developer let me know. Please spread the word, also you can let me know other Forums to post the same message.
A BIG THANKS TO BIRDMAN FOR ROOTING THE DROIDX
Man now you have me thinking about how much I miss Dunkin Donuts!! Sending you my donation tonight!! Good luck Dev's!
i saw what koush did with an incredible in a short period of time, donating to koush is def. a great idea, i will as soon as i can.
Just sent Koush $20
Whats the chance of Koush really being able to do anything? was he able to do with the milestone?

I don't believe Koush has a Milestone. The idea of my post is to get Droid X phones into the developers hands as quickly as possible, just so everyone knows these donations are not going to me but directly to the developer and as of right now that is Koush. When enough people donate I can list another developer, if anyone has someone in mind please post it up and I can contact them to see if they want to develop on the Droid X. Someone asked Cyanogen about cracking the Droid X bootloader, his response was everything can be be hacked.

Everything CAN be hacked, but that is irrelevant. Everyone knows there's no such thing as an uncrackable encryption algorithm and such, the question is, can it be done in a reasonable amount of time or will it get cracked three years after its release when no one has one anymore, lol

I would like to know of something that Koush has hacked that is worth something, I feel that I am investing in something that I have no idea of the work he has done. Not only that, you have 7 posts on XDA..........I am concerned but interested in this.

Koush is responsible for Clockwork Recovery, which I believe (Droid X is my first Android phone) is an indispensable program when it comes to messing with custom roms.
Riztnack when I asked Cyanogen who on Team Douche would be the one that he recommends to try to hack the Droid X, his response was Koush. I think Cyanogen and Team Douche has hacked plenty of devices and provided alot to the Android community. I would like to see someone from Team Unrevoked working on the Droid X as well as others, by banding together with small donations we can make this happen.
I always use the same name on any Forum/Twitter, I am active for the most part on DroidForums but some moderators/people are rubbing me the wrong way lately. Type FSRBIKER into Google, you can see I am involved in plenty of places....my Ebay name is Xterra so you can check that as well.
BTW I don't have a Droid X, I might if it can be hacked but I did donate and will to each developer that is working on it.

I am simply trying to get the ball rolling and presented an organized way of helping to get the Droid X into the developers hands as fast as possible. UPDATE (14th June 2011):
We are now over the 10,000 mark.
I have now spoken with Motorola and gotten confirmation that Motorola plan to unlock every device that will get an update in the second half of this year. This will include maintenance & firmware updates, but is still subject to Carrier approval.
The promising sign is that Verizon has already allowed Motorola to unlock a device on their network, the Xoom, which utilizes the unlockable/re-lockable model that Motorola intends on using across their devices.
I'm still looking to work with Motorola in the coming months to help see if we can make this a smooth process for Motorola and the community.
You can read the article here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/06/14/an-u...witter&utm_campaign=Feed:+ausdroid+(Ausdroid)
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
UPDATE (26th April 2011):
We are now at ~8,700 mark.
Motorola has now responded to me, stating that they are looking at unlocking bootloaders across their devices late 2011.
The article for the story can be found here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/04/26/the-little-aussie-taking-on-motorola-u-s/#more-8184
We're still seeking clarity around whether this will be for current devices or only future devices.
I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of everyone here. You guys and girls have been a huge support and help me turn this snowball into a wrecking ball.
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
Previous Update (4th April 2011):
We are now at ~7600 mark.
We're starting to slow down from our initial boom, so I have now set up a Facebook page to see if we can wrangle in some supporters that don't use Twitter or XDA.
I will need your help getting this out there. So share the facebook page where you can.
I'm also looking to see if anyone is interested in helping me Moderate the page. Please PM if you are.

Hi All,
I have created a Groubal (online petition) to get a response from Motorola on it's bootloader policy.
>>This petition started for the Atrix, but I made sure that it was for Motorola's overall Bootloader Policy. I have reached 200 signatures in 2 weeks, but now believe it's time to expand this out of the Atrix space and into the larger Motorola Dev community.
Ok guys, we now have nearly 800 signatures, nearly 500 in one night alone.
Keep up the great work everyone, this wouldn't be going anywhere without your support.

It would be even better if we could get XDA to post it as an announcement across all the forums, but unfortunately I don't know any of the administrators well enough to do it.
If you want to champion that for us, that would be greatly appreciate. I'm starting to find myself spread to thin on this one.

Just sent this tip to Engadget.com
Please shed some light on the petition by the Android user community requesting that Motorola to unlock the bootloaders on their Droid phones. Smartphones are not just phones that can browse the web, they are mobile computing devices that can make phone calls.
We pay a large sum of money to own these mobile computing devices but we are not able to modify the operating system like any other personal computer that each of us own.

Hi all,
This is my first post, although I have been following the group for a long time. My post is motivated by the observation that a massive imbalance exists, particularily in the Legend development community.
There is a huge mass of non-contributing users badgering a small group of hard-working developers, whilst free-loading off the many hours they spend trying to improve the Legend for all of us. (BTW - I'm not pointing any fingers that don't equally apply to myself!) The value of the hours they are putting in is huge, and the return amounts only to the occational humble click of a thanks button.
I have written to the XDA owners and proposed that they implement a system whereby users can donate to a specific thread, and that each month the proceeds of thoses donations are distributed to posters according to the distribution of new "thanks" clicks to them. Unfortunately I have not heard anything in reply, so in the meantime I propose that we start here in the Legend development forum in a less systematic way.
For example; all of us eagerly following ogo2's thread on his Alpha rom should support how we can. We have all heard BlaYO's hesitance to get too involved in that he needs another Legend to do development work on, as he can't render his own out of service for days on end. Absolutely fair point. I would suggest that all active developers in here create a donation account somewhere so that the rest of us ungrateful, free-loading scavengers (again, myself included, and meant in the most positive way! ) can contribute.
Let's get BlaYO a second development Legend, or ogo2 some resources on Linux compilation etc. It's the least we can do, even if we are just selfishly offering to help them, help us
It would not take much, and I am quite certain that anyone who can afford a Legend can also afford to donate $10-20 now and then. What a small price to pay for all the hours that our devs spend working to bring all of us the latest and greatest. Let's give something back!
There were a bunch of users that actually donated to my PayPal account (a few months ago I didn't believe this could happen by the way).
I'd personally object to such a system for various reasons, the main one being complication of something which is a pretty simple in fact: You like the work of someone, you donate (or buy).
Moreover, there are a few CM developers whose work on their device (which happens to use an msm7227 chipset) directly influences the Legend too and therefore my work as well. They are not active in the Legend forum though.
So what I basically want to say: There's a lot of work going on – not hours but weeks – which you might never see because these almost unmoderated boards here are full of you-name-it and every CM developer I know pretty much dislikes XDA for that very reason.
You don't see us (40+ developers) working, but that doesn't mean we aren't.
Edit:
Ah, and by the way, I've been busy too, so tiwlan on 2.6.35 is almost finished.

By the way, what was modified in the kernel source so the tiwlan didn't compile normaly?

Hmmm... OK, I get that my proposal could have some shortcomings, however the intent is good. It's great to hear that users donated to your Paypal, Ali Ba, perhaps other devs should just publish Paypal details too, and users can direct donations to where they feel they are most deserved?
It is not meant to be fair compensation for the numerous hours spent, as the basic principles of community development should still be the driving force. It could, however, be a token of appreciation from those unable to contribute in any other way.
I can't help but feel that there would be more devs involved with more and faster progress as a consequence, if only there was a little reward in there too. Surely that would be in everybodies interest.
In any event, I offer my thanks to all the devs here, and I would be happy to back that up with a contribution, should you decide to go that way

I was working on getting wl12xx driver working with 2.6.32 kernel but I didn't succeed yet. Is there a reason not to switch to wl12xx driver instead? It also provides soft AP support int the same driver.
Regarding donations, it would be nice if I could donate you via Google checkout.
Thanks.
Yea leave Blay0 alone man, He's getting enough hassle on the Alpha thread as it is! people say they'd like to help then just request more things like a2sd,overclocked kernel etc.If you know anything about linux try helping by trying to build drivers for the last 2 bits (i.e Bluetooth, wifi)
I must say also that there were individuals who offered me donations which I respectfully refused and instead apoint those guys to their nearest charity. I'm not doing this for money (I make money doing other things) I'm just doing it coz I like to know how things work and I always like to learn new things. So if I become bored those donations definitely won't convince me to keep on doing it.
Don't you guys ever think that I'm doing all this for you! Noooope! I'm doing it for me and my own satisfaction. Yes, that's right I'm actualy a selfish, egoistic basterd but in a process of achieving my own goals (which are also inspired by some of your suggestions) I'm really happy if someone else learn something from me. They are few but it doesn't matter... they will definitelly pass on their knowledge and that's important coz I believe knowledge is universal and must be available to anyone willing to accept it and you cannot charge for that.
Don't kidd yourselves, this Legend thingie will be among us at most for another year and then it will get its successors and its community will become even smaller and eventually it will be disbanded and some of us will find new projects, learnig new thing and again passing on all the gained knowledge.

A whole year is an optimistic approach
The main problem in the development of the HTC Legend is the device itself. It's a rare phone, and pretty much a very small group of people is using it. That also makes the group of talented developers thinner. Look at the Hero or SGS forums topic/post count. Sure - most of them are retarded, and previously answered questions, but still folks in the dev section are coding some crazy and amazing stuff. That's because those devices where popular and successful. The HTC Legend was ment to be the successor of the HTC Hero, but this ain't gonna happen. Nobody will remember this phone in a year or two. That's of course HTCs fault, not ours.
Also mentioning all the request, demands and stupid questions in the dev forum - this forum is not that bad
Go check the Nexus S section. For example the NexusSense topic (my girlfriend got a Nexus so I'm somewhat interested). Now that's pure fukcin massacre out there
Greets!

Agreed, I thought Legend was a kickass sucessor, but very few people actually bought it...I've deserted to Desire S, but I think that's a very similar case so far anyways...
But back on topic: The thing is, everyone has an interest in what he's doing and unless he has a gain from that work he wouldn't be doing it But the idea of donating is noble ofcourse
Let's support our developers by not asking stupid and obvious questions, using search button, hitting that freakin' "thanks" button as often as we can, and most importantly by using our own brains to gain even more from their work

***UPDATE (8/25/11): This donation thread/link is now to help get the device for DJRBliss. If he is able to achieve root, he plans on keeping the device, so no funds will be returned. However, he has agreed to resell, and return money based on the percentage of the original donation- IF someone else achieves root in an unrelated effort.
Please donate with the expectation to NOT get any money back, and get ROOT instead! Again, nothing can be promised!
www.KrazyKrivda.com - Donate link and our root attempts.***
I am starting to consider taking a few extra risks and try to get this phone rooted, but since I need a reliable device for work Im considering an extra phone to work on.
I may pu up a link and ask for a "temporary donation." I would use the money to purchase a new phone to work with. Once the phone is rooted, whether by me or someone else, I will resell the device on ebay, or through the community and return money to those who originally donated.
I will only be able to return money based on percentage. Ex. If you donate 100 for a 500 device (20%), and I resell device for only 300, you will only get 60 back. *I do not ask that anyone give 100, just as a for example.*
I think it best to do it this way because I cannot promise that your donation or contribution will lead to me rooting the D3.
Feedback welcome.

I have rooted other devices however I am in no way responsible for the method of rooting them. In terms of contribution to the android community thus far I have worked on and created a few themes, as well as some small modifications to the cm source code when I was using my original droid.
I openly admit I am not as skilled as many other developers out there however I am probably 1 of the most persistent 1s and tend not be able to drop something until what I want is accomplished. Feel free to ask anyone in the irc/forums.. I know I tend to get annoying ;-).

Well, I can contribute $200, because root for this device is very important to me. If the value of the phone goes beyond where it is right now due to the phone being rooted, you could totally keep the difference. However, if it gets bricked, well... it gets bricked. I understand that that's a possibility.
Out of curiosity... have you ever bricked a phone before?

Ha, no I have not, but I've always had recovery or an sbf in worst case scenarios.
To truly brick a phone is quite difficult, and once an sbf, root, or other means are out... chances are most "bricked" devices would be fully recoverable.
And assuming I do get a test phone.. I will keep it in box as long as possible, taking chances on current device. This way I may be able to return/or sell NIB decreasing chances of losing value.
This is not for me to make $$ off of... now if I do achieve root I doubt I would turn down monetary thank yous? ;-) *wishful thinking*

I can vouch for Krazy, not that it means much coming from me. But he knows what hes talking about and is the only guy ive seen actually actively trying to root this for everybody. Ive also used many of his themes on my droid . Good stuff.
rent is paid for this month so count me in with at least a $100.00 may be $200.00 if needed
I have an dev Atrix, and I can tell you a dev Droid 3 is most likely not going to help. What will work on the dev phone won't work on a retail phone. It mostly comes down to the boot process, and the signatures used to control things.
I can't say it is useless, but it will only really be useful in someone with deep knowledge of the ARM architecture, and who can disassemble code. Even then they would have to get pretty lucky.
Overall, only expect it to help after you have phone the right person, or group of people who can really dig deep, and are willing to put the time into it.
Edgan:
I am not looking into getting an actual unlocked dev phone, but a phone for me to test/develop on.
I do agree that the more that work on this, and the deeper we dig the greater are chances. I have heard good things about you and hope you can assist.
If I find someone that I feel will have better luck than me, and equal motivation.. AND willingness to the same terms I set fourth (temporary donation, and returning funds once root is achieved based on phones resale) I'd be delighted to pass this potential extra D3 into their hands (assuming the donators agree as well).
ALL:
This is a 0 profit venture for me, and a way I figure can reduce chance of bad investment for all those who DO donate. As soon as the D3 is rooted, it's resale will begin.
To reiterate, I am NOT the most skilled skilled, and I am not trying to trick anyone into give me ther money. I merely have the time, motivation, and dedication that will hopefully lead to this devices root status.

Too bad this isn't the X2 we are talking about. I am currently setting up my spare X2 as a gaming \ entertainment device for the household (meaning 2 year old and 1 year old). Seems like a waste of a "new" phone.
If I get a spare D3 than I would be more than happy to donate.
PS....didn't P3Droid get a D3?

I would be willing to send my D3 to a developer for vivisection IF (!!!) I was guaranteed that he/she could make the potential brick look good for Asurion.
PM me if you want to make preliminary arrangements.

I would have already wepayed you, but you never responded to my PM.
I just sent $400 with WePay to get KrazyKrivda a D3. I found one on eBay for 379.99. The goal on the WePay site is $500.
$100 to go people! Come on, let's make it happen
I was checking out the Regular Verizon S6's forums and I found that they already have a couple ROMs by the recognized developer, @scrosler. He is an amazing developer and is the developer of CleanROM. He said that he would make a ROM for the Edge variant of the device if people can donate/let him borrow a device since he does not own the phone. I use my phone daily so I cannot ship him out my device but I did make a $20 donation.
Yes! I just need someone to donate an S6 Edge or let me borrow one for week or 2. I prefer a donation but if some one lets me borrow theirs then donor has to pay shipping both ways. They would also expect to not see the device for at least 1 week. Also If your local to Fargo we could just meet up.

I donated as well. Would be awesome to have his ROM on another one of my devices.
I am sorry but this type of thread is not allowed.
Bounties are only for significant development milestones
Not get your favorite developer a device so he can be on the same device as you
If you want to donate to a developer to help him, please do so
Thank you for your understanding
