I find it very sad from Google that they have sent me 4 devices and all of them have defects in their screen. Not only stucj pixels, but also dust under the screen.
I uderstant that sometimes there are some of them with defects, but having defects on the 4 devices I have received...that's not serious at all.
One who was very excited about this device but is thinking about joining Apple, because at least they do not produce deviced with defects at all...
Sorry to hear that but I hope you understand that you may be the only person with this issue if it is true.

Please go get the perfect defect free apple. Also i'd blame lg not google. I doubt lg will be making the next nexus. My family has 3 n5's, no problems. Luck of the draw i guess. Lastly your post was a bit hard to understand.
I bet moto will be producing the next nexus since that's googles company. Which is too bad as well. I'd love to see a gnex2

I'd be amazed if samsung and google ever worked together again. I'm still hoping samsung switches to Tizen and it flops
Not the only one
You are not the only one for sure. I also have had some awful luck getting the "perfect" device:
1st: Dust particles in screen and no vibration
2nd: Sporadic working volume rocker and more dust under screen
3rd: More dust under screen then the screen started acting wonky (bad banding)
4th: 2 dead pixels in exact center of screen.
Finally the 5th seems to be alright. No dust issues or dead pixels. Vibration isn't great, but it does work so I am gonna see how this pans out.
I told the service people at Google how frustrated I was at the experience, but they said I can keep exchanging until it works out. I tried to even have them check the device before sending it out, but they can't do that. I also commented that every device was covered in dust on the screen protector and didn't look clean at all. Either way the 5th is ok and hopefully no major issues going forward. I think I might hold off in the future on early purchases though.

Well that's news to me, considering there are many reports of iPhone users with dust under their screen and dust under the camera lens creating obstructed pictures. But hey, if that's how you view them regardless of this readily available info, then maybe an iPhone is a good choice for you.
For the record I'm on my first and only Nexus 5 and no issues here.
It's true. The Quality of the Nexus 5 hardware is bad. So many people are complaining about thw bad quality, you aren't alone.

By all means, join Apple if you think/believe their devices are not defected at all. . Enjoy replacing the home button that always craps out on each of their devices they make after a few months of use.
At some point in time you will realize not everything is perfect and flawless. Once you do, you'll finally accept it and get over the idea of a "perfect" device. Oh and before you post anything again, be sure to read your post over again before confirming it. Got a few spelling mistakes.

Yeah, they just have antennagate, battery defects in the 5s and the 5 million+ they sent back to foxconn, coupled with shipping with paint missing on the aluminum rim, and iOS as a whole. Nope no defects there. http://www.macrumors.com/2013/04/22/apple-returns-5-8-million-defective-iphones-to-foxconn/.

Lets see, that covers 3G through 5s.... Just don't hold it wrong and all should be ok.
My problem is that I am studying in the US for a year and my Nexus 5 is in Spain. I am going to Spain for a few weeks for Christmas and I would like to have a good one, without defects, I think it is not hard no understand.
As I said, I can understant some defects, because it is a new device, its price...But I can not stant having to RMA 4 devices and waiting for the 5th because they do not do a good quality check and buy cheap screens to the chineese.
I expect to have a nice one when I get to the US again, because if not I will ask for the refund and will wait for a few months until I come back home...
They're all built in the same factory in china/korea as they like to say. I do understand you're frustration though no one wants such a great phone hindered by defects.

I think most people who get a defective unit complain... while most that don't have no reason to post that they rec'd a great product. I myself have a flawless one as well. Plus 5 of my friends...
I'm about to be on my third and my patience is starting to run thin. May keep the next one regardless and RMA direct with Asus. Scary that I'm actually expecting it to be faulty and hope its broken enough for RMA.

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Mine is 100% perfect. The couple of people that I know personally with N7's have no issues either. I'm starting to think there is a lot more fiction than fact in these forums.

Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.
Everything is great except looking on the centre of the left long side the screen is like half a mm lifted but don't mind it and wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know what to look for

After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

I'm sorry to say my second Nexus 7 despite initially looking good has now popped the left side of its glass and displayed a stuck green sub-pixel. I'm really disappointed as I think its a fantastic device apart from the poor QC. I may try and buy later if I see on this forum that ASUS have got there act together.
Good luck to all who are trying to get a decent unit.
Poor QC, overinflated expectations for a entry level device, or a newly registered shill poster.

Here is a thought... A crazy one I know but here you go....
Instead of constantly replacing a newly released device because of minor screen lift that does not effect normal use how about taking a chill pill, breathing in and out and relaxing?
Mine has screen lift and it still works great! Me? I will wait a few months and replace it once the flaw is fixed in manufacturing and there has been enough time to filter out all the flawed still in stock versions...
When I picked up my first one and it had screen lift, I was disappointed and angry. When I exchanged for a second one and it had screen lift and a non-functioning touch screen, I was just angry. When I picked up my third one with screen lift I just shrugged. Yesterday I picked up my fourth one with screen lift and a loudly popping speaker and I just laughed :silly:
There must be bad lots or something?
On my first unit I bought at staples and everyone I know local has no issues and no replacements. I have been and will keep looking for issues on them but so far so good.

I'll bet that what actually happens is you'll send yours in, and you'll receive a refurb with EXACTLY the same problem. But you're so Zen-like about the whole thing, you'll just smile and go through the process over and over and never lose your cool. I envy your calm.
Of course, you'll have to hope the defect is obvious immediately, because every time you connect a new device to your Google account (and granted, one should put a hard limit on how many defects one accepts before considering the product to be junk) you'll use up a Google Music activation. And we can only deactivate 10 devices in a year. A big deal? Maybe, if you go through freaking defective products like this trying to get one that works decently.
Oh, and that will be another device that shows up in your list in Google Play that you can't delete. You'll remove it from the menu, but it'll be sitting there, taunting you.
Oh, and maybe you open an ebook on the defective that's limited to 3 devices, and then you can't open the book on your new one. And maybe the "remove from device" option isn't there, so you have to go through Google to get things fixed. But hey, relax, right?
If you're happy to sit on a defective device for months with the hope that it'll be better fixed later, knock yourself out. For some of us, the Nexus 7 is a special device, being the only Nexus tablet, and we just want one without defects. This whole preachy routine really does get a bit old.

Here is a rational thought.
How about a device should not have a so called minor screen lift issue. That moves around when you touch you the screen. That when you pick up the device and hold it the damn thing feels like it is falling apart and about to simply break.
Only a fool would accept that and keep the device. It doesn't affect normal use? What are you smoking? A touch screen device with a defective screen doesn't effect normal use? So you're going to keep a bad crappy device for a couple of months because hell I don't know why. So everybody else should keep their as well.
These devices currently have a ton of QC issues. Fact. People will report and discuss them. The only trolls are the people that keep saying people reporting issues etc must be trolling.

Guess how many devices I have linked to my account? lol
Seven GNex phones and two N7s. I've returned 4 N7s but one of them had a broken touch screen so I couldn't actually set it up and on the other the screen lift was so bad that I didn't bother powering it up. Crazy stuff. I honestly don't know why I keep coming back to the Nexus brand after my recent experiences.
Here's an actual rational though.
Only a fool would fail to read and call someone out for something opposite of what they said.
CHILL OUT, COUNT TO 10 before you make yourself look like an idiot again. He never suggested you accept a flaw, he said that repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result is not the best idea. Obviously you want the device, but instead of complaining about it here, which will do absolutely freaking nothing, why not take a breath and waiting a week? Rapid fire returns sure haven't worked for you yet.
Yawn....
Every device has growing pains the the N7 is no different... Google botched the pre-orders and they have a manufacturing issue to correct...
I will TRY and make this simple...
Let say Google had 10 million produced before they correct the manufacturing process / defect.. Now lets say they sold 5 million... That leaves 5 million defective units still on shelves / in stock...
You can continue to exchange it until the cows come home and guess what? Your replacement is going to come from the defective (read: in stock) pile until the defect is corrected and the originally shipped (read: defective) units have been depleted...
Save yourself the headache, stress, tantrums and wait a few months for the issue to be resolved and the fixed units to become the in stock norm...
If the unit has an issue that prevents it from functioning then that's another matter... Slight screen raise is not one of those... Keep on replacing it and keep getting the same (read: originally manufactured defect) unit in the mail... It's your headache not mine and I'm not the one throwing a tantrum in an online forum..
I will wait a few months and exchange mine once Google has resolved the issue and the in stock tablets are that of the fixed variety...

- Battery life is terrible
Its a basic principle of statistic. Put a survey box in a restaurant, only angry people will fill it. When you say something is perfect, it asks for this answer : OK.
OK. Does not help progression, advancement or amelioration.
Besides, we are in the self-entitlement era.

But usually the first batch is made hastly, because they need to creato more stocks for the first day (even though weren't enought ) and have less quality controls

I've had my Nexus 4 since Thursday morning, everything is spot on. No weird yellow tint, no issues what so ever actually. Battery life is acceptable enough for me, it pulls a day with heavy use, beyond that I don't give a toss.
Other than that it runs everyone like a boss, silky smooth and everyone that's had a play with it so far has tried to jizz on it.
Phil
It's actually refreshing for a change to hear something positive about the phone from a user!
So I got my phone yesterday evening at 7pm from the UPS driver and of course it was the latest I had ever received a package!
Anyways, all I have to say is that getting a phone from the "second wave" seems to have been a great thing because I have had ZERO issues at all so far. Right away I looked over the entire phone for any cosmetic defects that have been reported and nothing was found wrong. The screen IMO is amazing and colors look perfect as well. There is NO yellow tint whatsoever and I even had my GF look at it to make sure. Battery is already better than my former Blaze 4G and that's saying something. This phone is definitely a fresh start from the touchwiz ui and made me realize that was really kiddish looking like IOS IMO. The camera takes pictures just fine although I am still trying to figure out all the features on it. The phone got pretty warm on initial start up when all of my apps were being installed from the Play store but after that, normal browsing and such did not make it any warmer than anything i have felt before in other phones. Finally, there is NO buzzing in my earpiece at all, and yes my hearing is good, this again I had my GF check too so I knew I was not crazy.
So honestly, I think that maybe the second wave was produced better or something I really don't know, but I encourage anyone to get this phone if they have been debating because of other peoples "issues". Thanks
That's great to hear. I also ordered a N4 from the second batch and I can't wait for it to be here. Nice review
Mine does rattle. Got it yesterday. But I could care less about that. Loving the phone so far. Just want to be able to order a bumper and get my best skins ever in so I don't worry so much about using it.

Grats on getting your phone; you're gonna love it.
I got mine a week after the initial ordering and my phone is perfect, so I don't know about any second waves or anything like that. There are always going to be phones with manufacturing-related defects; that's why they do exchanges. Don't get hung up on a few people who think their phones are s**t.

Yep, loving mine.
Coming from a s2 and then a s3 I had for 2 weeks.. The things I thought would bother me really don't.
I rooted to restor backups and I love vanilla Android, probably won't even do any rom'ing
I received my phone from the first batch and the only problem i have is that i cant put it down.

Second wave myself. No issues. I love this phone. Just thinking of how to customize the first page. I can't make it look too much like my old phone.

I got my 2 Nexus 4's yesterday. The one seems fine, but I have an issue with the 2nd one. During calls, the earpiece buzzes while making sounds. The earpiece does not make any sounds when it is off like a lot of people seem to report. This is strictly a problem during calls and it sounds like the speaker is blown. It does rattle a bit when I'm putting it on a table or whatnot, but that doesn't really bother me.
Called support yesterday, and they were supposed to send me an e-mail with instructions on sending this one back and getting a replacement, but haven't actually received anything from them.
I seem to have some kind of knack for getting bad phones from Google. I had ordered 2 Galaxy Nexus phones when they came out, and ended up getting a replacement for one of the phones because there was dust in the camera. The replacement had the wifi go out, so I had to get that one replaced. The third one actually had a similar buzzing issue with the earpiece but it wasn't as bad, and I was tired of dealing with them at that point, so I lived with it.

I get what you are saying, but he is still literally correct.
I'm sure he could care less, otherwise he wouldn't have an N4. If he cared less:
- he could have not bought the phone
- he could leave it at a bus stop and go on living
- etc. etc.
Now, I'm sure he could care a hell of a lot MORE about it, taking to the internet in fits of rage, driving to Mountain View and knocking on the front door and such. But still, he could also care less.
Just saying.
Received mine yesterday and it has zero flaw. I don't take the mini rattle as one as it comes from the camera (autofocus?) and all the phones I tested since learning that on this forum have it.
For those of you wondering if the bumper is worth 20 euros, it's definitely well made, perfectly fits the look of the phone and prevents the back from direct contact but... well, the phone has a perfect size for my hand and the bumper adds about 0.5 - 0.7 cm in width which makes it awkward to hold. I find myself removing it often when using my phone.
My 2 cents.

Does your phone have touch sensitive issue?
Most people that received the initial batch also had zero issues. It's basically just a couple squeaky wheels that make things seem worse than they actually are.

Edit: you would never believe it from the way it looks but I would say majority of the people who ordered on the 13th got the phone within the 3-5 business day quote. Just as an example.

I don't have any issues whatsoever from the 1st batch. The more you try to look for something to be wrong the higher the chance that something unnoticeable will begin to irritate you lol.
Zero issues with the first batch. But if these phones get better with each batch, imagine the 50th batch!

Just received my order of two 16GBs yesterday. The first one (for myself) has a black dot between the screen and the glass, right in the middle. I tried to live with it but its very distracting especially on a light background.
Today I unboxed the other one and it won't even turn on. Plugged it to the charger and the LED light kept flashing red.
I'm very disappointed with the QC of the N4. So much for fighting through orders and shipping

Sorry dude. People were so pleased when Google announced the price of this thing. I wish they had just given it a normal price and used the extra money to fix the thermal issues, screen issues, battery, etc. I haven't found any problems with mine yet but given the launch failure and all the issues, this may be my last nexus.

will they charge him restocking fee as mentioned in google play store under refunds?

Dang it Google!
I will probably do an RMA since the phone is awesome...when it works.
Where can I find the number to call Google?

I don't think price comes into factor with defects. I paid the same price as the OP and my phone has no defects and has been running flawlessly. And I am pretty sure if we all paid double, we still would be seeing the posts with defects, lol.

Of course the price is connected with quality check, but man, let the truth enlighten you: the number of posts regarding defects would be way smaller; take HTC for example (or iPhone, I AM IN NO WAY AN APPLE FANBOY, I'VE NEVER HAD ANY APPLE THING )

Yeah I agree if they had charged us an extra $150 each I think they could have done at least something to improve the quality and reduce defects. Of course, knowing Google they probably would have just given us the middle finger, kept the extra cash, and sent out defective products anyways.
Sad. But that's now my impression of Google.

Of course quality control affects price. QC can be very labor intensive($$$), from just auditing the boards and components at various levels of production, to scrap (throwing away defective product $$$) or rework (labor intensive $$$) of product with defects. I speak from experience here. No doubt QC suffered in order to offer the Nexus 4 at this price. Of course, it probably didn't suffer as much as it might have from other manufactures, as Google does not have to make money on the device itself as they can rake in the money from the Play store.
I mean, I love that I am able to purchase such a high end device for $299/349, but I think we really have to worry about what this will do to the rest of the Android ecosystem. Amazon has already been putting the hurt on everybody (other than Apple) in the tablet market with their Fire tablets (again, they can make money from the Amazon app store, and other content), and now Google is putting the Squeeze on everybody else with the Nexus 4, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10.
Competition is good for everybody, but if only Apple, Amazon and Google can make money due to owning the content stores, then that's a bad omen for the industry IMHO. But I digress.
You know I see everyone blaming Google when Google didn't make the hardware. They only did the software. I saw this coming when then announced LG was the hardware OEM. They have never been known for outstanding hardware.

Google was the supervisor of the whole project. Google selected LG. If you think the phone is perfect, Google deserves most of the credit. If you think it sucks, Google deserves much of the blame.

Have you tried charging it on a pc?
Plug it into USB port of computer and leave for half hour.
This happens on a few android devices when fully discharged and pc charging is the only way to do it sometimes.

I've got an rma out for mine for a similar issue, there's a black squiggly line going across my camera lens...seems like it's probably stuck between my camera lens and the glass. Not a huge deal, but definitely an annoyance to have to send it back, especially after unlocking and rooting it.

I'm inclined to believe that offering these Nexus devices at such a low price has resulted in quality control going out the window, as well as warranty. The Nexus 4 seems to have a lot of issues and the Nexus 7 has had its fair share as well.
I had a Nexus 7 and the first one I got had a washed out screen and the well known screen lift on the left side so I exchanged it and my second one only had screen lift as well but to a much lesser degree so I kept it. A couple months go by and I go to pick it up off my table, placing my thumb on that left side and the screen cracked from one side to the other, leaving the top portion unresponsive to touch. I called up both ASUS and Google and neither would do anything about it.
That experience and what I'm seeing here about the Nexus 4 has resulted in me losing faith in Nexus devices, which sucks because I loved the Galaxy Nexus and was really looking forward to this year's Nexus phone.

Agree completely. My nexus 7 had screen lift issues but I didn't care enough to RMA. Maybe I should have, though, because it completely died while charging last week, and now I have no choice but to RMA.
