[Q] Wifi battery drain with Wifi off - Moto X Q&A

I have a Nexus 5 and Moto X here for evaluation, and have been doing some testing for battery life. One test involved fully charging the phone, turning Wifi and bluetooth off, restarting the phone in safe mode and letting it sit idle for several hours. What I found really surprised me - Wifi was at the top of the list for battery use. I also got the same results on the Nexus 5. Any idea why this would be?

GPS via wifi if you have that option checked, if you don't have that option checked, then wifi is on and you don't know it, or something else is wrong.

Yeah its most likely that "use wifi even when its off" for location purposes.. i think you can turn it off in advanced wifi settings. Also what kind of results are you getting overall with battery life of n5 vs moto x?

I haven't managed to get through a whole day yet with the Nexus 5, but I typically have 30+ percent left on the X after 18 hours off charger. With the Nexus 5 my most recent screenshots are aft 15:09 hours off charger, 9% battery remaining, and 3:18 hours SOT. I haven't been keeping detailed records of the X since I haven't had any problems with battery life.
And yes, I do have "wifi location" and "scan while wifi off" enabled.

ah ok, seems like relatively consistent results all around - just got the moto x and I'm seeing similar battery life as you mentioned.. and what you get with your n5 is what I used to get with my n4, so sounds about right.. Thanks!
And having those enabled might have to do with why wifi is on your battery list.. not sure what would make it at the top though.

I forget what I was looking for (if anything) when I did that test with the posted screenshot, but the phone was untouched except for getting the screenshot. I also did another test on the N5 with the display on for 4+ hours and the phone otherwise untouched, and the battery only dropped to 75-80%. Granted, it was displaying a static image (all white), so there was little GPU activity associated with the SOT.

[Q] Is my battery broken?

Hey I have just bought HTC One 2 days ago. Compared to my old Sensation XE battery life completly sucks. I usually use phone without battery saver, on auto brightness and with Wi-Fi/3g turned on only on demand. Today 8 hours after unplugging phone from the charger I only have 26%. Screen was turned on for 2 hours and 45 minutes only and Wi-Fi worked for 3 hours and 46 mins. I might also say that I did not charge my One before usage to 100% as HTC advised. Was that very crucial? Do you think that phone might be broken or I should just give him time to settle baterry better.
That's sounds like what I get. I turn off mobile data when using WiFi and vice versa. I always use power saver unless I'm 3D gaming. Which is only on the weekends.
I've had mine for 3 months now.
I've seen people get 7:00 screen time on stock unrooted.
I think my battery's broken too. I can barely reach 3 hours of screen time. With 2 hours I get like 11 maybe 12 hours of on time. Something's wrong with our phones...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does anyone see a problem with my battery I have been on wifi the whole time with brightness at 20%.I never had this bad of a drain before and all I did was look at facebook for maybe 5 minutes.I also closed the app after I was done using it.

Your battery stats seem on par with me and the OP. Seems that only a select few phones get decent battery life.
My kernel (android os) has been in the 25-35% range,it has never been that high before.
battery life lousy
I get pretty horrible drain too. I charged it to nearly full around 7:30 last night. I took about 2 minutes of video, sent one text, and checked my email 3 times. After that I went to sleep and the phone sat idle. At 6:30 this morning, I'm down to 9%.

Wow, that's real bad.. When my phone is off during night maybe 7% is gone. Then again I'm rooted and use greenify aswell as battery doctor if that has any affect.
On screen time seems like my battery drains pretty fast too though. After 2 hours of music and surfing and watching videos I guess atleast 40% would be gone.
My battery life became horrible, too. My phones loses 4% per unused hour. No App seems to be responsible for that drain. Flightmode or powersaving mode ain't making a difference. I hope we'll find a solution for our drain.

@Racingmatt your power management services is on for quite a bit. do you have alarms.? i would bet that you either that maps location enabled or something of the sort. cause you also have NLPcollector on for around 40 minutes which is a bit much. also i would turn off GPS if your not actively using it.
@Rachorid how are you setting up your wifi? is it set to always be on? or set to turn off when screen off? you have alot of wifi wake. might be due to that. i know when i'm at home my wifi actively pings all devices connected which will force wake up my phone. yea its a bit annoying but i live with it. otherwise i just keep my phone plugged in.
if you both can get some SS of alarms i can give you a better idea. and when you SS the alarms make sure to click on the ones with the most wake lock so i can see the secondary screen that shows what the actual wakelock command is happening.

Here are the latest stats. As you can see many Google wakes.. removing Maps/Now/GMail/turning of Location (a few days ago) had no impact on my drain. The 2nd app on Partial Wakelocks was used actively.
I also disabled Wifi for about 2 hours.. no impact, too. Flightmode also had no impact (a few days ago).

The reason I didnt give you a alarm ss is because I didn't have any alarms when I went to the alarms section. I also had all locations services including GPS enabled but I just now disabled GPS but left network location enabled I'll give you a screenshot later so you can see the differences
I know exactly how you feel that's what happened to me,u was expecting so much from the battery and it turned out to be the worst..give ya some advice...3g drains the **** out of the battery ,so always jeep it off and turn it on only when you wanna use it...that way the battery will be acceptable... I had awesome battery life a month ago with Wifi always on, auto. brightness and every app on hourly sync. (I have my phone since 7th of march) Sometimes I didn't lost a percent over night (8 hours) and I just don't know what it could be because I didn't install another app and no app seems to be responsible for that stanby drain. My on-screen battery life is still good. It also doesn't matter which ROM or kernel I'm using.
Here is my latest stats after 12 hours with 5 minutes of GPS use (turned off when not using)and network location on all the time with 3g/4g on all the time(turns off after a period of inactivity) . I can't give you a alarm stat because I'm not rooted.
Lithium-Ion batteries used in today's smartphones need atleast 10 cycles to show optimum power
so hold on until 2 weeks then you will get the full performance
i get 2 days of battery on my HTC One (since i dont have internet on my Simcard)
its 2G connection and auto Brightness and switched bloatwares off
i use Android Revolution HD 12.2

with normal use 3.6%/h is pretty reasonable. how much screen on time was that including?

Unimpressive battery life.

Was expecting 10 hours of screen on time but was only able to get about 5hours
Things I've done(that gave 5hours screen on time)
Greenify(all apps greenified except whatsapp)
Gravitybox smart radio
Removed about all the bloatware I could find using titaniumbackup (including Google search, google plus, google now)
Disabled all auto-sync except for Gmail
Disabled x-reality
Disabled "scanning always available" (search for advanced wifi in settings)
Gravitybox
Stamina mode
Brightness about 20%
That's about it, tips or even a guide to improve this will be greatly appreciated.

If you just turn the phone on and watch videos for 10 hours, I'm sure you could do that. You can't look at reviews and think that their battery tests (which don't mimic real use) are gospel. I just had my first day with the Z3C with AT&T service. Long story short, I'm getting the same battery life on my Z3C that I had on my Razr Maxx HD. And that's with location reporting on and brightness at 75 or 80%. On my RMHD location reporting was off and brightness was around 50%. I took it off the charger at 6am, it's 8pm now and I'm at 63%. 2 hours SoT.
If this was my Moto X I'd be at 15% or less.

Yeah, I know that's where you got the 10 hours number from. However, typical "real life usage" doesn't mean having the screen on for 10 hours. For example, I listen to a lot of podcasts and music. If I didn't I could probably double my screen on time. Stuff runs in the background and uses power as well. Battery life isn't just screen on time.
did you have a SIM card inserted? I noticed they didn't have a SIM card in theirs. This may turn off the cellular antennas
The problem with these synthetic tests is its repeating the same thing over and over again. Things like caching start coming into play
They didnt have a sim in? Thats pretty much invalidates the 10 hours number for sure. Cell service always drains more battery than wifi.

He has the phone in ultra stamina mode. If you wanna turn your smartphone into a dumbphone and have it last a week go ahead. Im gonna get two days out of one charge. Probably around 4 or 5 hours SoT, along with 6 or 7 hours of listening to podcasts and/or music. 10 to 12 hours of actual usage over two days is pretty pimp in my book. Im plenty happy with that. Dont know what to tell you.

You'll be configuring the phone (installing new apps, blahblahblah, more CPU usage)
Try it out after a few days for your usage to settle down...

Well. I'm basing this off of the screenshot they posted (I don't even know what that screenshot is trying to show). They really didn't say in their article. You can see the "no SIM" icon at the top and they're on WiFi.
I doubt they ran the test with a SIM card and 4g/LTE, and then went through the trouble of taking the SIM out and enabling WiFi before taking the screenshot.
Regardless, the battery life is good enough for me. Best from a phone I've ever had.

Sony says you can get 1-2 days on a charge with no battery saving modes on, 3-4 days with stamina mode, and up to a week with ultra stamina mode. Dude is on day 6 in that screen shot, so draw your own conclusions there. Plus, like another poster said, he's not on 4G or HSPA. Of course he'll have crazy battery life. My old flip phones used to last 3-4 days easily as well.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. If you think that the battery in the Z3C sucks, fair enough. I, however, am more than happy with a phone that gets the same battery life as my Razr Maxx HD. The Z3C has brightness turned up higher, and EVERYTHING on (except bluetooth), whereas the RMHD didn't. After one full day and 5 hours of actual use (2 hours SoT and 3 hours of audio listening with Pocket Casts) I'm at exactly 50%. Didn't charge the phone overnight. Gonna use it like normal today, see if I can get 2 full days with no battery saving mode turned on, 10 hours actual use.

Abismal battery life, any ideas?

I'm coming from a note 3 that I used the same if not more than my nexus.
I don't use it heavily and unless I charge it during the day it's dead by 4pm after coming off a change at 5am. So 11 hours life.
Ambient display is off, I use Wi-Fi when available, screen brightness is dimmer than auto brightness sets it to. I've stopped using all widgets, which sucks. I'm currently on a CM12 build with the memory leak fix and still getting horrible life. I'm at 76% right now, 3.5 hours up time.
Is this normal? At the end of the day on my note 3i would still be above 50%, I assumed since this had the same battery size that it would be somewhat similar.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm open to changing settings or ROM's if there is something better.

Its nhot really enough on its own. You'd need to go into screen and screenshot that and also into teh graph itself and screemnshot that at a minimum..
I didn't realize that you can dive in even further on those results. I've turned off detailed location and reduced the screen brightness even further and it seems to be making a difference. It's estimating I'll be able to go about 10 hours from now.

Battery Life - Is this normal?

I recently picked up a Moto G 2014 for a family member since it was on sale and I'm having a bit of trouble, at least I think I am. This person hardly uses the phone, doesn't make calls every day but putters around on it, listens to music occasionally. Real basic use stuff. The battery only seems to last a day. In trying to diagnose/troubleshoot it without rooting or voiding warranty, it seems like it's draining excessively. Just sitting with all the apps closed on the home screen, it's burning up about 180-210 mA according to Ampere. Now, my LG G2 reliably uses 30mA on the home screen without apps running. Apples & oranges, I know but shouldn't the value on the Moto G be lower? Does anyone else use Ampere and have similar readings? With the little use this phone sees, I'd imagine people that use it regularly have to charge multiple times a day to keep the phone alive and I can't see the Motorola engineers doing that. I've tried closing and disabling apps that aren't used and there doesn't seem to be much that goes on. So I'm not sure if this is normal or if something's wrong. I have done all the OTA updates and also tried a factory reset, it made no difference. I'm tempted to root & install the official CM but if there's something wrong with the phone, I want to get it fixed through Motorola first.
Any ideas for this Moto newbie? Thanks in advance.
Here's some screenshots of the battery stats in case anyone's curious:

I'm getting 160-170 mA after clearing all the recent apps with CM 12.1. But battery life is not bad at all. About 1 day with 5+hours of SoT or 2-3days with 3+ hours of SoT. So I don't really care.
Ps.: I don't think that 30mA is enough for phone to run with screen ON. Maybe in sleep mode.. 30mA is way too small value. I also found an article about power consumption of smartphones: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1212.1896.pdf

That sounds significantly better than what my Moto G is getting. I doubt the phone sees 2 hours of SoT in a day but the battery barely lasts a day. I'm hoping it's just hoggy apps and that CM will clean things up.

I think you're right actually. Looking at the Ampere stats, it shows 30mA as the max draw, even after opening several apps and running. I thought this seemed right for idle but it's always stuck there under load.
Actually I had a similar problem with my Moto G on stock. Did you use GPS? Because when I turn on and off gps on my phone it remains ON and drains my battery pretty fast, until I restart my phone. So whenever I use GPS I have to turn it off in settings and restart my phone in order to turn it off.
OK so if u really want a decent battery life. Just turn of sync, location and keep scanning In advanced WiFi settings.
Since its showing Google services as culprit, turning sync off would probably solve the issue.

Bluetooth sucking battery?

I just got this watch and updated it. On the first day of real-world use, it sucked up around 10% an hour. At first I thought that this was normal, but when I looked at the battery stats Bluetooth had used 80 to 90 percent, while the others only used 1%. Are there any tips or way I can help with this? I did update to the beta version (the one with Android o as the base and not n) so if that's the issue I'm fine with that, it does make it to around 4 pm and I wake up at 6-7. This is a very good watch though. I had tilt to wake, aod, Bluetooth and wifi although wifi didn't appear to use much. Cellular is disabled because I don't have a plan for it.
I also just got this watch, and was concerned about the rapid battery usage. However it is now much better. This could be for 2 reasons, or one or the other. The first is that the initial pairing causes a lot of activity over Bluetooth while the watch updates and syncs all apps and may have just settled down. The other, and from advice on this forum, was that I disabled cloud sync (not that easy to find, go into Android Wear app on phone then Settings, then Privacy and Personal Data). Since then the battery life has improved vastly. Hope that helps.

At least you get something other than Bluetooth. I'm on the beta as well as now I get nothing but Bluetooth listed. I had major drain and thought it might be because I tried sideloading apps via Bluetooth. Whatever it was I couldn't figure it out. Factory reset and I'm back to normal

Yea today I woke up at the same time and before, at 3 I would be charging it from 5%. Today, it's 6 and it's at 33. I did disable cloud sync and a weather complication. I also disabled NFC. Other than that I dont remember changing anything else.
You don't happen to be using a Pixel 2 XL?

Having a very similar problem and I am indeed using a PIxel 2 XL, is there something you know about this?
I started a thread in the questions section for battery consumption, which still shows on the first page. The biggest consumers of the battery I've found are the Bluetooth/wifi radios and Tilt to Wake Sensor. That TtW Sensor was sucking down about 4% of the battery just on its own. The best configuration I've found is no wifi, no TtW sensor, no bluetooth, using LTE combined with AT&T NumberSync, from which I get approximately 24 hours. If you want to see other configurations that have been tried and reported, you can check out the other thread.

I've had pretty decent battery life on my watch (depending on what it's doing in a day) but today the thing was dead in less than 7 hours and it shows it's all from Bluetooth. So, riddle me this....do I even need to be synced via Bluetooth when I have NumberSync? What are the advantages/disadvantages (besides battery drain) to leaving Bluetooth on and connected to my phone?

Sounds like something wasnt letting it sleep
Do what I do. Every 2-3 days do a restart of the watch just keeps things fresh.
Mine can easily last 2 days if stretch it. Normally I'm around 50% by the time I get home after 12 hours
Thanks for the advice! I'll start that routine tomorrow and see how it works out.
