Q: Confused about kernel an recovery - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! I'm a little confused about kernel and recovery on the z1.
On all my others phones, flash the recovery was a separate task.
Now I cant find the CWM for z1. All I read is that the DooM kernel comes with the recovery?
is this a difference on the z1 or just another method to do it?
I'm a little scared to flash a kernel that doent work and can goes to recovery either. I'm always sure that the recovery is there to help me for any bad flashing, but if now is on the kernel, if I flash a rom with a kernel without recovery.. ? what happen?
thanks again for the time guys!

Flashing DooMKerneL is another method, you can install it normally.

There is no exposed recovery on Xperia devices, so all recovery methods are some tricks that load a recovery instead of a normal ramdisk.
The fact that both the kernel and recovery are in the same image is the same on the Galaxy SII. Although stock kernel had a recovery there.

And, WHY?

In our case, TWRP have support for internal and external SD. Touch support. I think it backed up faster, CWM around 10 min, TWRP 6-7.
Is the CWM permanent?

Both are. Just it comes embended in kernel. No other way to use permanent, because they are on the same partition (kernel and recovery) on our phone.
If i flash my original FW, will the CWM is missing?

Twrp is best
NOTHING TO SEE HERE

Yes, you will have stock kernel then, and all stock in its partition includin recovery.
i dont know if twrp has the same possibilities to flash zip files. i personally prefer cwm, who cares about 3 min time to create a backup and about touch support, its a recovery and not a launcher

Yes TWRP can flash zip, even use internal(varun modifications) and external storage. Both arey quite good, but I like that touch control more

May be future Devs can make CWM with Touch support, Galaxy Mini have CWM touch recovery why not us.....
i prefer to use TWRP
since tz 4.1 support TWRP, i immediately download it
So let me get this straight! If you are on stock kernel, you cant have permanent recovery. U need to change kernal for getting permanent recovery enabled. Am I right ?

Yes.
On some phones there is possibility to install custom recovery separate from kernel, but on out phone recovery and kernel are on the same partition.

[Q] CWM Installation howto?

Okay before asking me to do "search" I have to state that I searched the whole Galaxy Note forum and got a handful of search results. I went thru most of the search results-majority of which asked me to install Philz kernel. I find Philz kernel to be the easiest way. Anyway, my questions now, if I want just to install ONLY CWM either touch or non touch version, how can I do that? I also do not want the odin way as that would increase binary or result in yellow triangle. Is there any other way to install via stock recovery or maybe mobile odin?
I have JB LSB UAE version rooted using Root supersu by chainfire.
i used cf-root kernel using pc odin during GB as that was the easiest way that time. until now, i haven't encountered any problem

Please confirm that it works on jb ? Chainfire has not provided any version for JB yet. Until then it might not be safe to use. Even that thread suggest philz.

I'm also interested in a way to flash cwm recovery or even update the recovery without flashing kernels.

best you go to phillz thread in development, its got a standalone recovery and read the warnings, thats why bestest flash a kernel with it, and not some dodgy temp cwm. zip
just now i've read somewhere in xda the same issue of installing some sort of cwm.zip (blah) which says that installing the file might brick the phone. just read OP and you'll be safe

Will brick. Too many have been burned already.
@OP why don't you just install philz kernel ? Recoveries are usually bundled with the kernel. Its extremely hard to just 'update' the recovery without changing kernel. Of course, rules are different for devs...

On galaxy Note 1 the recovery (cwm) is not a separate partition like some devices. It is part of th e kernel. So you need a custom kernel to have a custom recovery. Both Cfroot and Philz use a stock kernel with a custom recovery. Either of these will be fine for what you want.

[Q] [Help] Stuck At Boot When Try To Root Using PhilZ Recovery !

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie samsung user. I tried to root my phone (N700-Galaxy Note - ICS 4.0.4) using PhilZ Recovery method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
When I flash the zip in the stock recovery, everything seems to be ok, then when I got out and pressed "Reboot System now", the phone just turned off. I tried to power it on, but I stuck at the N7000 Logo (the logo just appears for a few seconds then disappears). However, I can still access the PhilZ Recovery
What should I do now? Should I flash a new rom with new kernel using that recovery (e.g: OmniRom with Raw Kernel)?
Please help, I'm really worry :crying:
Since you have Philz kernel then you can flash any TW ROM or AOSP ROM which is not KitKat. If you want to try out KitKat then you would have to first flash Raw Kernel and then from Raw kernel you can flash KitKat (ex. OmniROM).
If you want to go back to stock then you would have to flash a stock ROM using Odin.
whats the name of the zip file you flashed?

I don't think he has to be more specific, all of those kernels are for JB
@XperiAwesome flash an ICS Philz Kernel

If you are on stock rom, flash philz kernel first and reboot to recovery , flash Raw kernel and reboot recovery and flash KK rom with gapps.

Yes permanent recovery.
Yes flash philz kernel in stock recovery. Do the factory reset and wipes in philz recovery. It will root your phone too but only till you flash another rom with or without root.
You can flash omnirom with gapps and don't flash superSU wouldn't have root.
Google for philz kernel n7000 and Raw kernel R4.

[Q] permanent recovery

Hey guys, I tried to google this, and search here, is there a way to make recovery Permanent? It seems like it changes with a rom flash, I believe that's because it uses the kernel as the recovery, if I recall? I was wondering if there was a way to make it permanent, as I much prefer PHILZ recoveries.
Thanks in advance.
Actually thats not passible i think
Xperia™ Z (C6602) with Tapatalk
There is the FOTAKernel method. The recovery is written to the FOTAKernel partition and the kernel reads it from there(all/most custom kernels support this, like cm kernel). So you dont have to change the recovery with the rom!
Download XzKernel v25 and flash it, there is an option to install a PhilZ CWM recovery to the FOTAKernel in the aroma installer of the kernel. After that, you can flash any kernel you want and that kernel will read the recovery from the FOTAKernel parition.
or if you want to go the manual route, then go here: LINK and try that method.Though thats for TWRP.
This may help too
