Nothing too elaborate considering the Delay inherent with the streaming.
There may be something a little better than Tic Tac Toe (available) but it would mostly be turn based stuff as anything that requires Twitch and React will not play well.

I could see something akin to the "overview" screen that some racing games do, but as Asphyx says, the inherent delay will prevent anything timing-based from relying on both device and CC screens simultaneously.
Leaderboard, instant replay, map would be possible though.
A Battleship type game would work, as would most hide-your-hand card games, Vegas type gambling games, and trivia games.
Lots of possibilities, but ultimately it's up to the developer and how much Chromecast ties into the core gameplay. The risk is too much tie-in will limit the game's market to Chromecast owners specifically, while not enough tie-in will make Chromecast just a cute toy.
Now if someone made a game that ran on the Chromecast itself... that would be interesting, as it would obviously require a Chromecast to play. Even higher risk, but better possibility of sync between players.

I say bring back Pong! LOL
How much delay could that have! LOL
Battleship is a good one! But your right unless there are millions of CCasts sold I don't see anyone really targeting it.

My question is, if a different company can do it why not Google itself?

I'm sure they could but they are not a gaming company they are a Ad Supported Search Engine and Data Collection company.
Not really what they are interested in themselves but sure won't mind if someone else decides to licence games and use their Software to put it on a screen.

Netflix now has an app for the Nintendo 3DS, yet we can't get one for these Tetra 2 powerhouses. Hell, it works on my Nook!
Its really annoying. I cancelled my account.
If you have an account, please call and ask about it. The more people complain, the more likely they are to make the fix.
Ill restart my subscription if they get it going, but for now, Netflix has lost a customer.
Has anyone heard if/when they are going to step up?
I have to admit that I am surprised that nvidia isn't screaming at them.
i just got my own account the other day, i've been piggybacking off of others for like a year and a half. I can't wait to have it on my xoom so I can just plug it into my living room TV instead of lugging one of my consoles out there, but I can wait.
I couldnt help but to laugh when I first saw a youtube video on 3Ds...I mean it was a big slap in the face to all xoom users.

yeah, we get it, netflix is on the 3ds. this WAS announced from the start you know.
And its not like the doesn't work on the zoom, they just disabled the streaming portion. It took them almost a year after the HTC evolution came to even release an android client, no telling how long for a tablet version.
Yeah no kidding Netflix should be a given on such power full tablets I just don't get it

Haha I do have Netflix on my 3DS right now!
But for my Xoom, nah not possible yet, I hear ya OP. But the 3DS is Nintendo. The Wii is one of the consoles that Netflix fully supports, and if you look at the 3DS version, it's basically the same app ported over from the Wii to the smaller portable 3DS screen.
Nintendo and Netflix have a console+steaming service relationship. They will always officially support each other, no matter what. This is not the case with Android. Not fully and completely supported, not just yet anyways.
We will see full Android support for Netflix in due time. Maybe when Ice cream sandwich makes its debut, who knows. All new tablets and phones will run the same exact OS, making it pretty easy to fully support all devices without a problem. That's what I believe they are looking to do. Makes perfect sense.
The is one of the worst consoles ever. My kids wont even play it, thed rather play angry birds on my phone/tablet. Just email netflix ever day about the xoom...bug the crap out of them

That would be nice, if they listed an email address or had a form to submit. Their customer service contact page only shows a phone number. But, I did just call and had a refreshingly frank discussion with the rep who answered my call. He said they were actively working on it and the issue was related to meeting studios' requirements for DRM in Honeycomb tablets. He was aware of the discussions here and on the other Xoom forum and he even said that some users had been able to change settings to make it work (he wasn't specific, but I presume he meant the build.prop device ID or something like that). I'm still running stock, so I told him this wasn't an option but I thanked him for his candor. He said it was definitely in development, but was unable to provide a timeframe.
I have to admit that his knowledge of the issue and his apparent honesty have me satisfied for the moment and willing to wait a while longer.

This whole thing with neflix cracked me up. I always thought their streaming selection was pretty weak, I only wanted the dvd's as the last rental place in my town went out of business. So I dropped the streaming part, kept the dvd's and saved $2 bucks. To add to that, I always end up using www.crackle.com as it's free and has lots of good movies and shows. It'll also work on the Xoom browser and on my ps3. Netflix screwed up, greedy company is greedy!

So I was thinking it would be really cool if someone would make a game for iOS and android that would do this.
Have a main tablet and x number other devices. The main tablet would be the board. For example sake settlers of catan (I know there is a hot seat version of this game) . And it would display general information. Such as the board, turn and roads, ect. Then in a companion app it communicates over WiFi to the phones and tells them the private player information. Such as cards in hand and points.
I think that this would be a super cool idea for games (I guess you could nix the main tablet) but it would be really cool to be able to play even a simple game with people in the same room on different devices.
Yes I know I am a n00b but I thought I would put this out there. And idk if it is even possible. But it would be an awesome game.

Google blocks Chromecast app that let you stream your own videos...
"Google hasn't provided a clear answer on whether Chromecast will eventually let users stream their own local videos and music to the TV screen. But if early updates for the $35 dongle are any indication, the company doesn't want third-party developers trying to deliver that functionality. The most recent Chromecast update has broken support for AllCast, an Android application that previously allowed users to stream their personal media to a TV. AllCast (also known as AirCast thanks to a trademark dispute) could play back files stored in a phone's gallery, Dropbox, or Google Drive. Developer Koushik Dutta accomplished the feat by reverse engineering the Chromecast's code. He'd released several betas of the app, even planning a release on Google Play, before Google's latest software update broke things — "intentionally" in Dutta's opinion."

Those apps were never approved and on the app whitelist. ALL apps are blocked by default. Only approved apps will run on the Chromecast. What those apps were doing was reverse engineering the Chromecast and using a hack to get around it. Google fixed that hack.

Castrate

Sucks that now only YouTube and Netflix are the only things that'll play. Enjoyed the ability to play local media.

Hopefully Google is just temp blocking until ready to officially supporti 3rd party apps. If not, back to Roku.
I don't know if anyone else noticed but casting a local video file from a chrome browser tab actually plays smoother now. But aircast provided the easiest way to cast a video file from an Android phone.

I'd say we are disappointed because it appears Google is intent on heading off the kind of innovation and creativity that has made the Android platform so wonderful. Google should let developers do what they do best: reverse engineer, hack and create, to turn Chromecast into the most powerful and versatile device it can be. They should let people root the device, they should let people work around the limits.
The disappointment is more that this is a sign that Google is not interested in fostering a creative, innovative developer community for Android. The disappointment is more that Google seems so short sighted in thinking they need to lock everything down. I thought they knew that a large part of the appeal of the platform has always been how open it is.

It may never have been announced to be able to do it, but to most it was obvious that the device was capable of doing it and that with dev support a lot was possible. It is disappointing to see how restrictive Google is being in taking away support for a function that the chromecast can handle. That being said, there will always be a way to accomplish this, it is just a matter of how inconvenient Google is going to make it.
While Google is within their own rights to change parts of the software that was never intended to be used for 3rd party, it's a massive mistake for Google to do this just to kill off those 3rd party apps. There must be a good reason for it and Google should make a public announcement as to why. There's probably a good % of sales of Chromecast specifically because of the functionality AirCast gave. I was going to buy a ChromeCast only because of the functionality AirCast gave but without this, a ChromeCast is useless for me.
I won't be buying until this functionality is officially supported or Google provides an official API/support for 3rd party applications that do provide this functionality.
Such a shame as Google had some much promise behind this product but that seems to have disappeared.

The SDK isn't final. And in this case the developer hacked around one of the most essential parts (the app whitelist). No offense, but I don't want Netflix, HBO, etc to pull their content off the Chromecast so Google can let hackers design apps to stream content from my phone in a non-standard way that was never intented. How about we all wait until the SDK is final before judging Google. All they did was fix a security hole in the device.

I purchased the ChromeCast only for the purpose of wireless playing movies from my laptop to my HDTV. I currently use a HDMI cable, but thought wireless would be ideal.
I never use Netflix.

I wasted $35 plus shipping, because google refuses to allow me to use the hardware I purchased the way I want to.

But I don't think rooting it will help.

I hope you sent this as feedback, very well put. The corporate device manufacture, including Google has benefited from free private development. A lot of the features that come on devices today started with the devs witch in turn busted sales from their innovation and put android where it is today.

I don't under stand what the problem was. I mean, I was just using AllCast to watch videos of my kids on the TV. I'm not willing to spend time to upload videos to YouTube just to do that (nevermind privacy concerns and the fact the world doesn't care about my kid doing backflips off the couch).
I already have an HTPC for media playback, there's only personal content on my phone.
This was probably disabled because it wasn't using the actual SDK and was more of a hack. Was neat while it lasted.

I'm betting for now that the answer is NO...But there may be ways with a Hacked Rooted CCast.
I would be guessing but I expect there to be DRM in those that requires a player that can decode the DRM stream.
Netflix has one for the CCast and until Amazon supports CCast natively I wouldn't expect it to work without direct streaming whatever is on the Tablet screen directly to the CCast via Allcast or some other app that requires a Rooted CCast..

As far as I know...Anything that can only be played through a proprietary portal and their proprietary software (This includes NetFlix, GPlay, and Amazon) are most likely protected with DRM so that they can only be played on their proprietary player.
Which means it is pretty much up to them to incorporate Casting to CCast before you can cast those content items.
No way around it that I can think of.
Netflix activates an app on the CCast that knows how to decode their DRM encryption to play.it's streams.
It's a safe bet GPlay does this too and Amazon will need to create the same system they use.
While we all want Screen Mirroring and Local casting...The truth is the DIAL technology was always meant to be used in the way NetFlix uses it.
Thankfully it is flexible enough that we can get those other things as well.

Yeah, I'm waiting for Amazon too... can already do it on my TV, but my TV's interface is klunky.
I think they will get there but it's a huge company whose software divisions are pretty much focused on their Kindle and Internal stuff.
Unfortunately I don't see them listed under the Dial Registry Database at all right now...
http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/dial-registry/namespace-database
Now that posting could be out of date and it may not mean they aren't working on it just that they haven't registered their Name yet.
They may be waiting for the public release of the SDK. Not sure how close they are with Google as far as development goes to be right on top of it.
I tend to avoid buying any music or content with DRM. I would rather buy the disc and rip it into a DRM free format so I can keep it on the Media Server or NAS.

Totally my attitude as well though recent life changes have pushed me to more of a "wherever, however" methodology, heh. Still won't pay for DRMed stuff as I've been burned too many times in the past, but I'll rent/subscribe for streaming now. Scary. Netflix is a pretty good value when you get right down to it. I just signed up for the first time last month as well. Not sure I'll keep it but at the time Plex didn't support CCast! LOL
Truth is I got it as much for my Mother to use the account as for me! I may only keep as long as the MidSeason Break is on because there is nothing but crap on until January! LOL
Netflix is worth every penny imho.
Well, American Netflix. The other ones ain't so hot but if you have an open mind, there's plenty to watch.
If you are more of a 'up to date' guy, then Hulu might be the better alternative.

I think it's just a matter of those apps being the most logical early adopters for CCast support cause once one media player supports CCast the rest have to make sure to follow or lose marketshare.
And I wouldn't discount Google and the Whitelisting for reasons why we aren't seeing more innovative Apps for the CCast.
Players are pretty straight forward and other Apps are probably getting a bit more scrutiny from Google before getting approved for Whitelisting since those operations actually require a more complex code on the CCast side than the Local Player apps do.
The only thing that I'm disappointed in is the fact that none of the Local Stream Devs are doing much to expand the capabilities of the player on the CCast side. Bubble has probably done the most with it's subtitle support, and Plex's latest release has added a ton of features including Music Photo and some Eye Candy during navigation.
The Most popular Android player apps were popular due to the extra container and codec support they had but unless they can add that support to the CCast side player (difficult I know) their supporting CCast really isn't going to help them retain Market.
As for Mirroring you probably have two forces at play holding it up.
First the Operating System support has to be there which means only devices with 4.2.x or higher will likely be able to run it,
and Second would be the security issues (@bhiga mentioned early on) that could be triggered by some malware that could trigger your unit to mirror to someone else and violate privacy.
Even if someone finds a way to do Mirroring well I would expect Google to go over it with a fine tooth comb before they whitelisted it and lets be honest they may NEVER allow 3rd party Mirroring Apps and prefer to control that function all on their own. Perhaps as part of future versions of Android which currently the SDK seems to have the code for it but is not being used by anyone at the moment.
