I know there's instructions here for unlocking the droid bionic so it can work on TMobile running JellyBean. I'm a little unclear on the different bands that carriers run on.
Verizon is CDMA, correct? And Tmobile is GSM?
I thought I read somewhere that verizon will do an unlock on the phone to enable it to be used in other countries. Would that be enough to unlock the bands I'd need for Tmobile here in the US? Or would their global unlock work overseas, but still be "locked" for non verizon carriers in the US?
I'm only interested in getting Edge on Tmobile. I don't ned 3G or higher. I don't know if that makes a difference as to the "type" of unlock.
I'm basically wondering if getting the global unlock from Verizon would be sufficient for me to use tmobile on edge here, or if I'd still need to do the unlock posted in these forums anyway. Also, if I do the unlock listed on these forums, is there any advantage or disadvantage to having the verizon global unlock done first? Could that make things better or worse after the unlock posted here, or affect it at all?
Thanks for any info you can give!
For Bionic, you would have to do the GSM band unlock method posted here in order to use it on the US carriers. Verizon won't be helpful in this case.

Thank you for the reply.
So if I understand you correctly, Verizon's unlock will only get me GSM bands overseas, but not here. Is that right?
Do you know if there is any benefit or drawback to having the phone globally unlocked before doing the method posted on these forums?
Don't know if there is any benefit or not, but if your going to use the phone in the states or over seas, it's not going to matter just extra steps.
Another thing is if you follow the instructions to unlock all (including US), unlocking for global only, could change some of the values used in the instructions, so it might not match exactly as you work thru it.
However if you just follow the guide to do it, you unlock everything anyways.

Got it. Thanks MoodSwinger! (Great name btw :good: )
Now if I could just get the phone to see my computer! (See my other thread.) Kind of hard to root and unlock when I can't get past the first networking step! I'm going out of town for a week, so may try on a friend's computer.
Thanks again for your help!
Don't know it this will help, but Straight Talk can use CDMA.
My dad uses their "bring your own phone" system with his Droid 2, and it works pretty flawlessly. Runs off Verizon's towers, and he gets a 2.5 gig monthly cap on data... 49 bucks a month. Not too shabby.
---------- Post added at 07:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:07 PM ----------
I'm sorry. there's no cap on data, but after 2.5 gig it slows to 1x speed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just checked out their plans, and it's a great deal for a monthly plan. What I like about T-Mobile is that I can activate and deactivate my data on a daily basis. I can decide I want data one day and enable a $2 or $3 unlimited (edge) plan per day, or I can switch to pay by the minute, and pay for any calls I make that day and not pay extra for anything else I'm not using. That's the kind of plan I'm looking for and the reason I'd like to stick with T-Mobile. But if I ever go to a monthly plan, that $45 "unlimited everything" Straight Talk plan does look good! Thanks for the option!
I'll be out of town for a while, so may be slow to reply. Thank you again for everyone's input and suggestions.

Hi,
I am looking to trade my T-mobile Nexus One for one which works on ATnT frequencies. I will be arriving in the US in 15 days, and will be residing in Troy, New York (zip 12180).
The bootloader has been unlocked, but otherwise there is no modification/damage whatsoever. The phone is around 20 days old. I've been using a screen protector on it from day 0, so no scratches at all.
Would anyone be interested in a switch?
Note: I am looking for a switch only, please; not interested in selling. I'd prefer that the switch happens in-person. I'll post photos of the phone if anyone is interested, but really, it's brand new, no damage at all
Cheers.

Alternatively, if someone from India has that ATnT Nexus One and is willing to exchange in the next few days, that works out perfectly for me too. Note that in India, 3G will work on either ATT or T-Mobile Nexus One.
Just FYI, if you come to the states and don't have any credit history or SSN for the US, AT&T is going to charge you a HUGE "deposit" in order to open an account.
Whereas, T-Mobile will offer you a Contract Free plan without deposits, but no discounts on phones. This won't be an issue as you already have an N1.
You can get an Unlimited Everything plan (Minutes, Text and Data) for $79.99/mo.

I would very much want to go for T-mobile. But the problem is, most students in my area will be using ATT. Then if I have tmo, no one will call me, or vice-versa
Also, ATT has some sort of agreement with my university (RPI) where they don't charge a steep deposit for students without SSN.
I did a lot of research, and found that tmo is perfect for me, but due to, let's say, "peer pressure", I'll have to go for ATT
just so you know, ATT does not have no contract plans like Tmo does, you will be stuck in a contract if you go the ATT route, unless ATT has changed their tactics recently.
I would definitely want to avoid ATnT, fervently. But, unlike here in India, in USA even incoming calls are charged, so if most people around me are on ATT, I will have to use that, right?
also, isnt there a student (college) discount for tmobile? Im pretty sure there is.

That's not the real issue.. The problem is the majority. Is there any way to get around it?
Also, my cousin who is already staying there will add me to a family plan of ATT, which will bring down my cost a bit.
Actually, I don't really need 3G at all.. But problem is, ATT will force it on to me
What is the reasoning behind wanting to change to ATT in the first place?

I'm currently in India, I will be coming to the US in 15 days. Because most of my seniors and students around my area are on ATnT, won't I have to use ATT? Otherwise no one would be able to call me without both of us incurring charge, except for nights and weekends.
Well if you are on tmo and call someone on att then you will be wasting minutes, but thats normal. My advise if you are still unsure what to do is use tmobile for a month(off contract) then if you needs are not set, either by using all your minutes or what have you, then trade your nexus one in for an att version. Why make a long term 2 year contract without testing the non contract option first.
Thank you Blueman101, nice idea By "off-contract", are you suggesting I go for prepaid? Or "Even More Plus" with Flexpay?

Before you do so, consider this in your decision.
- T-Mobile has unlimited data plan and free tethering atm while Att doesn't.
- T-Mobile has cheaper plans that att. Although ATT to T-Mobile phone calls aren't free, there is a certain amount of minutes in your plan you can use during peak hours or calling other phones from another carrier. I don't think you'll go over 500-700 minutes chit chatting with your pals that's what text msgs are for.
- T-Mobile HSDPA (if theres coverage) so depending on your location is faster than att 3G.

Thank you. As a student, I don't think I'll be able to afford data/3G on my phone at all, and neither do I really need it. My only intention in switching to ATnT Nexus One is that if ATnT forces a data plan onto me, I'll be able to utilise it. But if there was a way to avoid a data plan altogether, I'd much rather prefer that!
Hmm yes you do have a point that 500 minutes won't be depleted, and I can talk during the off-peak hours. I think I need to re-evaluate my decision. Sigh, this is confusing!

Reading this thread, I think your best bet is:
1. If you cannot find someone to trade before you get here, fly in here, post on Craig's List LOCALLY and trade face to face, it will be faster and no costs to do so.
2. Since you are going to be added to a family plan, then your costs will be MUCH lower and since you are not getting a subsidized phone, they really can't force a data plan on you either way.
3. IF you decide on T-Mobile, see if your friends have the A-List option on their plans. If they do, they add your number and poof, no minutes to call anytime.
Regardless of what you decide, you really don't have to rush to trade your phone before you get here. It will work on AT&T or T-Mobile and it will be faster and easier to swap once you get here. Just keep it in good condition and make sure the one you get works.
Oh yah I remember... If you have the T-Mobile version of the nexus one then it will also work with att. You just can't have 3g on it, which you do not need in the first place. So you really don't need to trade after all.

As I said, I really don't want to swap (especially because this N1 has some sentimental value attached to it, too). My only reason behind doing is that ATT will force a data plan on me, and then I will be paying for a facility which I can't use anyway. However, I am relieved to hear that they can't force a data plan if I don't have a subsidized phone. Do I specifically need to request this, or spend hours with a customer support tech fighting over it?

I don't think I can afford an unlimited plan on Tmo either. And anyway people on ATT will still be charged, so others will be reluctant to call me/accept my calls. The concept of an A-list looks pretty good, though.
So, in the end it all boils down to whether (and how) I can avoid the unnecessary data plan they might add to my line in the family plan
Hey there,
I have been on ATT for ever and now that they are throttling my data above 5GB. I am thinking about moving to Sprint or T-mobile.
Can you share your experiences?
What is the advantage of getting the new Note 4 for T-mobile?
Is the boot loader locked? How about rooting?
How about streaming YouTube videos?
Thanks!
Don't go to sprint.
Go to tmobile.
We have an unlocked bootloader.
This is how you root.

Yes definitely check your area for coverage first. With Tmo I'm getting about 20 Mbps download at home and about 60-70 Mbps at work. But then if I go to certain part of town I'm on E with no services.
I was beating myself up by holding onto my unlimited data plan with AT&T. Been with them since they were Cingular. If you want truly unlimited data at a reasonably speed then Tmo is the way to go. Just take a look around the development section and you'll get your answer. Good luck.
As att customer that used 25gb alone on my family account I would never leave att. Tmo spotty as hell everywhere I've lived.
Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
I save almost $1000 a year with t-mobile compared to ATT. That was enough to make me switch lol, spotty service but I honestly dont care since I save so much. With Att I brought my own devices and had 30gbs w/ 2 lines, with tmobile 2 lines with unl everything is $100 per month . Never going to look back. Also I leave the country once or twice a year and being able to text and still use social media for free is a plus.
I know generally that most unlocked Chineese phones are not Verizon compatible. But, both the OnePlus 6t and 7 pro are even though they are LTE only so I figured there may be a possibility and was curious if anyone actually attempted it.
This seems like the best phone on the market right now, it's almost $200 cheaper than the next snapdragon 855 phone in the US.

Works great on AT&T Prepaid Unlimited, typically for CDMA carriers you need to buy they're approved phones.
I'm actually on Verizon unlimited and had the same questions for them.
I installed my sim card from my previous phone LG v20. And it seems it's using the provisioning from it. All the network info was there. But couldn't seem to get data. So I used shortcut master lite and went to the telephoney part of network settings and had to play with the network settings. Got it to work really well by downloading a network settings app and playing with the band info. It's pretty straight forward and easy to use.
By the way Verizon has no idea what kind of phone I have and it says it's rooted. But it's not. Cloud works great, my Verizon, message+ and anything I throw at it from the Verizon apps. Tech support said that as long as im using my existing sim and have done whatever I did to make it work. Keep doing it. But they have no idea if they are going to setup services and get the info anytime soon.
So I got just what I always wanted.
A nice phone that they can't track or get into it unless I allow them. Perfect
This phone works fine on Verizon, I currently have both the phone and Verizon service. VOLTE works and everything, just no wifi calling
Wow! You all are using the North American Nubia Red Magic 3?
I'm usually on T-Mobile most of the year but during the summer I need Verizon where I go so I didn't consider the RM3. I usually use total wireless or StraightTalk and I've had good luck with slapping their SIM cards into different phones without an issue.
So if you all can tell me the tricks, if any, and which model (US or international) I'll pick one up ā sub $500 for S855 and big AMOLED screen!

No band 13, but Verizon also uses bands 4 and 5 which this phone supports. I actually believe band 4 is their main band. I didn't have to do anything but put my SIM card in. Although in the past when I had a OnePlus 6T, I had Verizon provision my line to be LTE only. Don't know if that step is needed for this phone, as it supports CDMA. I'm using the North American version bought directly from Red Magic.

Thanks for the info. Band 13 (700MHz) is Verizon's main band due to its penetration and distance, according to online info, but you are also correct ā 2, 4, along with 5 and 66 all work on Verizon. If they put 71 and 13 in this thing it would have everything. So I should be able to get something in most areas.
Good to know I just need to put the SIM in. I can always activate on my old Moto X Pure.

Please oh knowledgeable one, bestow upon me the settings you used to get the phone to work on Verizon. I popped my SIM in to the phone when i first got it and ZERO issues for weeks. Then recently all the sudden I no longer had any service whatsoever. No matter how much I tried to play with the settings, nothing seems to work. Well it was easy, phone off , installed the sim card and poof service for about 2 hours and then I had to keep toggling the airplane mode. Until I remembered when my LG V20 stopped getting signal because I had it rooted. Verizon kept trying to kick it off because they don't want rooted phones on there. And also there software constantly tries to update the phone to remove root on you.
Anyways, I m sure you know this part of Verizon. There are many variations of it. But network settings App. All pretty much show the same menu. But LTE only is what you select. And you will constantly have to go back into it and enable the data. The menu looks like this hopefully I can post it but choose LTE only.

So it basically doesn't work because you have to jump through hoops to make it kinda work?
I remember when I sold my Pixel XL, the guy was able to use it right away on Verizon with his sim card.
Did Verizon add more measures to keep people away with unauthorized phones?

Well all I really know is that they say that they just don't have any info about the phone. It has all the bands that work. Except band 13. I haven't rooted it because there still isn't a functional root for it. That setting in the pic I downloaded, theres a switch that says immediate. That's changes to disabled because of the doze function. It's solely for data. I keep mine on lte only. And just have to change it from disabled to immediate. It's kinda a pain in the rear. But. Its a functioning phone on Verizon service that they say doesn't support it. No Verizon apps except cloud and My Verizon. With limited access. It's great as far as I'm concerned. Biggest problem with Verizon. Is Verizon.
But as soon as a functioning root is available and im comfortable I'll root it and enable band 13. I'm pretty sure it's there. Just Verizon won't pay to get the access to the phones. So there's that.
One more thing the OnePlus 7 pro works on Verizon with some GSM function. There support just won't try to do it on the RM3. Other option is you have a second Sim slot. Get you another sim card and that takes care of emergency stuff.
Guess I'll be buying the best gaming phone ever made, the Red Magic 5G next! Sorry Verizon, it's time to move on. Or you can support this baby and make a lot of money.
I am totally in if this thing will run on Verizon anyone have any idea if there will be a buy one get one offer like with the Note 10?
The ROG phone 1 seems to have the bands for Verizon 4G and 3G (even though 3G will be dying at the end of the year).
https://www.findpare.com/smartphone/asus-rog-phone-8gb-512gb/mobile-carriers
They haven't annouced which bands the ROG II will support yet, unless I missed it.
Verizon uses bands 1, 2, 4, 13 and 66. It supports Bands 1, 2, 4, 13, but doesn't support 66, which is pretty much just a re-label of 4 with AWS-3, and its in very few areas. 13 is the important band, because its Verizon's mainline 4G LTE band, so apparently the ROG Phone II supports it, which is good.
Sweetness, so does that mean it will work natively with all the regular functions like text voice and data?
Moving from note 10 in a hurry...

Hopefully. People had trouble with the ROG Phone 1 when it came to Verizon compatibility, so tread lightly. Iād wait until a few people get their hands on this in the US before pulling the trigger on it.
Any updates... Note 10 plus otherwise I guess sigh...
so even though it says "WILL NOT WORK ON VERIZON", its possible it could work??? i cant believe there isnt more info on this.. i called asus yesterday and the guy put me on hold for about 30min and came back and said "yes sir it WILL work on verizon, but being that it says gsm only i called again to ask someone else and the next guy said it will not work. when this phone was announced i was told this one would work on verizon... wtaf

They don't know! You are wasting your time even calling Asus and Verizon. The thing you need to understand is when you call into these call centers you are one step away from talking to a robot. Everything they tell you is from an internal website or a automated wizard they have up on the screen, and if the employee doesn't know the answer they are going to give you a best case scenario answer so you don't ***** at them and leave a bad survey. Trust me, that's how it works. Save your time and patience!
The general consensus seems to be that it has the right bands but Verizon has not approved it for their network and thus it won't work. Also no CDMA radio to fall back on should you be out of LTE range.

Put my Verizon sim in yesterday to test, got 4G+ data, called Verzion gave them the IMEI and they submitted a form for me s/b done today or tomorrow to get it up and running on their network. The support rep says it registers on their network so no problem at all. On Tmobile now only getting 4G. On my Verizon S10+ I only get 2 bars in my house go figure.

Keep us posted on this. I have the phone and Verizon but bout to switch to at&t in a few weeks, so if I can use it on verizon in the meantime that'd be dope.

I WANT ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE THE PHONE AND HAVE VERIZON TO PUT THE SIM IN SLOT 2 OF THE TRAY AND POWER IT UP. You should see signal. Call Verizon tech support and give them your IMEI and have them check if it registered on the network. If they say yes have them put in a form to add it to the network.

Yes, I have. You will only have data....no calls. Even if vz adds phone to data base, volte is disabled in the US.

Not correct, I already have data w/o them adding me to the Network. Once its added and completed it will work fine even without VOLTE.

Does AT&T have Advanced calling features on none branded phones? Had a Galaxy Note 9 unlocked from Samsung and didn't work.

Lol, no it won't. Without volte the phone drops to 3g...so on tmo and att, calls work, because it's gsm bands. With vz, calls would try to drop to 3g, which is CDMA on vz, so no calls. Trust me, it's not gonna work, unless we figure out volte working.

If you say so, because using a Tmobile sim right now and have that issue. Spoke to my friend an engineer at Verizon and gave him all the specs. He said as long as it registers on their network and has most of the bands it should work. You're right about the No Volte which really stinks.
I'm going to keep the phone, do you know if volte and advanced calling features work with AT&T???
Accidentally bought an ATT carrier locked note 9 on ebay.
It was a good deal and would like to get it working on tmobile
Can someone tell me what my current options are
I have some experience with Odin.
Read on Reddit that requesting unlock code from ATT doesn't work as they give you an 8digit code and I need a 16 digit code
Obviously I would love a free solution but willing to pay to unlock the phone.
any recommendation to getting an unlock code? ALSO is there anything I should check before i buy an unlock code?
Sorry Im an old man still new to this stuff. Yah I know I messed up by buying a locked phone but I am hoping one of you will have some useful information. TY
FWIW I am build number ppr1 180610011 N960USQU2CSGA.
First I would do is to check if phone is not blacklisted.
swappa.com has a free check

TY used Swapa Not black listed.
If is clean why not to request unlock code from att first. I think now they use app to unlock phone. Give a try.

More important are two issues that appear when using a non T-mobile Phone. T-mobile's Wifi calling ability cannot be installed later as far as I have been able to learn. It must be in the ROM installed on the phone. T-mobile calling Wifi calling uses your T-mobile number and acts as if the phone is recieving calls on a direct T-mobile signal.
The other is that T-mobile is rushing to add Band 71 (low frequency long range better penetrating) signals. There are some hiccups that require moving UHF TV stations in some areas, but the pace over the last two years has been impressive. See this updated map - https://coverage.lart2150.com/ Band 71 is important for T-mobile and can't be added if the hardware is not on the phone when bought.
All that said I did convert two Samsung Verizon S7's to boot as T-mobile phones two years ago. That didn't require new frequencies, etc. But can you do that on a Note 9?? I don't know and I think Band 71 Needs specific hardware. Better to sell what you have and get a T-mobile one.

Thanks, No go, the contract was not paid off.
I lots of people on ATT forum says they will not blacklist for unpaid contract phones. should I still pay to get it unlocked?

Based on other posts it says bootloader Ver 2. SW= N960USQU2CSGA
Anyone know Is it possible to flash it with Odin to get Tmobile Functionality. I did it with a phone that was on bootloader 1.
Update: I decided to use unlockbase to unlock my phone. They had a good balance between cost and delivery time and many people on here have recommended them.
I am also downloading N960U1UES2CSI3 from sammobile to flash with the patched odin.
I will give an update if any of the above don't work or if I ever get blacklisted. If you don't see an update than assume all is good.
TY for the advice. Feel free to reply if there is a better option so others may benifit.
We never had problems with the two Verizon Galaxy S7's converted to a T-mobile ROM. If you get the functionality you need I would anticipate no problems!
Stock unbranded rom for sm-n960u1 works very smoothly with Tmobile (volte/wifi-calling) without all the extra bloat.
