Xperia Z cracked display. - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Facing a serious crack on the Xperia Z display. The crack is sort of a hairline crack and it is not like a web which appears when a glass shatters due to external pressure. Had it hanged around my neck and inside a jacket so no chance of external force. Went to Xperia Care Raipur and they refused to take it under warranty treating it as physical damage. Now trying in Delhi as people are more reasonable here. Read a lot of forums and Sony's official forum. It is so confusing. and this accidental warranty scheme which they have started from September 15th is also not helping as it is a manufacturing defect which Sony is not accepting. Please help as I do not want to shell out money for a mistake which was not mine. Please review these forums and help in coming out with a solution.

[Q] Xperia V, repairing the screen?

Hi guys.
So I've an issue .. With no SOny service centers around i rather cracked my screen, though i bought a new lcd+digitizer from ETS (etradesupply) but, as i hold it in my hand .. I've been googling my rear off, attempting to find a guide, how on earth do you actually replace the screen?
Just heat up the screen and peel it off, or will i need to lift the motherboard out, and attack it from behind so to speak?
Surely someone's done this, and can point me in the right direction .. Might i be able to just follow an Xperia Z guide on the matter?
Did you manage to repair it. I have just cracked mine above the ear piece, is the digitizer and lcd hard to separate? any advice before I order the new digitizer?
Anyone succeed to separate digitizer?

[Q] Do you recommend keeping my Xperia Z ?

Hello everybody
This is my first post here, and I need some advice about the Xperia Z.
I have just bought my xperia Z (still sealed but with no warranty or a limited one).
I was looking forward of buying the xperia Z after my xperia neo v was starting to age (great phone btw) . My neo was a great phone, I really liked it and it never let me down. It took alot of abuse and been used to the max, but still standing. I'm a VERY heavy user and I use my phone alot. Although I'm not a heavy gamer but I use my phone to talk, text, organize, playing music, net radio, browsing etc. I'm also not the one who really take care of his phone, I like my phone uncovered, and expected to be able to take some heavy drops and be able to stick into my tight pocket with all of the keys and stuff, with almost invisible scratches.
So after reading the reviews and specifications of xperia Z I was very enthusiastic about this phone. I bought the phone despite that it's out of my budget price ( Thanks mum). But as I roamed into the forums (espically this one) things started to get ugly.
Many people here complained about:
Screen easily cracks
The back panel opens up
And the adhesive used is not heat resistant.
Problem is, I'm supposedly paying alot of money for this durable, advanced and sexy phone, that matches my needs. But right now I'm reconsidering because the two major faults will probably happen to me. First I don't take excessive care with my phone , and I expect the phone to endure some beating . Also I live in a very hot environment so the back panel will defiantly pop. And from what I've hears here Sony customer service sucks.
So what you guys think, should I keep this phone or sell it
Your advise will be highly appreciated
Thanks in advanced
If it is something you plan on dropping then I probably wouldn't recommend this. Maybe the Samsung S4 Active? Still is water and dust proof but the plastics on the Galaxy phones don't break. Screen will still be an issue.
The screen doesn't easily cracks. I was one of the OP for one of the threads. Mine was more of a freak accident.. and if the screen does break the digitizer will most likely break also. Even with that said I'm planning to get another one.

Well I would recommend xperia v or xperia zr for removable battery, and durability might be better than z.. According to ur needs I suggest sell ur xperia z off. Sorry..
I'm a heavy user too, and live in a hot and humid environment (near Shanghai). I've had no problems whatsoever with this phone. I recommend it.
senseless thread
i don't want to be mean, but...
"i like to listen to music, but i like to watch movies as well. shall i buy the new blue ray with my favourite actor, or shall i keep my cd with my favorite singer? what do you suggest?"
Keep the phone.
Remember, what you read on the web are all the people who have had a problem, and while it seems like a lot, it's nothing compared with the number of people who don't have any problems, because they don't go around exclaiming how they have no problems.
All phone have some common defects to a small percentage of users. As far as breaking the glass goes, out of all the top of the line phones it's the least likely to break because the glass has a shock absorbing coating on it. I don't think any others do. Even though you like your phone without a case, how about just a thine bumper around the edge?
The back panel and adhesive issues are very rare, and would most defiantly be covered under warranty.

Can everybody that hates the ASF please write to Sony?

Hi guys,
The bottom line is if enough people complain about this issue, we may have a chance to keep this off future models.
This was my strongly worded email to Sony along with their reply:

Dear sir/madam
After many years with Apple, I finally gave in to your current advertising campaign promoting your latest flagship, the Z1, which you have been carpet bombing every conceivable medium with. I sold my iPhone 5 and bought a Z1.
However, unless you make one huge change with the Z2, I will sadly be forced to move to a different brand in a year's time.
This is because you are insisting on ruining one of the most beautiful phones in the world with an anti shatter film ON top of the screen.
In your literature you say that you use scratch resistant glass, *just to stick the most scratch prone plastic trash over the glass in the world!
WHY WHY WHY!!?!?
It absolutely blights the phone. *Which person is responsible for this most ridiculous decision?
Please do not try and explain this away as a health and safety issue, *you are the ONLY manufacturer in the world who ruins their beautiful phones like this. If every other manufacturer can do without, *so can you.
As the film has adhesive on it, *may I suggest you put it on the inside of the glass? *Or use Gorilla Glass like every other manufacturer.
I love the phone. *I love the Walkman app. *I love the Sony brand, *it has always resonated with quality since childhood, *ever since I first admired my aunt's age old Trinitron TV.
But I detest scratches. *And I loathe the fact that you claim the glass on the screen is scratch proof when it has a scratch prone plastic layer baked onto it which makes the phone look tatty and old after just a month of careful use.
Will I buy another Sony phone again I'd it comes with the ASF glued on the outside of the phone again?
I'm terribly sad to say never.
Complaints about this are rife in online forums. *Everybody hates it.
Please pass this email as high up the chain of command as you can. *I'm sure you have had many people complain and if enough complain, *maybe Sony will listen.
I also want you to make it. *To take Samsung's place. *You have so much more style than them and you deserve their spot there is no doubt, *but as long as you ruin your screens I'm afraid I cannot help you get there...
Best regards,
Johann Fourie

Just peel it off with a razorblade. I used the gap under the earpiece speaker as a starting point. Sony logo comes off with it (on the front) and it looks much better. Besides, the glass underneath isn't Gorilla, but it is Dragontrail, which is just as good, if not better.
edit: Windex works great to get the remaining glue residue off.
Already wrote to sony mobile sweden about it....
Do you guys add another screen protector when removing this one? Was thinking about that "glass m" branded one (google it) its a tempered glass screen protector, not plastic like rest
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
Does the screen tinting change when removing the protector?
I also read something about the glass being very prone to fingerprints/smudges and way hard to clean, is this true? Am a bit interested in trying it, even though it doesn't bother me too much atm.

[Q] Frame swap to change colour

How hard would it be to change a "pink" XPERIA ZR frame to a black one???
I can source a "pink" XPERIA ZR at a good price and I appear to be able to get a black Sony replacement case/frame for an XPERIA ZR from China.
Just wondering what I'd be getting myself into, if I attempt a "pink" for black frame swap.
If it means re-gluing a screen/digitiser, I'm not interested,
Also having to 'break' water proof seals may be an issue too.
I had a look around for an XPERIA ZR service manual but can't locate one.
Found a service manual in the XPERIA ZR general section so I'll start reading....
Any thoughts/insight into what a frame swap would mean, would be very helpful, thank you.
[Update]
Ah, crap. It looks like the screen is 'glued' to the frame and I'd need a "Disassembly Machine” to remove it.
No crazy people using hair dryers to pry the screen off on Youtube, so I'll put this in to hard basket.
Thanks though, sorry to just be talking to myself on a Q&A thread.
Wow. U're so brave.

[Q] Replacing a Xperia Z1 Cracked Digitizer

Hello everyone!
I bought a Xperia Z1 two weeks ago, and it was the best phone I have ever had.
However my idiot brother Managed to crack the Digitizer a few days back, the display is still working and the phone powers up but the touch panel is unresponsive.
(He was playing with one of those Heavy Snake Egg magnets, he threw the magnet into the air, and landed right on my phone. I'm surprised the Display is still working. )
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here has replaced only the Touch Panel. I know on the Xperia Z1 its fused with the LCD, however with a machine like the Scotle PR-1000 its possible to separate the LCD from the touch panel.
Here is the link to a video showing the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8bZi3FreMk
Now I have a few questions such as:
-With this method, wont the LCD display be scratched up as well?
-When I replace the touch screen with a new touch panel using this method, will it look normal? Or will it look like it has been opened and repaired?
-With a new digitizer, is the phone still waterproof capable? (I dont really care about the waterproof capabilities that much anyways.)
Thanks!
Can anyone help me?
You could just replace the entire display module, digitizer, LCD, and all. This would be the cleaner and easier way of replacing it with fewer potential problems. As far as waterproofing goes, I am not sure. Those are sort of uncharted waters (no pun intended) as far as repairs go. If I were you, I would assume not just to be on the safe side, until further knowledge presented itself. I hope this info helps!
FOr the past few days thats what I was thinking.
Especially since where I live most Cellphone "technicians" are just people with a very limited knowledge of electronics, and would most probably mess up the phone even further.
after placing a few calls to some shops I managed to find a replacement LCD+Digitizer+Frame, but I do not know how good the quality of the replacement unit would be.
Dear WEM97 and other users,
I have the same problem as Akash434. Could you please briefly elaborate on what the (potential) problem could be with just replacing the Digitizer. I can't really decide what to replace the LCD+Digitizer or only Digitizer. I understand replacing the whole LCD unit along is a far, far easier process. But cost wise it's also almost the double (atleast where i live).
Upon removing the Digitizer, should the old glue be removed (if any). What kind of glue should I use to stick the new Digitizer? Will u see that there was glue used? These are just a few questions I am struggling with.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
PS: I apologize for any grammar mistakes. English is not my native language.
you can't do this without a professional machine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMj-aWbttJk
This is my video and the description will send you to the links to fix it yourself
Otherwise get a shop to fix it... although most regular shops won't fix it... or get sony to fix it if you wanna continue your warranty
Place the phone on a heatable-3dprinter-bed and warme it up the temperature you want - digitizer was falling of the display last time i repaired my z1. I heated it up to disassemble. Now it is cracked again and i just don´t know how to glue the digitizer on... If i would change digitizer
