So I've previously tried installing a 4.4 and a 4.4.2 ROM on my XT1056, with both leading up to recovery failure once I realized the ROM does not have all of the features that I want or has some bugs.
When I installed the 4.4 over 4.2.2 without flashing it, I then ran into problems like FCs to the point where I could not even get past the screen lock. When I rebooted into recovery it would stay on for a little less than a minute, and while I was trying to restore stock, the recovery would come to a halt and reboot my system. I then had to restore my system.
Today I tried putting 4.4.2 on it and it got through but it had a feature missing from it that I was looking forward to and I tried going back to stock once again and the exact same thing happens. Interrupted restoration to a reboot of nothing.

not sure what you did maybe try reinstalling the recovery
First issue is your setting will fc when your base ROM is 4.2.2 and you have flashed a 4.4 or 4.4.2 ROM, the modem needs to be upgraded to prevent such issues, second issue is the recovery which also needs to be updated to kitkat otherwise you will not be able to restore your nandroids. So you either need to update to kitkat or stay with jb and not flash any kitkat roms

If I were to root 4.4 after taking the OTA, that flashes over a new radio? And if I still go through going to 4.4, would I be able to restore to 4.2.2?

Yes the ota flashes new radios and boot loaders, you can only downgrade from 4.4 to post camera 4.2.2 sbf firmware, I don't believe we can downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2

Posible upgrade and downgrade for MotoX
Im quoting a post from MakTail in other forum:
=======
There are currently 4 different available bootloaders for the Moto X.
In chronological order:
1) Pre-Camera 4.2.2
2) Post-Camera 4.2.2
3) KitKat 4.4
4) KitKat 4.4.2
Pre-Camera ----> Post-Camera <-----> KitKat 4.4 -----> KitKat 4.4.2
The arrows indicate when the bootloader downgrade is possible:
------> (one way update)
<----> (you can move back and forth between these bootloaders)
=======
i think this resolves all the questions about.

right this has to do with the bootloader only thou.
you can still flash everything else but if you do flash everything else and you get a OTA Update and you install it. It will brick your phone and it is not easy to get out of it and sometimes you can't
Hey, I was thinking before the big KK update to make a flashable backup of the current stock but rooted ROM that's on my XZR, locked BL. Any ideas? Aka the total backup, prerooted ftf. Any ideas?

First,downgrade your phone to 4.2.2 firmware & root it
Then install custom recovery & flash a pre-rooted 4.3 rom
Lastly make a nandroid backup using CWM recovery/TWRP etc...

+1
Just take a nandroid backup via CWM before upgrading ,then when you decide to go back ,just flash the 4.2.2/4.1.2 FW using flashtool ,root it & install recovery ,then restore your nandroid backup
I think what the TS wanted was to backup his current firmware that's stock and rooted, before the upcoming KK update, so he can easily flash it back if he's unhappy with KK. I understand this sentiment because I held out for so long with 4.3. I recently updated to 4.4.4 (rather forced because my phone got stuck in a bootloop with no other way but to use Sony's PC Companion to fix it) but was unhappy with KK (some of my apps stopped working or worked inconsistently, and KK prevented apps from saving to the external sdcard) so I had to download the 4.3 ftf to be able to go back to 4.3. If I had backed-up my 4.3 then, I wouldn't have had to download a possibly different region's version of it. So now, prior to lollipop being rolled out for the ZR, I'm looking for a way to do just what the TS wanted to do. I hope somebody posted a guide somewhere here in xdadevelopers.
I also backup all my apps and settings with titanium backup

Hi guys i have a little question,
Right now i have 4.4.2 firmware, unlocked and rooted and with twrp
I wanna test the pac rom or cyanogen a little but my question is, if i have my backup of 4.4.2, after i install a cyan or pac rom based on 4.4.4, can i return safely to my backup of 4.4.2?
Ty
it depends on what is included in the 4.4.4 rom your are flashing.
If you use RSDlite to flash a stock 4.4.4 rom it includes all parts like... system.img, motoboot.img, gpt.bin, modems, etc. The official OTA's will patch/upgrade those parts too. Once you flash those updated parts, you can't downgrade without a very real chance of bricking.
If the custom ROM you are trying to flash only updates the SYSTEM partition, and doesn't touch anything else, then usually you can safely revert to your previous backup.
So i can flash roms on 4.4.2 i can downgrade to 4.2.2 and flash roms and i can make a 4.4.2 backup and restore it.. my question goes out to playfulgod or garret....im not new to rooting and flashing ive been at it since motorola triumph i want to start contributing.... how can i get the roms from the other varients to d959 like garrets miui rom
You can not flash jack s#!+ on 4.4.2. No custom recovery. The best thing you can do is work on porting 4.2.2 jelly bean Roma till we get custom recovery on 4.4.2. Kernel issue and boot loader has us at a stand still on 4.4.2 right now. But 4.2.2 is wide open. Build away.

hmm thats intersting ive been flashing back and forth from 4.4.2 kk and 4.2.2 using freedom flex......on kk when i use freedom flex it gives me a warning that im attempting to use freedom flex but i just do it and it takes me to my recovery then i flash the stock 4.2.2 rom and then i can flash what i want
Yeah you can do that once and have to downgrade to 4.2.2 but you can't flash anything else on 4.4.2. Nothing. You know .... You only get to boot to recovery one time. And you betta have Dfuse's 4.2.2 Rom. Or you'll boot loop and have to use the LG flash tool and we all know how pleasant that is.
And yeah you can flash all you want once back on 4.2.2. I keep a flash drive with my FLEX THIS themed version, dfuse's, and kit Kat. Just incase I screw something up I can sideload or adb what I need.
Yes im already comftorbale and knowledgeable about that my only questions was what can i do to get the miui rom on my d959 and i only seen three roms that we can flash

Hi,
I've got an M7 with a stock 4.3 ROM with root, and CWM 6036 installed. Can I install straight to Lollipop without wiping (stock ROM via update.zip), or should I update to KK first?
I'm planning on updating to the latest CWM beforehand.
Cheers, appreciate any advice.

You'll either have to restore you phone to stock rom and stock recovery and take the ota update or you can flash the latest ruu which will update your phone and wipe everything. Lollipop RUUs are available in the general section.
