OK folks , everyone listen, there's a group of moto x that continuously try to help. With all this ota crap we are starting to get pissed. Every other frigging thread is a repeat about taking the ota , either you're having bootloops, hard bricks or issues.
I would suggest you read and search prior to taking the frigging ota

I find the XDA forums really hard to read compared to say the AC forums because of their format.
I think it would help if you would change your sticky thread title to be in all caps something like this:
WARNING!!!! DON'T ACCEPT THE OTA IF YOU ARE UNLOCKED AND/OR ROOTED UNTIL YOU READ THIS THREAD!!!!!!!!!!

these forums are not easy for me to read. it's the colors, font, etc. Not the greatest design IMO.
Not everyone, like myself, checks XDA before they do something. I know I should, but today was a lapse. This is the Q&A section, and how to unbrick your device after you screw up is a legit question.

yes, I think that is true. A lot of people are excited to get the OTA and just accept it without thinking.

Yes it is but you must search before you do any major mod to your phone, today there's multiple threads about the same issue, at the top of Q&A threads there's a sticky NOOBS WARNING OTA,no excuses read. Don't start another thread when you already see another one that's exactly the same issue. The moto threads are started to be come a horror story. I almost at the point of buying a frigging iPhone

In my case I started a thread because I am in a situation that I do not find discussed in the sticky thread. I tried to list very specific information about my problem which seems more extensive than what is listed in existing threads. If I missed a discussion about my issue, I apologize.

No problem, I'm not expecting for everyone to follow xda rules but the more duplicate threads , the harder it makes to find info, so the responsibility goes to all of use to maintain these threads in a organized fashion

This is exactly why I post the way I do. All the information is out there. Is it always easy to find? No. However it's your time, your money, and your phone so it only makes sense to do your due diligence.
First. Xda rules say to search before posting. So there it is. LOL
Second. If an answer to what someone is going to ask exists...Google search WILL find it. Instantly. Or...sit around and wait hours for an answer to your post.
I don't know why the moto x forum is such a mess of multiple threads and posts of the same questions....man...its worse than a nexus forum. LOL
I don't even respond to over half the questions I know the exact answer to anymore....I'm not going to encourage the lazyness any more than I already do.
My favorite tho....isn't ota questions....its "my battery life sucks. Don't know why." And then you have to coax more info out of them.... LOL. Also the screen shots of the stock battery stat screen is a waste if time. It tells you nothing useful. Gsam people ...gsam! Lol

I always have a good laugh in regards to battery usages, you cares, I hope every house has a little 2"x3" box that's placed usually near their floor about every 6' , its called an electrically outlet you take that white thing called a wall charger and plug it in, take that white cord , you know the one that come with the phone and plug the USB port into the wall charger and plug it into your phone, bam its charging. Even up here in Canada , where we all the in igloo's, we have outlets:beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:

You would have a point if everyone spent all day indoors. See down here in the southeastern US, we don't have to hibernate indoors (except in the summer, lol!) and so we like our phones to have a good battery life because we spend so much time outdoors.
But seriously, not everyone has a desk job! And if your phone can't get you through your work day, that sucks!

The people who are having this problem are the ones who knew enough to unlock their bootloaders, root their phones, and install custom recovery. The OTA was designed only to function if you had a stock recovery and unrooted phone, otherwise the OTA prevents you from proceeding any further. The hardbrick occurs specifically with those who flashed with the leaked 4.4.2 image just once. There's no excuse for not reading: not even one. The OP's topic was stickied and such long before the GSM/DEV OTAs were released and right around Verizon's 4.4 release, so even further reason why people-who-don't-read reap what they sew.

Ok, this is just a idea, we have tried braking the bootloader, we have tried sending motorola a partition with more thatn 4000 names and yet they still do nothing, so how about a nice troll on there facebook page? if we where to get 100+ people posting daily on their wall and commenting on all their posts something along the lines of 'Y U NO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER?!' then maybe they will be forced to listening to the people that buy there phones and want to be able to use them!

Personally, I think we should all post that the bootloader has finally been unlocked, and threaten to release the crack to all their phones unless they officially release one. Just an idea, cause as I see it, they don't give a s*** about it anymore.

While everyone is waiting for their phones, I thought I would start a thread where we could just talk without worrying about going off-topic. If you want to talk about how other phones compare to the HTC First, rant about rotten fruit and the vegetables that use them, etc, than this is the place.
Just please remember that all of the forum rules still apply here though.
welcome to XDA
Hi everybody, I am one of the mods on the team, welcome to the forums. If you post a question thread here in the General forum and notice it is missing, please check the One Q&A forum and you might just find it there.
If you posted a placeholder thread simply to gain thanks for doing nothing, you might have to keep looking...
Thank you,

about the placeholder threads.... you will close the placeholders or delete them
? people start the placeholder index threads (they are closed) and then when the device is released their thread is opened again and that is not fair. if such threads are opened again then what is the use of closing them at the first place. it would be better if you delete any placeholder threads when they are created.
just a request to mods that you delete placeholders.
thanks

To be honest I hadn't decided completely. I understand that such threads are going to be opened even though they are really off-topic and have nothing to do with the phones. In some cases depending on the quality of the post and the attitude of the member, I might undelete/reopen it, but I might not since the only real purpose in opening such a thread now is to gain thanks for doing nothing of real benefit and I don't think that type of behavior is generally to be rewarded. Especially when it is really of no benefit whatsoever. Not like a placeholder for a [GUIDE] or something actually potentially useful, especially if done by a well-known member with a good history.

Not yet. But according to The Verge, the One Mini will be released in the US (AT&T) on Friday. Hopefully, some dedicated Dev might be able to port its (4.2) ROM to the First - or use it to help get CM or other ASOP working.
some pics i took
i think the htc first is a sexy looking thing, and decided to take some pictures using a background defocus mode. didnt quite work out since the camera doesnt recognize PHONES as a face or anything to focus on...so i did the best i could and came up with this.
i had to compress the pcitures, originaly each one was around 3.5 - 4 megabytes in size and was around 2000x1400 in size or something around there. in otherwords. huge.
R.I.P. to that CM development that we had going on a few weeks ago

so if we all have patience either he will do it or someone else, so dont get sad.
also, some plain logic. the more we wait the more people buy the first and the more support we get.
Sadly the First is discontinued so not much people will be buying it unless they are looking for it specifically lol.

Some context since I have a moment: I Used some type of tool/program to root this thing when I got launch day. I finally broke it on a business trip in Japan last week and I have honestly fell off the forums completely since my son was born about the same time as I originally rooted this thing. That, combined with a partnership I have taken on in business- has essentially taken all free time away and, when my replacement arrived yesterday, I felt completely inept and without any reference point in my head to work from. Sad, I really miss having the time to mess around with my gadgets and I've learned so much here, but I'm really hoping to find some balance soon enough. So on lunch, after a day and a half of searching, I gave up and indeed made a very clumsy post, absent of any real thought-clearly showing some frustration. I Still have no idea where this all in one that I know I used to root this originally went and I certainly posted in the wrong section-no excuse for that- the gentleman has every right to react how he sees fit although after 7 years here I never found any productivity come out of commenting in that manor-so I choose to conduct myself differently from the outset. Appreciate the time and help.

I hear you; five kids, a full time job, and full time school and I try to build ROMs for this device. I understand where your coming from. Not the end of the world. But, as I have said in my threads before, if you make a really silly request, I reserve the right to mess with you about it. That's just me. But, I do it in playfulness, not actual meanness. Be cool, and if you need any help with anything, look me up.

No doubt you have that right and I'm all for bustin chops as well-to a point of course and yours was constructive. But some of the rage that I regularly see come out in comments here really bewilders me-I mean a paragraph about what a blanking idiot someone is or details about what they can go do to themselves- all because they are having trouble with something or even made a thoughtless post (like I did) -makes me want to say- "dude what happened in your day/life to react that strongly over something so insignificant?". Who knows. Anyway, I really appreciate you reaching out and relating to my situation a bit- especially since you clearly have a very busy life yourself-to say the least.
just got the Moto X (verizon) - it was 4.2.2 already installed. I have not had time to read through all of the threads, but should I root before accepting the update? and is there a bootloader unlock procedure for this device?

you have to Root before you update to 4.4 if you do not you will have to downgrade back to the 4.2.2 camera update and follow the guide in the link below to achieve root

Unless you have the Developer Edition, Verizon Moto X's bootloaders cannot be unlocked now, and likely never will. If you have the DE, just go to Moto's site, and follow the instructions there.

So your on 4.4? To root you need yo flash back to 4.2.2 camera update. Root with rockmymoto, use motowpnomo flash back to 4.2.2 camera update non rooted. Then root using slapmymoto. During the slap process you will be promoted to take 4.4 OTA.

first off, if anyone around here can make d-bag comments, it should be me, not someone with less than 200 posts and only 35 thanks in nearly 3 years.... I was really looking for a quick response, as I just got the phone, and did not have time to conduct my normal research before making my decision (my prior device was stolen, so I had to make an impulse buy).
So anyhow, curious to see if anyone has tried to encrypt their phone (i'm considering this due to my recent experience), and if that will impact root. My ideal situation would be to have a rooted device that is encrypted. Since I got my device on Wednesday, I should have some time to experiment - I can always claim that after accepting the OTA, it bricked.

I was really looking for a quick response, as I just got the phone, and did not have time to conduct my normal research before making my decision (my prior device was stolen, so I had to make an impulse buy).

Gotta love the sense of entitlement. Basically what you're telling me is that your time is more valuable than my time. Why should I care more about your device than you? You had enough time to post your question, yet you were too busy to click one of the development sub-forums to take a quick glance at the busiest threads?
What does an impulse buy have to do with figuring out how to root your new phone? I figure an OG like you should be able to find information on how to root a device.
Okay, so I've rooted a lot of other phones before and ran roms. But I'm confused as to where to start with the Moto x. I have the AT&T variant, on 4.4. I'm personally really interested in running eclipse. But, I'm not even sure where to start, I'm not rooted, just running the stock ota. Any help would be awesome!
So if you did some searching your questions would be answered. Prior ask this question everyday You need to use SlapMyMoto to root your phone
You need to download rsd lite and the at&t 4.2.2 camera update and flash your phone back to 4.2.2 then follow the guide

I agree...however from experience.. It can be overwhelming.. First and for most OP u need to get back to 4.2.2 use RSD to flash back to 4.2.2 then follow slapmymoto to get root (after being done u can go back to 4.4 currently its what I'm on) as far as safestrap.. Its just a download.. I went directly to there site..hash of coe.. just remember BEFORE U FLASH ECLIPSE...MAKE AN NANDROID BACKUP!!! ( in case of an "oh s*it" moment) if u have questions msg me I'll help with what I can..mom running the "amazing" Verizon...

If he was completely new to Android and rooting, I'd understand how it can be overwhelming. However, the op has a lot of experience.
I always search first then ask questions if I don't understand. I don't understand why people make rooting this phone more difficult and complicated than it really is... ESPECIALLY the dev edition...

I have a lot of XP too...still confused me.. I've owned and rooted the droid x the droid x2 the droid 2 the droid 3 bionic and RAZR.. Even converted the RAZR into the maxx... Don't judge a book by its cover.
I'm not saying he shouldn't have done his research.. Its ur phone..u should at least take 5 min to look...ull spend Kore time waiting on an answer...lol he also NVR mentioned if it was Dev edition..or non..

Totally agree with that. Guys make posts or start threads asking something that even a quick Google search will give them an answer to in 30 seconds.....But they ask instead and wait hours sometimes for an answer. I occasionally comment to them on this....But usually I just ignore the question. Again, one reason why they wait hours for an answer.
I firmly believe if someone is going to mess around with their expensive phone, they should read read read....and search for answers and eventually learn how all this stuff works. Not just blindly follow what people tell them to do. Not all advice is good advice either. Lol
If you don't learn about this stuff on your own guys....your risk of bricking your device will be much higher.
Lecture over.

It is rather overwhelming when it comes to rooting the Moto X. I can entirely see where the OP is coming from. I have read what I can find on the subject. IT IS OVERWHELMING and YES, CAN VERY WELL BE CONFUSING. I have also rooted many devices. It would be very nice to have an easier root process but we have to work with what we have right now.

i mean. i was "overwhelmed" i guess when i first got into messing around with my phone. But it was only overwhelming because i knew what i wanted to do and wanted to do it as fast as possible without understanding anything. If you just read for 5 hours instead of 30 minutes then it isn't overwhelming at all. It just takes longer than most people expect to understand everything they are doing. So they don't take the time. End up running commands and doing things they think some post told to do somewhere without any idea of what they are doing and boinking their phone up. If instead when they came across something they weren't sure what it was and then took time to read/research what it actually was, they wouldn't feel overwhelmed anymore.
Overwhelming comes from taking tiny tid bits of info and trying to make them make sense together. If you read a ton, its not overwhelming to make large tid bits of information you have accumulated make sense together. IMHO.
I didn't do it the way i just described but i also spent days on end trying to unbrick my phones. I then had to spend countless hours actually understanding what i just did so that i can manually fix them. Rsdlite and toolkits are cool and all, but they allow people with little experience to get into trouble where they need lots of experience to get out of that trouble. Also considering everyone that knows what is going on just says read read read and it isnt overwhelming anymore, they are probably spot on (wwhether they followed that process or not).
