In preparation for the update 4.3 I would like to ask a few questions. The Xperia SP is my first android phone, first android device for that matter; And being someone who always enjoys to tinker with things I quickly delved into the world of rooting and custom kernals.
But there are a few things I'm unsure about and would like to ask a few questions:
1) When I update to 4.3 will it erase many settings? Such as contacts, apps, root and bootloader? If so, can I use the CWM backup I have to restore all my previous settings whilst keep the 4.3 update?
The reasoning behind this is I had actually managed to root my phone without unlocking the bootloader. I had not known this at the time, I didn't understand the steps fully and thought I had unlocked the bootloader, which led my trying to install a custom kernal. (Of coarse this softbricked my phone, but it was easily fixable). So off I go to unlock the bootloader. I did not realise that doing so would wipe all settings on my phone. I panicked. It was 4am, my phone was back to being as fresh as a new born and I needed my phone for work in 3 hours. So I restored a backup I made with CWM and lo and behold, all my settings where back. Wallpaper and all. Even better, the bootloader and stayed unlocked.
2) What will happen to my custom kernal if I upgrade? I'm currently using Doomlords custom kernal and I really need to increase the sound levels on my phone (The xperia has some god awful sound levels, always so quiet). If it does remove the update will I be able to instal the custom Kernal again or will I have to search for a new one specifically for my phone and version?
1. Things like settings, apps and contacts will remain the same after update, but you will lose root (and your bootloader WILL BE unlocked coz you unlocked it before, right?)
2. Your custom kernel will be overwritten by the stock kernel from the update and you have to search for custom kernel made for 4.3

Hi,
I have rooted my GT-N7000 phone using CWM.zip and installing the SuperSU Pro
but I did not install the franco kernell...just rooted the phone with the stock ICS rom 4.0.4
Can anybody give me a clear instruction on how I can install busybox safely on my phone please? I've been doing research for days already but I'm afraid to experiment as I've read a lot about people installing busybox ending up bricking their phone. Am still a noob with android and Linux
I installed Titanium Backup Pro and Root Explorer after rooting my phone...I also installed BusyBox Pro from android market but uninstalled it for the fear of bricking my phone as I do not have any idea on how to use it yet. Please enlighten me guys. Thanks in advance!

oh yeah? but you never read about the main culprit, the Cwm.zip which you used to root the phone.

cwm.zip??? culprit??? Why? What's wrong with the cwm.zip? Please enlighten me. Thanks! Never encountered anyone saying anything bad about it...is there anything that I should be careful of? Thank you again! So far my SGN is fine as of the moment and performing fairly better than before. I used the files provided from rootgalaxynote(.)com and I've had it for a couple of days already.

Dont Use that CWM.zip (its a temporary cwm which can brick your Notel)
Caution: Dont do any wipes in stock kernel
Use the following guide for rooting+cmw+safe kernel

Just to let you know, there are a lot of outdated guides and youtube vids on the internet that can damage your phone.
The safest is to follow the updated guides/roms/kernels here that have been updated to get around dangerous operations.
All those reposts around the internet are not updated.
The other posters are right about the cwm.zip used for temp cwm recovery to gain root. That has been found to be unsafe in a russian-roulette way and you were quite lucky!
For example, see the sticky post on this forum lol:

Well I guess I was lucky...just used it to get root privileges and have no plans of flashing anything or using any custom rom...I'm happy with the stock ICS rom that I have. If this is the case is there any danger that i could be facing in the future? What do you suggest I do since my phone is already rooted using this CWM.zip...any safe way of going back to stock and root again using a different process? I just signed in here today reason I am not aware of this issue. Thanks for the warning!
Lastly if I install busybox will that have any effect? Danger? Thanks so much guys! I'm really learning a lot from this forum.
if its rooted.. then dont do anything else other that installing a safe kernel like philz or hydracore. you can use mobile odin to change the kernel safely..

What if I choose not to install other kernels would there be any danger of this bug triggering even if I am not using cwm.zip other than the first time I used it for rooting? Would you recommend me to run eMMC Brickbug Check? The warning is scary "However, the use of this application is your responsibility." what does it mean if you have this "YES, Insane Chip"?
most of the note chips are insane. even if you don't use temp Cwm, still doing factory reset on stock recovery or Cwm can be dangerous. that's why of on ics always go for a safe kernel,no need to worry if on gb

Let me just make it clear so if I change kernel like hydracore I'll be safe eventhough I'm rooted with cwm.zip??? If I change kernel what difference will it make on my phone? feautures, design, etc...? Thanks so much!
To answer your question why I would like to install BusyBox...isn't this a required install when your phone is rooted? Like titanium backup pro...it needs busybox right? that's why if you click on "problems?" it would install busybox but on its own directory not where it is supposed to install???
Sorry for all my crazy questions but you guys are of really BIG BIG help! Thanks so much!
Can't I just unroot and reroot?
no change when you install a kernel. just makes your phone safe for wipes and it installs a permanent CWM recovery. if you have survived using cwm.zip, probably you are fine.
when you install the custom kernel, you will be able to use TB..
if you want to install BB, then

I just downloaded GL_HYDRACORE_v7_STD.zip is this ok? Now just need to find an instruction on how I can install this kernel. I already installed my Mobile odin Pro v3.5...it's ok to flash this kernel on my stock ICS rom right? After flashing this kernel the cwm.zip issue will be gone right? Wheewwww...yesterday I was feeling good about me rooting my phone and all my battery issues and non-running apps issues went away...now I have this cwm.zip to worry about *sigh* do I really have to do this? LOL
After installing this kernel I don't have to worry about installing BusyBox anymore? Wont my installed apps get affected by flashing a new kernel? Sorry about bugging you with all these questions just worried about ruining this phone as this phone has a sentimental value...I somehow regret rooting it...but my quest to solve my battery issue led me to this.
Anyways here's the result from my eMMC check last night

NO. Sane Chip.

open mobile odin and put the zip file in the ota field. Make sure wipe data is not ticked. Then flash.
no kernel change will not have any effect on the apps.

If you are using stock rom, I would suggest to go for 4.3b version as the new version has updated drivers and it will be a little hard to get off it. Or go for philz kernel.
What i have done in the last 24 hours:
1. Updated to 4.3 on stock ROM
2. Unlocked bootloader on my Z1
3. Flashed "PhilZ Touch 6" dual bootloader (idk what "dual means" :S) (Dec 3 2013 version)
4. Used the built in root tool in "PhilZ" to root my phone and installed the corresponding app "SuperSU"
Questions:
Does bootloaders come with a custom kernel?
My bootloaders "About" says its made for the "Z" (not Z1). Did i **** up or is this incorrect?
If i flash kernel (for my device) via CWM will i break something?
Does roms require a certain kernel?
Can i flash .img files via CWM or is it required that the file is .zip?
I see kernels on the forum that advertise being 4 kitkat, do i need to flash that kernel WITH a kitkat rom to use that kernel?
Why shuld i flash a kernel?
As CM is not officially supported on the Z1 yet is there a cool alternative rom i can use?
Thats all the Q's i came up with, hope you can help me answer my ridiculous questions and wish me luck on my first android phone! :good:
bump
I won't get my device until tomorrow, but there a few things I could explain:
Some ROMs need to have a specific kernel. You cannot use Stock kernel with Cyanogenmod, or vice versa. Custom kernels are often a good idea to flash if you want some extra optimizations, you can get extra performance and save battery life with an enhanced kernel.
As for an alternative ROM, why don't you just check out the dev forums? There are Cyanogenmod ROMs, they're just unofficial.
Also, did you back up your TA? Otherwise, you'll be in for some real big trouble.

****, i did not backup my TA. What does that mean for me?
I read in some threads that TA only gives you the option to revert back to absolute factory defaults. As i am having no problems i dont see why i would do that.
Edit: Thats wierd, my TrackID still works after unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery and rooting. Am i super lucky?

It's mostly needed for Bravia engine stuff, as well as the BIONZ image processor. I guess if you don't care too much about that, and you don't have any reason to have to go back to absolute factory settings in the case of a warranty return, then it should be fine.
Hi, used this site for a long time as a guest for info and registered as I have an odd problem I have been unable to resolve. A quick sequence of events. exact problem in bold
Phone updated to JB no problems in 2013.
Rooted using a file from Phil3759 (or something like that) no problems. Used it for about 6 months or so
All Super user installed etc etc, no issues with phone at all.
9 January. Not sure if I deleted something I shouldn't have and the contacts app continuously said "contacts list is updating please wait" nothing came of this.
The phone was running really slow so i thought i would do a factory reset anyhow. All proceeded without issue. Same problem persisted.
I did a "full unroot is SuperSU" or waterer the app is called and the problem still persists with the addition that the software updates no longer work AND it now says my phone is modified where it did not previously.
Fair enough, it is modified after all.
So now, every time I open either the Contacts app or the Phone app the device crashes completely and needs to reset. Everything else on the phone works fine, including the ability to download and install apps from the play store. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix it?
so far I have an essentially virgin device and i have not set up any accounts on it whatsoever, I have also no installed apps other than what the factory reset leaves you with. I also untucked all the sync options previously and tried clearing cache from the google apps i could identify
Am at a bit of a loose end. I can use contacts+ but would rather not.
Since you have root, the rom is now laggy and crashes, it is time to install a new rom. Back up your efs, contact and messages and important data, then go with a new rom. Titanim backup, super back up and hcktool are useful tool from gplay.
Sent from my phone.
you are blowing my mind there. What is an EFS? I have everything i need to back up, backed up. I already had Titanium but to be honest it wasn't worth a crap, it didn't even restore my contacts (which could be because there is a different problem) but as it failed me the only time i ever needed it, i was not impressed.
it did restore a lot of other things mind you, so it could be sour grapes!
i have a phil file, thats how I rooted it, or am i missing something?
this is my status at the moment
Android V. 4,1.2
baseband n7000xxlso
kernel 3.0.31-1103517
build jzo54.n7000xxlsz
I have a file called philz-cwm6-xxlt9-ora-5.08.5-signed.zip which is what i used to root. But the contacts issue and update issues still persist. On the phone app, as soon as any number is pressed it crashes to the point where the phone turns off now. everything else works perfectly well though.
Apologies if i have misunderstood what you are suggesting I do.
There are few issues here if you still want to fix rom rather than install new one.
The PhilZ kernel you use is different from the rom version. That could cause some issues. You should choose the correct PhilZ kernel from his thread in ori dev. About contact and phone app you can download a similar custom rom extract them and replace original.using root explorer. So this also sound complicated. Honestly you should try to learn how to install a custom rom for note. Not that difficult.

OK, will try a customer ROM, if it doesn't work i may go stock, i don't really need any advanced features tbh. My only query left then is my kernel which doesn't seem right. the kernel is listed as 3.0.31-1103517 [email protected] 162#3 SMP PREEMPT TUE JUN 4 20:55:52 KST 2013
that doesn't seem like the normal format. Im on 4.1.2 BB n7000XXLSO build JZO54K.N7000XXLSZ
any ideas? i have CWM installed and can get to it so as it stands I believe i only need to download the rom to an external SD and boot to recovery to flash? sound right? Not sure about that kernel though
The kernel you used is lt9 while rom is lsz. It still work but may also cause problem. So better use correct version for rom. Anyway, if you decide to install new rom you can try Sweet rom 10.5 black. It is fast and stable. Other 4.1 custom rom also good. Android thread. They are all there.

Need help
Hello, i'm newbie here, trying to learn some stuff, i searched the forum but i couldn't find it, i think this page is most appropriate to post it here.
Well i want to flash a custom rom, but my first attempt went not good for me. I've lost my imei and panicked, anyway by flashing stock sony rom i recovered it.
Now i unlocked my bootloader again (it was locked again after i flashed my stock firmware back), rooted my phone, and learned that nandroid app can make a full backup, and even i screw things up (except hard bricking i guess), that backup will save me. So i downloaded it made a full back up, but it says "back up type: clockwork or TWRP,"
And i heard that TWRP is not for Xperia Z1. Thats why i decided to not install it,
Then i installed clockwork rom manager, it said "this app requires clocwork recovery", but i couldnt find a appropriate version of clockwork recovery, the ones i found on play store were for android 4.0.4, and mine is 4.4.4
You guys probably understand that i know almost nothing about this stuff, (i have only got what i read form forums), so what should i do, which version of clockwork should i install or is there any other supported apps that i can use my nandroid backup?
Soka, i checked your link but couldnt be sure about which link should i click.
And another question, do i still need titanium backup while i have nandroid?
Thanks in advance

CWM Recovery
There two methods:
1. Unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel (Bootloader Unlock is required for flashing custom roms which are not stock based; for example cyanogenmod)
-> with a custom kernel you have cwm and often twrp also.
2. check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/development/newroot-z1-t2807092
maybe you have to flash .108 kernel to use newroot, after rooting you can flash the actually kernel from your firmware....

Hi,
A friend of mine has an E1 D2004, he says he can't install any apps because it says it's out of space, so I'm researching to see if I can help him out with it. I have some experience of installing recovery/rooting/custom roms on my nexus devices, but no knowledge of Xperias.
I've read through many of the posts here for improving the performance of this phone, and I'm thinking to first try debloating it as in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-e1/development/flashable-debloater-xperia-e1-t3098724
I've seen another method to disable services, I think using the script is a bit more complete though?
I'm also very intrigued to try installing this custom ROM, (if my friend is willing to try it). The only question I have there is that it lists for D2005... I think D2004 is basically the same phone, can anyone please confirm this ROM is good for the D2004 as well?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-e1/development/illuminated-rom-xperia-e1-d2005-kk-lb-ub-t3230441
And I have a couple of basic questions:
1) how to make a backup before changing anything? (Is it necessary to install philz recovery before a backup can be made)
2) how to restore if anything goes wrong?
3) I've seen firmware updates mentioned in various places, where do these come from?
thanks for any help
1. You can install Philz Recovery If your friend's phone has an unlocked bootloader (try to unlock it first)
2.If anything goes wrong you can always use the recovery, or install a new firmware (XperiFirm)
3. Look above.

Thanks, I didn't come across XperiFirm before! I was a bit uncertain about the flashtool because when I looked at the listed firmwares on the website I didn't see D2004 listed. I guess that doesn't matter if I use XperiFirm to download it.
Can anyone confirm if D2004 is the same as D2005 for the purposes of installing a custom ROM?
