Yes, indeed. The baseband is mainly responsible for your cell phone signal. But it depends on your region, which one's best for you. Basebands aren't usually included in the rom, so you can just go on using your current one, if you don't have any problems. I usually flash the latest stock firmware for my region before flashing the rom and then just leave the baseband. But you could also try flashing one of those: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273164&postcount=4.

CM11 Nightly
Okay, so can anyone answer this? I've searched quite a bit and I don't have a definitive answer yet.
First off:
- I'm currently with an unlocked Bell Canada GT-I9000M (SGS) but my current carrier is Fido/Rogers.
- The current ROM is an official CM11 nightly ROM (20140513).
- I don't know what the kernel is (or that even matters). Kernel version says 3.0.101-g5fba4f [email protected] #1
My baseband is I9000XXJVT
Now for my question...
I'm finding that my reception is crummy, terrible, just plain bad. I'm losing signal all the time. Can I flash one of these modems using ODIN even though they seem to be "older" modems and CM11 is KK?
My hunch is that I can but I want to bee 100% sure before attempting this.
Cheers,
J.P.

Please help me I need to use my phone again
What country are you in? It really doesn't matter necessarily what you download. I'm in the United States so of course I'm not going to have one for the international note so I just used Open Germany.
I Am in Canada
You mean I can use any of the downloads it will work?
I was thinking that I absolutely need to download the same as my baseband
I am just affraid to screw up

Yeah. The baseband is totally separate. That's your modem and you just have to find one that works best for you, but its separate from the ROM.

I think i am confused, that mean I could install a different modem (Phone button in ODIN) ?
Where can I get these ? peraps thats my only problem in ICS, everything is fine except the sound of the phone. Maybe I should try a different Modem before going back to GB?

Sorry, I'm confusing you.
Okay for the ROM itself: Put the file in the PDA section in Odin.
For a baseband/modem: there is a thread in the android development section with all the modems. You can download the zip and flash it in CWM. A GB modem CAN work in ICS and vice versa. I'm using LPT but it affects people differently depending on where you are.
Thank you
Thank you for your help Andrew . you put me on the right track. I have now a working ICS on My note and everything works perfectly, even calls
Hey,
currently, I have got CM10 latest nightly. I can write SMS but have bad audio quality in calls. This is nothing special and has been discussed in other threads. But there is one question, which is not answered in these threads:
Do I need to flash a new baseband? or will a future CM10 nightly fix this issue by its own?
Thanks for any help!
P.S.: Here is my current configuration:

Better you flash new baseband..
20L n 20s are woking for me.
Also 20L will match with cm10 RIL.
Well, this is kinda ambiguous. On one hand, you've probably had zero issues on CM7 ROMs using the exact same baseband just with a different RIL. Thus, it's possible that a new nightly could resolve this issue.
But on the other hand, some people have reported improved quality when using a new baseband so it's possible that flashing a new baseband may solve your problems.
I recommend you try out new basebands if it's urgent that you get calls working properly again.

yeah theres a hole thread about this questions...
A lot of people, including me, tonyp and RC are using v10b 218 and its working pretty fine!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658047
You need to try out some BBs... theres difference for everyone here... One example, my friend has the same phone and his living in an other city near me, so the same COUNTRY, but my o2x is working perfect ond v10b... but his one got problems with SOUND, GPS... and and and.
So download few of them and just try it...
p.s. BB RIL Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966078
I'm using 420 not 218.
Didn't try any other.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I flashed 521(20s) yesterday, yet it didnt bring much.
since i need the voice call, i have to revert back to CM7...then the nightmare starts...
sometimes it works, sometimes (after reboot) it says "unknown" bb...also getRil can not help...
So i have to flash back to 725 and hope RC could fix it without having to flash the stupid BB...
So my suggestion is: do Not flash any BB, except that u got a backup phone, otherwise when u need a working phone on the way... u might have big trouble to restore back to CM7
Hi guys.
I got second hand galaxy i9000 with stock rom in Lithuania.Europe.
Will try to explain my little problem.
I believe problem is in baseband.. but my (custom rom) experience is only with Xperia Arc and i see working with Galaxy is a bit different.
Hope u can direct me.
Flashed this file CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar via ODIN 1.85 ...
Got CWM with it and installed CM10.1 RC1
Phone is up and works fine but except mobile internet (settings are proper) Gtalk works, facebook notifications are ok, but browser not, facebook by itself does not load, Gmail do not syncs...etc no internet!
Everything is fine when on Wifi.
My exsisting baseband is XXJVT.
I have searched loads of topics and could not find anything usefull. Too much confusing outdated info to be sure to proceed flashing phone with CM10.1
Please correct me and advice how to change baseband (or if any other problem u see here)
As I uderstand my previouosly used JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS is not proper? and all i need is to find proper tar file which makes root, kernel and baseband at once for Galaxy? Please advice which one and where to get it then, or what other problems you might see here?
Thank you

Whats da original baseband? JB will be on XXJVT
anyway, revert back to GB to retrieve ur baseband, dont know if its work but try search this I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA and download it
as for cf :CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS. flash using odin
I always use this on my i9000 to revert back to GB whenever i wanted. Its basic GB firmware and CF Root
and if works, dont forget to backup efs or just do a backup on everything

try a different radio. there are 2 new radios, 98r and 95r. which did you flash? try the other one.
That's why I stay stock no offense to these custom Roms but I have yet to find one that is stable enough to use as a daily. IMO.

there are many that are as stable(sime even more stable) as stock. anyways, hes having an issue with reception, which has nothing to do with his rom.
I bet your having the same issue I was..... the default for the apn was metro.
Delete all the apns till you have this one left.
