My wife has been complaining that she cant access many of the setting options on her moto x in comparison to my Note 3. Is here a way to get more access to the settings on the X, like with a hidden setting toggle or with an app? I know I can root it and do a whole new rom, but was hoping for an easier solution. Thanks in advance for any advice.
You mean like Developer Options and stuff? You can own the Developer Options on your wife's Moto like you can any other Android.
You didn't get very specific about what exact settings....but most root, then use Xposed and gravity box for a lot more customization.

Samsung has added a lot of little settings and features that aren't on stock android. Some of the options you are looking for night not be available.

I've had a DE for a week now and I really don't like it.
Up to now I've had generic Chinese knock offs. I've been a programmer for going on 40 years and I thought I'd try the smartphone thing.
Played around with the knock offs, wrote a few tasker profiles and decided that these little computers are really cool. (Even if they do SUCK as phones)
The knock offs were junque so after some diligence I decided on the Moto X DE. I need a GSM unlocked phoe because when I'm at my place in Jamaica I use Digicel.
The Moto is a great piece of hardware but unless I do rooting, and flashing and all that crap I'm tied at the hip to Google and Motorola.
I'm going back to one of the Blu phones. Good (not great) quality, and no strings attached. Plus it supports an internal SD card. I had to buy and adapter to plug into the mini USB port on the Moto. Gonna sell that with it.
Guess I'll list it on ebay and Craigslist.
I have enjoyed this blog .....thanks

I feel like taking the 5 minutes to root would benefit you more than trying to find a buyer, but hey, to each their own.
Yeah...rooting can be done easy enough and you can get rid of anything you want. Or, you can simply turn off all that stuff and not use it. No fancy work involved.
Getting an inferior phone seems kinda silly.
Just my 2 cents.

I see no reason why you can't very easily do this.
If its not what you want to do...or too much work, then why did you get a dev edition? .....without trying to be a smartass.....I'd get an iPhone.

If someone could point this noob (me) to a safe straightforward rooting method for my AT&T 4.4 I'm all ears- This is more an indictment of my lack of skills than anything.. Thought it might be as easy as rooting my old S3..

Won't be as easy due to your permanently locked boot loader.
Personally, I'd return it if I could and buy one from another carrier that can have its boot loader unlocked and has compatible radio bands..then sim unlock it.
Otherwise you need to root with safestrap. Check the dev section. No...not so straightforward. Sorry.

Look at the 4.4 root method. Slap my moto. There's a download link for the 4.2.2 stock firmware download that along with cydia impactor and rsdlite. Now that your on 4.2.2 follow the rock my moto guide posted in the slap my moto thread. After rooting with rock my moto follow the write protection off guide then after that follow the slap my moto guide. Its so easy a caveman can do it.

Thanks.. In all honesty, this is the first phone I've ever had that I was happy with out of the box, and didn't really feel the need to root. Bought it straight from Motorola during their on hour sale. So very little if any bloat..
But sometimes the nerd in me wants to try it just for the heck of it.. But sounds like I'm SOL. As I said- at the end of the day I'm very happy with it as-is..

Take it that you know how to use Odin its almost the same thing as rsdlite.
And adb fastboot. If you sideloaded anything its pretty simple.
For telnet just hit start on your windows machine where it says search just type telnet.

Isn't the point of buying a dev edition TO root and flash and all that? I mean otherwise you can always just buy the locked version...
Moto X is the best Android I've owned... And I have had a LOT.
Phone: Moto X
ROM: 4.4 Stock w/ Root
Xposed: GravityBox & MotoTether
Service: Straight Talk ATT
Android Stuff: http://ozzygeek.tumblr.com
The issue is....
I've written code in every thing from assembler, cobol. fortran, basic, VB, C++, linux etc.
I've reviewed the slap my moto version of rooting the 4.4 OS and there are quite a few steps. Plus I'm a Mac user nowadays.....
What puts me off is that this little computer will turn itself into a brick if I do anything incorrectly. No way to debug the routine to see if it will work
Granted I haven't written a line of code in 10 years. But from the posts I see there are quite a few who have messed up this process

I made the switch 2 weeks ago, from an HTC One. Nothing was wrong with the One, it was just too big for my hands. I love the X. I couldn't be happier with it. I get no stuttering, no freezing, no bad experience at all. I'm sure others will disagree, but I can't tell the difference between the 1080 screen on the HTC and the 720 on the X. I like Motorola's take on Stock Android. I

LOL. Nothing out there today can slow the x down. You need to understand how its made. It's highly optimised and has 2 other cores for other tasks.

There's a few opinions.
Basically every reviewer loved the overall experience of the Moto x that I've seen on the web.
The N5 is powerful and has a lot of roms. That's about all its pros.
The X is a polished and quality phone with exclusive Moto features. Near vanilla. And most can't tell the difference between the screens on devices this small. TV's sure....but not phones.
Unless she likes to flash stuff, the Moto x is clearly the better phone for average users. (Non xda types).
And battery......can't beat the battery on many phones. Had to throw that in. Lol

Granted....I'm rooted and tweaked for battery life....but few, if any, N5's can pull off these stats. Yes...this was a record day...but look at the averages at the bottom. I consistently get 30 hours or so with 5 1/2 to 6 hours screen time.
Also....do you see any complaints of quality issues in the x forums? Aside from average camera....comparable to the N5. I know for a fact the N5 forums have many build quality complaint threads.

For your wife, Moto X is a better choice. It have Moto Maker so you can customize a color she wants. I consistently get 5+hours of screen on time with the Moto X, this is what matters, what's the point of all the power if you run out of juice before the day is over. The form factor is better to hold and is smaller in size without sacrifying screen estate.
The Moto X is well optimized and so is KitKat, it will run smoothly down the road. You can enable "ART" which will give the phone a bit more smoothness. There are people who came from Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 which are much faster devices but complaining it's laggier than the Moto X due to the bloatwares and TouchWiz interface. The Moto X run stock Android so it's a lot lighter. Also since it has 720p screen instead of 1080p it doesn't require as much performance.
The Nexus 5 is also a great phone, you get unlimited freedom with flashing. You can't go wrong with either one, but the Moto X to me have more useful features going for it. It really depend on what you're looking for since they're both good phones. In this case since it's your wife, unless she's really into custom roms and tweaking Android OS, the choice is obvious.
I thought it did not run stock android ?
My wife's coming from a Xperia Z which surprisingly she loved. She doesn't like apple. Hates Samsung (feels cheap) and was considering the HTC one but doesn't like the capacitive buttons. ( women are strange creatures )
No moto maker in Canada. I contacted Motorola US and they said they would only ship to an American address .

Moto x is stock android. Just a few Motorola apps thrown in. There's no touchwiz or HTC like ui overlay.
Yeah, I'm in Canada too. No Moto makers here. The Rogers versions are all over kijiji...some new too. Mine was unwrapped. I bought it, bought a telus nano sim. Before I activated the sim I bought an unlock code off a site. Waited a few hours for it. Got it...sim unlocked the phone and then activated my nano sim on the telus website. And boom it worked.
The next day I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, installed xposed and gravity box.....and have no desire to flash any roms now. Lol

I appreciate your analogy as that is my favorite Porsche of all time and I'm a long time Subaru owner.
I think the Nexus 5 is more like the STi while the Moto X is like a s206. Basically the same car but the s206 is optimized with some choice additions which make it that much better.
Maybe a better analogy would be the Nexus 5 is like a 911 Turbo S and the Moto X is like a GT3 (maybe even the RS ). The GT3 is down on power but it's a better overall driving experience. The quad core GPU of the Moto X is like the combination of the GT3's upgraded suspension/tires/aero with a lower curb weight, the dual core CPU is like the high-revving flat 6, and the remaining low power dual core relates to the PDK. While some night not want the Touchless Controls and Active Display (which I can relate to the PDK and engine type) because they'd rather have the brute power of twin turbos and the feel of a manual, others will want the instantaneous shifts of the PDK and a 9k redline NA engine.
For the many people who have successfully unlocked their device or are planning to, what custom Roms are available or could be available to us? Is the only current custom ROM cm11?

Remember that with a custom ROM you lose touch less control moto assist and notifications. For me that is a deal breaker I think that is why there is not a huge amount of people looking for ROMs. Most of what makes a rom great is the customization which we can do with exposed.
I really wished there would be more Stock Based Custom ROMs, but there's only two, Eclipse and KangKat, which are great, but I want more choices. lol. I'm thinking about making my own ROM..
I think the same...
Customs dont worth it if you loose intelligent notifications and touchless control.
Anyway, I miss miui

Some time ago there was some controvery about some of the motorola phones spying on the users in a pretty bad way. Does the moto x have these features?
http://www.beneaththewaves.net/Projects/Motorola_Is_Listening.html
There is a full list of applications that come preinstalled that can be disabled. As far as I know, it doesn't seem that Motorola do any 'spying'. Mostly carriers are the ones who install this spyware onto devices.

Advanced calling
Anyone heard and updates on when it will get this add on. I'm disappointed. My Droid Turbo has Advance Calling but no Lollipop. My Moto X has Lollipop but not Advanced Calling.
Droid turbo is Verizon's flagship device. Moto x isnt
In your theory why doesn't the Turbo have Lollipop then? Is the programming code that difficult for advanced calling in lollipop?
Cause Verizon can market Advanced Calling as a feature, no one in the real world cares about OS updates.
Lol. I guess some don't but there are people that do. Anyone know if Verizon's Moto X will get 5.0.2 update?

Because even though it's Verizon's flagship, it's not Motorola's. The Moto X is.
Even the droid mini has advanced calling. So much for q4 2014....
Contacted Motorola to find out its up to Verizon to release the software for advanced calling, they do not do anything with it. Seems like carriers need to get more involved with updates. Most don't seem to care when you get updates.
I just updated Google play services to 7.0.87. Apparently the new update breaks smart lock trusted places. Tried installing a previous version but I can't seem to downgrade. Any tricks for getting an older version to take.
