Problems receiving phone calls while on LTE? (SVLTE / CSFB) - Sprint HTC One (M8)

Wondering if anyone has noticed any issues making or receiving phone calls while on LTE. This article describes the issue, which effects all tri-band LTE sprint phones:
http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/
Here is another story on this issue:
http://www.geek.com/android/sprints...ed-service-for-the-forseeable-future-1577462/
Basically, the original One (M7) has SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE), so it had no issues making/receiving calls while on LTE. The New One [what a stupid name] (M8) does NOT have SVLTE. (No tri-band LTE sprint phone does.) These new phones require a technology called CSFB to make and receive calls while on LTE. Basically this new technology causes the towers to tell the phone to disconnect from LTE and connect to EVDO/1X to receive a call. (This should not effect texts as they can be delivered over LTE). The problem is that a lot of sprint markets are still in the process of 4G buildout and are not implementing this CSFB properly. This is causing the following problems for some people:
1.) Not receiving incoming phone calls while on LTE.
2.) Long (15 seconds or more) delay when making a call while on LTE.
3.) Phone will not connect to LTE even though there is a good LTE signal because it detects the tower does not have CSFB enabled. (This is what the tri-band phones are SUPPOSED to do to avoid problems #1 and #2 above)

Mine isn't receiving calls period. And that is while my phone is in CDMA only mode. Outgoing calls take forever to dial, and usually I drop the call. Texts are all messed up, they take forever to go through.

Ah man, that's horrible news! I had not heard of this yet and figured m8 would have Svdo or svlte of some sort! Wtf... Hope we can come up with something to combat this for people I'm troubled areas. Get mine in a few hrs, and I'll keep n eye out for this. Have had lte in my town, and area where I work and live since January 2013, so full lte deployed area I'm pretty certain.

I get calls will streaming (slacker) on lte with no problem. So I am assuming, if I am understanding this correctly, that they have CSFB implemented here even though we do not have Spark.

My lg g2 was having the same problem and now my m8 is doing the same smh

What kind of behavior is yours doing? Is your 3g, text, and calls working?

haven't specifically noticed no incoming call on lte, but definitely a bummer 3G no worky during call anymore... really got used to that with evo lte

Damn Sprint still hasnt figured this out?? I was thinking about staying with Sprint but damn not being able to use data while on a call sucks!! And not being able to receive calls while on LTE is even worse!!

Yea, in a perfect world, we'd just have LTE all the time, no need to SVDO, and updated LTE so SVLTE works haha

There is nothing to figure out as far as SVLTE, it's just not gonna happen on Spark phones, it was going to be an engineering nightmare apparently. As far as getting calls while on LTE, unless you put your phone in LTE only mode calls will come through just fine although there may be an additional 1 or 2 second delay vs being on 3G.

Well I cant say Ive personally experienced this problem but why is it that some people are reporting issues with tri band LTE devices? Can anybody confirm that this issue is fixed if the phone is not set to LTE mode only? Besides dont most Sprint phones ship set to LTE/CDMA by default? I couldnt imagine having a Sprint phone set to LTE only considering how spotty their LTE network is..

Could always be worse. Having said that, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've used SVDO on my EVO LTE, so that, at least, isn't a huge deal to me.

From 3 days experience testing this phone, it has received every call made to it. Indeed, it takes about 1-2 seconds longer to connect, but the phone has received the call every time. I think the main situation where you may miss a call is when you're driving and the phone thinks it is on LTE, but in reality the signal is too weak to receive. In that case the phone won't receive the eCSFB notice of incoming call. But honestly I haven't had any issues.
One issue I am having tho, is the phone deliberately (I assume) not using a good LTE signal and instead staying parked on 3G. Toggling airplane mode on and off will cause it to use the LTE signal. Im not sure what causes that but I assume it is eCSFB related. It happens consistently after I drive to a certain part of Buffalo. I suspect there may be 1 or 2 towers that have LTE but not eCSFB. My GUESS isthat if/when the phone encounters one of these towers it will force itself to not connect to ANY LTE for some time period (> 30 minutes from my experience). This is a safety mechanism to ensure the phone remains able to receive calls.

I managed to get a couple speedtests in before the network disappeared. These were taken near Pearland, which is just south of Houston, Tx with a N4.

Neither can I. The LTE network isn't commercially live and T-Mo simply doesn't want us on it. I have no other explanation. They've had the security system implemented for a while, and if your device isn't provisioned for internal testing, you shouldn't be on. There is too much information we can gather from it, the amount of bandwidth used, frequency, and what they care mostly is the speeds. The speeds are their selling point, money makers, and what we're seeing when we connect is nowhere near what T-Mobile would like to have talked about.
To prove my point, remember the GigaOm, TmoNews story that popped up about 10 days ago covering my speedtests from Astoria, NYC, with speeds up to about 18mbps?
http://gigaom.com/2013/03/15/t-mobiles-lte-network-spotted-hiding-in-the-urban-jungles-of-nyc/

Well, the next day T-Mobile called in a Press Briefing with CNET, LaptopMag, Verge and Engadget writers and setup an internal 2x10Mhz LTE cell site in NYC to showcase their speeds that were 62mbps.. http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57574614-85/t-mobile-equips-galaxy-note-2-with-fast-4g-lte-powers/ They've embargoed the story until monday morning at 9AM when all four blitzed the media. Bravo! :good:
Bottom line, they extremely care about their image which has been hurting, as their CEO has been announcing the best network since sliced bread. My speed tests weren't very hot and they had to prove their point.

I have friends up in Grafton, WI i visit and I've noticed they expanded the 4g a LOT but now it appears grafton is just one big 2g dead zone. (Literally! on https://maps.eng.t-mobile.com/pcc-retail-default.php ) Just odd that they would take away a LOT of 2g coverage that's always been there!

HSPA+ implemented on TMOUS as HSPA-42mbit. People call it HSPA-DC(Dual Channel)as well. Normally means faster speeds although the best I've seen on H+ is 14mbit.

SJ is going to be a launch market in three days so it makes sense SF has it too.
From what I've been reading over on HowardForums, yeah when they install the 1900mhz HSPA gear it's probably LTE ready as well. From what my 3GS is showing me, I have 1900mhz HSPA here in LA but I doubt it's getting LTE for a long time...I remember it took almost a year until I got H+.

Yeah, I know and I have them enabled and I am in NYC which is Spark enabled but I don't get no stinking Spark on my N5... I have read many other people in Spark enabled areas standing next to a Spark tower that cannot connect to the other two bands even though they have enabled all the bands on their N5. I think there is an APN setting or something that we must get via some type of update for us to take advantage of the Spark towers.
Here ya go Raistlin.

I have had those bands enabled since I got the N5 by using that thread, but I still don't get Spark. I am pretty sure that we are going to need an actual update in order to connect to the Spark towers even though we have enabled all the bands on our N5s.
It varies. Even if you have the bands enabled, it doesn't guarantee that you'll connect to Spark. I was lucky to connect to Spark and got around 60 - 70 Mbps.

Yeah I have read very mixed results with this, some people swear they have connected and then some people say they are standing next to a Spark tower with all bands enabled but their N5 does not connect to Spark.
I just know that I have all my bands enabled and in various placed throught NYC I never connect to those bands. I am just hoping that there really is some update that will solve this for people who cannot connect.
Spark will not work on the N5 by simply enabling those bands. I have mine enabled and no spark and my desk sets next to a window dead in a perfect Spark area.
I researched more and found that there are new APN's and a new radio and updated APK that allows the phone to use the multiple bands for data.
We are about a week or so away from getting the update. LG finally sorted out their issues with Spark and dumped it on the G2. Right now google has it and they are working it into the rom and testing. I've been told one to two weeks if any issues occur with testing.
I've been working in the sticks and been getting 3g and today it all LTE . my buddy's HTC one is still on 3g

I agree that we need an update, that is why I posted this thread about Sprint pushing the Spark update to the G2. I pray that you are correct and that we will see an update for Spark soon, since I work in NYC I would benefit from this.
Will Sprint push an update for Nexus I was under the impression that only updates through Google will fall through. I mean isn't this the reason why us T-Mobile users are sh out of luck when it comes to WiFi calling?
This is speculation and not fact. Would love for Sprint users to benefit especially since their 3G sucks

PS what is spark exactly is it like LTE just better? Is it exclusive to only Sprint or would other carriers likely be adapting to superior data?

Spark is simply a term Sprint drummed up for their Tri-Band LTE. Currently LTE is only on one band so when they are all enabled you are supposed to get LTE speeds upwards of 50Mbps or more.

Spark is Band 41 TDD-LTE which Sprint has been deploying for the better part of the last year over the existing Clearwire Wimax network. Band 41 TDD-LTE uses 20mhz TDD carriers in a 3:2 configuration which is slightly superior to a 10x10 FDD-LTE configuration on the downlink side and slightly weaker on the uplink. Theoretical max is ~90/25 but Sprint advertises 50-60 and provisions their sites for that speed.
Current Sprint LTE is on FDD-LTE 1900 PCS G block using a 5x5mhz configurations with theoretical max of 37.5/12 DL-UL. The other is FDD-LTE on eSMR 800 mhz which is either 3x3 mhz in areas with spectrum squatters or public safety rebanding or 5x5 mhz in areas with no spectrum squatters and public safety cleared.
LTE 800 gives the coverage aspect while Band 41 TDD-LTE is "Spark".
LTE 800/1900 =/= Spark
TDD-LTE 2500 = Spark

52nd and Lex for me and my LTE doesn't really work at my desk. It shows I am connect to LTE but when I run a speedtest or try and load say FB, it says no connection. I have to switch it over to 3G and then my data starts workiing again, its kinda annoying actually.

Experiencing same thing, brand new T-Mo N6.....subd for more info
Same thing is happening to me. I've tested my phone on both T-Mobile and Verizon; same thing happens. I'm getting similar signal strength to a MotoX (2nd gen) on Verizon as well. However, in my battery stats, it's a blood bath. I have only gotten it to go green for a slither of that.
Seems typical for a Nexus. Nexus 5 did/does the same thing and it was never fixed.
I'm having the same issue but on ATT.
Exact same issue. I'm on Verizon. I was just thinking of posting the same thing, so thanks for jumping on this.
What's weird is that my N6 will show good signal in my room, but often times when I try to call someone, I hear no ringing and the call does not connect. A minute later, it will show that I have no signal.
I ran into another similar issue at the mall the other day. It was showing that I had good signal (LTE), but try as I might I couldn't get any webpages to load. Initially I thought it might have something to do with how many people were at the mall (this was on Black Friday), but I borrowed my dad's Moto X (also on Verizon) and had no problems loading webpages instantly. At this point, not sure if I have a defective unit, or do all N6 have this issue.
My second n6 first one had this issue and T-Mobile did trouble shooting the told me to exchange it. Second one not much better. Right now have no signal and have to switch it to 2g for calls WiFi for data.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the initial setup. When I receive my Nexus 6 on Thursday I'm going to put my existing Verizon Sim card in before even booting the phone up for the first time. Not sure if it makes any difference here..... Our if any of you have tried a factory reset?

Same type of thing on Sprint. Sometimes after a reboot it re activates and takes like 5 Mins. But signal jumps in and out often.

I have performed a full factory reset (back to stock, flashed stock images, etc.); still doesn't make a difference.
Hmmm.... Well hopefully a software update will fix it. I seem to remember the Nexus 5 getting am update that fixed some Sprint signal issues.

don't know if this will help, but... when i received my N6 the Cellular Network Setting (Settings->More->Celluar Network->Preferred Network Type) was set to Global and battery stats indicated i had poor signal (and occasionally it was bad.) i changed the setting to LTE (recommended) and signal was better and battery stats showed a good signal (e.g., no more red/orange) throughout the day

I have tried both Global and LTE; neither seem to behave differently on Verizon. I'm actually RMA'ing my N6 in hopes that its hardware.
I just got my N6 from the GPS and activated on Verizon last night. Same thing with the signal going in and out without moving at all. Really odd, never had a phone do this. It shows signal more often, than not, but I am having the same problem....
There are a few threads on this from various carriers. This is the first I've seen people with VZW chiming in. It's definitely something with the N6, and if it's hardware then it needs to be recalled with that many people having this issue. My thoughts are its software. Could be a settings issue too, but I've tried various APNs. Tmo told me to call CS, but since I don't have another phone to call from I'll probably go into a store. They won't fix it though, even a replacement won't. Someone's already tried to work with CS and got a replacement that had the same issue. I also had another N6 from Moto's store that I returned, which had the same issue.

I'm RMA'ing my N6 from Google. Doubt it will be fixed though.
However, I think it's something on Verizon's end; I feel like it might be related to the N6 not being sold by Verizon yet, and when it is officially sold by Verizon, these issues will lessen. I've seen plenty of people say this phone gets superior reception. I'm positive it's Verizon's fault.
Same issue as everyone else - on T-Mobile. I only have the issue on LTE, though. The ASU bumps up to 99 every few minutes and then drops back down. No such problem on 3G.

In an early post you said you tested on VZW and TMO and had the same issue...but you think it's something on VZW end? The only issue I think VZW customers will encounter is voice and data working at the same time, until they update it. The signal issue is happening on all carriers. Maybe not to everyone, but more than enough for there to be an issue that can't be cast at the carriers imo.

I think it's happening more on Verizon. People I've talked to who have this issue tend to be on Verizon.

Anyone having signal issues?

I was walking around disney yesterday and my wife had almost full bars on her s7 edge and mine had no service, I had to put into airplane mode and then turn the signal back on for it to maybe work that didnt always work either.
I've got great signal on mine so far. There's a post on Reddit with a couple people also saying they have a bad signal. But everyone else says their signal is better than what they had previously.
I have a friend who also upgraded to the Note 7 from the Note 3 and he said he's getting better signal as well. There are always going to be a few faulty devices. Might want to take it back and exchange it if you suspect a faulty device.

Agreed
Mine falls back to no service where I don't think it should. It's like it's so slow to switch towers to where it just goes to no service until it latches onto something else or until airplane mode is toggled.

Same signal problem hadNote 5 and Note 7. The Galaxy note 5 switch towers fast. NOTE 7 stay in 4g or no signal .
Mine has done that once. Had to restart phone. Wouldn't connect even though I could see all the carriers.

Mine is having issues with carrier aggregation. When the phone is connected to b12, and b4. B12 alone is giving sub 1mb speeds, and b4 is over 20mb. B12 with B4 CA is giving the same speeds as just B12. Below is a screenshot of the service menu.

Note 7 tmobile no signal Had to restart phone
Note 5 tmobile Full signal
I've had a lot better service. I came from the iPhone 6s+, which I would say had the best signal reception of any phone that I've ever used. I've used it side by side with the iPhone 6, 5s, note 5, note 4, nexus 6, nexus 5x, LG G5, etc... Point is that this phone blows out other devices in comparison with signal reception. I'd say to hit up tmobile and get them to exchange it. Ive had to do it before with my old nexus 6. I didnt really even need to prove anything either. They took my word for it since I could make it happen on command and sent me a new device the next day. You may have some luck with the next device that you receive.
I'm having issues with carrier aggregation, where the phone is connected to band 12, and CA with band 4. Band 4 is showing a signal of 130db using ca. In the same location if I directly connect to band 4 the db will be 109db.

I'm having the same kinds of signal issues with mine as well. If I leave an area where I've been connected to wifi, then I lose all cellular signals. Even toggling airplane mode won't always get a connection back for me. Sometimes the first toggle will appear to at least get something back, but it takes a second one to get data back.
Hopefully the first round of updates will get things fixed.

Yesterday I lost LTE, could only make calls and text, no data whatsoever. Checked Mobile Networks / Network Mode, Network Operations, APN's. All good. Called T-mobile to complain, tried walking me through the same stuff. Restarted phone numerous times. Then drove over 30 miles(I assume moved towers) and still had no data, restarted, nothing. Went and ended up getting a new Note7 from tmobile on exchange(and new sim), now I am randomly still loosing signal and having to restart to regain LTE which didn't work with the previous phone. I am indoors though, so I am not sure wtf is going on. Super annoying. We shall see.
Whenever I enter the underground parking of my condo building, note 7 lost signl completely. I have an old note 4 with a different sim, full bar 4g LTE. Called tmobile, they said note 7 is running on 1900mhz while note 4 is on 700mhz. 1st tech said they already started working on updating towers. Few days later, 2nd tech was not aware of any work in progress. And.recommended.me to swith to a lower connection 2g/3g when i enter garage!
The Note 7 also supports band 12 / 700MHz, so it sounds like typical CS BS.

Did you use smart switch to move your data from one to another? Even a rep at T-mobile told me he noticed issues when using it. Need to do a hard reset to fix it.

Try a Factory Reset. The Smart Switch may have influenced your configuration.
Personally I came from an iPhone 6S Plus. My service was spotty constantly losing Data and dropping to GPRS in one situation. I have had 100% LTE coverage here in Sacramento since switching and it's been the best phone and decision I have made.

I did use smart switch. Thanks for the feedback. I'll give it a go if issues persist. Usually I would hard reset as a last resort but i was pissed.

I am a Equal Opportunity Phone user. I work for a Geeky/Media Company so we cover all the gadgets and what not. I try all the new hardware. DXRacer is actually sending me a chair to test now. I know the rules so I won't link it but it gives me a lot of chances to test new hardware for free.

Question 5G performance

This Pixel 7 is the first 5G capable phone I have owned. The 5G is so slow as to be unusable. I am in middle Tennessee and RedPocket is my provider, using the AT&T network. I have disabled 5G and my speed/connection is very good.
When 5G is enabled I do have a strong signal according to the signal meter icon. But pages load in "spurts". The browser will take several seconds to make the initial connection and then as the page loads it will pause while more data is downloaded. Using 4G pages load very quickly.
Is this because I'm using a MVNO (RedPocket) or is something else going on?

It could be either or both. MVNOs are de-prioritized which, depending on the network traffic where you are, could mean terrible speeds or speeds just as good as the provider's tier one post-pay accounts.
I, too, am new to 5G and using Boost (an AT&T MVNO) until the trial period runs out and I move to Mint (TMO). My 5G performance is fine; it's not faster or slower than the exact same 4G service from my Pixel 3.
I'm going to give Tello Mobile a try. They use the Tmobile network. I will report back.
I got activated with Tello using an esim. I've only used them a few minutes but everything looks good so far.
The issue with AT&T is that they don't use all of their brands for 5G so LTE can be much faster than 5G. T-Mobile has crazy good 5G speeds if you live where they have midband. I have Tello as well as SafeLink on AT&T and I have found that AT&T has better latency, T-Mobile has much better speeds, and AT&T tends to have the stronger signal in the Denver area as well.
I use my SafeLink pSIM for data and the Tello eSIM for everything else usually.
This was on my drive home over the weekend, going through Joplin, MO. Not too bad in a larger city. My P6 didn't hit 100 down just 2 weeks ago at the same spot.

No problems here, with Cosmote carrier in Greece.
I would raise the issue of low speeds with my carrier
Apparently there was an update needed, my speed on the AT&T network is now as expected. I did not change anything (that I know of). I'm going to stick with RedPocket rather than Tello due to better coverage in my area with AT&T.

Indeed. But 1Gbit in the air, is fine for me.
Just got the pixel 7 and my 5G is all over the place. I get 1 bar 5G UC, indicating poor signal but will go to full bars from time to time. Whats weird is that if i make a call or receive a call it will jump to full bars. If i switch from wifi to mobile or restart the phone it will give me full bars and drop to 1 bar soon after.
I've called tmobile and they had me upgrade to a new 5G sim but it didnt fix anything. My previous phone was OnePlus 8t 5G and had no issues with 5G. All other 5g phones at home get full bars, the tmobile tower is about 50 yards from my home.
Thinking about returning the phone and keeping the One Plus until Pixel 8 or until Pixel 7 issues are sorted out. I might try to get another Pixel 7 sent to me try out. This P7 has a August build date, maybe a more recent build will not have this issue.
After my Tello experiment my AT&T started working reliably. I would say give it a day and see if it gets sorted out.

Is your service usable? Are your speeds acceptable? Bars mean nothing. We really should get rid of them in favor of something that just shows whether you have a network connection or not because these days with multiple carrier aggregation, bars are never correct.

Boost was Sprint, which has been swallowed up by T-Mobile and that CDMA network shut down. At this point Boost is T-Mobile, not ATT. If the phone you purchased was factory unlocked then you have been using 5G since day one, unless it defaults to 4G. If the phone is ATT phone then you would be better served by Cricket which uses the ATT network. Since you have a Google device why not go with Google Fi their plans are nominally priced. Although when they first started offering service they were trying to be something for everyone by using all gsm services. Most coverage is by T-MOBILE today.

Boost offers AT&T as well...
If you order from www.boostmobile.com it is T-Mobile. If you order from my.boostmobile.com or deals.boostmobile.com, it is AT&T. You can also tell by your SIM card - if it's orange or white, it's T-Mobile. If it's black, it's AT&T.
Boost's AT&T SIM even has one of the best deals around right now - 30GB for $25 a month with no need to buy multiple months and unlimited at 512kbps after that (which is actually usable). They even have an app that lets you watch ads and spin the prize wheel each day towards free service plus third party offers like installing and playing games. I've already racked up $38 worth of bill credits since I signed up on the 27th.

It's weird that so many have reported this while so many of us have reported we don't have that problem. I have tried the phone on three different networks and have been pleased with the modem. I have the Pro though, maybe there's something different with the reception although I've seen complaints about it too.
I'm pulling almost 1200 mbps on TMobile by my house on p7.
I turned off 5G altogether and just use LTE because I was having intermittent data connection issues. I haven't had any connection issues since turning 5G off. Sucks but it is what it is, I guess. I'm on T-Mobile in a high 5G area as well.
AT&T may throttle your provider speed during peak time...test the area at different time of the day and see...why own this phone and use 4G or LTE...it almost a sin
