[Q] Error updating firmware - Moto X Q&A

Today i downgraded my moto x to 4.2.2 because i had rooted it and wanted to return it to stock and the ROM for my country wasnt abailable on kit kat, now i tried to upload it again to kit kat and the update sent me to fastboot where i got an error message which said the following
"downgraded security version update gpt_main version failed
Failed to hab check for gpt_backup: 0x35
CId Read Failure
Invalid CID status 0x69
CustomerID error. Contact Dealer: 0xdead
No SP partition found"
Anybody knows what this means? any help is apreciated!
Another thing is that my bootloader shows up like locked which is weird because its actually unlocked

What were you on before you downgraded?

This sounds like the infamous downgrade brick?

I downgraded with RSD erasing the "gpt" and "motoboot" lines from the default_flash so i could do it, later on i downloaded de 4.4.2 directly from the phone and once it finished downloading it started updating and sent me directly to fastboot showing this error.
the firmware that i downloaded to do the downgrade was this "Blur_Version.139.12.35.ghost_row.Personal.en. AR"
The bootloader is unlocked and showing locked .
unfourtunatly i couldnt find a 4.4 firmware for my carrier so i wasnt able to find a kit kat firmware to flash and see if i could get it running, i tried with another firmware from the region where i live and flashed it but couldnt make it work with RSD nor fastboot.

Yup, been many debates on here about whether its safe to downgrade from 4.4.2 or not.....and I've read enough here now that I simply advise not to. Period. Unless you can afford a replacement easily....in case bad things happen.
Many disagree, but I stand by this advice.
Where are you at currently?? You can beat up or not? Have you tried reflashing 4.4.2? Or what have you tried?
Anyway, before doing anything else...I suggest reading the thread about how to unbrick. I don't know the link off hand....but it may help.
Good luck. ?

I am in desperate need of this firmware, currently in a bootloader loop, cannot get to recovery or anything else. Have tried flashing the original stock firmware via RSD Lite and Moto X Toolkit, but I get the following message:
Failed to hab check for gpt_main: 0x35
Failed to hab check for gpt_backup: 0x35

Invalid CID status 0x69
CustomerID error. Contact Dealer. 0xdead

Can anyone provide the firmware?
So even with bootloader you can't flash recovery and flash anything? Is your bootloader locked?

My bootloader was unlocked, but after trying to flash a firmware via RSD Lite, I cannot flash anything and it's stuck in bootloader, and it says it's locked now. Though I never locked it. If I try to flash a system.img or boot.img or recovery.img it gives me errors about not having permissions. From what I understand I need to flash the camera update firmware, since that's what the OTA was that I was trying to install. Scoured the internet for that camera update firmware, can't find it anywhere except sbf.droid-developers.org and the site is down currently.
Have you tries unlocking the bootloader again?

theres a stock odex adn deodexed rom on this forum somehwere, I got it lastnight and downloaded it. It has an xbin in the odex though, i think that is keeping the ota form flashing. but you can atleast flash that rom to get a working phone again. thats what I had to do that last night. Ill see if I can find a link to it. if not I will post it on my drive.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2499594 here it is. flash the odexed worked for me. but i still cant get the kitkat ota to flash even with using the revercory image that is in the kitkat ota with this rom. I think the xbin or maybe build prop in this rom may be preventing the kitkat ota to flash,

this is where the factory image to rsdlite back should be, http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
but they had hdd crashes as noted on that site. hopefuly they can recover the data and have the images because i searched everywhere and they are the only one anyone links to for rsdlite images.

If you have 4.4.2 and brick your device downgrading, can it be recovered?

I was Just curious. I recently used the chinese site to unlock my bootloader, and now running 4.4.2 with no problem. I keep reading that due to the bootloader upgrade in 4.4.2 that any attempt to downgrade will brick the device. For people who are unlocked if they do this downgrade and brick their device are they able to recover their device with any tools like RSD lite? Or is the brick from downgrading a hard brick and their moto x becomes a complete paper weight.
It MAY be recoverable. There is a thread with a method to recover, but its not 100% guaranteed to work.
Buy why are you asking? If you already know you'll brick by trying to downgrade, then why even try it. I swear some people want to brick their phone.
This is why I always keep at least one backup from when I first unlock and root my phones. This way, if something happens I just go back to the first backup.

You can't restore a backup on a bricked phone. Wish it was that easy.....I'd be real brave with what i flashed if you could.

Goes to show you how often I've bricked phones. I soft bricked my Nexus a few times but was always able to revert to a previous backup. Ways thought it was the same for a hard brick.

I guess it would. LOL Like I said, I've never experienced a hard brick so I've always been able to revert back. Which is why I didn't know. I try to be careful when flashing things.
As I bought my device(xt1052) there was 4.4.2 preinstalled. then I tried 4.2.2 T-Mobile ROM. And it works very good. Just don't forget to disable Motorola ota.. If I want kitkat rom, then I simply install it with twrp and all good again..
Here my steps;
Unlock bootloader
Flash system.img and boot.img and erase userdata and use 4.4.2 or 4.2.2 rom whatever you want.
I don't understand why people downgrade their bootloaders. I stopped play with bootloader since I bricked 2x HTC magic years ago

no he is fine he stated that he is on 4.4.2 but he installed a Rom that was 4.4 so he wont get a OTA. because it reality his phone is still on 4.4.2 just with a 4.4 rom.
if you hard brick your moto x there is a recovery thread and most of the time people have been able to get there devices working again it just takes some time and being able to follow directions very well.
as for people who want 4.2.2 or 4.4 and are on 4.4.2 i would recommend just finding a custom for that is 4.2.2 or 4.4 and installing that. by doing this you dont have to worry about the OTA update issue or even worry about bricking your moto x when trying to downgrade because you will still be on 4.4.2 just with a custom rom for another android version.
all in all good luck every one

He flashed 4.2.2, but he didn't try to downgrade the bootloader (motoboot.img) or flash any of the secure elements (gpt.img).
That's the beauty of manual flashing. Using RSDLite to downgrade = automatic brick since it flashes everything or tries to anyway.

[Q] Upgrading to 4.4.4 from 4.4.2. Help.

Hello, I have made some searches but I couldn't find a easy answer.
My phone version es XT1058. I want to have a International version Android system. Not from my carrier.
I have made this on my Moto G, and on several phones. But reading some say I can brick my device.
Any clear instructions? Please. All I want is 4.4.4 ALL STOCK.
Right now my device is ALL STOCK. Locked BT, I tried going to the Moto Website and I was getting a Error loading the page. Weird.
If you are not rooted, and never have been, then your carrier just hasn't pushed out the update yet. There's nothing you can do but wait if that's the case.
And what exactly are you trying to flash? If there's no ota for your device yet....there likely are no sbf files yet either.
Also, flashing an international firmware could cause you all sorts of issues, unless you've read that others on your same device have done it successfully. And what are you calling international firmware?
?

Btw, I'm pretty sure you can't flash other carriers firmware with a locked bootloader.

If u had read b4 dng this you would have noticed that downgrading bootloader crashes the phone and results into hardbrick.. kitkat, Lollipop as well as marshmallow all have diff versions of bootloader.. wen you flash them you have to keep in mind not to flash 2 commands for bootloader

wellcome to the club. put the phone in your drawer and say "Rest in Peace"
put your phone away from dust and water, and wait till anyone or motorola comes with the solution...
i just did this yesterday to one family's phone, and then BAM. dead. too bad i didn't knew about this issue from downgrading from 6.0
Yeah I had experienced same thing 2 months before. No solution other than motherboard replacement.

OTA 9.0 Update RET EU

Did someone in the RETEU Channel allready have this ?
I dont see it on lolinet.
Also. Is it possible that i flash a RETUS or DTEU image towards my phone ? Do i still get the RET EU updates or does it not matter?
Kind regards and thanks !
You won't be able to flash the boot.img from RETUS or the international version and you won't get OTA updates if you have an unlocked bootloader.
If it's not in the firmware list yet, the update likely isn't out yet. I'm using a German Moto G6 with the ALI_RETAIL_9.0_PPS29.55-24_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC firmware and it works really well.
@HeavyHDx Idid the same, but my device got the reteu PIE upgrade today.

Did you end up getting the update? Sadly the firmware isn't on lolinet yet (the hell kind of name is that anyway?)
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/ali/official/RETEU/
Downgrading to 8.0 and locking the bootloader won't work since even an unlocked bootloader won't allow you to install older versions. I'm not sure if you can actually get OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader.
Does anyone have the OTA package? It's still nowhere to be found and Motorola support can't provide me with the firmware file unfortunately.

Ok so this is disappointing, I'm still getting "(bootloader) Image signed with key bad key" on boot.img even though this is definitely the right version for my phone (XT1925-5 RETEU). Any ideas? I've tried literally every boot.img that's available from that site and none worked. I want to relock my bootloader to give the phone to someone else who needs updates to work.

Bad key is normal. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, it just means your bootloader is unlocked. You can also take OTAs with an unlocked bootloader. The bootloader and gpt.bin refusing to flash is also normal. Bootloader's don't allow downgrades, so it keeps the most recent one. You can skip it if that happens. Just flash everything else in order. You can also downgrade. However, if you flash a firmware that's too old, sometimes the radio or touchscreen won't work. If that happens, just flash a more recent firmware. (Ex. Instead of using the first Oreo firmware, use the latest Oreo release.)
And is relocking the bootloader possible at all?
HeavyHDx said:

It's possible, but I wouldn't recommend doing it. If one thing about the system is off, it'll lock you into read only mode, which will brick the phone. Not even stock firmware can flash in read only. I'm also uncertain of the exact commands to do it. I'd tell you how if I knew. Motorola has their own set of commands they like to use for it.
