Hey there.. Just got a note 3 on 4.2.2 Is there a root method AT ALL? Or anything I can do? Or am I doomed to a truly stock device?
4.2.2 or 4.4.2
4.2.2=yes. kingo root
4.4.2= doomed for now.
And please remember that questions go in the QA section.

4.4.2 is currently doomed. There is a bounty out though for a full unlock and root.
how much you got it for? if you got it full price off contract, you should return it and get the tmobile one. that one has root and unlocked bootloader.

I got it as an upgrade since I have AT&T... This is a REAL bummer.. I always root or jailbreak my phones..
The N3 (att) is an amazing phone ruined with a locked bootloader

No custom recoveries if the bootloader is locked.

As far as I'm concerned this is a fantastic device. If you happen to be on 4.3, it's better now because you can root it. 4.4, you can't; not yet at least. Personally I'm got mine last month on 4.3, rooted it.
Either way, it's an outstanding device with a temporary hiccup. Every device has at least one.

The original version of Kingo is not approved. The current version has no issues. I used it and many others have. If you are worried about sending out information, then any APP you have installed is a potential threat. They do not have to list all the requirements an app needs in the store.
If you download Kingo to your PC and start to install it there is a terms of service you have to agree to. In that TOS on line 5 the makers of Kings state they do not remove, copy, or send any data from your PC or device to be rooted.
That being said if they are found to be sending any sort of data or info then you can sue them for Violation of that term.
Kingo is the only safe and brick/mistake proof method for MJ5 right now and many of us have used it with no issues.
Does Kingo trip the the KNOX flag? I really want to root this device and get rid of some of the bloatware on it. BUT since its only about 3 days old and I have a contract I don't want to make it un-replaceable if something else happens.
Also I read that 4.4 will be released... Ive been with ATT for years and have found them to be a bit slow on updates. Will we get 4.4 or not?
Thanks

Kingo does not trip KNOX. It also has the ability to be unrooted by reconnecting to PC and unrooting or Go into SU on the phone and select unroot. Then the phone will be as though you never rooted it. I have confirmed this works on MJ5 as well.
As for 4.4, I doubt you will see it on the N3. Samsung likes to hold out for the next device for the new Android version. So if they make a Note 4 then 4.4 will be released to it. The only chance N3 users have for 4.4 is if the Bootloader is ever unlocked or use Safestrap once somebody makes a ROM based on KitKat.
I'd argue we Will see kitkat myself. This is the best att has right now IMHO. And of wager at lest one more major update.

I heard Kingo is a malware app. Can anybody confirm? Some of the rumors I heard is that your imei is send to a server in China.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
That was an older version, XDA has approved of the current version. Should be in another thread . or one of the other umpteen million threads on this subject. Regardless many have used it including myself with no issue. Even if it did send your IEMI somewhere there is nothing they can do with it. Only the original owner of the phone can add or remove it from a blacklist.
This process uses the RDLV method to get root on MJ5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
Kingo maintains that they're legit, and a lot of people have used it here without problems.
You should have used SuperSU survival mode (others here have claimed it worked for getting the OTA update to MJ5 while keeping root).
Please excuse if this has been beaten to death. I've spent the last hour reading and reading an I've just gotten confused. I was heavily into the Android world for quite a while but have been out of it for a couple years. I bought my son a Droid Mini which from what I understand is pretty much the same thing as a Moto X. In the settings menu it says Android Version 4.4 Kernal Version 3.4.42-gfae57e0. I just need to root it. I'm not concerned about flashing ROMs, just need root for an app that requires it. Is it possible or do I need to get a different phone? I must have a root. Again please excuse the noob question but I've gotten a headache trying to make heads or tales of it.

No it is not possible to root 4.4 however you have an option there is a guy in China selling bootlloader unlock codes I bought mine and unlocked there are several threads on this site so check it out. The other option is to return the phone and get one you can root or a dev model.

Under Android version it says 4.4. But is also says no software updates are available.... Kernal version says 3.4.42 that makes a difference. Guess the question is do I have 4.4 or 4.4.2. If .2 is the latest it should show under updates correct? Or maybe not since it's a Mini and not an X?

Don't give this guy false hope without reading the OP. He does not have a moto x, He has a droid mini. The droid line cannot be downgraded from 4.4 to 4.2.2, thus his only option is to use the shady Chinese unlockers.

You should get your rooting advice from this area of the forums, it will more closly resemble the options you have available to your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra
VZW droid mini ,ultra, and maxx are all still on 4.4. They cannot be downgraded due to verizon locking the bootloader. You will get confused answers from the moto x owners, as they could downgrade from 4.4 to 4.2.2 and then keep root using some trickery.
While it is true that this trickery would work to on your droid mini if you hadnt yet updated to 4.4, there is no way to revert to 4.2.2 on your device. your best option getting an unlock code from a 3rd party (this voids your warranty)
consider if it is worth it to you
Good luck,
You can't root 4.4 the droid line doesn't have 4.4.2 yet so your on 4.4.
As for the guys being shady selling the code that is absolutely false. Many have bought the code they are very accommodating and helpful. As a matter of fact a few were not able to get the code for what ever reason and were refunded the money. As far as I'm concerned if you want root unlock the boot loader it ain't coming anytime soon.
And further questions should be asked in the ultra section the ultra maxx and mini are the same. The moto x is 99.9% the same but as you can see there are a few differences like they can downgrade 4.4.
As a matter of fact I'm typing this on my maxx running 4.4.2 ported from a moto x. That is what you can do with an unlocked boot loader.
It is possible! I am now the owner of a fully rooted Droid Mini XT1030 running stock 4.4. It took buying a code from the Chinese tab site and a whole lot of help from NWKENT. He should be nominated for some kind of an award. He took the time on a Sunday morning to talk me through it on the phone. He's a saint in my book.
Ok I'm about go insane I have just updated to the latest version for this phone Lolipop 5.0.2 and now I have no root and been trying to figure out how to get root or how to go back to a official version like 4.4.3 or 4.4.2 but I'm just so frustrated I can't focus or even read really feel like throwing this phone off a cliff... please help me btw I have tried KingRoot and it does work but once my phone turns off and back on it doesn't wanna work anymore any help is really appreciated maybe try to make it a little simpler for me to understand and my theory with KingRoot is that after the first use the second time around its like while KingRoot is trying to get root access during the process my phone just deletes kinguser because my es file explorer ask me if I want to delete the files that kinguser left behind.

Its very simple you'll see.
flash latest twrp recovery for sprint
boot in twrp recovery
exit twrp recovery
when trying to exit you'll be prompted to install root on the phone
select "yes"
wait for the phone to reboot
or
Flash any custom recovery of your choice, as long as its compatible with the sprint variant of M7
boot in your custom recovery
flash supersu2.46.zip in recovery
reboot
If your phone isn't already bootloader unlocked, you can't unlock it from htcdev.com since Verizon asked HTC to block bootloader unlock for their phones. In that case you will need to temp root your phone so you can s-off it and unlock it using sunshine. Once s-off and unlocked you can root using what said above.
everything explained here http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...root-root-method-bl-unlock-5-0-x-ota-t3122099
I hate Verizon.... And I can't afford sunshine right now so I'm stuck :c

Good luck selling the Verizon variant of the M7, you can get a brand new verizon htc one for 119$ off contract so I guess you could maybe have 60$ for a used one if its in mint condition. Trading it for another phone would be a better idea imo if you are tired of this phone. I would simply buy sunshine and keep using this one, but thats only my opinon, I don't see the point in changing a 2013 phone for another 2013 phone...Its not like if it was an upgrade....

Are people still working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?
If yes, how's it going?
I had a G870F but sent it swimming on 20m deep for three weeks. Needless to say it didn't survive.
Found the G870A and thought it was a bargain, however . . .
Pretty much a lost cause, most devs have moved on.
So the answer is not so straight forward. The current v 5.1 and above for the AT&T phones are not currently rootable. If you find a used or remanufactured S5 or S5 Active with 4.2 you will be in luck. I just had a problem with my Active found a replacement on the most popular buying and selling web site for around $230. Just make sure it has not been updated. If the seller is advertising it as 4.2 and you get it with 5.0 they must take it back if it's not what was advertised. Hope this helps.
If you want an S5 to tinker with you should get a tmobile variant the SM-G900T, or the international SM-G900M since the active model is basically a carrier exclusive they dont have any international ones that im aware of.
I dont understand the question of OP
I used a popular search and found rooted firmwares for the 870A.
Several people who replied have in their sigs that they have a rooted s5 Active..... I would think that to mean the phone has been "cracked" and isn't a lost cause.

When you update the firmware, it automatically updates the bootloader. Once that bootloader has been updated, it's locked down. No downgrading firmwares, rooting, or installing custom recoveries.

Yeah, that's basically what I gathered after a lot of research online.
Some claim it can be done but when trying the method/software, it doesn't work.
I just wanted to double check since there is a lot of expert knowledge in this forum.
One thing i've been thinking though (not that I can do it): how about picking the phone apart
and wiping/replacing the bootloader manually?

Both are locked down. AT&T and Samsung are being jerks to us and not even letting us have a developer phone to try to use like Verizon had.

Nope can't because of locked bootloader. The best thing you could do is too root with towelroot and then flash safestrap and install a custom rom from there.
