This feeling isn't new--I've been unhappy with the Nexus 4 since it arrived. It's the only phone I've ever owned that I would call "beautiful", but its design, hardware, and low-level software problems are ridiculous. But I'm not going to talk about muted speakers, phone sliding off surfaces, 3G or Wifi problems, or batteries that won't charge. I'd like to tell you about the power button.
My power button got harder and harder to press over time, eventually becoming completely impossible. The repair was cheap. But what makes me so angry is that though I never got my phone wet, the button was corroded by water.
How did this problem occur? I live in a warm and humid climate. I keep the phone in my pocket. In the gym, I took precautions (using a case and turning the open part of the case *away* from my body). But as many of you know, the Nexus 4 gets ridiculously hot, especially gaming (or when using GPU+gps+data at the same time). It was basically impossible not to sweat on this phone. And it broke as a result.
In short, LG and Google designed a phone that makes its users really hot, yet corrodes and fails if you keep it in a sweaty pocket.

Yeah i expected also when i bought the nexus 4 that everything would be good since google make the system for nexus 4 but my problem was that wifi was really bad and the phone was slippery but i fixed that with an anti slip protector for the back. I also have the first revision of nexus 4 and i don't have too much trouble. The button can get corroded by water if its humid or if its really cold and laying by the window (noticed that with my tablet) that the battery won't charge could aoso be the usb port. Gaming goes also hot with gps and data but then you need to try an custom rom with HellsDoctor or Hellscore they keep it pretty cool all the time and good battery usage.
I agree with you That lg and google designed a phone that makes it users really hot cause even on stock normal browsing made my phone really hot. I just hope that google will fix all those software problems with 4.4.3 or even 5. And is your phone now broken?
broken back
The problem is one way or another nexus 4 back will be cracked and now it's almost impossible to see nexus 4 with not broken back.
Errr...what did you expect, that quad core CPU and rather powerful GPU cranked in small phone body will be cold on heavy usage???

Nope, my N4 is still without scratch after 10 months. Never dropped it.
Talking about problems that this device "have", I had few android phones and with every phone there were some problems. There is no phone on this planet that is perfect so it is either live with that or just don't buy smartphones (or any other phones).
Great for you.. Though cracked I love this phone
Well this probablly a 1/100000 case.
Realistic way of solving: Don't drive up design costs for any unprobable usages losing millions of potential customers

Where is your ambition, and how can you be satisfied with such pathetic design problems? Certainly they are difficult problems, but other manufacturers have managed to solve them. Have you never used a HTC or Samsung? My HTC doesn't overheat to that degree, even though it has an extremely conductive metal body.

Indeed, before I sold my Nexus 4 (last night), I had planned to put it beneath a kettle to boil water. Above this would be a turbine, generating electricity during to save money on my utilities bills. And plugged in to this power source would be a USB cable, to keep the Nexus 4 charged. Thus, the Nexus 4 is inefficient beyond the allowed limits of physics, creating a paradox that allows perpetual free energy.
But maybe that was just my N4--yours may not work for this.

Do you not think a phone (a very hot-running phone) should continue to work after being carried in jeans pockets? Is it normal to fail?
I highly doubt that it can corrode from just a sweaty tshirt...(i work on a car wash,my phone gets more that that and still works perfect)

I feel sorry for the forum of your next phone
Nexus 4 is my first and will be my last Nexus phone....until Google get it's **** together, i'll stick with Samsung. I was much happier with my Note 2....even though it was too big.
The thing that bothers me the most is the thing the should be the best --- screen. The IPS panel has good colors once PA_Halfbreed is applied, but it looks TFT-ish (Cheap) in dark rooms. In medium light the screen is wonderful - like OLED. And then outside it is too reflective and not bright even on max brightness....700 nits my ass
Vertical angles good....horizontal angles ok.....45 degree horizontal angles.....ZERO

I saw some post on some Android blog saying someones nexus 4 cracked because of temperature change. That was ridiculous for me, cuz many other phones have gorilla glass 2 on their displays which gets hot and nothing happens. What can be different in glass between front and back of the device?
Also this guy said it cracked while charging:
Hating or true?
Tell me what you think please.
People drop them and then use this as a handy excuse to try and get a new phone.
Same point of view as me
yeah i dont think so, sounds like a scam. it would take some serious heat to crack the glass.
Phaha, idiot dropped it look at the cracking... cant believe some people would be cheeky to claim it was the phones fault they dropped it, **** happens but dont try and run it down like this... Glad this Nexus is doing well, so well that people have to BS issues haha! Only the speaker really is a fault but whether its software or hardware is yet to be know .
Still waiting to be able to order mine .
How much would it need to warm up? Like 110*C? Strange as hell.
If it was temperature change it would have to be from Quadrant to snow in Ojmiakon, right?
i think the back glass isnt gorilla glass

An extreme enough temperature change could do that, but there would likely have to be a pre-exisiting defect of some sort. Doesn't take much, a small pit, or the glass back not being aligned properly around the camera lens. That said, I've only ever experienced that with a car windshield or two, not my N4.

I hear people in this forum and many blog sites say it is. But didn't Phil from androidcentral confirm from LG that it is not gorilla glass. He went to where this and the optimus G were made and LG said that it is not gorilla glass on the back, its not glass.
That's interesting. But even if it's not gg it shouldn't break because of heat, right?
Wysyłane z mojego GT-I9100 za pomocą Tapatalk 2
Not if its not real or close to real glass, if its not as good as dispersing heat away from the which I assume is the battery overheating from recharge. Then yes it could possibly crack. However I charge using the included cable and never felt the screen get hot. I think it cracking from heat is real possibility depending what the composition on the back really is.
I keep hearing BS complaints about this phone. I have had 0 problems, no yellow tint, glass doesn't crack or scratch, no software or signal issues. I seriously think people just make **** up in their head or they don't actually own a N4 that are saying these things. I was one of the first to get this phone and its the best phone in quality and performance that I have used. I've had a int. HTC one x, brother has s3, sister has iPhone 5 and I had a gnex before the one x. This phone us ridiculous for $299

However, I do think it had to have been more than a gently placing the phone on the stone countertop. It HAD to be.

I think if the phone got hot enough to break the glass it would not have survived it. The most components will take serious damage from the heat also, not only the glass.
It MIGHT be that a rapid temperature change from hot to cold or vice versa could cause the glass to crack. To crack, not to shatter like the one in die video.

Yes, because site admins are always right about everything all the time. This whole heat shock stuff is nonsense. The phone doesn't get that hot, and room-temperature isn't that cold. At worst, Kellex had a defective phone. The glass either had a manufacturing problem or it was seated improperly. More likely, he broke it, since he also broke an Optimus G, which has been out longer than the Nexus 4 and hasn't had a big issue with this.
Look at THIS THREAD, if the glass has enough flex to creak, then it's got enough flex to handle any heat stress that doesn't involve you sticking your phone in boiling water after keeping the phone in your fridge.
As for some LG guy claiming the back isn't glass, I'm skeptical of that too. It might not be a proprietary Corning formula, but it's not plastic either, which means it's almost certainly SOME kind of glass.
I took a look at some photos on ifixit and think it might be a round of bad batteries. They have a fault and expand when they are rapid charged and is pushing against the glass causing it to crack. It be cool if one of those guys could open the phone and check the battery.

Just theorizing and repeating myself here, but there would have to be an internal defect in the glass, a microscopic chip, or the glass would have to be fitted poorly around the camera lens. The cut out for the lens is rounded, but it's still a weak spot so far as glass is concerned. Would likely need the perfect storm of events to make it happen.

Good theory.. Scares me a bit..
If they truly did cracks o easily I'm sure they are doing what they can to get Google to replace them..But if they refuse I guess opening it up to show the battery will be a good way to get momentum on the internet in case it really is happening.
But for all we know they dropped the phones and are just trying to get replacements.

There was another post where someone showed a cracked back on both the LG and the Nexus, they said it was where they were placing the phone onto a cold stone work surface causing a temperature difference. Although if the surface isn't smooth and they drop it with some force and a small raised area of stone meets the glass it would crack it and explain it.
If the phone got as hot as they claimed in that video the safety fuse in the battery should have cut it dead to avoid an explosion, but the phone appears to be working just fine.
The backs are breaking that much we know, then again so do the fronts break on all phones if treated badly. Glass can crack and break, what is hard to ever know from posts here is if the breakage is just in line with other devices and typical, or it is happening statistically more often on the Nexus 4. Of course people will complain of broken phones/glass, but no one is going to post here and complain the glass hasn't become cracked!
Regards
Phil
Ok, So I loved my nexus 4. I loved it so much I even bought a second one just to have for the hell of it. The last 5 monthes I have been boasting to friends and family how great this $349 phone was. That was until this morning.
I was on my back underneath my Jeep trying to hunt down a small coolant leak. The nexus sliped out of my pocket and landed on the driveway.
Since I was on my back. The distance from my front pant pocket, to the ground. Cant be any more then 5 inches. I heard it fall and I cringed. I knew for sure it was going to at least put a small scratch or scuff in my beloved phone. I picked it up to examine the damage and to my surprise the whole back was cracked.
Seriously how the hell can that have happend from such a low fall? What the hell google!
So I called google hoping they might take it in as a warranty fix. Well I got the no sorry we cant help answer I knew was coming.
Next I was on the phone with LG. LG also said no. If it's cracked it's not covered. However they will fix it for a fee. I wont know how much until they see it first.
So now I'm using my other nexus 4. However I'm not so stoked about using the nexus 4 anymore.

Hey come on now! A cell phone should not break from falling 5 inches.
Get a new back on eBay and replace it yourself. Also, stop complaining; it's made of glass, not unobtainium.
This is inaccurate and you need to tell the truth about how it fell and how far not make up stories. First, your front pockets should be generally in the front, meaning if the phone did fall out of your pocket, it would have slid down your leg, around the curve of your thigh and landed most likely on the side. Second, we see a clear point of impact on this crack which is done by a focused blow to one area not a blow over the entire phone.

Alright Sherlock coming out of nowhere calling people liars ...
His scenario makes perfect sense. Driveways are usually not flat surfaces so it could easily have hit a little pebble or micro bump on the driveway and caused such a crack.
I dropped mine on asphalt and it looks like someone tried to hammer a nail into the glass.

I am not coming out of nowhere, the story doesn't make a lick of sense no matter how you add it up. How did a guy who is working on his jeep have his phone slip out of his front pocket? What sort of jeep owner wears super baggy pants? Most blue jeans have tight enough pockets that this isn't an issue. But hey, feel free to believe what you want.

Concrete garage floors are not perfectly flat surfaces either especially when they tend not to be entirely clean and free of debris.
You are completely talking out of your ass and making no sense. Quit while you're waaay behind.
The height from which I dropped my phone is irrelevant, just providing some data on a phone falling on a surface perceived to be flat resulting in a crack that looks like it was caused by a single point impact. I thought that was clear.
Analogy - Nexus 4 = Penis

You have made more assumptions in your posts than a lawyer defending someone in a he said she said case... Not everyone has a garage. Not all jeep owners wear jeans everyday. I have had my phone slip out of my pocket plenty of times while I was laying down. You my friend should stop making accusations over stupid assumptions.
To the op I honestly think you are to blame for buying a phone made of glass and not getting a case... Fix it yourself like the other person said. Just watch a YouTube video of how to do it. And buy a case for your phone...

DO NOT SELF REPAIR YOUR GEAR.
You should return the watch to the store of origin requesting either a full refund or an exchange.
This is a repeat thread. This subject is being debated on another thread. IT APPEARS this COULD be a design fault. IF this is the case Samsung will need to recall all watches and resolve the situation.
I had some doubts about the IP rating of the gear. Now the more I read threads here from owners who share identical problems I am truly starting to get concerned that the Gear has one or two major design flaws. Second flaw being those exposed contacts at the back. Water or perspiration could cause a short.
Very mixed bag is the gear. Superb technology in some areas and absolutely useless in others.

Oh, you could place the watch on a tray, or in a bag, of rice in the sun, this will dry out the lens until the next time.
It's rating of IP55 so it should be water resistant. I haven't gotten much 'mileage' with mine on the outdoors to merit this. And I'm with the guy^ you should just return it right away.
Hopefully, people having problems with theirs get resolved quickly while it's still under warranty.

You should return the watch to the store of origin requesting either a full refund or an exchange.
This is a repeat thread. This subject is being debated on another thread. IT APPEARS this COULD be a design fault. IF this is the case Samsung will need to recall all watches and resolve the situation.

Yeah, i just spoke with them and they told me to send it back. I hope it's just a few of the units that are defect, so the new one i receive won't have the same problem. Or i'll just wait for them to send out fixed units.
if the weather is humid this will happen too, just imagine wearing glasses during really humid/hot days and they will form a fog and you wont see a thing lol, same with the gear is what I predict.
so solution is to either protect the camera when temperature/weather is suboptimal or wait till the moisture dries.
this is a first generation product, very likely they did not realize this
you guys might want to invest in this, seems that some cameras definitely go through this

My problem is that after entering a warmer environment, the fog is now water and is located inside the lens, so all my pictures are taken through a drop of water, smearing the picture.

I'm certain that it's from the cold weather, i haven't been near any water with it.
Here's a picture i took with the watch, quite blurry because there's dew on the inside:

Thanks for the heads-up.
I think I will take some precaution to guard the camera lens from getting too cold ...

Moisture in my camera as well - not related to cold
I had my Galaxy Gear Watch for two days before I started to see moisture forming in the lens. I believe the moisture came from the sweat from my skin. The watch never saw a wet environment; no rain, no water from washing hands, etc. After the third day the image was completely clouded and I could see actual water drops in the area of the lens. If I lightly pressed on the cover with the tiny hole in it behind the camera, water squirted out of the hole. It took about eight presses on the cover before no more water came out.
I let the watch sit for a day in the dry open air and the image remained clouded. I returned it to Best Buy and they replaced it. I bought the protection plan and told them I'd be back every time it gets clouded On the new watch I put a piece of clear tape over the hole after the watch sat in a low humidity area at room temp for a day.
I would love to know:
a) what is that hole in the cover behind the camera meant for?
b) why is the capsule that contains the camera not sealed?! Why would the design give up a place for water to accumulate between the front of the camera and the lens? IF that was sealed there would be no way for water to get in there.
c) how did this ever get through testing (or even design review)?
This is a major concern - Mine arrives today, and we have high humidity in the summer, and I travel to Orlando a lot - So basically, the camera will become useless in almost every environment, eventually. I would have hoped that a $300 watch wouldn't have issues if you happen to get caught in the rain one day.... Or if you actually walk a lot and use the pedometer on the watch .. Love my Samsung stuff, but they do need better QC on their stuff. My Win8 Ativ Pro is a great machine, but they had MAJOR keyboard disconnect issues on release (3 Units in my house, all had the issues).
A day later - new watch with tape over the hole
A day after getting my replacement Galaxy Gear Watch and putting tape over the hole in the cover below the camera I've experienced no fogging problems. What I don't know is if the tape is the reason I have no problems or if the new watch would not have a problem if there was no tape. And, frankly, at this point I don't want to remove the tape to find out.
. One dried out after 1 day and moisture never returned. I have to exchange it tho because the screen bezel sticks out further than watch face.

I just went to use the camera on mine and noticed it's full of water droplets. It's never been out in the rain or in a wet enviroment just normal everyday use. I'll be taking mine back and just getting a refund.

I just took the case off my Galaxy S2 and peeled back the Invisible Shield after 2 years and it looks pretty good. I spent 30 bucks on this rather horrible case which I will probably replace with a 10 dollar Spigen Hybrid which almost as bad atleast would protect the bottom front.

I have never minded the original invisible shield. But I have to admit I never felt the GS2 screen before and the Nexus 5 feels great. I still can't go 3 years with no protection. Here is how horrible the screen protector looked after pulling it off mind you the color is skewed I forgot to fix in editing:
My 5 day later unboxing photo:
The only thing I have to say about going naked or not is how long do you plan on having the phone and do you work in an environment that will scratch or smash the phone on the first day? Ive had dozens of drops and I use the phone in an environment that would cause me to rub sand like substances across the screen. Until I get a protector I take my gloves off everytime I use the phone and it slows me down.
Actually, I've been rocking all my phones naked until my last phone (S3). I was surprised that the lower right corner of the phone and the bottom part of the camera had scratches till I put a screen protector at the back. Prolly avail of the Spigen glass screen protector and might get a casing to partner it up with.
I used my Samsung Galaxy S3 for a year and a half naked. The screen didn't have a single scratch, but the plastic back plate looked like one giant scratch. I never once dropped the phone though so no physical damage. If I treat my Nexus 5 like I treated the S3 I think I will definitely be fine.

Sadly I can't guarantee myself that I won't drop it. I am as careful with most of my equipment as I can be however things happen. I once kicked a 1,000 dollar camera body off a table lol. I don't consider myself accident prone and I don't drink... but occasionally things happen. Im lucky in that things usually don't break.
My s3 took a couple of knocks around the bezel. I only got cases to hide them and the awful crack by the usb port.
I've just put the black titanium dbrand skin on back and sides and I feel confident that the same knocks wont cause damage

GS2
The Galaxy S2 had the most resilient screen of all the phones I have used till date...I used it without any protectors for 2 years before exchanging it for my N5...barely had a couple of scratches on the screen, the lower glossy part however got badly scratched from a hard tpu case I had used for a few months...used it naked ever since I took off the case..
I am actually a little worried about the the Ringke Slim case that I am currently using on my N5, I fear I will find the bumpers scratched when I finally take this case off...uninstallation is a bit of a hassle with this case..
I think my gs2 was the most resilient phone I've had. Buried it on a pebble beach, skimmed it down tarmac roads, chucked it across rooms, and never put any protection of any sort on it. And I spent the last year of owning it using it on a building site. I wouldn't recommend doing any of these activities for the record. My n5 has been in a gel case since day one though, my friend had an n4 and a 2 inch drop was enough to break the screen, so I'm not taking any risks. Plus the s2 had free insurance, which may have swayed my behaviour.

I am pretty careful with my stuff but I drop each phone at least a couple of times....I have had s few dent but no screen smashes. I would rather go screen protector only but a case gives a bit more piece of mind...although I do sometimes risk it anyway and go bare back [insert your own joke here].

I had the GS2 on Sprint too! That was a great phone. Got it on release and lasted me until just 6 months ago when I changed carriers. Now I'll be going Nexus 5. We have a very similar upgrade path.
My GS2 is no where near as clean though. I used it naked and dropped it plenty of times. Once I spilled a whole mug of coffee right next to it. Had to pry it open and clean up the residue with isopropyl alcohol.
But no matter what that phone kept trucking. It was a great daily driver.
I'm coming from a release day sprint s2 as well lol. That phone was such a monster for its time that I didn't even feel the need to upgrade. I took that phone through hell and it took a beating. I even took it with me through the Sahara. I love that phone and I still have it. I got 2 black ones replaced due to the Phantom keypresses and the power button failure but the white one I fixed the power button myself.

This thread brings back memories. I LOVED my Epic 4G Touch, it is easily one of my all time favorite phones. I wish I still had it.
I'm currently still using the Sprint GS2 currently, and I just had it replaced for a cracked screen. I got CM11 back up and running on it and then I realized it has the phantom capacitive button pressing problem when it's on 3G. It's so frustrating because I'll have to flash it back to stock, triangle-away the bootloader counter, bring it in to Sprint and have them get me another replacement because as per Asurion insurance, Sprint is where I'm supposed to bring it if it has problems not related to physical damage.
I've already bought a wireless charger with intentions of buying a Nexus 5 on a non-contract plan, I just haven't pulled the trigger. To those of you having upgraded from the Epic 4G Touch to the Nexus 5, was that upgrade a monster one?

Yes. While I was plenty happy to stay on my E4GT with the renewed CM efforts I was not happy to stay on sprint. Benchmark wise this thing blows away the E4GT in 3dmark suggesting the gaming performance for one is out of this world in comparison. In general use I don't know.
The screen has excellent viewing angles making me not at all regret switching from an AMOLED phone. Despite an LCD the battery life is phenomenal. I could hardly get 3 hours of screen on with the E4GT. I get 3 hours of screen on and 16 hours total easily with many people getting upwards of 6 hours screen on if you don't mind total run times falling a bit. Its only slightly bigger and with the general idea of DPI scaling the apps don't really show any more than they did on the E4GT sometimes you might not notice any issues having stayed behind on the older device.

After owning the phone for literally 7 days, my girlfriend managed to shatter the screen on her N5. She says it fell off a counter and landed face down. The glass is so bad you can feel it, and when you run your fingers across the screen you actually get little bits of glass powder on your fingers.
Surprisingly, the LCD is perfectly fine.
And here's how bad it is...

There is no phone that can withstand a drop from a counter top and land on its face. This is nothing new.

not this again....
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant. NOT Impact/Shatter resistant. It never has been.
Phones break. It's not the glasses fault.
I know it'll break. But I just have never seen GG shatter like that. It was crazy to me. I'm not complaining, or raising a stink. I just didn't know it was possible. All of the test videos I've seen it seemed to withstand harsher conditions. But oh well.

You must surprise when that car has concrete like tires and the phone doesn't break.
You can throw a Basket Ball on top of a phone and nothing could happen, but the story may vary if you do it with a lighter but much harder Golf ball
Getting run over is a lot of pressure, but also low impact. I'm sure they went real slow over it right? Not like driving by at 40mph+ ?
Different story when it's dropped. It's higher impact. Your phone is actually falling into something and coming to an abrupt stop from however fast it was going.
Driving over it won't do it any justice because think of how wide a tire is. As it passes over the phone, most of the pressure is going to be more or less evenly distributed over the face of the glass. Also, tires are made of rubber. Soft material. Not to mention the suspension will give a little when the tire goes over the phone.
It's two different ballparks man, apples to oranges.
Watch any actual "drop" test. The glass won't survive a drop. As mentioned earlier by others GG3 is scratch resistant. Not shatter proof.
Gotcha.

Best glass screen protector I've found for this phone. Pretty cheap, too. Only bad part is they ship from China. So you will probably forgot you ordered it by the time you get it.
I've personally applied 3 to 3 different N5. My old one, my new one and a friends. Application is pretty easy if you know how to put one on.
Comes with everything you need plus instructions too. I haven't seen one air bubble or had any part of mine lift off the screen ever.
I swear women break their phones like it's no big deal. I stopped buying my girlfriends phones years ago after having to buy 2 different Blackberrys. My current gf has shattered her iPhone 5 twice this year and had to go get it's screen swapped. I baby all my stuff whether it's my car or my phone lol.

Gorrila Glass is crazy strong compared to Soda-lime glass. It can do some amazing things which can be seen in very specific tests on the internet. This gives people a sense that the glass is more or less indestructible. In many cases it will not be.

Exactly what I meant. Plus if the tires are not overfilled (set to the recommended pressure on the tag in the driver door) then the tires have a little give to them as well.
That can't really be used as an accurate test of how your phones glass will hold up. As I said earlier he went really slow at first. Even on the last one he was only doing about 10-20mph. In the beginning he even had a towel under it.
I hate when people make those videos because it doesn't accurately depict how the phone will react under stress. I mean how many people are going to accidentally run over their phones? Even if you do, you probably would have had to DROP it somewhere, first. Go by DROP tests. Those "drive" tests are completely useless.
Yeah, I understand.
