[Q] Do you need an SD card to upgrade - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I have an HTC Vivid that I would like to wipe out and reload with the latest OS (stable custom ROM that would be available).
My first question is, do you need an SD card to do this? I may have an old one lying around but do not currently have on in the phone itself.
Secondly, Is there a thread that has all the updated information for rooting, resetting and placing a custom ROM on the phone? I found a lot of threads but most of the file links aren't working. I'm finding myself searching here and there and piece milling it but don't want to mess things up.
Thanks kindly,
James

Follow up question:
Should I have S-ON or S-OFF?
This seems much more complicated than when I rooted my Galaxy II.
Thanks again

I need some help please

I've been on XDA today for atleast 3 hours and havent gotten anywhere, I have owned my G1 since dec. 08, rooted it, and kept the firmware at 1.1. I have jesus freak recovery 1.41.
Like I said, I've been on XDA forums for 3 hours already and haven't had any clarity what so ever and am just frustrated right now. Without being 100% I managed to upgrade to 1.6 withy cyanogen 4.2.15.1 I lost everything that was on my phone, it hurts but I'm just frustrated to the point right now that the phone is functioning slower than before and theres lag between the screens and functions. With the upgrade, all of the phones original fucntions "contacts, alarm clock, calculator, etc." force closed and nothing worked, i tried to factory reset and because of the stupid sync issue from the begining skrewed me and about half of my info saved to my google account. I'm so frustrated right now.
I need to know how to install the newest recovery to hopefully work with Nand because I had to Manually rename the DRC83_base_defanged to update.zip and then had to manually rename update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed to update.zip to install each one at a time without having the ability to freely choose what zip i wanted to install.
I haven't been able to find what issues there are with using another phones firmware on the G1, i've seen the Hero firmware, the home screen looks gorgeous and runs like a dream, but I haven't been able to find anything saying that it is okay or a BAD idea to attempt to install it, also I havent been able to find any info on finding the newest g1 firmware or any mods to be able to make the g1 firmware look like the hero, or any other android platforms. I have just found constant cooked firmware after firmware with a hard time decyphering why one may be better than the other. If someone could help me, I would GREATLY appreciate it.
I continute to run into threads "how to root" or "down load this, and download this, and assuming you have something with options you dont have, make it work like this"
Please someone help.
First you need to upgrade your recovery b/c the one you have is very very Ancient with a capital A....You have to wipe before you flash the defanged then flash cyan w/o rebooting.
I want to upgrade my recovery, but I haven't found anything that can help me upgrade the thing. any links to tell me how to do it? and is there no order that I have to install the firmware? instead of having to go from 1.1 to 1.5 to 1.6, can i just go from 1.1 to 1.6 in one hit?
step 1: search the development forum for amon ra's recovery. read the instructions to flash it.
step 2: go to cyanogenmod.com and read the instructions for upgrading from scratch.
once you've done those two things, you'll be much happier.

You don't re-root when you need to change roms you just wipe in recovery mode
You need amon_ra
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4647751#post4647751
Like the other guys have said, upgrade to Amon_RA recovery. This allows you to flash updates from any filename, not just update.zip. The link is in my signature, or it's on the G1 Dev Forum in the sticky threads.
After that, boot into recovery and go to the Wipe section. Wipe all the things there, not just data. I never used to wipe everything either and I found that was the source of alot of my problems when changing ROMs. Obviously if you have your SD card partitioned and you choose to wipe your ext then you will lose what is on there.
Cyanogen has good instructions on his Wiki, but basically you want to flash DRC83_base_defanged, DO NOT reboot, and flash CM over the top straight away, then reboot your phone and you'll have a nice clean CM install.
This flashes the HTC Developer image which includes legal Google apps (Gmail, Maps, etc) and then flashes CM over the top which includes all his cool changes but does not delete the Google apps which we aren't supposed to distribute because it's illegal. Perhaps you are not aware, but Cyanogen got a Cease & Desist letter from Google, which is why we now do the defanged base method. More ROMs are moving to this method as time goes on, Pay's ROM and Super D are two which do this.
As an aside, I have found CM is not the fastest ROM. Some people have had better success with a ROM called Super D which is quite popular and includes many of the Eclair bits and pieces which CM does anyway. I personally use Dwang's ROM which is a much more plain Donut image however it absolutely flies. Both of these are linked in my sig, and are usually within the first few pages of the G1 Dev Forum anyway.
Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate how helpful the community has been. I've been having some issues with the the upgrading and maintaining because of my memory card slot dying out. A lot of the times the system will not register that I have my micro sd card in it or it'll say the sd card is blank. I just hope the phone lasts the extra 6 months till the end of my contract

I used to have this problem too, but it went away when I moved to 1.6 (coincidentally the same time I replaced the SD Card that came with my phone with a new Class 6 card). So either the upgrade of the OS or the SD Card fixed it.
In going to have to try the new men card cause the system is already at 1.6 but the phone is still trying to kill itself.

Awesome thanks! A little confusing with so much info all over the place. This sticky will help a bunch of people .
Excellent to have all these in one place, thanks!
I want to say thank you for this! It has helped me a lot.
Beauty!!! Good work!!
Great work, much appreciated. Although, after reading lots and following the forums, I have a few questions:
With the one-click root app listed in the wiki, will I still need to unlock the bootloader to flash a new radio? I'm hearing great things about updating to the new radio but it's also the riskiest thing you can do with the nexus in terms of bricking danger. I'm not a TOTAL newb: I did root and mod my old G1 but the N1 is different in that it cost $350. So the stakes have changed.
I know that it's possible to one-click root and still load CM6, which I plan on doing, but in the CM6 installation instructions, it lists "update radio...if necessary." How do I even know what radio I have or if it needs updating? This all of course without unlocking bootloader, hopefully. I want to keep my warranty; I paid top dollar for this thing!
Put simply, can I update my radio successfully and safely with the "one-click root" method, and if I can't, can I load CM6 without updating the radio.
Thanks so much in advance, and I apologize for being so gun-shy.
By the way, my about phone stats:
Build: FRF91
Kernel 2.6.32.9-27227
Android version 2.2

how to root N1
hello i need some help how to root my N1
Don't worry, it's easy =].
Download One-Click Root and drop the .apk on your SD card, or email it to yourself. If you go the SD card route, you will need to install ASTRO File Manager to navigate to the root application. Install One-Click Root and run it, it takes about a second and will install BusyBox and Superuser IIRC.
Congrats, you have rooted your phone! You can now install apps that need root, such as Titanium Backup, SetCPU, and many others. Try searching the market for 'Nexus One Root' and check out here for a great list of root apps.
Install ROM Manager from the Market if you want to try out other ROMs. Remember to always make backups!
Have fun!
All these assume Windows, what about OS X and Linux?
Take Apart Videos
What will you do when your phone gets crazy? yes, send the phone back to repair center if it is still under warranty. what if it is out of warranty, and it is so expensive to repair it? or there are just some tiny problems and you just want to fix it by your self? yes, you may feel impulsed to take apart your phone by yourself and figure out what the hell the problem is. if you decide to do this, here are some wonderful take apart videos that may bring you some help. S-Off
Hi,
This is a great sticky to have, but I have noticed it's missing out on something, and I couldn't find that despite using search on the forum. How to gain S-Off on Nexus One? Or is S-Off even required to get write access to /system partition the way it is required on some other Android devices including the Nexus One clone HTC Desire?
Rooting for Mac Users
I was also wondering about how to root if you have a Mac. Everything I see is for someone running windows and now that 2.2.1 is out the one click apps do not work. Advice?
Changing Splash Screen
Hi,
I wanted to change the default 'X' splash screen on nexus one. I had read that S-Off is necessary for that but I am not able to find a method that works for nexus one, can someone please help?
Thanks
followed all the steps to root the nexus one and then go to the last step which is to install the .bat file.... the command prompt pulls up and says <waiting for device> it says its unlocked but the apps needing root privileges says the device isnt rooted could someone please help me!?
i am running off the manual 2.3.3 update if that matters.
thanks for the info helped me alot.
This is outdated. I have Android OS 2.3.4 and from what I have read around root is only possible when downgraded. Please post a new video showing how to root N1 with 2.3.4.
Oh and try to keep the music on the low this time?
Does my Nexus One need to be S-OFF?
I am in the process of trying to install a new ROM (Cyanogen).
My N1 is unlocked and rooted. But I cant seem to get far. My research & understanding is that I need S-OFF
Currently it is -- NEXUSONE PVT SHIP S-ON
This article doesnt concur http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700673
(now closed so I can't continue this thread)
I am now using ROM Manager premium but still cant get a new ROM installed.
Help?
The N1 is different from most phones. S-OFF is not needed to make the necessary changes to flash the bootloader, radio, recovery, or the system partition. So continue on with the next steps (which is to probably flash a custom recovery, then boot into that and flash CM and gapps).
If you stick with ROM Manager, flash the custom recovery, and then reboot and make sure it is there... then boot back into Android and use ROM Manager to flash CM (make sure you check the gapps box).

Rooting - I'm sorry

Hi guys, I'm making this thread after fiddling around with the search for a while because I don't know exactly what to search for to get the answers to the questions I need answered. If anyone could link me to a thread containing these answers, I'd be eternally grateful. Please don't be mad, I'm sure the regulars have answered these a thousand times.
I live in Brazil and got my N1 through an american friend.
1- Can I root a N1 running Froyo (FRF91)?
2- If I root my phone, will I have access to paid apps? Do I pay for them with my google account somehow?
3- Will rooting my N1 screw up my ability to call folks?
4- Is there any reason to root a froyo N1? (I've been told Cyanogen's mod of 2.1 was a billion times better than the default one, but I don't think there's a 2.2 build)
Again, Sorry if these were answered somewhere else. In that case, please link me and I'll be quiet
Edit - Ugh, there's a Q&A subforum. Way to go, me.
1. Yes, I'm sure you can, but maybe not yet with the method that doesn't unlock the bootloader.
2. Yes, with MarketEnabler. You pay with a Google Checkout account.
3. No.
4. When CyanogenMod 6 comes out, for sure. Right now I have CM5.08 (2.1) and Froyo FRF83 on my N1 and I prefer Froyo to be honest. But CM6 will have 720P recording and other cool stuff.

well imo cutting that small tab on the battery is very easy to do and in no way affects vital battery operation. its just a separate piece of plastic.
however, some members have managed to force their sdcard in without cutting the tab, but that may cause more damage than cutting the battery if something goes wrong.
you can also either get a spare battery that doesnt have the tab or a class 6 transcend 4gb microsd.
there arent to many viable options im afraid, but the piece you cut off the battery is not really even a part of the battery. i think its just there to ensure the sd remains secure during operation
Okay thanks for the elaborating answer. I have been considering root for a long time, but the thing that will make me root right away was if FM was working, and perhaps 720p, but with the new Froyo I haven't seen arguments that should make me use costum rom yet, but if there's someone that can tell me otherwise, I would like to know
I hv been thinking about rooting for long time as well.
Currently I m on FRF91 stock, I hv read the posts in dev section and it seems the only way now is to downgrade first then upgrade afterwards. And there are so many different combination of kernels, tools, etc. which bloated my head. And in different tutorials I read ppl facing different issues. Cutting the plastic part of the battery is another obstacle (for my mind) to overcome. In some tutorials, however, I don't see this particular step as necessary, e.g.:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710351
So for now, I will keep reading and probably wait for a new tutorial for rooting stock frf91 without touching the bootlocker, and without issues...

Well you can avoid cutting the battery if you can see your phone through ADB while in recovery. That is the most difficult part of the whole process. The rest of it is easy and takes less than 2 minutes.
If your phone shows up in adb while in recovery, your pretty much good to go. As for rooting, you really dont need to mess with any kernels or roms. You can stay stock and rooted. Thats what ive done (though i plan on moving to other roms soon enough)
The workarounds and problems for the root method without unlocking bootloader all stem from seeing your phone in recovery and the SD is what plays the major role. All other problems are because of circumstances of people not following directions or flukes.
So according to the sticky: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
The very 1st step is:
- Extract the files within "ROOT_FRF83.zip" into the "tools" directory of the extracted SDK package
While I m already on FRF91, this sounds like I m going to push something older to my phone. Am I correct?
(I stay in this thread for a reason, I m a noob in rooting )
Thanks!
well, i updated a stock european rom (EPF30)
unlocked the bootloader and was rooted. Glad
after downgrading to firmware ERD79 still rootacces
then i received by OTA build FRF91
installed without problems.
butt, no rootacces now.
searched for a working superboot for FRF91. No succes at the moment
For me it is not clear how to get full acces. ?

I cut my battery to root my phone, and the amount you have to remove is really negligible. I don't think it even makes a difference to the security of fit of the SD card. I can get the card in, but I can't get it out with the battery in

As the requirements for that guide state, you must have an N1 at FRF85B or lower. It doesn't work on FRF91.

[Q] Multiple questions on the same subjects, Please forgive the noobness guys.

Is there a thread that shows the users marginal picks of the best combo's of mods, roms, hardware, and apps? I tried to search for it but didn't seem to find it.
(Please keep in mind most of the stuff I have found is dated from 2009 and CM6 was released yesterday)
Basically, I am interested in rooting my G1 and updating it to CM6.??? But the radio (danger/death.spk) scare has a hold of me. I want to make sure that I can go back to factory without problems. (In case I sell the phone)
What about running apps from SD? Is it effective on a 8GB class 2 card? And if so what are the advantages of it? (Speed increase, load times, ect.) Can this be done without flashing/rooting?
Is there a way to transfer files over bluetooth or Wi-Fi without having to root?
There are quite a few things other than this but, these are the most important that I can think of. And since I have never messed with rooting or ROMS I have no idea if it is even possible to install apps after flashing with a new ROM.
Once again, forgive me in my wonderment of noobness! I am another droid that has seen the fading light of win-mo and has crossed over!
Thank you to all in advance for their help!

Don't believe there is a thread of that nature.
You don't need the danger spl anymore. Do a search for firerat's mtd patch and that will work for you. As long as you read and do follow the instructions there is no fear involved even with danger spl. Just dont make a mistake. You can always go back with the dreaming.nbh file. Always a way to unroot. You will want to get amonra 1.7.0 for recovery. And for your sake nandroid.
If you're not running out of internal memory i dont believe there is a real advantage to using a2sd but the new roms have a new method implemented. I dont think you can use a2sd with stock.
Do a search for blue tooth file transfer in the market. Don't believe you need root access to use it.
You can always install apps after rooting and flashing a custom rom. You will still have market and everything. Just makes your phone better/faster. Just keep reading and you will find a huge amount of info here in these threads.
Good luck.
Firerats mtd hack can fake your spl for you. So you don't have to worry about flashing danger spl and bricking. Its just what all of us old guys run. Because when we first started. There wasn't any other way for us. So read up on rooting and firerats hack and you should be good. No need for 1.33.2005 death anymore.

[Q] Downgrade SPL from 5.12

Hello All,
I've read a lot of forums as to installing custom roms and I'm still lost. I haven't tried anything yet cause I'm too chicken to experiment and possibly kill my phone. Long story short, I still would like to install a custom rom to mainly get free wifi tethering.
I noticed in most of the forums that the only way to even begin the process is to downgrade to SPL 4.xxx. I don't have a restore point in Zuncee cause my pc crashed a month ago. Is the only way for me to downgrade from 5.xxx to 4.xxx, is by the goldcard method or is there a work around? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,
I was in the same situation you are now! Last week on Tuesday I brought a HD7 from ebay and thought it would be as easy to install custom rom as my HD2.....after reading the forums here it was anything else! But still by Wednesday I had custom ROM on my phone (im using deepshining). The only method I tried and what worked was the Goldcard method. I made my own Y cable and followed the instructions on the Goldcard thread. I found this video on youtube quite useful as well!
Any questions just ask me ill try to help as much as I can. I did find it tough to work out at first but when you have a custom ROM installed its like a new phone!

There's nothing you can do, except gold card, it's safe and easy, no need to be afraid
Hi dcscorpio76,
I am currently also in the same boat as you.
I have SPL 5.12... and also want to downgrade.
I have no backup to revert to as i recently wiped my PC and never kept my old WP backups.
After lots of reading (and im still not 100% on the process so will likely read some more) I intend to downgrade my SPL and then flash an 'unlocked' version of UK trophy rom. From what i have read i think im going to have to use the 'gold card' method so i will be buying a few bits (cables, usb gender changer etc.) When i have all the things (i believe) i need i will write back here on what i do and where it gets me.
I have a £10 nokia that i still love and i wouldn't be all that bothered if i had to use it. Why not wait until i have flashed mine (over the next couple of days i think) so that you dont risk bricking your device that you may still rely on?
I dont totally dislike my WP, its just that i want to breathe a new lease of life into it. I would like to customise the UI and play with some homebrew apps.
One thing i dont really intent to explore is running apps that should be paid for in the marketplace as im a believer in paying a good price for good apps. So i wont be answering any questions on that.
If you have already gone ahead and tinkered i'd be interested in any info you may have.
Thanks

Here's my HTC info:
Name: HTC HD7
Model: HTC HD7
Carrier: T-Mobile
Software: Windows ® Phone 7.5
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Radio SW: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Radio HW: A.12.0.D4
Bootloader: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
I was reading this Thread but apparently I need to use a Y USB cable, in order to flash a Goldcard ROM since I first need to DOWNGRADE my Bootloader version. I am a bit more than lost when it comes to figuring out where to start. Just BTW: It is a stock build, the phone got the OTA update.
Ultimately I need to have a Custom ROM that supports Multiple Languages, as well as no carrier branding
Any suggestions, in plain english?

I am waiting for my HD7 replacement so might be in the same situation. Would it not be possible to enter bootloader and them flash pre nodo original rom?
Goldcard by viperbjk is the easiest and the safest method so far to downgrade our bootloaders....i was on 5.11 and I did the goldcard method and it went on smooth like butter!! I'm currently on bootloader 3.1(HSPL) and flashed the deepshinig v7.6 and I'm loving my phone right now
Just follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152
Good luck! And happy flashing!!
