Tethering functional via FoxFi/PdaNet (Bluetooth) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I have been monkeying with this for a while, and yall have probably seen my frustrated posts regarding the loss of tethering functionality with my new GS5. I had been using a rooted GS2 for a couple years (with my unlimited MEW1 plan) and could tether with no problem. Switching to the carrier-branded GS5 (even though ATT allowed my data plan to carry over) has been a learning experience.
Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know that this morning I was finally able to get tethering working via FoxFi on my GS5 and PdaNet Tablet on my old GS2. I left the devices unpaired in Bluetooth settings, then started the bluetooth tether on FoxFi, then went through the PdaNet Tablet configuration. It found my GS5 and paired, then connected. I verified by visiting a website and testing some apps.
The whole point of this exercise was to get Ingress working so my son can play with me. He has my GS2 now. Not having tethering thus far has been the only missing piece of the puzzle, but this is a good workaround until root is achieved.
I assume this would also work on an Android tablet, but I haven't tried that yet because my old Transformer's charger has failed. I will also experiment with a laptop & bluetooth dongle, and also my iPad.
Good luck!

Tethering works no problem for me on the new AT&T plan. No separate is app needed. I made sure to clarify that before switching plans and devices. Thought it was also available on older plans with unlimited data.

This is the old grandfathered MEW1 data plan; ATT specifically said that the tethering option is not provisioned on this plan (which is why the provisioning service fails to validate when you start up the wifi hotspot feature).

Tethering works perfectly for me on the new AT&T.

That's great; my point is that those of us on the grandfathered unlimited plans cannot use the standard tether service.

How did the rest of your experimentation go?

So I can't set up a hotspot with foxfi. I wonder if is cut I'm on straight talk.

Works for me on my tablet(which is what I really wanted hotspot for). I have grandfathered unlimited plan.

How about clockworkmod tether. No root is needed for it.

Another benefit is that Bluetooth tethering may not be quite as fast, but uses less battery

Foxfi only work for me with USB tether. Hopefully there will be a walk around this soon.

i installed foxfi unroot full version but it connects then disconnect automatically telling me no internet or sim invalid ?
i am coming form S$ and never had a problem is there a work around

ATTN: MEdia net users and teatherers

As most of you know I have discussed using media net instead of pda personal, and even taught numerous people how to get away with it even tethering with media net.
Well im sorry I am the one to tell you all. There are some new facts AT&T fails to tell everybody as of 10-26-08.
1. AT&T has intergrated a provisioning for media net users. Here are the details
* EVERYONE that has the media net feature on there account will be watched
what this means for kaiser/tilt users?
If you are using 15$ media net instead of the required 30$ pda personal WATCH OUT!!! once you use (and it does not matter the phone) 2.5gb a month a flag goes up. A specific department will now watch data transfers for 3 months after the flag goes up. If you use more than 5gb in a month, Well you are pretty much FUC*ED. If this happens 1 of 2 things can happen
1. MASSIVE amounts of overage charges.
2. Your contract can be canceled and you will be liable for any early termination fee. This is because as you have certain rights with ATT they also have certain rights.
Oh yea, one more thing. For those of you actually thinking about going legit and adding the 60.00 pda personal with tethering feature... BEWARE it is no longer unlimited, it has a max use of 5gb a month and .49 cents per mb over.
So I hope i have helped or at least made you AWARE, so watch your data use if the above applies to you.

Thanks for the info. Luckily for me I have no way to reach that bandwidth on the west side of Michigan, no 3G. at&t trying to charge for slow internet... not fair
Good looking out!
I've been flying right and paying the $30 plan, but it's good for others to know as AT&T charges can get out of hand quickly.

I had tried to do the $15 media net, but even though it said I had successfully added it, it was still charging me pay-per-use. I didn't have an IMEI of a regular phone, so when I called to get the $300+ charges removed I had to sign up for the $30 plan
Thank you for the heads up on this.
I've been using the PDA Personal Unlimited w/ 1000 SMS since I got my Tilt. Since I only use tethering for recreational surfing, I think the most data I've ever used, according to my bill, is like 1.5GB/mo.
Good, this really pissed me off when they finally decided to do this. The 30.00 makes sense if your always in a 3g area, but you are always using edge its utter and complete bullsh*t.

Do you really think AT&T would publicly release documentation to the effect that they are going to bust customers that are knowingly using the incorrect features. Do you think im going to risk my huge salary and even bigger private office by releasing AT&T internal documentation.
If you dont believe me, go ahead and tether 10gb with media net and see what happens. Besides you know what feature your supposed to have, what i have taught everyone to do isint exactly legit (but you all knew that anyway) So its not like AT&T is doing anything illegal by checking usage on their network.

Why ask him to provide something you can read regarding this. Why not just log into your account and read it for yourself. But I can confirm that AT&T has changed something, because I have several AT&T phones (ie Sony Ericcson 580i, and BB Pearl). I once was able to simply change phones by switching sims and not notice anything on the My Account (using manage my account) No however as soon as I switch the sim into a new phone it sees immediately and changes the phone I'm using to the match where the sim card is. It didn't do that before. That's how I know they are reading (provisioning) the phones network usage to match the device it's in.

Same here. About two months back I sent my Tilt out for a repairs and I had borrowed a spare phone (LG) from my coworker. Within that time of using her phone, I had logged into my account and noticed that they had updated my device to the temporary phone automatically. And vise versa when I got my Tilt back.
Another reason I decided to keep flying straight.
what happens to those users who legitimately use medianet on the PPC device only (no tethering) and go over the bandwidth flag? I mean, if you think about it, video streaming in a 3G area could definitely hit that mark, especially if you download all install cabs on your phone rather then onto your computer. add to that IM's, remote desktop, google nav, and you can see where bandwidth could go up. and these are all legitimate uses. I'll be pissed if I get hit with something like that for using my phone the right way.

Ok so what's this mean, folks? I know how it works, but what I mean by my question is... if I'm on the $30/mo data plan can I use this or will they up me to the $60 or whatever it is? I was told if I tethered my phone (by usb cable) they'd know and contact me, giving me the good news I would be increased to the tethering plan. What about with this program?

No, they have no way of knowing what your doing as to tethering. The only thing they may be suspect of is if you are going over 5GB a month or getting very close to it often. Also if they see extremely high data transfers in a few hours they might suspect you are tethering, but they still have no way of knowing and they can't change your plan without your consent/request first. Just keep an eye on your data transfers with something like spb data monitor and be careful with big downloads.

Ok, I was just curious. See, I've heard both ways. I've heard people say they tethered and got a friendly call from cingular/at&t saying "hey guess what...naughty naughty, you used your phone wrong buddy" [ok, probably not those exact words!] and told them they had to change their plan. Just worried about that I guess, as anyone can understand.
Has anybody got this working with a PSP? It doesn't seem to find the signal, while my old S620 can.
This wifi program is awesome much quicker opening time and much less setup then WMWifirouter. To bad this program didn't come out months ago before I spent the $30 and bought WMWifirouter LOL
Installation worked fine with my phone (htc jade) and I also have a shortcut to start the programme, but there are no buttons (info, start) at the bottom of the display and thought there is e little arrow that points to the bottom (I think it's an arrow) I'm not able to click on it and furthermore I'm not able to scroll down with finger / stylus.
So very frustrating: I can start the program, setup the name and passwort of the connection but neigher start something nor use any other functionality of it!?
Anyone has the same problem / ideas to solve it?
Bests Tobi
I question the person that said they cant tell if your tethering.
I would suggest they can tell pretty quickly.
And yes they will slap you with a tethering charge if it goes over certain amount.
At&t is getting old with the insane charges. Time to trade up for a cdma2000 version of the fuze i think. I personally will not re-up (buy a new device that is) with at&t until they join the rest of the world w/ data pricing.

How do you figure? All AT&T knows is that you are using an app on your phone that is transferring a lot of data. Maybe you're just browsing the web on your phone, maybe you're using skype, etc. They can't tell what app is using the data, so they can't tell if it's a tethering app or the opera that ships with the phone.

[Q] Suggestions on a new phone for tethering the NC?

Been on Verizon for several years without problems. Have used several types of phones up to now (Motorola Krave ZN4). As the NC most likely will not enjoy the benefits of 3G (or 4G) the logical solution is phone upgrade to allow a good consistent tether when WiFi is unavailable.
So, any suggestions based on experience on type/brand/model phone compatible with Verizon service? What to look for? Tethering protocols?
thanks
Any phone with Android+root+Wifi+adhoc support should work. just choose if u need 3g or 4g.
basically what he just said. I have a Droid 1 and (with a "fix") am able to tether no problem with it, and that's the first android 2.0 device. I know Droid X works fine, and any other android really should work fine as long as its, as he said, rootable (basically) 4G will cost you more monthly (I think 10 more) but is faster, 3g is good enough IMO.
Any will do, I use an evo but they all get the job done
how about iphone4?
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
iphone4 would work, but it would also need to be rooted/jailbroken, and the iphone community is different from android, everything costs money (including tethering apps) and it's not as free for all happy sharing open...
Tethering from the iPhone4 can be done without needing to pay anything, and that is through bluetooth. But..:
Iphone may already work through PAN/Bluetooth, with a few commands (automated through gscript?). But current kernels do not allow DUN connections.
Thus, tethering from an iphone4 using bluetooth/PAN only allows browser app and a few other apps (gmail?) to connect to the internet.. For a complete connection, you would need DUN. I think it has already been requested. But of course, this isn't a priority for kernel devs at the moment.
Of course, as it's been said, you can always choose to jailbreak and pay for a wifi/hotspot app. That would work.
Sam
I ordered my NC today! I'm waiting for it... what I need to tether my nexus one to NC? N1 is rooted as well... is it necessary to get adhoc fix on NC? I heard some user here saying it is not necessary but I found a thread related to adhoc fix...
Thanks!

One of the very few people I know on Sprint said he hardly ever gets over 1 mbps on 3G. He did say their 4G was ok, about the same speed as my AT&T 3.5G, when he can connect to it. But it never works indoors.
Granted that is only 1 person but it must be bad because he is probably going to switch to AT&T.

I agree that sprint has horrible 3g speeds, but I would rather connect to the internet at 1 mbps than not connect at all. Just got back from the mall, and tried to get internet there many times today but couldn't because the networks must fail easiley with many people on them. I have ran into these situations 6 or 7 times over the past 2 days and it is starting to get really annoying. Sprints 4g is about 1 or 2 mbps faster than att's hspa+, and the only times I have troubble getting it inside is if it is a multiple story building your in and you are on the bottom story. And you cant beat unlimited data messages and roamiing. Oh well enoygh complaining about att, guess ill tough it out for the last 1 1/2 years of my contract

I just don't get how people can use that much data "without tethering". I tried my best one month to watch YouTube and listen to Pandora for as long as possible, I only used a little over 1G.
I might be strange for some people but I prefer to watch Netflix on my 50" LCD with DTS surround sound instead of 4.5" screen with stereo headphone.

I am never at home, and I watch a lot of hockey games live on the phone, as well as on the phone constantly watching youtube and other sites, pretty much live on the phone, and I am hoping they start to offer some 10gig plans soon instead of the 6 gig plans that they max out at here.
I never tether, and rarely download, just the odd song or two here and there and apps, but media consumption like streaming video is a huge part of my phone experience and I need a data plan to allow for this important use for me.
So AT&T announces that throttling would start October 1. Vivid wasn't released until after that date. Before signing a new contract, people already knew they could be throttled. It's been stated many times before, you still get unlimited. Nothing in the contract states at what speed you are to get your unlimited data.
I work at a place that has wifi. I have wifi at home. My phone connects to many of the free wifi places around where I live. I still manage to stay below 2GBs. I am still under the unlimited plan and have not been throttled. I stream Pandora, watch YouTube, and stream Netflix.
This Vivid forum is starting to fill up with complaints and nothing relevant to the phone itself. I would return this phone not because I can't unlock the bootloader, but just so I don't have to keep seeing so many threads with people ranting.
Dude, I use Netflix and Mt dish vip922 sling and i average 6gb a month

Oh well, I use Skype video calling outdoors, YouTube, internet radio in my car, exactly the same things I used on my old HSPA Atrix, but now I got the message at 1.8GB, while before never got anything and I topped 4GB. How am I a data hog?

Would you Switch to Tizen?

If the Tizen update were to come out today for the Gear 1, would you stay or switch the Tizen.
Keep in mind the Trade-offs
Android:
Pros:
Android Ecosystem (100s thousand apps)
Custom ROM
Highly Moddable
Cons:
3 day instead of 4 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
(currently) no Gear Specific Android SDK
few Gear Specific apps
Tizen
Pros:
4 day instead of 3 day battery life (source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/22/samsung-gear-2/ )
SDK Available
Possibility of more future Tizen specific apps
sports functions like hiking, cycling, etc
future upgrade path
Cons:
Few Developers with experience in Tizen
Questionable interest in Tizen ecosystem -- with announcement of Google Wear
No mods
No roms
No Android app access
I would switch, as most of the Android apps are not meant for Gear 1, so this Pro is not really valid. I believe many more Gear 2 apps will come in Tizen, and the underlying OS does not matter to me.
That pro depends on your needs.
With android you can do:
Internet tethering
File manager
Google maps
Google now
Tasker
Audio recorder
Full Facebook
Google Voice dictation
Really depends on your expectations.
The more you expect to do, the more of a plus it is.
But if you just want a stock experience then it's less of a plus.
But I really wonder if Tizen will take off with the developers knowing a universal platform, the Google Wear is right around the corner.

Only partially. I could not get the Google apps to go online, only the Google Search. Other apps requiring direct net connection did not work for me either. I have been back on Stock for some time now due to this limitation from AT&T.
Here, you need to install the Xposed Hack Connectivity service APK needed to spoof the network connectivity. This makes apps think there is a standard wifi network connection even when there is not.
Lots of people forget or miss this step and have the exact same problem you have.
Probably just get the file off here, no need to read the page contents, just download.

I have US AT&T and all the Google services work fine. Either get a phone that supports native BT PAN or download Open Garden and enable network spoofer in Null.

I won't switch. There will be little to none customization, and I don't think I'll be impressed with apps. At this point I think I'd go with Neptun Pine..

7 hours of browsing on a 800mAh battery?
I think as Gear users, we all know the accuracy of that statement.

Time will tell, but still, I don't want Tizen.
in some cases not even the xposed hack will work as i found out when using easy tether - it turns out google services need https connectivity so the free version of easy tether + xposed did not solve the problem. By upgrading to the pro version of easy tether i was able to start using these services. By the way love how google translate works - very convenient in a watch
using ATT Galaxy S4 stock

I would, switch in a heart beat, I want proper smart watch app not side loaded phone apps.
Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk
What is a proper smart watch app?
App with big buttons?
App that requires the phone as a "provider" of data?
App that the manufacturer deems as "official"?
I think I would switch to tizen only if the battery life is really really better than with the current rom...
If it was 1 week that would be awesome. Lol
Well it kind of would be longer since you won't be using it as much due to lack of tizen apps, so you'd have a long stand by time. But actual usage time would be the only slightly longer.

Sounds like a lot of people are wanting to switch back to Android.
I think switching to Tizen now is too much of a risk to take especially with Android Wear right around the corner. Why lose the ability to control your device and be at the mercy of Samsung by switching to Tizen and be stuck with it forever?
The only thing I like about tizen was the standalone music player. Is there a way to do that with null rom?
