Hi all!
Does anyone else think that the Xperia Z1's LED notification light is dim?
Well, does anyone also have dirt in there obtruding even more so it's even dimmer than it should be?
Right now it looks like my LED light at the top is split in two halves, as there's a relatively large piece of dirt stuck in the middle. Still water doesn't get rid of it, and I'm not going to try pressurized water either :silly:
Has anyone else experienced and fixed this minor annoyance? I'm not going to try to poke it out with a needle either, I might just break the waterproof membrane for the earpiece.
As a side note/question, does anyone have a schematic of how the LED notification light and earpiece are positioned in the device? I've been wondering ever since I got the Z1, since it looks like the LED light is reflected by the plastic out of the device. Just out of curiosity of course :cyclops:
EDIT
The following has been suggested to use:
- A soft toothbrush (be careful not to ruin the waterproof membrane)
- A tiny piece of cloth
- Paper (if the dust or dirt isn't too far in)
- Can of air, in case the dirt isn't too stuck
- ...
Have you try with soft brush + water?

I prefer not to use any kind of brush, I'm afraid it might ruin the waterproof membrane.
Although it's probably just fine to use one carefully, I really don't want to risk my most expensive device I've got.

I have sensitive teeth so I use soft teeth brushes. The old ones I use for cleaning small things, like my Z1's earpiece.
BTW You are right. The LED is located just above the Sony logo and the case reflects the light and that is a good reason of why I have chosen a White phone over the black one. The white Z1 (And Z2 too) have a brighter light.
I will use an Air Gun with 10 bars pressure and shot directly on the led!! (just kidding) ..lol..
Compressed air, toothbrush, water, cloth.

I use the corner of a piece of paper. That works great.

Just today I tried using a single toothbrush hair, though it didn't feel good to me.
I think there was a lump of dust stuck deep inside the LED area, and I had a hard time getting rid of it. I just hope I didn't somehow break the waterproof membrane :silly:
Oh and paper wouldn't have worked in my case, as it was too deep in (that's what she said?) and paper would've been too large too. There's still a lot of dust in the area but I'll just keep it this way. Or perhaps I'll try to dump water in the area to see if that helps (really hope the membrane is OK). I haven't found any good way of cleaning the LED area though, so any other ideas are welcome!
Can of air is doing the trick for me!
the led has to reflect off the black plastic. I glued a tiny bit of tinfoil onto the reflecting surface and now its twice as bright

I've had my lovely Xperia T for almost 2 weeks now and I've got a few concerns about the build quality and I'd like to see if I'm the only one with these issues:
1) I've noticed a few places on the back panel which exhibit a certain amount of creaking when I apply slight pressure. The worst areas are at the top left of the device behind the notification LED and between the SIM/Micro SD panel and the power button. This sound is quite irritating to me, especially for a brand new device.
2) There are a few areas along the edge of the matte black panel where the matte paint have been scratched off. Two of the corners have slight paint wear and around the headphone jack. Under the matte paint is a shiny black surface and it seems (so far) to be affecting the sharper edges or where the matte panel meets the metallic bezel. I'll try to take photos, but it's very small at the moment and might not be picked up due to it's dark colour.
Like I said, I've only had this phone less than a fortnight and it's already showing signs of wear even though I'm very careful with my devices.
Do any of you have any experiences like this?

Yep about to ask the same thing here... I cant believe that after 2 weeks of normal usage back matte covering is starting to peel at the corners. Its some kind of spray over a glossy plastic. Had galaxy ace for over a year and that stayed like new. Was very upset with this, so I ordered thin hard plastic case to cover that s***.
I got the phone from O2 ireland. James Bond and what not...but very disappointed as for the price.
Mine is exactly as you described it. Paint started to peel off at the top corners and the creak when pressed on the left corner. Really disappointed with Sony's built quality. Also the factory installed screen protector is showing some marks/light scratches. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove it as I would like to replace it with aftermarket ones. It seems to be glued to the screen.

I've been reading into this 'shatter proof' layer and I'd be curious to find out if anyone here has removed theirs already? How does it affect dust/smudges etc? I'm naturally a bit hesitant to attack my phone just yet.
A note on the creaking case; I've found a rather unprofessional way to resolve it and it's reduced the noise significantly. It's possible to wedge a thin piece of paper between the back panel and the bezel, so I trimmed a piece small enough to go ask the way inside as far as it can go and gently pushed it out of sight using a craft knife. I used a post-it note and made a strip about 1mm wide and 5mm long and this seemed to do the job.

Not so sure its a "Shatter proof" layer or just to keep any broken glass stuck together so you dont cut yourself. It may give some protection against shattering but as I have said before, I removed it from my x10 and my neo with no adverse effects at all. Still to do it yet on my T. The reason eing, soon that layer gets scratched and dull, then I will take it off and have a brand new screen, similar pricicple to the rip offs the F1 drivers use on their visors.
Mine creaks as does my wife's Xperia T. Really annoying at first, but I got a hard case from Amazon UK and its stopped most of it.
Just removed my built-in/factory-fitted screen protector or whatever you want to call it
Gave it a good clean as it was very slightly tacky and now it looks much slicker with the screen off... it seems to attract less dust and it isn't as smear-prone as before. I prefer the naked glass feel and it seems ever so slightly more responsive. Kinda glad I took the plunge after being too chicken to do it lol
Good for you!! Did mine also today using a credit card. Started at the top where the speaker is as it had the least resistance. Came off quite easily.

same problem
had my xperia T for about 2 months now, i have been very careful with it, it hasnt been droped, or against anything sharp, the only thing it has had is the pulling in and out of my pocket every time i use it, as any phone should be designed to do, and the paint on all 4 corners is wearing off, mainly on the left side, i belive this to be the angle that it usually is in my jeans pocket causing it to scratch.
as a matter of intrest whats the cover on warenty for something like this? because the manufacture could say its not their fault,

Hi guys. For xperia Z there is this piece of paper that is on the charging port, earphone jack and sd card slot.
However, all 3 pieces of mine is kinda like really pale pinkish. I swear it was never near water at all. Anyone experienced this or maybe any1 can clarify it may be due to a really humid environment?

Humid environment would likely affect it.
It bugs the hell out of me though that they play them right inside ports that you're expected to use every day, especially when you live in rainy Britain, I can't use wired headphones cause if I took it out of my pocket just once I'd likely obliterate the the litmus in the headphone jack area to a nice hot-pink colour.

Well, the papers are affected by water, they're called litmus paper, usually it happens through direct contact that they turn pink/red but if you are in a particularly humid location such as the shower, a sauna, or some country that's wet and warm (equadorian rain forest?) the water in the air can turn it pink, if you leave the cover open.
Rain can do the same if some drops hit it while cover is open.

I just used a toothpick with extreme care, because there is no soft grill, worked good.
You should try one of those baby noise cleaners, great suction and they're cheap.
I've had good luck with a dry toothbrush and light, quick strokes.
you run the risk of forcing it deeper into the holes.
i'd only use a fine bristle art brush for the edges.
suction bulb for holes.
or just put your mouth on it and suck dry and fast.
ive been using those hand held blow thingys used for cleaning debris out of dslr's
The best way is with a toothbrush damped
In alcohol.
Soak the toothbrush in alcohol and dry it about 90% with towel(semi wet, not too dry, not too wet) Brush the grills, The remaining alcohol will clean the gunk on the speaker grills.

I've had mine at least 5 days before most people on here, and I haven't seen anything stuck in the grills of my phone. Does anyone have any pictures they can show? I'd be interested to see how big of a problem this is.
Some tips from reading this post and having this issue
I have a three week old HTC One and untill my recent trip abroad i had not noticed anything slipping into the grills of the phone on my return from spainI put it in my bag along with a bottle of Liquer and a My babys left over fomula powder... Then i dropped the BAG!
Needless to say the combination of the powder and some of the Liquer made for a horrible thick mess which covered my Phone including filling the speaker grills.
I used a toothbrush and this actually did a brilliant Job, its not 100% but i know if I do it a few more times over the next few days it will clear it.
The trick is as stated above careful strokes in one direction across the grill to drag the dirt out using a brush with fine bristles.
Do not put a Magnet anywhere near the speakers on your phone this can cause internal damage which may void your warrenty. Also the suggestion for using some form of blue tac to do this could also go very very wrong, If the tack is too warm it will stick itself into the grill and that will be indredibly difficult to get out if not impossible dependent on how hard you press down trying to remove the dirt, this can also just force the dirt futhur into your device.
The alchol based methord is also very good but be careful too much moisture and you could damage your speaker if it seeps in so its best to dry a dry toothbrush at first and only resort to some cleaning based alchols if you have dirt which simply cannot be lifted. (I will say formula when turned to a paste is incredibnly hard to remove but as with most things does dry after a few hours.)
I used a simple baby wipe on the phone afterwards to remove excess dirt from the grill once the toothbrush had done the job.

As titled. I feel kind of cheated, as the water detection strip while underneath the flap but is not placed in a "fair" position, at least I don't think...
Long story short, the water detection strip next to the headphone jack is now red because I had the flap opened with the headphone plugged in and a bit of rain dropped onto the strip. It is a design flaw, at least in my eyes, as it is too exposed - should really have the strip INSIDE the headphone jack like the iPhone for fair water detection. Anyway, I'm not top pleased, and wondering if a bleach can help? Or any other methods?
Thanks in advance!!

Really at the end of the day, as horrible as it might sound your warranty many be compromised already with the strip being any colour apart from white.
There is also the possibility that Sony have something similar inside the phone to detect water entering the internals

I would contact them and ask, they may be more understanding than you think and ask you to send it in and have it checked and strip replaced if it is ok. Try and phone, they tend to be less scripted etc (this is UK at least, don't know for other countries Xperia helplines).
take it to a small licenced warranty repair shop if there is any around your area.
My old school Sony Ericsson walkman was fixed when water damaged because they get more money from it being a warranty repair then just being paid for labour and parts..
You got it wet, it's fact.
But this does not mean they won't do a warranty repair.

Thanks for all the replies. Well, I tried, and the bleach turned it back to white
However, I wasn't being careful enough, as when I tried dipping a soaked cotton bud onto the strip, some of the solution went astray and may have came into contact with the copper-part of the earphone jack. Even after it had been dried out, the earphone jack couldn't detect my earphones anymore and playing music with my headphones in resulted in music playing through the phone's speakers instead.
Anyway, long story short, I thought I might as well bring the phone to the repair center and give it a go and see what they'll say. 4 hours later, they gave the phone back to me, with the earphone jack now working (all they did was update software to 253...), and said nothing about the phone being in contact with water. So....... kind of a success, I guess? What's bothering me now is still that I don't know why the earphone jack stopped working... It should be hardware-related, yet a software updated fixed it... hmmm....
They probably just replaced. the Jack and upgraded the software. to be sure

The longer I'm having this phone, the more disillusioned I am becoming with it.
I sold my iPhone 5 in September and 'upgraded' to the Z1...
Yet despite needing initial time to get over the pathetic viewing angles, I developed a real fondness for the phone...
But that honeymoon period soon ended... Two weeks later the phone had proven that it was the biggest scratch magnet I ever owned. The perfectly hard wearing Dragontrail glass is covered by a super scratch prone ASF, the aluminium frame has lots of ugly scuff marks on it despite taking great care of the phone and only keeping it in a soft pocket - alone - and today the grille bubbled up and came off the speaker at the bottom.
By the way it is nothing but a piece of cut out mesh, fabric essentially, that has been glued down with what seems to have become really tacky glue. Clearly not water resistant as it's advertised.
I've put it back but it wouldn't stick. I really need to send it in for a warranty repair but I'm leaving Europe for 5 months on Monday so I can't!
So the Z1 is a poorly constructed phone made to appear as if it is of a premium build quality and Sony did not build it to look good in a month, or two or 12 down the line let alone two years.
Who in their right mind ok'd the ASF what a hideous idea?!
Anyway I digress, has anybody else's speaker grille come off or bubbled up?

I can't superglue it back as it now has a kink in it... And just looks bad.
A warranty repair it is then when I come back. Thanks for the advice anyhow.
As long as my waterproofing is not affected I'm gonna live with it.
But yes I am fundamentally disappointed with some of the materials used to make this phone... and at the top of my list is the ASF with the logo baked in...
This is just yet another thing...

I've noticed today, that my speaker grill is a bit "wobbly" which means that if I put my finger on it I can move it a bit to the left and right and also up and down. I'm not sure if it was there from the beginning (I have the phone since September) but I doubt it. Is this "normal" or already considered a case for warranty?
I'm afraid now the grill might come off soon! I have a case on the phone and always have it alone in one pocket and handle it with care so that shouldn't be the cause.
What did you do? Sent it in under warranty?!

That's basically how the problem started for me.
After a while of trying to keep it on, I got annoyed with the fact that it kept falling off, so just left it off.
Haven't sent it back for repairs or anything as I don't see the point.
It's been soaked since and doesn't have any problems..(yet).
So it is still waterproof? But even if so, it's very disappointing that this happens after only 9 months and without the grill it looks ugly, like it was used for ten years.
I also have that strange, squeaky vibration motor sound. I can live with the former, but both defects combined are almost too much.
I'm going to talk with the Sony chat tomorrow and see what they'll say.

It's not a problem, they used a cheap glue to stick that grill under the phone and in time, hot temperatures and maybe water, the glue just lost his consistency. Try to keep it on or just apply some drop of good glue and do not close the speaker (LOL)
BTW, I can move mine too but until stay there I do not touch it.
I'm going to post this thing that happen to me yesterday I think I was the only one and I found this, yesterday I saw how my grille can move and I was like , I take great care of the phone, doesn't have scratches of any type, and now this.... I will try to remove it very very careful and apply some kind of glue I have, and see what happen
A little too late to this thread, but just posting my own experience. The little speaker mesh literally fell off of my Xperia Ray. After it comes off, you can not hear anything on the speaker phone when talking to someone and Music, although loud comes with very high frequencies. To fix this, you take black electrical tape, cut just a small part and stick it over the plastic, then use a clear plastic tape to cover that along the bottom. The sound is not like the original but still works better than no mesh. The in-Call volume of these phones is a major disappointment. You are right, the build quality of most android phones is junk. What the Android world needs badly is the iPhone build quality.
Well I'm back with some things to say, some friends I know seem that doesnt have this problem at all, weird, after some time I finally removed the grille it was just holded with strong by a very small side, I try glue that have a color like orange/brown (I dont remember the brand) it work ok but just for 2 weeks, after that it starts to move again, so now I try a Gel glue and it seems that work excellent, it doesn't move at all, with the other glue it holds, but it can move a little, seems that this glue is the solution, and it says in the boxx is water resistant so, better for me, I have to say that you have to ve very careful because a little drop in the mic and nobody will hear you again, the same for the speaker, so far I dont have problems :victory: so if you found a gel based glue in a little stick, try it if you have this problem

Hi
Does anyone know where I can buy this part (black botton cover)?
I have tried to find a place that sells it and I could not find one.
However, I replace the screen on my phone (Xperia Z1s C6916) about three months ago, and only ripped the flex cable connecting the audio jack and sensor. When I did that, I bought a screen that was already connected to a frame. However, I forgot to transfer the mesh covering the speaker. I did not know it was just a mesh piece on the outside until now... I took the phone apart, yet again, ripped the flex cable connecting the microphone... Why are parts for this thing so expensive!?

Mine fell off yesterday. I bought mine in September. I'm glad the water proofing hasn't been affected by it (going by others' accounts, I'm too chicken to try it myself.) I was really upset cause I bought it only for the waterproofing and the other features were a plus. I'll super glue it then. India is getting too hot, the glue melted off.
Yeah mine fell off too, it's been off for a while now.
My USB flap fell off too, though it was probably my own fault over using it without care. So I guess mine isn't waterproof any more ? :victory:
