Ok so I love android and all of it's openness and mods. I like to modify all electronics that I have. But the only problem I have with it is that it isn't smooth. I have had an iPhone in the past and it was smooth. It just confuses me how 1ghz can lag on a mobile os. I guess this rant is to ask how do I smooth the edges. I've tried many roms and some were better than others. One major thing I want is when I unlock it, when I slide homescreen, and when I open the app drawer to be smooth. Any ideas settings roms?

Read through a lot of threads, and understand that there isn't what you're looking for. You might try MIUI, people report it as smooth - never tried it personally. Also, for launcher use LauncherPro, it's smooth.
About the gigahertz stuff: CPU speed doesn't matter as much as SW does. And there is no "smoothness support" yet.
Android isn't smooth. It's powerful, though. Personally, I like the trade off.

delete all your apps, turn off all services, and it will run just like the iphone. kill every app after you use it. - that's what the iphone does.
You can tweak the internal task killer to speed up your phone. It takes some work and testing. This thread has the directions and explanations.

Geo411m's ROM has these tweaks built in and they work really well.

This has been useless since Froyo. As I once researched and posted, Froyo kills the processes much earlier than Eclair (OOM=12 instead of 16) and considering the amount of memory on Nexus - you never get anywhere below 100MB free unless you run a super-heavy app, and those never stay in background.
Now these tweaks don't do a thing.
does power mean smoothness? I just don't get the concept of having a fast processor and not being smooth. I mean it is almost the same speed as my netbook... on a phone. It seems like that should be smooth. Maybe I'm asking for to much. But another thing I have seen videos of people on cyanogen and it is running smoothly with a live wallpaper. I have never got cyanogen to run smoothly for me even with a still wallpaper. Is there some magical setting everyone but me knows about?

Power = ability to do things. Not CPU power, OS power.
Smoothness = frame rate of transitions between screens in UI. By most part, it's a result of heavy GPU utilization (which Android doesn't do stock) and programming that puts graphics as top priority (which isn't the case with Android). When CPU is made busy making beautiful graphics, it makes beautiful graphics. When it's not the main concern - it makes what it makes.
Again, you seem to be complaining about the launcher - otherwise you wouldn't bring this live wallpaper thing. So go download LauncherPro.
Folks go on about miui being smooth but personally I found it quite choppy at times, and this was most evident using the miui default launcher and comparing to say an iPhone 4, it looks very stuttery. Its better with launcherpro, but then you've lost half the reason for using it.
I am using cm6 and a theme (minimal matte fwiw ) and its very smooth and nice looking (and believe me I am very sensitive to, and loathe slow performance on a latest Gen phone).
Best compromise I've found yet on android.
I use the latest CM6 nightlies with Launcher Pro Plus and have a lot of widgets on my homescreen, smooth as butter.
I do remember the homescreen being a bit choppy when I ran 2.1 on my N1 though...
Have you messed with the performance settings? I hear that switching the performance setting to 24 instead of 34 helps. I'm not on cyanogen right now so I don't remember the exact setting but it is cyan settings then performance.

Truth of the matter is, is that Android running as SMOOTH as an iPhone would be difficult, simply because the IOS operating system doesnt allow any applications to run in the background. Android has TONS of apps that run in the background, and its still smooth as hell if your running the right ROM.
In all honestly, as much as I LOVE enomther and cyan ROMS, MIUI is hands down the smoothest and fastest ROM I have ever used. Give it a shot. I promise that if you can get past the iPhonish look, you will LOVE the speed and fluidness of the ROM. I cant recommend it enough.
I have used the miui roms and they are awesome. But honestly I just feel like a sell out while running them.

The reason why even iPhone 3G's can feel "smoother" than Android phones at most times: hardware acceleration.
Ever since the 2G they've had a dedicated GPU which was used to its fullest in basic UI interactions. We see phones like the SGS with freak GPUs but Android doesn't allow full use of them.
Phandroid made that article on a supposed "Gingerbread" leak. They claim it will introduce hardware acceleration. Hopefully thats true and we'll never hear complaints about a laggy UI again!

Yup, most of the smoothness complaints is just hardware acceleration complaints. After gingerbread if it has hardware acceleration, we won't hear the laggy UI issue, we'll just hear the bandwagon "Fragmentation!"

Zeam launcher + Universal Lagfix + tweaks + disable all animations = smooth as buttah
I own both as well. You can flash a custom ROM to the device with lots of the useless junk removed, and install a lag fix. Start with the FAQs on this site if you haven't already.
I must say though, I have never been so torn between two devices. I love the iPhone 4s stability and application quality. On the other hand, the SGS satisfies my primal need to mod and hack things. I also prefer the weight of the sgs. iPhone is a bit too heavy and fragile for my liking.
just install a custom ROM for your corresponding firmware and voodoo lagfix. done.
smooth and fast.
no need for taskkillers either.
The only thing that is (still) better on the iThing is the browser.

It its smooth because iOS implements hardware acceleration. It uses the graphics chip to render the animations, which makes everything seamless and smooth. This is easy because iOS is designed completely around around the iPhone. Android was designed for use in hundreds of devices with different hardware, so it does not use hardware acceleration (yet).

Well that is not the case completely. TouchWiz was indeed optimized for our graphics chip, however, without a lagfix, the access to the data is too slow and in froyo, the touchwiz launcher is too directly ported from the galaxy tab which causes our device to first render everything in 1024x600 and then scale down to 800x480 which costs a lot more resources than just rendering 800x480 or 960x640 (as on the iPhone). With the right mods, all this is corrected and you will find your SGS just as smooth as an iPhone 4. However all this requires a lot of reading and a significant amount of patience...
But It's definitely worth the reward.

Or we all could start mass complaint/class action against Samsung
This phone has been heavily advitised but does not work out of the box.
I received 1 offical update via Kies just after launch, phone went from totaly useless to usable to a degree. I updated to Froyo via reg hack and phone is better but still lags. GPS is still out. Battery life is still crap. Browsing crap, WiFi crap. Both were good on Eclair
Thats funny. Is there any device where someone hasnt brought up class action? Its like suing dodge cause they advertsed the 69 charger had big engine..but suspension and drag stunk... You could wait for the test drive results and dont buy one...unless you just think you have a right to have samsung make something better. i like mine. I also like finding improvements..sure.

I am using launcher pro and so far, super satisfied with it. I am on stock JP6 Froyo and no Voodoo but still smooth as butter. I am amazed, I didn't turn off any effects.
Side by side to an iPhone 4, no problem beating the smooth game although iPhone seems more consistent. At some point though, launching apps or swiping from left to right seems faster on the SGS. No kidding.

Hello Fellow Members,
Okay I have been reading a lot of complaints about the Note being laggy and frankly even I came across a couple of Galaxy Notes at two different malls/stores on display and they both lagged like anything. Although the lag was for just a couple of seconds but it was very frustrating. I noticed the lag throughout in the OS, right from swiping the home screens to scrolling in the settings or scrolling the browsing or while opening the apps. (Any app). And it became even more frustrating to see a previous model (Galaxy s2) working as smooth as melting butter. I operated them side by side and, man the difference was noticeable, seriously NOTICEABLE. I was soooooooooo disappointed. I had the cash with me but I was just not willing to believe, such a high spec’d phone would lag . And eventually I came from the store without purchasing one .
I have read on XDA forums also where many G-Note users have complained about their experiences of Galaxy Note being laggy. Hence, I would “request” you all to please make short videos of your galaxy Notes, upload on youtube and share the link with us here, so that someone who wants to buy a NOTE would see the amount of laggyness of the phone and then decide, whether this lag is acceptable or inacceptable for him/them. Please show the scrolling on contacts, S-pen notes, swiping between home screens, scrolling the browser etc.
Please guys, come forward and do so, as I youtubed a lot but couldn’t find videos showing the laggyness of Note. All videos are filled with how smooth and fast the NOTE is. And seeing that, I went to purchase one but….
P.S: Rooting isn’t an option for me as this will void the warranty and I don’t want to void my warranty. Hence no rooting
Also, people say that ICS will solve the issue. I have seen on other phones that initially it does make the device faster but with daily usage, it becomes same as it used to be with the previous version of OS.
Rooting will void your warranty but but if done in correct way you can unroot and get it back.
Older firmware were slow and laggy but LC1 and LC2 are smooth.
Have you tried V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts before ? You'll need root though.
These littile thing inject steroids in your phone.
Wait wait wait wait.
You have used such difficult Jargons of Andriod world that I am just not able to catch you up .
Okay, as you have mentioned, V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts will require Rooting my device (although I have no idea what are V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts), but tell me these LC1 and LC2 are firmware updates, right? And they can be updated "without" rooting the device. Isn't it?
And this update will make G-Note blazing fast, like s2?
Guys, please respond and help.

Dont compare Note and S2. The same processor and same GPU in S2 powers a smaller screen with less pixels and less DPI. Here in Note you have the same processor and GPU power a huge HD screen with the best DPI in business. Also all the apps are built on hdpi resolution while the note is xhdpi resolution so the apps and launchers tend to get laggy. Also there is no hardware acceleration supported in much apps. I am using ICS Stunner and using it on 240 dpi which is hdpi resolution and its silk smooth. Butter!
And i dont have time to make videos. So if you can then take my word. If not then each one to his own
Cheers!! Enjoy your Note!!
You don't need to be rooted to update firmware.
Use pc odin or built-in OTA (Over The Air - Phone updates itself using 3G/WiFi) update feature.
update to the latest stock firmware released in 2012.....should b much smoother. But we're all waiting for ics which should be out very soon.
advice: go bak to the shop......remove all widgets on homescreen and/or change wallpaper to static nd try. I have noticed that some live wallpapers and widgets cause lagginess. I usually remove everythng from the homescreen and start adding them 1 by 1 and checkng.....one widget sometimes is the culprit.
Ics should smooth everythng as some have reported.
Owned a Note and 7.7
7.7 slightly slower than Nexus, Note is laggy, esp when not turned off for days.

I am not saying it should run games which require excellent acceleration or requires immense power from GPU, as I am not into heavy mobile games. All I require is butter smooth execution of day-to-day usage. Be it scrolling contact, scrolling web page, swiping through 10 application screens or swiping 7 home screens.

I never specifically told about games. To have everything buttery smooth u require hardware acceleration which gpu provides in the apps browser and launchers. So gpu is not just for games. Now you got why i told you all that above. To have everything running smooth on such big screen and resolution u require hardware acceleration. Ever noticed lag in all third party launchers? Its becoz they don't have hardware acceleration. The stock TW launcher is partially hw accelerated so still runs somewhat smooth.
The original dpi of Note is 321
BOOMED from my BOMBASTIC NOTE
Tbh you can't really blame the note for being a tad laggy since it is basically a computer and all computers ( even the best) will come across a type of lag within its lifetime.

Well then that sucks
here is a tip to the op.. You will find 99% of all problems you look for.. If you didnt look, you would not know there are problems.
The key to happiness in life is being happy with what you have and setting your expectations ot a reasonable level..
If you dont need the large screen, go buy something else. If you do need the large screen, then you have no choice but the note..
so either relax and enjoy your note or be paranoid about this and every other device on the planet, and buy every new device as it comes out and drive yourself into a frenzy of despair about this problem, that problem, this issue that issue until you realise all this agony and money has not fixed a single thing in your life, you are stressed, depressed and you end up a bankrupt nuerotic..

Nice post though! Loved it.
I am using stock GB and I have almost no lag. Maybe you should make a video and show us what lag you are talking about.
I am using stock rom (gingerbread) at the moment and experience none of the lag you refer to. I also tried some of the ics roms and also no lag.
The only time my phone 'hesitates' is sometimes when I unlock it as it switches from widget locker to lock screen. Now as it is a 3rd party app doing it, I can hardly blame the note. I love my note and even got rid of my galaxy nexus and asus tf101 when i got the note.

It's on the latest firmware available in my country (Malaysia)
All I can think is, Gingerbread is just far inferior to ICS or Honeycomb. Nokia Lumia is a lot faster too (hope that word is not banned here)
Then again, some items images/video captured in 7.7 is only 3.2mp vs 8mp.
I owned a T705, it was my phone and tablet, i loved it.
However, the camera was bad, and the whole Interface was very jittery.
I understand that this device is not getting updates from Samsung, but man, i sure miss the screen real state, also beautiful.
Have lollipop custom roms reached a state where they improve over samsungs touchwiz performance?
I am considering it, alas i read that a new Tab S might be coming.
Thanks.

Well, one of the problems if you own a T-705 is that under CM you will lose the phone features (CM 11 and 12 are for the T-700 only). I suggest that you try IronRom instead: definitely smoother than stock.
One rumor we heard is that the next generation flagship tablet will have a 4:3 screen ratio and a 64-bit processor, but it won't be coming until the end of year or late summer at the least. My preference is to have a 16:10 screen on my tab s.
I'd like a 4:3 personally since I do way more reading on my tablet than anything else. 16:10 is better for watching videos, but that's what I have my TV for
I don't have the money to upgrade so soon though
Thank you all for your Input.
My question is, with say, IronRom, is the performance improvement noticeable?
I found The Tab S beautiful, but very choppy overall, maybe the processor wasnt optimized for 2k, even with some custom ROMs (i used Selamba mostly back in the day) the performance of the UI was very below par, however, applications ran well enough, this led me to believe that it might have been touchwiz and not the hardware itself.
Thank you.

Come on guys, which part of the stock GUI or launcher is actually choppy? Where is the mythical lag? Haven't seen it myself.

The part where its choppy on stock firmware is just scrolling through the launcher. It lags when just scrolling through the launcher and switching between some apps (ex clash of clans). Iron rom has none of that. Sometimes the GUI lags when you have too many apps open and it uses all the ram. Example like 16 games open all at once. It can freeze and force a reboot. GUI doesnt lag that much like the launcher. Hope this helps!

I am not sure which part of scrolling through launcher is supposed to give lag. I have three screens worth of application icons in the app launcher and I had no problems with those. As for having 16 games open, I don't see how that represents typical usage.

Lol yeah. If your a typical user, 4-6 apps open or less, it can handle it. 16 apps open would be a user who stresses the cpu and gpu.
Well, in my experience there is some lag basically everywhere with the stock ROM, not only in the launcher. Loading pages and scrolling is also slightly choppy in any browser, and also in applications that use WebView components.
I wouldn't rate this as very evident, especially because the CPU has plenty of cores, but it is there.
With IronRom + SkyHigh kernel + Nova Launcher + things get smoothened just that small bit that makes everything feel right

My main problem with the 705 is the poor battery life. Does IronRom improve this?
I mean reallyyyy it just lags lags and feels that someon is strangling those octa-cores i had a note 3 before and i already can tell you this phone is a downgrade in terms of software. The only thing that stands in this phone is the gorgeous display. I could have said lollipop on note 4 is garbage but thats what it is. Please share your experience and let samsumg know that iphone 4 is still getting updates faster than samsungs latest flagship

Lollipop is definitely faster than Kitkat for me.
It's also faster than the Note 3.
You are correct about the slow updates though.
Same thoughts as Nuu...besides the slow updates mine is smooth as on 5.01 =)
No complaints as all...cept maybe faster Multitask button....
same for me too lag in multitasking button, and laggy call screen and some bugs. without these its just great for me fast and reliable and good on battery too. performance is on par with my s6 edge and note 4 is way better in multitasking and ram management.

Agreed, but that's why CM12 exists: blazing fast and quick on the updates (currently on lollipop 5.1.1). Other option would be to sell the Note and buy the new LG G4 for example
You do know that you could just install a 3rd Party Launcher onto your Note 4? You don't have to stick with touchwiz.

If you don't care about the camera or s-pen, CM12 would be an option. The camera thing has always stopped me from using CM on my Note 4 and my S3. I nicely debloated TW based rom and a different launcher like Nova is what I always did. YMMV.
Stock touch wiz is pretty crappie I've not had the lag like you described but just not a huge touch wiz fan.
you can get a sped up launcher in the apps section which helps quite a bit and makes it as snappy as I can be. But as above you best bet is a 3rd party launcher.
Do some debloating or use Simplrom which is already heavily slimmed down And has very good speed.
and we have 12.1 in the pipeline which should be good also.
Don't write ya note 4 off yet

The samsung touchwiz cam is quite a nice *free* app and I understand some people might miss it. And it's definitely better than the CM stock camera app, I don't like that one too much neither, it's just too basic. But luckily there are some quite good 3rd party cam apps out there nowadays. My previous favourite was FV-5 camera, but I'm now really hooked on Snap Camera. You can download a trial in the playstore, see if you like it. Picture quality in TW using a 3rd party cam is always the same as in CM, so that's good way to judge if you like it.
And about S-pen, that works great in CM12, out of the box, including hovering. Sure, out of the box it's a bit less integrated into the system, but there are some really nice apps for it if you want some more integrated s-pen functionality, mimicking pretty much Touchwiz, including a similar s-pen popup menu and for example cropped screenshots. See the video here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448 With this app you pretty much have the same S-pen functionality as Touchwiz.
Yes i can do that but the skin and the thing that kills the cpu is touchwiz which is in setting + dialer + snote + etc and all those cannot be changed by another launcher

Its wierd but ive been using nova for years. But stock tw launcher is faster than nova in 5.0 i noticed that on my friends phone. He had stock and i had nova but app opening response etc was faster on tw there is basically delay on nova. So i rolled back to tw
And i think slowdown problems could be about apps. Cuz i had wierd slowdowns on 1st update but boc3 totally fixed all problems for me like i said my problems are multitasking button delay(which exist on my s6 too i dont expect a fix for it), call screen delay and gpu bug other these its really a great update for me.

The Nexus probably has encryption enabled, which slows the device down. And is this an Exynos ? That device seems to respond faster in Touchwiz than the snapdragon.

Yes, it's the Exynos version, and if we active the Knox continues protection, doesn't change nothing, some users even reported that activing this feature improves the overall performance.
not seeing the issues you are seeing.
Stock Samsung Lollipop is better than Stock Samsung KitKat for sure.

Love posts like this. You did not see it, so naturally did not happen
Touchwiz is laggy in places and this is not something that even surprises anyone anymore. Use a nexus 6 for a few days and come back to note 4, yea the lag can get to you at times. However its fine as an overall package and that's all that matters.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just not seeing it on my phone.
This is useful information which means there are *conditions* for the problem to show itself.
If the guy is really interested in knowing why there is a discrepancy in experiences he will ask me for more details in my setup.
Is that even a conversation samsung itself knows that TW is laggy but the whole point of this just look at Sense UI on the old m7 i mean even its 3 years old but it feels faster than note 4 which has that fancy octa core processors. But you see the point is that it doesnt matter how many cores you have under the hood. Optimization is the key . if i have buggati veyron with flat tyres i would be outrun by a golf. Let me say again the whole point of this is to let samsung hear our plea and respond

It would be nice if they even gave us the choice of an AOSP rom with their camera and some TW functions. With a custom kernel and TW apps frozen, TW is fine and doesn't lag too much but to do this you need to root and invalidate your warranty.
OD2 build for 910G is blazing fast!! the way kitkat is meant to be .. the previous version boc6 was not up to the mark. Probably 910F and other users will feel the difference once u get OD series roms
