It might be some hardware problem too. It was normal before or not?
Do you have usb debugging on?
P.S. And try it on some other laptop or desktop. Put it on other usb port on laptop, change USB cable...

Hm, I forgot one thing. Did you try to reboot and retry? I always get like that when I charge my phone on wall charger, and then connect it to USB. I must reboot before I get connection, and it is charging just like in your case.
@darkclub
Have you ever tried to uninstall the usb drivers on your PC before?
If not, maybe you should try the following two ways :
Method 1 :
1 . Try uninstall your usb drivers , and then restart your PC . Then try to reinstall your usb drivers again . then ;
2 . Try reconnect the USB cable u'r janice device to your PC again. and see if it still happens as before ? If not , then try :
3. Samsung USB Driver Full Package ((http: //goo.gl/MWyaf7))
Method 2 :
1 . Please install "ADB Driver Installer" ((http: //goo.gl/5qTm2B))
2 . Connect Janice device to your PC/Laptop
3 . Having janice device is connected , it will display a dialog box or Alert Warning " DRIVER incorrectly "
4 . Click " Driver incorrectly " and then click " INSTALL "
5 . "ADB Driver Installer" will fix that does not match the driver .
6 . Upon Process Completed , it will display a dialog message "DRIVER STATUS OK"
7 . Done. And see if it still remains the same .
Note :
1 . Way it is used if the solution has been given by two senior people at the top have done .
2 . And, your data cable condition, certainly not having problems .
3 . I 'm just trying to help . Do it carefully and your own risk!!
Hope it helps.

Its not only about the machines, its also about the USB cable and USB slot, you need to isolate the problem by way of elimination....get a hold of another original samsung USB Cable to isolate that is not the cause and than examine your Phone USB slot for damage/mislaigned pins ...you can try moving the usb plug to see, if connection is being established

Assuming you did not just buy any compatible cable, much to my regret, I myself have bought and found unusable .
and you have tried the Quick Guide
If phone is not being detected of a sudden (Quick Guide)
1. Reboot PC after a power cord pull and Reboot Phone after a Battery Pull , try USB connection
2. Try using a different Samsung USB cable (must be sumsung and nothing else)
3. Try a different USB port (use USB slots at the back of PC)
4. Try on a lap top or different PC
5. Try install nexus drivers - needed for ICS firmwares
6. Make sure you don't have fast charge on.
Trick : Putting your Phone into download mode and connecting it with USB cable to PC will do it automatically. Meaning drivers will be installed by windows If there are none.
Frankly, these works for me all the time, so I am a bit clueless as to why you are unable to. I mean losing USB connection is pretty common, happens every now and than.
You should also try switching off WIFI , reboot the phone, reboot the PC, start Odin and than plug in the phone ( this worked for some)
Since the USB is trying to connect but not recognized as to what it is, you should try again, this time using device manger as mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27205737&postcount=4571
thats all I can think of
Finaly solved my problem!
Thanks!

Try this,

Boot into Download mode & again let windows install required drivers.
Boot normally & again let it install whatever things that are required to run things
& you are thru. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a USB driver issue. Do you have kies installed, or the stock usb drivers installed? Mine can be a bit flakey when connecting with USB though.
Actually sounds like something that happened to me. After upgrading kies my usb drivers got updated to but my pc showed missing id whenever my note got connected. Only solution i found is to reinstall the usb drivers, disconect the pc from internet and then connect the note. After drivers are installed i can connect to the internet again. Shoud i connect the note while connected to internet gives me the missing hardware id again and makes me install drivers again. Hope this helps you.

Hello everyone,
Here the problem, I just acquired a Galaxy note and I can not connect to my Windows 8 PC (or windows 7) . Whether with or without kies.
In the device manager I have "unknown device"
I also tried odin mode and recovery of origin, but no way to install the drivers.
The galaxy shows in the bar notif "mtp connected" ( the smartphone is charging)
It is version 2.3.6. stock not root with kernel: [email protected]#2
did someone have an idea?
thank you in advance for your help.
Sorry for my english, i'm french.
U can set it in Settings > USB
But since u are using GingerBread, ur device might not be able to detect the usb port as more than charging port. This is very unlikely but it can happen..
And do Enable USB Debugging..
i have tried but it doesn't work too
uninstall kies and drivers reboot the pc. then download
http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows
and install it without the phone connected. connect the phone and see what happens.. when you connect the phone, there will be notification of drivers being installed in the system tray of pc. click on it and you will see what is installed and what is failing.
Change ur usb cable to another usb port. This happened to me last time when I tried to flash new rom via odin. Everything is fine but the odin didn't detected it. b4 do that remember to install ur GN driver.

i have tried use 3 diferents usb cable too... no result

There could be a problem with the usb port itself. You could try to clean it and test again.

If you have not done it already, try wiggling the mini-usb cable to see if it improves anything. Is the phone charging? It might be a hardware problem, I have read in some other post that it is the motherboard. Sorry, I can not think of anything else.
