How do I root on 4.4.2? I have an unlocked moto x and the bootloader is unlocked
There are probably at leat 200 threads on how to do this, as well as a sticky or two. If you can't figure out how to root an unlocked phone, it's best left stock. You're asking for the basics, and if you can't figure it out, odds are you're likely to break something and have a paperweight on your hands.

Im an HTC veteran I know how to do all this stuff. I can only find ways of rooting for 4.4 not 4.4.2 and the moto x toolkit wont open for me
Toss the toolkit and see this guide. Has everything you need to know. Use fastboot and learn more about this stuff...versus clicking in a toolkit.

Rooting an unlocked phone is the same, regardless of who the OEM is. And if you "know how to do all of this stuff", why not search and read stickies, rather than using a toolkit, which tend to cause more problems than they solve.

flash update supersu in recovery or if you already have twrp on your x, then when in twrp and select reboot system, it will ask if you want to root phone, at which point you say yes and it will install super su before rebooting. once it boots, there will be a notification to go to play store to update super su app and install binaries. after that, you golden.
As mentioned above. Follow one of the many guides about rooting.

Ok dumb question, but I'm still trying to learn here.
*a bit of background
Rogers 4.4.2 moto x
Locked boot loader
No root
Dead stock
*
There are 3 custom recoveries for the Moto X I've found out about so far.
TWRP and CWM (used Clockwork on all my other rooted devices) but these are specifically for unlocked boot loader device. Unlocking the boot loader doesn't seem that difficult (just go to the Motorola website I believe (I have the Rogers XT1058 so it should work )).
Then there's Safe Strap. Supposedly you don't have to have the boot loader unlocked for this to work so this seems like an easier method to gain custom recovery.
Now my dumb question(s):
Is the only difference the need if the boot loader to be locked or unlocked?
Do I need to run slap my moto or a similar tool to disable write protection?
The main question really:
I am really interested in Gravity Box! Would SafeStrap be the way to go? Or do I need to go through Slapmymoto, TWRP or CWM and go from there?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Still trying to learn about what's what because I love this phone but really just want to get rid of the navigation bar and have PIE controls for a full screen mode
Thanks everyone! Good day to all!

Since you're updated to 4.4.2 you will need to unlock your bootloader to root the phone(which also voids the warranty on a Rogers phone).
Once it is unlocked install whichever custom recovery you prefer and have fun modding.

Steve-X is right because you are not rooted right now you wont be able to install safestrap.
your only option if you want root is to unlock your bootloader.
but if you do that you have a choice of Clockwork mod or TWRP custom recovery.(me personally i would not use safestrap on a unlocked bootloader)
if you dont want to unlock your bootloader then im sorry to say there is no root option for you right now or custom recovery's
if you do thou rooting your phone is very simple
unlock bootloader
install customer recovery of your choice
flash SuperSU
then you have Root.

I've been searching and reading to no avail and have lot's of questions and thoughts needed:
Ok, so I was avoiding updating at all cost.. But as the update notifications became more frequent. I accidentally clicked it and my phone began to reboot and update. now on 4.4.2 and here are the questions...
1. Why can't I downgrade a bootloader? (so I can root and such hackery)
2. If I unlocked my bootloader would I be able to use any of the root methods?
2a. Would I be able to use the recovery mode trick here and get SU, or root or something going?
3. Is there a way to unroll an upgrade? either by recovery or some secret downgrade recovery menu? LOL, yea I'm desperate.
My goals are:
- try and root and get the amr-wb codec for tmobile activated by editing build.prop/system files/modems WHATEVER!, it's not activated.
- I miss viper4android, A LOT!
- Just regain the control of everything
I'm willing to do whatever thru Motorola to get it downgraded, I'm am comfortable with adb, flashing, rooting, editing files, and walking into dark rooms.
So please, fill me in people.
p.s. don't tell me to search.... I'm frustrated and have been researching for days.......
Read the stickies dude. There's a complete guide in there. If you can unlock boot loader...root is easy.
If you can't unlock boot loader, no root for 4.4.2.
And no, you can't downgrade now.

No not any. You don't want to use the locked bootloader root methods if your bootloader is unlocked. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you do this to root:
Rooting a Moto X With an Unlocked Bootloader
This works to root a Moto X on 4.4.2 as well as 4.4. You will be fine if you just stick to the instructions I posted.

Even with an unlocked boot loader, you can not downgrade the boot loader from 4.4.2. No matter what version of the X you own, once you are on 4.4.2, you are stuck on 4.4.2.

Who needs to downgrade when all he was asking for was root? An unlocked bootloader will allow for you to flash a custom recovery and flash root or ROMs. If the the OPs only intention is downgrading the unlock codes are probably his best bet.

For one I was responding to another poster who incorrectly told him he could just downgrade if he unlocked his boot loader. I wasn't replying to the OP, as evidenced by the fact I quoted the poster above me.
Secondly, with a locked boot loader, the only way to root was to downgrade to 4.2.2, use an exploit to root, then upgrade to 4.4. There is currently no way to root 4.4.2 without unlocking the boot loader.

That is the reason but his specific request was to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2. When you said unlock and fast boot flash what you need, in the context of the thread it came across as you were saying he could downgrade with an unlocked boot loader. If the OP is new to Android, rooting, or the Moto X, then he could easily misinterpret what you were saying and end up bricking his device. You have to be clear when talking about rooting and unlocking.
If I misinterpreted your post, others easily have as well. However, the OP should have taken about ten seconds and searched for his answer before starting another thread that just muddies an already confusing issue.
Nothing I post is intended to hurt your feelings or call into question your knowledge. I just don't want people to break the devices they spend hard earned money on.
@ Orange, I didn't mean to offend you if it came off that way, and you didn't offend me either.
Nonetheless I don't really see how my post could be misunderstood. The original post clearly says he wants root. I gave him a straightforward way to achieve that. Unless someone only read the title skipped everything else and read my post, which would be just silly

well that link is to every guide you would need to get your phone rooted.
but here are a couple question i need you to answer and i can point you in a better direction
1.what Carrier is your device on
2. is your device a Dev Edition or no
answer these questions for me and i will point you to the guide you need to use
here is also some other basic info you may want to know.
if you device is a non Developer edition then you will only be able to root up to 4.4 as of right now the only way to root 4.4.2 is with a device with its bootloader unlocked. the only way to unlock a devices bootloader is for it to be a developer edition or with a carrier that allows the devices bootloader to be unlocked.
hope all this information helps you and i will be waiting for you to answer my questions so i can point you in the right direction.
Its a non developer edition moto maker x VZW , I'm actually had issues with rooting it, but finally got it under 4.2.2 and was also having issues because I was using my work computer, and unfortunately that is the only computer I have access to that works, I saw on the rootzwiki that there is a safestrap version of 4.4.2 and it has the kernel and radio to flash and I was hoping I'd be able to do a jump to that
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
I haven't done the RockMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo processes on the locked bootloader X. There were some threads where some had written up the process with their tips and hints inline.. You might want to try and follow one of them if you've had issues. Just be sure to NOT install the 4.4.2 OTA on your phone in the process!!
If you ultimately need help getting to rooted 4.4 w/Safestrap 4.4.2, you'll probably want to have a thread title that is better suited to it.
For rooting you'll usually get pointed to one of the many threads on rooting via SlapMyMoto, but for safestrap with 4.4.2, I've only seen posts/links back to rootzwiki.com, so you might want to check over there.
@mr4r4n @dray_jr The link is to the guide that shows how to get to 4.2.2 way more than just rooting in that post. Then after you get there you would need follow @KidJoe advice.
as of right now you cant root 4.4.2 on a locked bootloader device. so if you want to keep root you will have to stay at 4.4

Hi, I keep seeing references to being able to get root with write protection enabled. That would at least be better than no root at all for some things, right? And yet I can't find info on how to get to that point. Links, advice, search keywords? I've perused the massive reference guides looking for more concrete info and I may just have missed the obvious. Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Did some more reading, feel like I may have found the disappointing confirmation that root isn't possible on 4.4.2. Clarification: If you managed to root before 4.4.2, you can retain root and upgrade to 4.4.2 with SafeStrap, but you won't be able to disable write protection, so you lose any changes you have made invoking superuser privileges after a soft reset of the device. If you didn't have root before, and you can't unlock the bootloader now, you're completely screwed, rootwise. Correct?

Correct?

It seems there's a couple ROMs now that may allow you root with write protection disabled on 4.4.2....IF you're still on 4.2.2 or 4.4. They are in development section, and there's a thread about it in general I think.
But if you're already on 4.4.2, no, you're out of luck. For now anyway. You can't downgrade 4.4.2 to do the process.
Please excuse my ignorance on this topic. My rooted moto x broke and I just bought a used one. The new phone is running 4.4.2 baseband MSM8960PRO_BP_2323.031.111.OOR KERNAL 3.4.43-G27DE6975.
The last time I rooted my moto withe the cracked screened I restored back to the pre camera updata and then eventually proceeded with the slapmymoto.
Can this still be done on my current phone. I have read some conflicting threads on this
Thanks!!!
4.4.2 cannot downgrade please don't try or you will 100% brick your X. What carrier are you on?

AT&T
Dont think AT&T can have unlocked bootloaders but that's easiest way to gain root access. But in development should be an exploit for 4.4.X I'll post a link. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771623

Thanks!! before I cracked the screen on my old one I had the boot loader unlocked and root access......this sucks.
Okay so UL BL is available for AT&T? Unlock on motos site first and get code. Once unlocked you can flash TWRP or CWM through fastboot reboot to recovery and when you reboot system it will root for you. Boom! lol

If you haven't already, check on the thread titled "China Middleman Back??" in the general sub-forum. He is selling bootloader-unlock codes for AT&T and Verizon devices. He may or may not have your code, but if not you get refunded...so no risk.
If he does, it will be absolutely fantastic for you because you won't have to rely on these exploits, and will gain permanent root-ability.
@A2Trip is completely correct in that you WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade.
The middleman is your only hope.
Good Luck :good:

No. At least not from the official Moto site. Both AT&T and Verizon FORBID Moto from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones.
Got it. USC got love...that sucks.

Agreed.
There IS a "temp-root" method already available for 4.4.2 (4.4.3+ patches it). It's the PIE exploit.
BUT!!! It is temp-only, does not allow write access to /system, does not disable write-protect, and the exploit must be run again (from ADB, so you must attach to a PC) each time you reboot...
So not very useful at all :/

You didn't have the BL unlocked if you were using SlapMyMoto - you were using a write-protect-disable exploit. BIG difference. If at any point you would have updated to 4.4.2+, you would have permanently lost root and write-protect-disable. Bootloader unlock is permanent. None of the exploits are.
Also, I KNOW someone is going to say it: Questions belong in the Q&A forum, not General. Your thread will probably be moved by a moderator..... In the future, be sure to post in the correct forums.
You're only option that I'm aware of would be pie root ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/orig-development/root-4-4-x-pie-motorola-devices-t2771623 ). It's a tethered root though so rebooting your phone will lose root access. Also no system write.
