Only that you'll give up your warranty (like all Motorola Dev phones) and it'll be available directly from Motorola online store (presumably under Shop All | Mobile Phones where the other Dev phones are sold).

DEV Editions have unlockable bootloaders without voiding the warranty. An unlockable bootloader allows you to flash a recovery not signed by Motorola (like TWRP or CWM) which will allow you to flash root and other .zips.
Non-dev editions on AT&T do not have the ability to unlock the bootloader.

So take it i have to make my own hotspot software for the moto X dev and it will not come with a recovery back to?
No, you'll be able to unlock the bootloader, root and install any of the methods that give the hotspot feature.

I'm going to copy/paste what I typed here ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52359376&postcount=13 as it definitely answers your question.

im going to repeat what has been said by me and others in the countless threads asking this same question....
The two developer edition moto X's come in black face, woven white back, with silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and say Developer Edition on back. They only come as 32 gig. When it comes to unlocking the bootloader, you can get the code from moto for free, and it does not void your warranty. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install 3rd party recovery, root, or install 3rd party roms (by 3rd party, I mean non-moto)
The retail x comes as black face, woven black back, and silver accents, or white face, woven white back, and silver accents. Moto Maker can be customized. These come as 32 or 16 gig.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and MotoMaker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
When it comes to hardware, the GSM Developer Edition (XT1053) is the same as the T-Mobile or Carrier Unlocked/Unbranded (XT1053) and uses the same ROMs. The big difference is getting the unlock code from Moto for the non-dev edition voids the warranty. When it comes to the (CDMA) Developer Edition X for Verizon, they too are identical hardware, but as said, you can't get the unlock code from Moto unless you have the Dev Ed. (Note: for a brief period, there was a Chinses site selling the codes, but it was shut down and is not presently available. No one knows for sure if it ever will be again)
If they are the exact same price, get the dev edition so you can unlock the bootloader without voiding the warranty.
If you have ATT, know that their X is the XT1058, you can not get its bootloader unlock code from Moto. More importantly, by specs it supports 2 additional LTE bands (originally said to only be used outside the USA, but lately there has been talk that ATT is using one of them in the USA now), but does not support HSPA on AWS (used by t-mobile for non-LTE 4g, but t-mobile has been reframing their 1900 from 2g to HSPA in some areas). So if you have AT&T but got the gsm dev, you'd be at risk if ATT starts fully using one or both of those "other" LTE bands in the USA in the future.
As for why unlock the bootloader, what would the average Joe gain by it? See -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html

As for "hot spot"... There is hotspot software in the X ROM. Since the gsm Dev uses the T-Mobile rom, it might work as is on ATT without modifications. You'll have to look that up. But there are other options to remove any "entitlement" checks (there are threads about it) or you can use WiFi tether when the Dev Edition is rooted.
I like developer. I think developer option has better opportunity than others.

thank for the information
I'm stuck on Verizon but I absolutely need a phone with an unlocked bootloader for what I'm trying to accomplish.
From what I can tell the Moto X seems like a good option. Unfortunately, what I've read seems to imply that the Verizon version's bootloader cannot be unlocked. Is that correct?
So other than getting the developer edition of the phone (which is obviously much more expensive), do the Verizon Moto Xs from the online motorola store have an unlocked bootloader or are they the same as one purchased from Verizon?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find a clear answer. Would really appreciate if someone could please clarify.
Thanks

Get the Developer Eidtion for Verizon. I think it's on sale ending today. There's a coupon code floating around I saw that will take off $100 dollars or so.

WHen it comes to the Moto X for Verizon there are 3 ways to get it... Developer Edition (on Moto's Dev Edition web site), Moto Maker edition (Moto's web site), or Verizon store (aka Retail edition).
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon have their bootloaders LOCKED. Motorola does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code. The only way to unlock it, would be if the Chinese Middleman (see thread in general section) is still available and selling codes, but he hasn't been as reliable lately (some users have received wrong code, some have received message back saying no code available).
They use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The Moto Maker and Retail are basically the same, except available as 16 or 32 gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking is not possible via Motorola. The only possibility is IF the Chinese Middleman will sell the code.
Whats the difference... my Verizon rep is providing pricing and options for the regular edition and the "Moto Maker Edition", but on the Motorola website all I see is the "Developer Edition" and in other news stories I see "Pure Edition"... whats the difference? Purely symantics for the same unlocked bootloader version of the Moto X 2014?

Moto 2013 - dev edition had an unlockable bootloader. you could get a version for at&t/tmobile or for verizon
Moto 2014 - pure edition has an unlockable bootloader and no carrier branding or apps. you can only get this for at&t/tmobile at full retail price through motorola's moto maker, and you can customize the colors and storage
Moto maker - lets you customize the design of your moto x (2013 and 2014). can not be used on the 2013 dev editions
there's some confusion here because you can use moto maker to make a pure edition moto x. however the important thing to know on verizon is you have 2 options: a preconfigured color & storage straight from verizon, or a customized version through moto maker. however you cannot get a pure edition on verizon

Moto Maker is the version where you get to customize it and select the colors you want. If you get this option and use either AT&T or VZW the bootloader will be locked down and not available to be unlocked unless someone comes up with a method to do so.
Pure Edition is a GSM only version (works on T-Mobile and AT&T) and it is sim unlocked as well as bootloader unlockable (the new GSM Dev edition)
Developer Edition is only available on the old Moto X, that was the version you have to pay full price for just like the current Pure, but the old Moto X had a VZW Dev Edition.
Excellent... thx. I guess I'll be getting the standard VZW one and then hoping "someone comes up with a method to do so"

As of right now, if you order a Verizon Moto X, you will be getting last years. They don't have an officially announced model yet (and I am speculating they could just release the new Droid (that looks really cool) and not an X).
My Verizon rep (we're Gov) definitely sent me pricing info on the "New Moto X - 5.2" etc... when I asked him yesterday AM he hadn't heard anything yet... but after doing some digging he was able to provide pricing etc this morning....

I'm a little bit confused. I want a moto x with all the moto apps like moto assist, voice control and active display. If I want to root the device and install xposed framework. Which one do I have to buy? I'm living in Germany and when I go to moto maker there is nothing I can't choose among different versions, except in storage size and colour.

All of this model discussion is for US models. There should be just one EU model (that I am aware of) that should work with all common bands in the EU and have the software of the Pure edition. The issue here is the US mobile industry is a mess and controlled by the mobile networks, making moving between providers (or traveling out of the US) a pain in the neck.
Unless your on T-Mobile in which case you can go overseas no problem. Love T-Mobile!
Singapore Use
Hi,
I live in Singapore. I just wanted to check that the pure edition should work here if I can get it shipped to me?
I know the LTE is not working for now but it should work on HSPA+ I think.
Will it still get the updates from Motorola/Google or are those USA specific?
Thanks a lot.
Santino
I'm shopping for an unlocked Moto X (2nd gen) and it seems to have several models which might meet my needs. I'm currently on AT&T in the U.S., so the phone needs to work on their LTE network for now. However, I might be interested in moving to T-Mobile at a later date (or to Ting, a T-Mobile MVNO).
I'm leaning toward the XT1095 "Pure" edition. Is there any reason this model would give me issues on AT&T ? (from looking thru the postings, it appears there were some issues in the past, but most of those seem to be older than 6 months ago) I'm also leaning towards buying this directly from Motorola on their website, since it looks like folks buying them on Amazon aren't always getting the model they think they are. Any buying advice in that regard ?
I'm typing this from my pure on AT&T right now. If you value rooting your phone now or ever in the future then you will purchase the XT1095.
I would buy through Motorola for the least amount of hassle. Also, the motocare insurance is pretty cheap.
And so I can make sure I get an XT1095 on the Motomaker website, after clicking "Buy," I select "Unlocked SIM or no-contract options" and then "Moto X Pure Edition", yes ? (i.e. not the "contract" or "Net10" options)
Yeah, I know...looks pretty obvious, but I don't wanna screw it up
