[Q] Broken headphone jack... What to do? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently, on CM10.2.1 I noticed my headphone jack stopped working. I updated to the latest 4.4.2 official update with the Israeli customization and this is still occurring. I'm only receiving audio to both right and left streams if I hold the connector in a strange angle, and if I don't, only the left stream works.
I'm having difficulty deciding what to do: a couple months ago I sent my device for repair to Sony because of a broken charging port and that costed 250 NIS (about 73 USD). My father replaced his iPhone 4S and 3GS batteries, so he has a little experience with repair, but I don't know whether to take the risk and repair at home or send the device to Sony.
Also, I don't have warranty. I read what it covers and it doesn't do anything for me anymore so I installed a ROM, but now I'm on the stock Sony firmware unrooted with a locked bootloader (flash tool displays it as unlockable).
Please answer if you can.

Repairing a phone is really not that hard. Only thing making it hard is because everything is extra covered due to the water and dust resistance.

But is repairing the XZ really hard? On iFixIt it says that repairing the headphone jack is difficult.

It really depends on what you mean with it being difficult.
I learned a lot by looking at disassemble videos like this one:

It's really no rocket science.
But do note that you'll probably lose the water resistance after doing this.

warranty repair refused, what does this picture mean?

Sent my kaiser to HTC for a warranty repair mainly due to the speaker not working (the loudspeaker works, not the ear speaker). The screen works fine, case is okay. Not too much else faulty, clip broken on battery cover, poor speakerphone performance from new, slow laggy interface from new inc on cooked roms.
I got a mail back saying I owe them £20 for looking at it (I never signed anything to this effect) and that the phone is liquid damaged (never been in liquid) and the warrany is void. They say it needs a new LCD screen, new MOBO, New Case.
How can my speaker not working be a fault of the fine case and working LCD screen???? They said please find attached invoice for repair quotation, nothing attached - only this picture illustrating the water damage - what the hell is it?

my guess is that would be what they consider the void sticker that has been "compromised" due to "water damage" if it were me I would be making calls and asking questions.... it sounds extremely hinkey to me.... I had a rep try to do that to me awhile back on another phone and I said I wanted to talk to the direct manager and they took care of it...... so I would be asking questions....

There is a little piece of " tape " inside the case of every phone that changes color when the phone is subject to moisture damage.
If this tape is tampered with or has changed it voids your warranty. It deters people from committing fraud, as is the charge for looking at your phone. are you the first owner ? I have also seen these tapes change due to high humidity and getting caught in a downpour.
Unfortunately they have the evidence of water damage. So I do not think you are going to get very far with the warranty aspect. But.......the righteous fight is the good fight. So good luck
ya.. I always wondered what that thing was...when its new, its white in color. I just did a warranty replacement and over the phone they asked me for the color of that pc..mine was white but I bet that if that pc is submerged in water it will turn to the color in your pix.
hey, my lcd cracked from my kaiser, i just searched for the lcd of it and opened up my phone and replaced it. just do the same but search for the internal ear speaker and do the same or replace the part that has to do with the ear speaker.
Thanks guys. I'm annoyed because I checked their emails and there is no mention, nor was there on the phone, of a £20 charge if it was deemed non-warranty, for them to look at/return it. Is it lawful for them to charge this?
I may look at fixing the speaker myself, given they claim it needs a new LCD and the only photo is of the moisture strip, not an ACTUAL corroded board etc, I am thinking that the speaker fault is nothing to do with moisture and legally they are liable if I send the phone to a 3rd party repairer and the repairer can find a physical fault and repair it wthout mention of water damage. I can then lay a claim on HTC as I have a 3rd party who can show evidence of fixing a fault that was not related to water damage.
What do you guys think? I know on pc's, DSG if they refused to repair one, would on occasion have the person take it to 3rd party and if the 3rd party did find a fault and fix it, DSG would cough up.
I have written to them and wait to see what they say.

I´ve been through this sticker-thingy-problem myself here in Sweden, a Nokia phone that never had been in contact with water. The sticker was pink and they would not let me repair it under warranty. It turned out that if you had the phone inside you jacketpocket the moisture inside your jacket could activate the sticker. This is not acceptable according to swedish law and I got help from the local consumer orginazation and Nokia changed their mind and got me a new phone. As it seems it turned out to be a faulty batteryconnector but they just checked the sticker and did not bother to check if something else was causing the problem.
This might also be the case with your phone, apparently theese stickers are to sensitive. A friend of mine got it to acivate just by going to Thailand.

It details the full response from HTC, claiming I need a new LDC (nothing wrong with it!) and not mentioning my faulty hands free kit. It also details my reply to them which will go off recorded delivery tomorrow and the legal action I plan to take if they don't play ball.

ive gotta say i would argue that i want imei proof as that could be any phone,i used to work for a phone company many moons ago and they were caught out many times with not providing correct photos of the phones.the sticker should be topped with a shiny coating when it gets damp or wet then the covering seperates from the lypmus paper and turns pink.
Well the long and short is that after a big complaints letter business, it has been returned to me for free and the warranty voided. They will not repair it, they will not look at what is actually wrong with it, they will only quote for replacing everything.
As it's only really the ear speaker and handsfree kit that is broken (I can probably fix the rest with software) I'm starting a new thread to find an indi repairer in the UK/parts supplier and depending what they find may sue HTC.

Stop writing them emails. CALL AND ASK FOR A MANAGER! Fight them like there is no tomorow. Tell them over and over that it has not been exposed to liquid damage. Tell them that you live in a high heat/humidity enviornment and it is unacceptable that their tape turned pink without being exposed to actual water damage. Tell the manager that you have done a lot of research and that many people have had this issue with their warranty repairs. Make sure you tell them that you are going to get the local law involved! Dont do this in a letter or email. If you are still within your 1 year warranty, force them to replace it. You have absolutely nothing to lose and a new kaiser to gain.
I tried, spoke to a senior & I sent a recorded letter to the MD of HTC UK personally, I gave them 7 days notice etc.
It resulted in the £20 return charge being waived and the phone sent back free, but that's all. They are adamant that the phone is now out of warranty due to moisture and wash their hands of it.
Besides, it's back with me now. I'm still happy to sue them though, if I get a good repairer to confirm that it was something other than water damage caused the speaker to fail and there is no corrosion.

HTC Warranty repair is a joke! I sent them my HTC TYTN because I got White Screen of Death. They charged me 20 dollars to look at it and then told me that a connector came of inside the phone and that it was "Customer Inflicted Damage". They then proceeded to tell me it would be 145 dollars to repair. after going back and forth with them I demanded my phone back and didn't get charged anything. I never dropped my phone or got it wet or even opened it up. They didn't want to admit they made a faulty product. They could't just say a connector broke off and we will fix it; just blame the customer, and I never got my outer box back. Luckly I had Insured my Phone from a third party. I told them every thing that had happened and they told me that it sounded fishy, so they went ahead and processed my claim. This Kaiser might just be my last HTC phone with the driver issues and such. BTW I bought this phone refurb from ATT not from HTC(not that it matters, they still got some money from it) If they bring the Touch HD stateside I might consider it, gone are the days when they came out with a phone and I jumped at it............. Rant over!

[Q] Salt Water Damage To Phone

Hey Guys,
Recently some salt water manage to get in my Samsung Galaxy S while i was fishing. Ive open my phone and clean as much corrosion as possible. Now I've notice that somethings are starting to fail on me in the past few hours My accelerometer, Charging port, 3.5mm head jacks, screen is all good and sim card slot. I can call out but cant take calls in. Chances are the corrosion can finish my phone off for good, in a few months time.
I was thinking if i can buy, new replacement parts or even the whole samsung galaxy s board ? and if any please link.

only level 3 services centre can get new boards but then you also need to write an IMEI to it and print out a new IEMI sticker so not something that can be done. buy a broken screen galaxy s from ebay and swap screens.
I'm sorry for your unscheduled swim.
Frankly,salt water damage is about as bad as it gets-anything depending upon capacitance or resistance will ultimately be affected by the salt.
In my opinion the whole phone is either now or soon will become erratic-even if you swap your screen into an ebay broken screen replacement as suggested I feel the screen from your current phone will deteriorate quickly so you may be sending good money after bad.

disappointed .... : \ Is the phone worth selling ? while phone housing is still new around 2 days old. Screen is still working but might die in the future due to corrosion but so far so good screen is fine.

Not as a whole phone, maybe for parts, but you would have to mention the salt water damage otherwise it would be fraudulent.
Some times things happen that are just plain accidents and most likely, like AshleySear said, it's bite the bullet time time.
Maybe look around eBay for a used phone, or wait for the new Galaxy S 2.

Page 121 of the i9000 user manual.. They have a built-in water sensor, to allow Samsung to identify when moisture has entered the device. If it's similar to the iPod's, it's probably inside the headphone port (so they can see the color change without opening the device).
So don't warranty it..
There is 6 in the galaxy s plus we have microscopes to check the board as well.

I hade same problem
I managed to drop my 2 weeks old GalaxySII in water. The left side of the phone was in sea water for maybe 2 seconds.
I dismounted the battery and tried to blow on it.
That war 10 days ago. Now that the warranty is gone and insurance dont cover anything I yesterday decided to disassemble it and try to clean it with filtered water.
Well the salt had dried and started to corrode on the circuits. It did not look promising but i gave it a try anyway. I used Electrical Cleaner and even bathed the circuit board in lukewarm water. The salt would not come off.
I dried then assembled the phone and pressed the power button with a spark of hope... nothing happened
So my conclusion is DO NOT BADE YOUR SMARTPHONE IN SEA WATHER!!
At least if your unlucky and it is to late put it in your pocket and annoy someone to push you into the sea. Then at least the insurance covers it
I guess my next phone will be a Motorola Defy+ or a Samsung Galaxy Xcover since i have a bad habit of breaking my phone.

[Q] Xperia Z totally DEAD!!

I'm new here so please be nice to me plus i apologize if my english is bad and please take your time to read. I REALLY NEED HELP
SO here it is
. i got my xperia z a month ago and updated the firmware version last week. But the problem is not there.
the Big problem is. me and my friends had a vacation and i am very confident to use my phone to use it on water but not totally submerged.... only on the surface of water where we can take some pictures.
I am very sure and 100% sure that I securely close the flaps ALL FLAPS. before taking it to the pool. we manage to use the phone to take pictures and take some video but NO ONE submerged it underwater. we use it like 10 - 15mins only.
After an hour not using it, i checked my phone to see if someone emailed me or sms me. and i found some problems in my phone. i saw the front and back camera including the led flash is moisted. YES moisted INSIDE. and found the screen not hanging, not lagging but glitching so then i turned off my phone because i was too worried it may die when i keep it open. BTW the battery level is somehow 50+% more. then after 4 hours when i saw the moist in both of the camera is gone.. i opened my phone and BOOM the battery level downed to 1% then after less than a minute my phone DIED. i tried to charge it for the first time and after an hour it turned on. and yes turned on directly to the lock screen. i know and as far as i know. when the battery is drained and charged you're not suppose to be on the lock screen in instance. you must be on the charging status where you can see the battery logo charging with the electric sign or the flash sign or whatever.
Then i tried to unlock my screen without a problem and still pretty smooth to use but after an hour or two the battery is still on 1% then i tried to run the camera and it DIED again. yes my Z died again.
We got home. after 4 hours of travel and within the 4 hours i didnt open or charge the phone. after that long hour when i got home. i charged the phone. Tried to charge it in a wall charger and tried it in usb connected to desktop charge but it only shows me a blinking red notification light.
i tried to turn it on but it wont. i tried to hard reset it with power button + volume up but nothing happen
So a while ago i brought my phone to the nearest Sony Service Center. Unluckily the phone is not yet available here in my country (philippines)
they said that the water went through inside and damage the processor, or something like the motherboard or something like the one that makes the phone alive. I ask them if they can fix my phone. they said there is no probability because the phone is not yet available in my country and so as the parts. he said if we try to repair it now it'll cost you like you bought a brand new one. so i was shocked and very sad.
I bought this phone on a Trusted online store but they can't help me. they have a 3days replacement warranty and a 1 year service warranty but as the rules follows. The Warranty is voided if a water proof or water resistance gadget is damaged by water or liquid device. my phone is 1 month old.
I am very depressed because here in the philippines its like gold to buy that phone. I'm a bit depressed about the Sony commercial boosting up my confidence to wet my phone. even if I / we didnt submerged it.
I need help! what do i do? i really love my xperia z and its my first flagship phone.
Take it to the service center and ask them to escalate this to area manager...

they did send it to area manager, but the manager said the same thing "Xperia Z is not yet available in the philippines and so the parts" but i saw some article and forums that the phone will be available by april.. its this month
Did you tried to dry the phone with hair dryer?And keep the phone on charger for hours.

for the past 24 hours upto now. i dried my phone through the heat of sunlight and the use of fan. I'm charging the phone right now but its notification light is different from what i expect. instead of a consistent red light - turned to green when almost full or fully charged... for about 6 hours now its only a blinking red notification light with 3-5 seconds interval.

P.S. That IPX7 think means : Temporary Immersion, Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water. So it is not that fun to play in the swimming pool

yes i've seen this link before. but the fact that i / we didnt submerge it underwater. the phone itself got wet from splashes of water from the swimming pool which is not too hot or too cold. its in average temperature. after an hour or less. i saw some moisture on the front and rear camera including the led flash light.
so does this mean i have no other choice but to buy a new one? ( but i can't, the phone's price is like gold here in Philippines )
is there no / any other solution?

the 3 days replacement warranty is over. the fact that i have this phone for a month now
1 year service warranty is voided as the rule said :

Free of charge on installation of parts needed to replace, price of parts is charge.(Wet damage"even if it waterproof", Drop damage is warranty void)"
You got warranty form sony. (1Year)
OPEN DAMN FLAPS and check there is white indicators. If it's still white it was NO WATER DAMAGE !!!
So take this garbadge to sony and say it's suddenly shut down.
This is it. Do not tell is water damage or something liker this. You woke up and saw your phone is died.

So True!!! have you checked the white indicators? I they are all white and they should replace your phone, if they are red-ish then you gotta argue with them and tell them to examine the phone because you didn't do anything wrong.

If they ask you something about "did u put the phone in water?" you can say I washed my phone 1 day before with water.. and all the flaps were closed.. (if you think it's damaged by water, open the flaps and check the white indicator.. Every flap contains a white indicator) If there is nothing wrong with that, it's damaged by something else.. - the micro SD and the micro USB flap are slightly red
- the headphones flap is totally red.
anyway. i bought this ONLINE, not from a sony store, The Store said it has a 3days replacement warranty and a 1 year service warranty.... is the one year service warranty is the Sony Warranty? or is different?

You should check the law about replacement, in Slovenia we said that "Law on Consumer Protection". We have unofficial 8 days replacement, btu by the law, we are protected for 2 months from the day we bought an article.

when i bought the phone it's really in its perfect condition so service warranty will remain but the fact that they said :
*Service warranty only includes :
Free of charge on installation of parts needed to replace, price of parts is charge.(Wet damage"even if it waterproof", Drop damage is warranty void)
it means i have to spend another bucks to repair it but as of now they said that the parts of this model is not yet available in my country.
regardless of the country, the COMPANY of SONY gives a 1 year warranty.
if you are unsure about philipines, send it to someone in a different country like japan or usa and they should send it in for warranty.
it isn't even available in the phils like you said, so why bother.
if the indicators are red, water MUST HAVE gotten to the inside, and this is very bad. maybe the flaps were not really secured tightly but only loosely. nobody knows how water got through 3 different flaps and sony may check the flaps.
if they are closed and no water comes through, then it's pretty obvious, that they were not closed "correctly" / pushed in very hard all the way down.
even if it's that much worth like a ball of gold in the phils, it "may be" your fault that it got damaged.
i don't know how that happened, but the indicators are there for a good reason.
if you had it with you in the pool, maybe water could have gotten from ONE loose flap to the others. but if you only had it get some drops of water on the front and back, that possibility should not be there.
so ask yourself once again how water could have gotten to all the indicators or did you open them with wet fingers to connect cables ?

I am very sure that the flaps (ALL FLAPS) of my XZ are secured tightly. I'm pretty sure too that before i open the flaps after several hour i dried it using a towel and pretty sure that my hands and fingers are dry before i charge it.
can you provide a link where i can message them and investigate my phone? i'm really missing my XZ right now

I'm from Philippines too and i have the same problem, but there are some differences. like , i let my friend use my phone to take picture under the pool, so he submerged my phone but not deep, like just 4 inches. then he returned it to me. and i set the timer then gave it to him again and he took picture, by the third time.. i was checking my phone the camera didnt work i exit, then touch the camera icon and it says "camera error", so 1st. i submerged my phone and you didnt
2nd i could still use it, the camera is the only problem. i listened to 3-4 songs then, i stopped and played minion rush. for like 3 runs, after 2hrs, i let my friend play my phone (take note my front and back camera also moistened) then it suddenly just turned off. not shutdown. just off, turned black..
3rd the moist on my main camera is still there
then i perform an inspection. i open each flaps, and there are no traces of water except in the flap cover of my memory card, i was shocked because i also made sure that the flaps are all closed before using it in the pool. i dont know how the water managed to enter the closed flap then i took my memory card out its not that wet but you can see very little water. then i brought immediately to nearest sony (just an FYI. i bought my phone in Sony store in SM Bacoor) then they said they have this white water indicator, if it turned red or pink means a water really entered the device. my indicators (for each flap) is all white (even the flap cover of my memory card) so they cant say what was really the problem, and they said. the moistening of the camera is natural.. then they charged my phone thinking that the battery was just drained but i said no, the battery was 65 when it happened, but after a 1-2 minutes of charge. my phone OPENED !! then i told them i just updated my software. you know the 4.3 jelly bean and they said the update might have something to do with what happened to my phone. so the water isnt only the responsible for my problem
and also my phone glitches while on lockscreen.. after it opened :'( im bringing my phone again in PASIG . SONY at megamall recommended me to take my phone to pasig branch. (i thought in MOA) so if you live nearby these places. you should bring it to PASIG branch. coz they said "only" pasig branch do the fixing thing

Warranty

I bought my C3z some weeks ago in second hands shop. It was a demo model, they explained. After a week the back cover detached from the frame on one of long sides of the devices, which is common issue, I believe. The shop contacted Sony, but they indicated that warranty is void since I carried the device in my pocket (!). Hence it moves and gets hot, which is detrimental for the glue... Anyone similar experiences? Fortunately the shop will glue the back cover instead (at no costs), but I am afraid I can say goodbye to the waterproofing .
if the phone gets hots from nothing then there is something wrong with it.
how is the battery? how old is the device really?
eg: if a unit has been constantly charging for a year, the battery is probably crap by now.
The battery is perfectly fine and the phone doesn't get really hot at all; the argument was that the phone warms up because of my body heat...

Your warranty has nothing to do with your body temperature or carrying your phone in your pocket. Where else are you supposed to carry your phone? They are designed for pockets. Sounds like the service center made up some bs to get the phone out the door.
The phone should have minimum one year (possibly two in EU) warranty, regardless of it being ex-demo or not.
Try phoning Sony service, talk to the helpdesk. They will give you an address of a reputable service centre to send it to for repair. Don't let the shop mess it up with some dodgy adhesive, the service centre will never repair it once it's full of superglue.

Thanks. I actually read the warranty regulations and it doesn't say anything about pockets (only in relation to pacemakers). I'll call Sony's service center and report back.
Sony indicated that they had repaired my Z3C, but I received a device with another IMEI, so I think they sent another. Lucky form me, since I unlocked the bootloader of my original device. They even included screen protectors! So hurray for Sony Service . Thanks again @Didgesteve for your advice.

Sending an opened phone back to Sony for repair...

My Z3 compact used to be waterproof and I used it several times under water, but it went back for a replacement button a while back and recently I dunked it to take a photo and within hours a dead strip appeared on the touch screen, and when plugging a jack into the headphone port results in the volume control fluctuating and music randomly pausing/starting etc.
There is a tiny, tiny chip on the rear screen which I assumed would mean Sony would reject any warranty claim, but having opened the phone, the chip was so tiny it was still outside/on the adhesive. Inside the phone there is no sign of water ingress, but for good measure its left open and sealed in a bag with large desiccant sachets for 72 hours, no improvement.
So, my dilemma is, if I reclose the phone with the replacement back cover I have from ReplaceBase, will Sony be any the wiser that its been cracked open?
(I could buy the LCD and digitiser for £70 but as the headphone port is a different component, I'm wary that this will not resolve the issues Also looking at 'spares or repair' phones on eBay, it seems plenty of them have replacement screens that have lifted or remain proud of the chassis...perhaps this is just lack of care during the replacement but its put me off...)

I think you could probably have got away with sending it back with the screen chipped, it's just wear and tear, the issue was the waterproof feature had failed.
Now you've opened it I think it seems unlikely that you'll get it into a service centre unnoticed, but you won't know until you try. The obvious thing to do would be to put a genuine Sony back cover on the phone rather than a clone. If the service centre spot it then the worst thing that will happen is that they'll ask you for some horrendous amount of money to fix it, to which you'll decline, then they'll send it back.
It will cost you the postage to find out.
Otherwise there's dozens of how to videos on youtube and support from the threads here
Edit: a genuine Sony screen is expensive, but it comes with the double sided gasket that sticks the screen in place. This is the important part of the kit that makes sure it won't lift out. Sometimes it's worth paying the extra for original parts.
Very late update, tried it, it got repaired free and back very quickly, they even refitted the aftermarket rear cover!!
Sony's may be fragile, but my experience for two returns is very positive! Lesson - don't bother trying to fix it yourself until Sony have taken a look!

Yes, would be helpful to know which country... as I am having a hard time with the UK repair people.
They received my phone on 16th Sept. Week later get notified its delayed due to awaiting part. And yet they keep saying the same story everytime I ask and that it is escalated to know why the delay. 5 days since escalation but their support yet gives the sad response of awaiting part.
It was the UK...in my case the fix was prompt. Got be honest, I'd be getting frustrated at that length of delay...
It went back in June so maybe things have changed
It finally left the repair centre on 10th Oct. Says screen and case replaced. Seems fine. KK or Marshmallow is the decision to make now
