The Nexus device program isn't going away - Nexus 5 General

From Android Central:
A continuing point of discussion, rumor, idle speculation, is the future of the Nexus device program. Android Silver is potentially on the horizon but according to Dave Burke, head of Android engineering and the Nexus program at Google, who was speaking to ReadWrite, that doesn't mean that Nexus devices will be killed off.
"People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make"

N1 is dead :(

My first thread was in the Desire section and we got on the topic of the Nexus One not being sold through Google anymore but now its dead all together There's an article on mashable dot com that tells how its all being halted.
http://www.mobilemag.com/2010/07/18/google-to-stop-selling-the-nexus-one/
It was widely heralded as the first real “Google Phone” and now it will soon be laid out to pasture. If you were hoping to get your hands on the Google Nexus One smartphone, I highly suggest you do it very soon, because Google has placed its final order with HTC for the device. After stock from this shipment is depleted Google will no longer be selling the Nexus One through its official online store. Nada. No more. Kaput. You have plenty of other options in the Android realm, like the HTC Droid Incredible, but the Nexus One holds a special place in cell phone history.
That’s the bad news, but there are two smaller tidbits of good news. First, Google will continue to offer support through its customer service lines. So, if you already have one of these devices in hand, you can still get help when you need it. Second, Google is looking for a way to continue selling the Nexus One through a sales partner, but these sales will be restricted to registered app developers.
I guess you go out and buy just about any other Google Android device offered through your carrier of choice, but those oftentimes contain some carrier-specific doo-dahs. The Nexus One is, as far as we can tell, the only true clean-slate and completely unlocked Android that you can get on a very official basis.

For f**k's sake, stop trolling the panic.
How many topics a day do we need about this?!
FOR THE LAST F*CKING TIME:
Nexus One's ONLY purpose and the SOLE reason for existence was to promote android and show what it can do on a good hardware. They planned to have Nexus 2 to continue pushing android. Since so many companies like HTC/Motorola/Samsung jumped on an Android band-wagon, Google officially stopped Nexus TWO development and slowing down (NOT STOPPED!!!!!!!) Nexus One sales.
As per Google's CEO own words, "NEXUS ONE WAS SO SUCCESSFULL, THAT WE DON'T NEED NEXUS TWO."
If your brain is so tiny that it can't understand that Nexus One was a huge success for what it was intended for, and that Google NEVER intended to make money on phones directly, then I beg you, please go hang out on iPhone forums where you'll find your kin.
Jesus holy Christ.

I sold my Nexus on Craigslist on Friday. Bought a Vibrant Thursday. After holding that phone for 1 second I knew I had to have it. Screen was downright AMAZING! I love what the Nexus gave me but this is the nature of technology and you can lament it or accept it.
They saying shouldn't be "if you've got nothinng nice to say, say nothing at all" it should be "if you're an idiot, stop talking".

DarkDvr may I have another?
Took the words right out of my mouth...
That's good news, if the phone won't be available discounted through carriers, it will remain rare!!!! A true gem!
As long as we're be able to run Gingerbread when it's released it would keep me happy for many more months
Actually you can still buy one, you just have to pay $25 for the developer channel i think.

Apple vs. Google

Sheesh! Google has a history that is completely obscure to the general public. Apple says Android's Rubin worked for them in the '90s. APIs are a product of Apple, according to what they are saying.
http://gizmodo.com/5837045/apple-claims-android-started-with-them
Possibly more smoke from Apple. Why bring this up now? Hopefully the judge is knowledgeable enough to sift thru what is real or not. Judge is a judge and not an engineer, so I doubt he's written code before. I myself don't know enough about APIs in question to comment this.

Another thing. The CEO of Google held a seat on Apple Board of Directors for a long time.
So, I drink Pepsi and Coke. Off brands sometimes too.
Lol whats next? They really want to shut android down

Apple seems really desperate at this point to try to put a road block on Androids success.

Apple is desperate. Their attempts to litigate Android products from the market are not working. So even if it probably really is just smoke and PR maneuvers with nothing substantial behind it, in their desperation Apple will do anything.

Nice try on stirring up the pot. WP7 is nothing, will never be anything. Look at how terrible it is doing in this market. Apple and Google will continue to claw it out in phone sales while Microsoft sits on the sidelines. None of the general public goes into a best buy or at&t looking for a WP7, nor will they walk out with one. They want a cool looking OS and phone and some variety to choose from. Not some bleak tiles invented by a first grade class.

Its obviously desperate times at Apple. Especially if there really is no iPhone 5. OR especially if there is a iPhone 5 but it looks like a GSII.
Apple must be really going down hill.

Remember Skynet? Google's eating the world, a little bit at a time.
I think Apple will burn out and fade away, because Android's main target is us: the open-sourced, geeky, "I NEED TO MODIFY AND LIBERATE MY SMARTPHONE" community. Now, dish that out versus the aesthetically perfect society over at Apple. Yes, they have a lot of apps. So do we. I can see it on the breaking news:
"Google buys Apple's R&D mobile department"
"WhatsApp, Inc. starts negotiations with search giant Google"
"Nokia is taken aboard by Google"
When that happens, (without going off-topic and trying to prove my point), Google will dominate and Android will be everything we'll see.
But, anything might happen, who I am to know?
PS: Ironically, Android's builds are named after desserts.

Now that would be sweet! A fantastic thing, for sure. The goodness of Android mixed with the superior hardware and build quality of Apple.
Even more than that, let Apple adopt Android and finesse and smooth it out to their higher standards. What an overwhelming affair.
Sorry, but what superior hardware and quality? Don't drink the kool aid.

Google bought Motorola mainly for the patents and not fot their plants. Google doesn`t want to be a (indirect) phone manufacterer. Thats why they made a deal with Samsung so that they can use and profit from each others patents. I think and hope that the Nexus line will continue to show what the software should look like.
This quote from Page is somewhat ambiguous
As a side note, this does not signal a larger shift for our other hardware efforts

But that being said, I don't think this has anything to do with the LG manufactured Nexus 5

Actually it is important. A lot of people here believed the 6 was too big. A lot of people believed that the 5 was perfect. A lot of people had discussed the possibility that Google would keep the 5 and the 6 and upgrade the hardware of each device yearly or so. If google has indeed stopped production of the 5 that could mean they are gearing up for a new 5. Or they are killing the device to be replaced by something else entirely. Notice how I used the term "a lot" quite often? So while your entitled to your opinion it doesn't mean the rest of us aren't interested in what this could mean. Since you've already decided to report this thread Id be interested to see that the Mods take on it is.

My warranty card says it's 2 years.
Given the pace of change it's not surprising that the nexus 5 is reaching end of life. In terms of market reach the model had reached saturation. Those who want it have it already. Phones sell because they are an upgrade,to profit companies must keep moving. What does it mean for existing nexus 5 owners. Not much. We are likely to see incremental software updates for the next couple of years. We may or not get big future updates but nexus devices tend to be supported longer. A lot of Nexus 5s have been sold, we have a strong development community that will continue for the next couple of years. All this is normal, expected. Over the next few years the majority of the community will buy new phones, many in less than 12 months. Not a shock.
The N5 will still be available through other sellers like ebay, amazon, etc..... for a good long while. You can still buy any nexus phone from the past brand new.
Sorry people this is not new information.

Google Android One Program Important News

For those that are not yet informed, this is an important article as to how Google will proceed with the Android One program.
Android One 2nd Gen may be the last of it's kind in terms of a unified, inexpensive Android platform with top to bottom hardware and software standards.

WSJ article, which is the source of the arstechnica oped, is paywalled. So I don't know for sure whether this is just a special exception made by Google for one particular market.

Yeah, I sure hope that's true but, ARS Technica is usually dependable on their reporting and the chances of them omitting that detail's unlikely. Emerging and small economy OEMs are notorious for for pushing crap stock firmware and even worse security/update policies if any.
I hope google keeps pushing all OEMs to comply to a standard when it comes to security and updating instead of opting in. They've started implementing stricter policies regarding MM in that regard and I hope they keep following through in that direction. It's not like OEMs really have a choice if Google decided to implement higher standards.
