I have an unrooted Galaxy S5. A few days ago, I was using the phone (can't remember an app) when the phone froze completely for about 5 seconds and then restarted. Ever since it recovered, the phone has had all sorts of problems: app crashes (Chrome in particular), dropped calls, very slow performance, and very slow gallery and camera. I haven't installed any apps recently.
Does anyone know what would cause this? Am I correct in assuming that the only way to fix this is a factory reset?

I'm no expert, but usually a full factory reset helps Try wiping cache from recovery too, that could help. If all else fails then there's nothing (except a hard paperweight) that a reset can't fix

It's strange that so many unrelated things would stop working but they all sound software/OS related so the wipe will probably fix it. You could clear app data for a few separate apps & see if one is the culprit but it might be a deeper problem like play services or something.

I'll admit to some f.c. on apps but nothing to do with the system crashing. Maybe try a fresh flash through Odin and a factory reset before fullboot. Also towel rooted. And how bad does this locked bootloader suck.

Hey,
Ever since the OTA update my phone reboots randomly about once every two days [I'm on Verizon].
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Screen just goes black, vibrates once quickly, then its back on that LG G2/Verizon screen and then boots. Then everything is fine.

Nope... Have you done a FDR yet? It is highly recommended to do one after taking this OTA if you have ANY kind of trouble at all.

Yes, FDR = Factory Data Reset, basically a factory default, not reflashing the original factory images.

It's a fairly common occurrence for people on custom builds. I've noticed it when trying to do too many things at once.
There also apparently appears to be a link between SwiftKey and this problem from what I've read, or maybe that's an entirely different problem.
Mine have stopped after I disabled Google Services Sound Search.

I just rooted my phone about a week ago, I'm still on the 4.4.2 KK ROM and have Swiftkey and Google Services enabled. I also am using the Complete Keyguard Disabler.
A few things I've noticed are:
1)Random reboots/Phone overheating
2)Sluggish/unresponsive phone performance coming out of 'sleep' using double tap
3)Speaker/headphone Viper4 mod not working properly
Is a factory reset something I should consider if I didn't root the device until after the 4.4.2 update or is there something else causing these issues? I'm sure there is some user error in #3 as I'm going through the learning curve, but the most concerning is by far the #1 and 2, as I rooted it for the main purpose of increasing performance speed.
Any insights?

I haven't looked at any logs or anything on a remotely technical level. I noticed the google sound search was eating battery so I disabled it. Reboots are gone.

First and foremost, I was not rooted or using anything customer. I never tried rooting this phone because I figured there would be updates in the near future (I was optimistic).
I am also receiving:
Random Reboots
Overheating
Random Apps Crash frequently (Kindle, Search, Home, etc)
I am also using swiftkey.

I believe there are known issues with the G2 and Swiftkey on stock roms (rooted, custom, or otherwise).
What language are you using on Swiftkey. I'm on Swiftkey and Carbon and I'm not having any problems.

I'm also on Swiftkey and am experiencing very similar issues, using English as well.
On a side note, I also work in a building that has no cell service and continuously cycles through wifi connections because the 3 networks I have entered vary greatly in strength based on a 10 ft radius of where I walk.. could this be a cause as well and is there a way to stop it from happening?
I've tried removing all of the connections except 1 wifi signal but then I'm really only connected when I'm at my desk and if I standup to walk somewhere it's disconnected...

Has anyone experienced this bug with camera, I can't even start it up, it has started crashing 2 weeks ago while I was on ViperOne rom, now i have flashed cm11 and still the same, I just can't start it up, tried with force stopping the app, clearing cache/data and nothing
edit: if anyone encounters that sometimes camera is working and sometimes not, you just need to hit the phone around camera
It seems that when my phone has fallen from the table flex cable from camera has been losing contact and that was the issue..

Hello and Happy Turkeyday to all. I have an issue with my wife's note. When she gets any notifications they turn the screen on and it doesn't turn off. I feel pretty knowledgeable about the android O.S. in a whole, I have my S5 rooted and running AICP. I just can't figure out why the notifications cause the screen to stay on. Has anyone else had this problem maybe you could help shed some light on my issue. Thanks in advance.

Same problem
I have the exact same problem on my Note 4 (N910F).
My phone is rooted and I have had the problem from the start.
I am also running a custom kernel now but the problem persists.
Any ideas on why this is happening anyone? I've got it to not turn the screen on for a notification but now it won't turn off when plugged in.
Turn off the lock screen notifications, or everything you can on the lock screen settings, most likely something is causing the screen to wake lock. My bet is the weather widget.

So a little update, so far, my problem seems to be fixed.
After the app told me that Dsploit was causing a lot of screen-on time, I disabled the app.
Haven't had it happen so far today so I hope this helps you too.

Can anyone else have other fix? I have new note 4 with rom stock and very few apps (5-8 apps)
the "Wakelock Detector-Save Battery" app requird root this not my phone so I can't root for now.
If you have very few apps installed, uninstall those apps one by one to see which one is potentially keeping the screen on. Otherwise, do a factory reset, clear cache; also ensure power button is sticky and is fully functional.

Anyone else suffering random reboots? I have got my Note 8 N950F for a few days now and sadly have to notice that I see random reboots from time to time. Sometimes I saw the Samsung boot logo, sometimes i noticed it because I hat to enter my PIN after reboot. For now it seems to happen once or twice a day. Quite annoying.

Rogue app?
Sounds like something installed is not agreeing with your device. Usually thins can get tangled up when you do a restore from an old back up for example.
Did you have an older model note device that you restored form perhaps?
I'm using a T-Mobile variant ands no such issues.
As an aside, there is an option in the phone (you may already know this) that will restart the phone at a setting you setup.
Maybe also try clearing cache on your device?
Did you disable a lot of stuff with a package disabler?
A couple of mornings now I've woken and my phone asks for a password because it restarted overnight. I haven't experienced a crash or reboot yet, but something seems to be happening overnight.

Do you have Substratum installed? I installed Swift Dark and noticed what I call mini reboot, phone would lock up for a second and just the carrier label came on and everything was fine again. Was using the S8 for my Substratum setting and I guess the Note 8 isn't compatible yet. Uninstalled most of the layers and haven't had a reboot since.

Ive seen people that posted having random reboots being that they transferred a backup to the new device.
There's something to be said in a fresh manual install into a new machine with new guts and firmware/builds....
My Note 8 just randomly rebooted itself this morning for the first time. I have had my phone since September 7th. After the reboot it has been fine but shortly before it rebooted it quit functioning altogether. I think I will go in and clear the cache when I get to work.

Its a system wide ad-blocking app that does not require root
My note 8 n950u1 has rebooted multiple times, but not in one day. It has restarted for the third time (ever) this morning. The first time was Gmail, second was Facebook, and this third time was Gmail again. My best guess is it might be a ram glitch because it seemed to happen when the app was trying to do a lot. Now, I have no idea if this is true, but it is my best guess. At first I thought it might be because of the snapdragon but seeing how others on an f varient with the exynos chips are rebooting too, that theory is shut down.
Could be apps like others pointed out. 2nd option the battery? But due to how new this phone is, I doubt that. In my past phones it was old bad batteries.
Not a single random reboot since day one, I got my note 8 on 22 Nov 2017, I dont use substratum or adhell, but I installed bk disabler and blocked all bixby, microsoft, google music, video, books, all carrier trash, almost all samsung stuff in "bloatware section", also disabled many services in a lot of apps, I am running naptime, greenify and hibernator, so far, all working fine
SM-N950F here same problem.
Mine ended up random rebooting four times from Sept 7 through about Feb 1. Then about two weeks ago, it completely froze, then decided the port was wet and wouldnt charge at all (port wasn't wet). tried a few things, then did a factory reset, where it actually rebooted probably 20-22 times (well, during the reboot process, the black screen with Samsung flashed probably 20 times).
Needless to say, I talked with Samsung and then TMobile. Got a replacement and it's been great since.
Can't believe it's now been over 5 months since I first got my Note 8. Even counting the replacement, I still LOVE this phone.

Thanks for the update, please keep us up to date even if you continue to have no problems under Oreo. BTW, I have the exact same problem (using N9500 dual SIM with Samsung processor as opposed to Qualcomm) as you but do not have Oreo available yet. I'm getting the restart message every few days and its always after the phone has been idle, usually overnight. Its asking for a PIN due to restart as I use face recognition. Also I transferred over data from a Note 3. Want to ask you, did you try to wipe the phone completely as a solution to the restart problem (before Oreo became available)?
Thanks so much in advance!
I am still waiting for oreo OTA, but after almost 5 months, I have not had a single random reboot or freezing, even though I have a bunch of stuff disabled
I noticed a bug in the YouTube app on my device (note 8 SM-N950F).
while a video is playing if I minimized the movie and then maximized it (quickly few times in a row) the phone crash to boot.
I didn't face any kind of crash in the month I have it except this scenario in the youtube app .

as you can see :

I manage to find more info by trying diffrent things. I think maybe it's memory management bug. If the device is fresh from boot with nothing else running then it won't crash. But with some apps open in the background then it always happens. not randomly at all.
Did you solved it?

It happens so rarely that I haven't really done anything about it. It will happen out of the blue one day and won't show up for weeks. I have gone on the Samsung Members app and it detected an unexpected reboot which it reported to Samsung so maybe they will fix it eventually.
Same thing for me. Happened already 3 times. While resizing the window or passing from portrait to landscape.

I've checked now and it won't crash. I don't know if it's related but Yesterday I've installed the latest OTA update (which was the first since I've got my unit). Any way it's seems fixed as far as i can see. Didn't do anything except updating all my apps and the unit itself to the latest version available. If it will happen again I'll keep you update.
