Rom differences? - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone explain the specific differences between the various ROMS for LBL please. I'm looking at Paranoid, CM11, neXus CM and Slimkat, and am interested in the differences between them. I don't want to know which is "best".. I understand that a rom is like tea or coffee.. A matter of personal preference; I'm more interested in the specifics.
Cheers!

Please try them out as different users have different opinions

I have used SlimKAT and Paranoid Nexus. The main differences I felt were that Slim had some Slim related features like it had CRT screen off effect, options to use pie controls (even not in immersive mode). Its pie controls were very nice. And Paranoid had its own charms for example it has Android 4.4.4 while SlimKAT has 4.2.2. Also that Slim had some shake controls - pretty nice they were.

Also that Paranoid has pretty responsive pie controls though they only appear in immsersive mode. Paranoid has active development community. It has OTA. It's being built and updated on daily basis.

And is ota working for XSP?

I think its a valid and different question than most people ask here.
All these ROMs have slightly different FRAMEWORKS. Thats it. No other magic. Just that.
MIUI, Chameloen, Touchwiz, Sense, LG, they all have different, very unique frameworks. But these ROMs generally have 20-30% differences in framework and rest is google based.
If u need further detailed info, PM me.
Maybe a couple of different apps, but all apps pretty much run on all these. Unless a specific closed source app.

Any big name ROMs for this phone yet?

I'm looking but I can't seem to find any working big name roms like Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Paranoid Andoid, or Slimbean ROMs for the AT&T s5.
Am I missing them or are they truly unavailable?
Have you been in a cave...LOL...Just Kidding. Welcome to the new At&t Samsung way. LOCKED BOOTLOADER
FOREVER.
Unless we some how get a Loki workaround, we will never have custom kernels.
Big Name ROM? Lets give credit to the devs we do have - giving their time for our device and only TouchWiz.
Damn...I just found out about towelroot and I was so excited about finally being able to wipe my phone clean with a cool big new rom. No offence to the little devs, but it's just not the same, ya know?

Give visix a try...May not be a big name as you put it, but the devs are very active, already on version 3.0. Very smooth, good battery life, I personally like it very much.

I'm thankful for the devs who are giving their time, but I look for roms with the features I want and need, not by who the developer is. Let's help these guys become "big devs" by supporting their work.
My point is, all of the ROMs available look and function pretty much exactly like stock except they have bugs. Big name ROMs have tons of features and few bugs as well as completely changing up the stock experience. It's a shame, but I'm just going to go back to stock because all of the ROMs out now are (to me) no different than stock and filled with bugs.

Not true, Vision is stock all the way, I just changed the stock look a little, everything works PERFECT. I agree, you start modding the phone with a bunch of non-needed mods that btw, xposed can handle, it tends to have issues. This exactly why I built Vision, for this purpose.
Give it a try. You will not be disappointed.:good:

I don't understand how one can say CM or any AOSP or AOKP Rom are bug free if that was the case then why nightlies? I've flashed MANY AOSP Roms on my S2 S3 and S 4 and never found one "bug free". Now development is just beginning for the AT&T S5 and whether there's a loki exploit or something like it remains to be seen, however, there will be and already are themers and modders working to give us choices.
I prefer T/W for the stability and and really "bug free" experience. Hence no need for nightlies.

I'm curious, what exactly is a "Big Name" ROM? I have been Devin for a long time AOSP, AOKP, CM, SENSE, and currently TouchWiz (which by the way is actually very stable model or not). There isn't even a stock oob firmware without bugs if there was there would be no updates or patches from oem.
I appreciate your wanting a highly themed ROM however, during early stages most devs look to take care of opening things up and enabling what was removed or disabled. Personally I leave the heavy modding and style changes to the themers.

Need a rom suggestion..

I'm getting the N6 tomorrow and it'll be my first rom device in over a year. I'm looking for a rom that's fast, smooth and stable. Features and customizations aren't important as performance and battery.
What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Obviously what your suggestions here are going to be biased towards the particular user's experiences.
It's like coming to this forum and asking need a phone suggestion, everybody will suggest a Nexus 6 because it will be biased. My recommendations would be look at all of them (or the ones that interest you) and give it a try.
That's my most unbiased answer. If you're looking for a biased answer then it'd be Chroma because it's a ROM maintained by me and I'm quite passionate about maintaining and providing updates with the newest and latest things that I personally find useful.

There's is nothing wrong with recommending your own product. The fact that you took the time to post your opinion is awesome. I know asking people's opinion on roms can be kind of tricky, But It's nice to hear peoples mini review and opinion even if it's, Because they use the Rom.
Question, Do you have a video or tutorial on your Rom, I'm going to run with it, But would like to know more about it and it's features. Thanks!

Certainly there is nothing wrong with it but it feels dirty to lead someone onto another person's benefit. I respect honesty and am a honest person by heart. I try my best to give the most unbiased answer to others.
And absolutely, there are two video/reviews of the ROM although they are on older builds of the ROM. You can see a newer updated feature list on the changelog https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c7wNrT0khaipv-M0Z35OPQ8sxPHO-e9-Rk945fo4iJE/edit compared to the date of the video/reading.

@J.Guido85 Your ROM choice will come down to your preference. Do you want a minimalistic or feature packed ROM? Chroma will in fact give you the most features along with some of the best performance/battery life available. Rastapop will offer you a very light feature set as it is a very minimal but stable ROM.
If you're in fact looking for a ROM that will give you the best features & performance on the N6, Chroma is definitely among the top N6 ROM's in terms of great support, features, stability, and battery life. I've been personally using Chroma has my daily driver ever since flashing it well over a month ago, it continues to impress with every update.
I have a YouTube channel with a lot of Nexus 6 ROM overviews you can check out if you want here. I update weekly.

You do realise that performance and battery are opposite ends of the same scale? And that bias towards one is bias away from the other? Also that every kernel can be tweaked to bias towards either as much as you want?
Basically I'm saying they're all the same if you know what you're doing. Choose based on features then tweak to performance OR battery

[Q] What are great roms for original features?

I would like to know what the favorite roms are for original features. When I say original features, I mean features that aren't particularly prevalent on most roms. A lot of roms offer roughly the same feature set in regards to customization (and there's nothing wrong with that), but is there a particular rom that stands out to you that offers original features or optimization that you just can't find on other roms. I've always been a fan of paranoid android but they've been slightly MIA of late. My apologies if this thread already exists, I did a search beforehand to no avail. Just looking for opinions! Thanks!
You're asking conflicting questions. Slim ROMs are by far the most original, coming up with stuff specifically that other developers aren't but then their ideas are so good, they end up in most other ROMs anyway so yeah, where as slim are IMHO the most original, they're never different for long - and nor is any other ROM

Fair point! I suppose I wasn't wording that quite right. I guess I was asking more what you answered. Where do the ideas and features originate, and what roms are more than just Kangs? Thanks for your reply!

all other ROMs are just kangs, to various degrees(even these ROMs are partially kangs).

Best ROM?

What do you think that is the best rom now ? I 'm doubting and do not know which to install
You will get as many opinions as there are xda users.
Personally I like SlimLP. My #2 would be CM12.1. Bonus, the devs are great for both.
What's the best ice cream, what's the best beer, what's the best city, what's the best tv show?
Doubt many have tried the latest versions of all three options and even if they have, their needs and wants from it may well be different to yours.
Only you can see which is the best rom for you, try them, it's not like you have to pay for them.

I Agree with "pond-life" in that is is all a personal preference thing. I own 3 of theses tablets and have tried all 3 roms but am running RR on them now because I do not like layers and RR has more custom options than CM. Again , all three ROMs are rock solid ROMs and it is just a matter of what your likes and personal preferences are.

All ROMs a different, just try them, otherwise you will never know...
I will add, for a non-tech person, makes no difference. I have two tables, mine with SlimLP and the Mrs' with CM12.1.
The Mrs uses both with no difference whatsoever since her apps are on the main screen on both and she could careless about all the customization and tech details

Cyanogenmod replacement

Man, so bummed CM is dead. It was IMO the best blend of stability and fully featured as far as Roms went.
So, any opinions on the best new ROM to go with? Stability is greatly desired over features for me.
Thanks!

I'm confused why you don't just jump to Lineage then. ?? For me, the very first and only ROM that ever shoots to my head as far as rock solid every time, is Pure Nexus. Everyone is different and everyone's phones are different. Best answer really is to try them all and see what you like.
LineageOS just seems so new, I know it's CM original dev, but CM had so much other support later in it's life pre CM, Inc split. Plus just haven't heard that much about Lineage relative to CM's years of cred. I'll try both, thanks!
I've really enjoyed Pure nexus for ages until switching to Nitro ROM. That dev updates his ROM on a weekly basis and is excellent with communication with forum users. Love nitro ROM. I get anywhere from 24-36 hours battery. I typically have at the least 50% battery at the end of my day, if not more then that

Nope. Resurrection uses DUI for the Navy bar I think. I personally can't stand it. I like to use the stock nav bar tuner built into Nougat so that I can shift my keys over. With a big device like this, I find it crucial when I drop my dpi

If you are going on their rep then im surprised you want to use them. Their rep is known for bugs that have been around for years and never fixed/ Things like random bootloops, BT and WIFI issues and of course dont forget the random reboot feature. This is part of the reason most of the other teams will no longer use any of CM code in their roms.
Ill be honest. CM is the rom that mostly noobs use.

That is Dirty Unicorns smart bar. It is the standard nav bar that has customizations that you will find roms using. Almost none are using the stock nav bar editor.

Yeah that's what I'd mentioned earlier. That's why there are very few ROM's that I have to chose from
LineageOS. Their root zip doesn't work for me, so I just flash Magisk over LOS and Gapps and activate their Superuser through Magisk Manager.
