I prefer,

There's not one setting that's going to work from one device to another. The panels are just too inconsistent in terms of their color reproduction, and this is no knock on JDI or the OPO, because ALL devices suffer from this in the real world. It's just a fact that there's no 100% reliable way to make the same levels come out of two different panels to the point where the same settings will produce the same effect. That's why professional calibration of displays isn't just based on plugging in some numbers and bam!
To do it right takes time to measure each display, and adjust all the peramiters for the individual characteristics of the panel. There is no one size fits all setting.

Trial and error is the only way (outside of professional calibration) to find what works. I just wanted to warn people not to blindly trust the settings, or to think that they'll work for them, because they don't work from unit to unit.

Not on LCD panels, this app adds a gray tint to the colors, your back light is still on at whatever level the "brightness" setting is on the phone.
EDIT: I got to the thread from the XDA-portal and just realized this is a AMOLED phone thread, as posted below, on AMOLED screens, darker screen means less power consumption from the display. Not sure what the app itself would use, tho. As in CPU processing.
It should give more battery life with our SAMOLED screens because each pixel glows to give brightness/color, so if it's darker then it should be using less energy. It's not like LCD where you're pumping backlight through the display.
Anybody know how to integrate this into Tasker?
Eg: IF brightness=10 THEN Open App Screen Filter ELSE Close App Screen Filter
I'm looking into it, but wondered if anyone has already done it to save me a bit of time
This app has been around on the market for a fairly long time actually.
I discovered it when I typed "dimmer" in the market search, and found this.

As you can see, this lucky guy managed to get and use the Nexus already. Discuss!
Probably a store manager who demo'ed it to some employees. There are additional apps, which shows at least a decent amount of time with the device. Perhaps someone carrying it around as a teaching tool?
I'm hoping it's there already though. I can't imagine it would be too difficult to go there (Heerhugowaard) and snoop around with some of the more knowledgeable-looking employees.

Check out this table and see for yourself. It's definitely not capable of showing true black, but that was to be expected. The Nex4 does indeed sport the same screen as the [scratch Gnex, stupid me] Optimus G.
Edit: ^
Remember though, LCD screens will be blacker in light areas, but in a dark room it will show that off black we see, more like grey.
On the second photo, there's a folder named 'LG' on the homescreen. That's not bloatware is it??

Indeed. The colors return to normal indoors, though. I have no idea how HTC didn't spot this problem.

No, mine literally has a problem. I can't take a picture of it right now cause it's not doing it, but it flickered and became washed out. The reds would be orange, orange would be yellowish, and yellow would be nearly white.
This happens to all my Ones in the sun. Not indoors. Brightness doesn't matter, colors get washed out in the sun.
Wonder how none of the reviewers noticed that.

Happens to mine too. It gets really brighter i guess or the colors. (not really sure how to describe it).
A temporary fix I found:
As soon as you unlock and it happens, place your thumb over the sensors (the two dots on the top left next to your speaker) and it should automatically adjust back. :good:
Mine does this in the sun also. Becomes super bright then settles back down.

Hopefully some way can be found to stop the screen from going to that "maximum brightness" level. I've used the method mentioned earlier of covering the brightness sensor but that's a temporary fix...

Yeah, that's when the screen goes into super turbo boost mode lol.
When Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy Note 4 reaches an impressive 750 cd/m2 in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed – it is the brightest mobile display that we have ever tested. As a result of its high Brightness and low Reflectance, the Galaxy Note 4 has a Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light that ranges from 100 to156, the highest that we have ever measured for any mobile display.

Super Dimming Mode
The Galaxy Note 4 also has a Super Dimming Mode that allows the Maximum Screen Brightness to be set all the way down to just 2 cd/m2 (nits) using the Brightness Slider. This is useful for working comfortably without eye strain or bothering others in very dark environments, or affecting the eye’s dark adaptation, such as when using a telescope. The display still delivers full 24-bit color and the picture quality remains excellent.

Happened to me today, but everything was still legible....looks crazy at first....thought my screen was talking a s***. But yes it is a feature that needs some tweaking, but apparently as long as auto brightness is Not selected it won't switch like that in bright sunlight. Looks kinda like a negative polarization effect with a bright wash.
And are ya switching phones or swapping for another note....because the "issue" will be on any note 4

Isn't that setting for auto brightness? I want it to adjust brightness from light to dark rooms. But I don't want super nuclear mode in the sunlight. Looks terrible. Was trying to shoot pictures the other day with the sun at my back and I wasn't sure if it was the camera acting up or the screen. Only after I took the pictures and reviewed them later (indoors) did I realize they were ok. They need to fix this.
I love this feature. If you hover your finger over anything it puts a shadow over it. Pretty tight imo
Im not the biggest fan of this, it makes everything look really weird, especially when your trying to film something or take a photo as its hard to see what its actually going to look like. But i guess it does make the screen more visible. FYI disabling auto adjust screen tone makes no difference

Yes that dose look odd. If you have a screen protector on it could possibly be that but you will have to lift it to check. Or it could be the oleophobic coating on the screen wearing away. If it's that contact Samsung.

No screen protector. And definitely not the coating. It's image processing. Like I said, it disappears when I switch to FHD+ resolution. When I swipe up to open the lock screen or even the app drawer I can see frames shifting. I haven't tried all colors but it's remarkably noticeable on dark grey shades all the way to pitch black wallpapers (including Samsung default ones). I contacted Samsung and they are yet to reply.

Nope. My device is not even rooted. It's as straightforward as it gets. Trying different wallpapers and all of a sudden I was stunned when I saw this on the lock screen.

OP should tell what he's using to test and show his issues.
