Still worth getting a Moto X? - Moto X Q&A

I'm looking to replace a broken N5.
I'm thinking black Front/red Rear with black buttons or all black with silver buttons, but i'd like to know if the X+1 is supposed to be larger or not. If so then I'll definitely get the X as I'm not a fan of phones over 5in.
Also is there a thread of peoples Signatures they had put on it? I'd like ideas.

No one know for sure, but the rumor is that the X+1 will be larger. That is still to be determined though. The current X is an excellent size though, and the red back with black buttons sounds pretty slick.
As for your second question, I don't know if there is a thread specifically for signatures (I haven't seen one), but there is one to show off the custom MotoMaker designs located in the General thread (here's the link, it was on the second page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/custom-motomaker-moto-xs-t2539033) and people generally post pictures that include their signatures.

This isn't a hundred percent of course but says possibly a 5.2" screen. I just ordered my x a couple days ago can't wait

I also have a M8 and i switch back and forth all the time. I like how fast my moto x is and the size.

I'm on the fence as well I got rid of my moto X for the LG g3. And I miss my X but I do not.know if I should pull the trigger or wait for the X1

Those with the white Moto X

I have been debating this phone for a while already. To replace my Gnex.
What first drew me was the customization aspect. I wanted to get a Black front & White back (like my old Droid Incredible).
However as with my Inc the white back after a while got dirty quick.
You guys with the White X, have you had any problems with that?
I might just go all black since the b&w combination was my only incentive to wait for a custom one.
Thank you guys.
I've heard numerous reports of the white getting dirty quickly.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
White matte rubbery surface getting dirty quickly? NO FRIGGIN WAY!!!
How is this a surprise to anyone? All you have to do is read one review, which will state the back is rubbery/matte
Due to the way they built the phone you can see dirt where the front and back are put together but a case would fix that
Thank you guys, now i'm 95% on getting it now. All black everything! 5% is on the HTC One, but i feel like i would have to really baby the phone compared to the X that i can just throw around (figuratively speaking of course)
You should try a white front. It looks really nice.

The white front never really appealed to me. Specially on the X. The black on screen buttons just didn't work out for me. If they had a Google Now look, if they were white or theme how Keylime is supposed to be an overhaul that looks like Google now and how it's unifying everything. then maybe a white phone... I'm so picky... -___-

Man, if they do that I'll be so sad. The current version of Android + AMOLED + black front = a beautiful thing

Build Quality

I was just wondering if it is just my phone. I got the developers edition VZW and when I push on the logo in the back of the phone (back/bottom of the phone) I get a tape sound when I release. Like they forgot to put padding or something in the back.
Is this normal?
I was going to go to the VZ store and see if they have the issue.
Same!
I have the regular vzw moto x and it does the same thing! I thought mine was defective or something. Weird...
I have had three Moto Maker AT&T models and none have had this issue. They have had other issues, including faulty haptic feedback, WiFi antenna, and varying degrees of smoothness at the edges (the wraparound glass or whatever they called it) and on the flash (one phone was completely smooth at the edges and at the flash on the back, another has a more pronounced lip).

also moving onto my third moto x. 2 gsm dev editions, and now i'm just going on to a used at&t model. for me:
1st gsm dev: marks on the screen in low light
2nd gsm dev: dirt embedded in the white backing, rattley/loose vibrations, creaky back
i figure, as long as i'm compromising and not getting a perfect device, might as well save $300 and get a used one where my expectations aren't so high. i just hope i get one with tight vibrations. i wish moto would get their crap together, this is such a beautiful phone.
Wait.. so I'm really interested in getting a moto x but it sounds like there are a lot of problems with the build quality.. Is this only with the phones that are manufactured in the US?

there are a lot of issues on every new phone released. but there seems to be a good bit from the usa factory. if you are in the states... a motomaker phone is your best bet as far as quality goes. my first one was perfect. but dropped it on day four and busted the glass. so they gave me a new one. this one seems to have a weak vibrator. but that is something i can easily live with. as im not a fan of haptic. but i have yet to turn it off because i dont need the battery savings.
Well, I just tried and mine does it too. I never hold the phone in such a way that I'm actually touching that area so not really an issue for me. It does sound like tape, though.

while i have no plans of testinf it out...there were leaked pics just before the release that show the x in layers. those pics show that there is some empty space as the back curves up at the camera all the way to the top. there is a lip at the top of the camera to keep the back from flexing in. id imagine that is why you can press down in the first place. just fyi.
OK. So it is normal. From the answers here and going to the Verizon store. They must have a piece of tape for the entire back and a gap at the bottom of the phone. Causing the issue. I am not going to try to do an RMA because it seems to be a design issue.
Aside from this issue, this has been by far my favorite android phone.

makes sense and agree. i didnt look at ifixit, so i didnt want to say there was tape. but i know the og droid razr had a back that was taped to the battery. and then the battery was connected by a ribbon. of which i ripped and ruined when taking it apart. so be careful if you ever decide to diy. it helps with twist/flex. so i would have to assume they did the same thing on the x. and it sounds like the tape is a bit bigger than it needs to be. no doubt because the usa plant isnt as good at building phones so they made it easier on the employees. which is why peeps are able to push in and hear a tape sound. it sounds like if it were an eighth inch shorter... this would be a non issue.
and i also agree with you that its not worth worrying about. the bad assedness of the phone makes up for the design flaw.

Which version to get, I mean which colour?

I sold my S4 last week to buy a M8 or S5, but some reviews on YouTube has sold me to Moto X. Yes I know it sounds crazy but I just need a simple phone with more fluidity than nonsense and bloated features.
Anyway, what I wanted to ask is, which colour should I get? I mean I have heard that the different back plate colours are not only colours, but different colours provide different feel, grip and durability. I want the one which should have the most grip, best durability. So which one should I get?
In India (cause I am here), only five colours are officially available, black, white, red, wood, and royal blue.
Thanks in advance.

All of the colored backs feel the same. They have the exact same soft-touch feel to them. The woven black and white backs have a little bit of a different feel, less grippy almost, but barely. For the wood backs, someone else will have to weigh in because I never owned a wooden back X, but I have heard that they are less grippy. As for durability they should all be able to take the same beating, however, in Pocketnow's durability report Michael Fisher said that the wood was slightly more durable than the colored and woven backs. Ultimately you should pick the color and material that you like the look of most. Any differences in the durability and grip are miniscule. Have fun and welcome!!
TL;DR The grip and durability are about the same, with very slight differences. Get the color you like the look of most and would be happy owning.

Get the developer edition model or the T-Mobile model. The always listening/active display/active assist has been very useful and the twist camera also.
MOTO X
Moto maker has a description of each color, but in general the darker colors are softer. They are described as matte finish or smooth finish (which has less grip) if I've remembered correctly.

Correct me if I'm wrong.....but as neat as the motomakers are, and assuming they come with 4.4.2.....you will never have root. As it stands today.
Something you may want to consider.

From his post, it doesn't seem as if he wants root, just the near-stock experience that the Moto X offers, but maybe I'm wrong.
And you are right, all of the MotoMaker phones come with 4.4.2 now, so no root for them. I kinda got screwed when I made the mistake of getting my X replaced and it came with 4.4.2, so now I have to wait for whomever decides to pick up the task of rooting/bootloader unlocking :fingers-crossed:

No they aren't the same. I have the Red back and it's not soft-touch at all. In fact, the Motomaker site tells you what feel you get with the colours you choose (soft-touch or smooth finish).

The phone doesn't really need root. Yeah, you miss out on a few apps and customization with gravity box....but there's little development, and stock is really nice.

You are making a good choice. I bought an S4 on sale as a gift and used it a bit myself, even with KitKat it is very slow, and all the features are gimmicks. The Moto X software features are all very useful.
I have both the non-slip and wood version. Personally, I think you should go with non-slip material. I think Royal Blue would be a very nice color. The wood backs are good to show off, but I don't think worth the extra cost, it also doesn't have that really smooth and comfortable feel of the nonslip material, which is much more comfortable to hold.
Well no root is a deal breaker for me to be honest. I mean how could I use apps like AdAway, Titanium, even the 8 step flashlight I use needs root, Adjustable torch i.e. Can't believe it doesn't have root.
Can't find any compact phones for human beings either, maybe Z1C is the only option left! Wish someone could turn me into a Dinosaur.

Get the Dev edition.... Or any model that can be unlocked.... As long as the radio bands work on your network.
Obviously you'd need to be able to sim unlock too.... so not a sprint model.
I am sorry what? I am in India, and here there are no locked phones! All phones are unlocked to work on any GSM network. This is the link from where I was gonna buy, if it matters in anything,

Diagonal lines on screen

I just bought a Moto G 2014 and I'm noticing diagonal lines across the screen (45 degrees) especially visible on light backgrounds. Is this normal on the Moto G 2014?
hey i see the same lines, when screen is off and with the light of sun. I have a new Moto G 2014 to, like 5 days .-
This is the touch sensor grid
Digitizer touch sensor thingy. Its pretty obvious in direct sun light, nothing to worry about
Sent from my XT1068 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm talking about diagonal lines visible on the screen when it's on. Not the lines you see with the screen off in sunlight those don't bother me. It probably has to do with the digitizer though.
I currently own 2 2014 moto g's. My first one was brought at launch and the screen is perfectly clear, my second one was brought a few weeks ago and the screen has diagonal lines which can be seen best at a 45 degree angle. They must be different screen manufacturers.
I'm going send back my second one for a replacement as I can't live with the diagonal lines knowing how much better my first one looks.
Can you try to click a photo of it?
I have uploaded some photos here I would call it a kind of grid effect. Again my first moto g 2014 does not have this and is clear at all angles.
That looks like the same problem I'm having. Might send my phone back as well.

i have that effect to, but i guess is normal, maybe because is gorila glass 3 ?
I do think it is normal for that particular screen. Again my other moto g 2014 doesn't have the lines so motorola must be using different screens.
well there is only one option to be sure, nobody or someone can email Motorola support Moto Care with those images and see what they replay ?
moto g with diagonal lines EXCHANGED PHONE
I just exchanged my moto g because of this problem. they had an older one which had no issue with the screen l, no such lines on the LCD, and the white didn't have an yellow tint as my previous had...
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHANGING THE MOTO G IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUES...
Not sure if this counts as reviving an old thread, but I got a replacement Moto G 2nd Gen about 2 weeks ago after my 1st one had a display issue where the glass touched the bottom part of the screen too much.
The replacement that I got has the diagonal lines which are very visible, as well as the lines of pixels much more visible than before. The screen looks much more purple rather than black when turned off too? I got the 1st one in November for reference, reckon Motorola are now using a different type of screen that causes this? Because I have no idea. I also noticed that the back panel of the case was much more flimsy and appears to have a different version number on it.
Reckon I should return this one or am I just going to get the same problem

Its not a 'problem' as such, afaik all the newer moto g's have the same thing. Mine does. It's just the type of screen thats used on the phone.

I have recently returned my Moto G 2014 that has this problem for a full refund and got the new 4G version. This problem is now fixed and the screen has returned to the 'old' style where it is black with no purple tint, no diagonal lines and has better quality.
Posting here just so everyone knows if they are curious.

What color on moto maker (if its there) is the color of the midnight blue Nexus 6?

I would suspect that the midnight blue back color of the Nexus 6 isn't on the moto maker for the Moto X 2014 but I am curious if anyone know what the color is or what the closest color would be. I assume the back is some shade of blue but I guess it could be black, does anyone happen to know on here? (I know this is no the N6 forum)
I thought slate at first but slate is very light, the only other color I can think of is navy blue.
Thanks

have to say as someone who went from a pure bamboo/white moto x, to midnight blue nexus 6, and back to a pure white/cw moto x... i can tell you that if there is indeed a midnight blue for the moto x, steer clear. geez, that phone smudged like crazy. the main part of the back got greasy, but particularly around the nexus lettering. it was pretty strange actually. it was like a grease halo effect. no matter how non-greasy you think your hands are and how much you've wiped it on your pants leg, five minutes later (seriously) it'll get smudged again.

I have a Nexus 5 so I know how easily the back can show grease. After I posted this thread I found out that the black back is more of a soft touch material so I think I will be getting that now. I went to an AT&T store to test it out and it also has a better grip to it than the colored backs.
