Hi,
I recently gave my dad my HTC One (M7) after upgrading to the M8. The M7 was locked to the Bell (Canada) network so I purchased an unlock code on-line. My dad's current phone was an HTC Desire Z that he was using with an AT&T Go Phone SIM in the U.S. We went to a U.S. AT&T shop and told them we would like to switch his service from the HTC Desire to the M7 so they gave us a new SIM card. It prompted for the unlock code - which worked perfectly and the phone connected to the AT&T network. So the phone works and will connect to different networks - the problem is that we have lost the ability to select "Search Networks" or "Select Automatically" (these options are now greyed out). It seems like the phone is stuck on "Select Automatically" and I will explain why. We are Canadian and live in a town that borders the U.S. and my parents are retired and spend a lot of time in the U.S. The phone is now constantly switching back between the Rogers (Canadian carrier) and AT&T (U.S. carrier) - it picks whatever has the strongest signal i guess. The HTC Desire Z was also an unlocked Canadian phone but it was able to manually select networks. I have done some research on-line and also chatted with an HTC tech. Here is what I have tried so far:
Factory Reset from Settings menu
Factory Reset from boot
Partition Cache Wipe
Phone is updated to latest software version
Tried changing network mode to all the different options
I'm hoping that someone else has come across this issue and knows how to fix it. I don't want to root the phone and install different ROMs - i shouldn't have to do that. Could the issue have something to do with the new SIM supplied by AT&T? Is the phone not fully unlocked?
Thanks,
Andrew

I don't know if this will work but can you make the Roger's APN the defaut in settings? Settings >> Mobile data >> Access point names >> select the three dot menu >> New APN then enter the data and make it the default.

Hi majmoz
I will try this tonight after work - currently there are no APN's set up on his phone - he doesn't have data at the moment and the old phone didn't have any set up either. I post the results later this evening.
Thanks,
Andrew

Hey guys, I unlocked my Sprint HTC one with the Sim Unlocker app and followed directions as instructed but for some reason I cant get it to pick up service. I tried switching it to every radio combination (WCDMA, GSM- only etc) but no luck. Im running Rage's ROM and Im everything But S-off. I even flashed the initial radio to see if that it but to no avail, Im tring to using it on the ATT network.
Any input?
If there anyway that I can manually get the dialer to ask me for the network unlick code ? I have My SPC and Unlock code but I still havent input them into the device
I am having the same problem too. I have successfully sim unlocked my Sprint HTC One, dialed *#*#4636#*#* and changed the connection to GSM mode (only & perf). When I tried to go to tab "Available GSM networks", both option "Search networks" and "Select automatically" are grayed out. I was able to select ATT in the "Access point names" but the phone still won't connect to the network.
Anybody could shine any light on this problem?

Ok, here is what I did. First, do the #*#*4636*#*# and change to WCDMA PREFERRED mode, I know it sounds off, but do it. Next go to mobile network settings and change it to gsm mode. Reboot. Once rebooted go back to mobile network settings and go to Availavle GSM networks. and select the one you want, I use T-mobile. You MIGHT have to reboot again, sometimes I do, sometimes I dont.
Hi. I live in Europe, I was jealous of you guys, so I ordered Moto on ebay. To save some cash, I ordered locked AT&T version. Everything went great, I was able to unlock the phone, it accepted the sim card, I can make calls and send SMS. So far, so good.
Then I turned on mobile data. And...nothing happend.
To clarify: Using the same sim card, I was able to use mobile data on good old Samsung i9000, so the data is activated. It's there and should work.
So I started looking around in settings, tried turning on the data roaming and looked into the "about phone" section.
Here's what it says:
Mobile Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
Is there something I need to do to "force" the connection, or should I rather discuss this with my mobile network provider?
Thanks for any help
P.S. I tried the usual stuff like reboot and eject sim and put it back, I even switched from ART back to Dalvik, The phone is running latest avaliable KitKat and is not rooted.

You didn't mention whether you checked the APN settings. My guess is that because you purchased a locked AT&T device and then unlocked it, you don't have an APN setup for your European provider. APN will be in Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks ->Access Point Names. If you go in there and either there is nothing listed or it's not the APN your mobile provider recommends, you will need to manually create the proper APN. I'm sure a quick Google Search for your provider's APN settings on Android will get you the answer.

I knew I was missing something important "Copied" the APN settings from old phone and it worked like charm. Thanks a lot
Interesting thing is that on that old Samsung, I tried new ROM every month or so and never had this problem. The phone just "knew" what to do. Guess these are the perks of unlocked devices, right?

Glad that worked. Correct, Custom ROM's often self-provision based on a database of Carrier/APN's.
Greetings, im sure this is a common issue that ive seen, i received a HTC One M7 Sprint, it is sim unlocked BUT... can't select GSM/UMTS mode, it reverts to last used mode (if lte/cdma was selected and I choose gsm/umts, it reverts to lte/cdma...)
Is a NV problem, or radio problem? can be corrected?
Thanks a lot!

I've seen problems like this as well.. try flashing a custom Sense ROM and see if that solves your problem.

You have to override the network connection, assuming you are "sim-unlocked"
open the dial pad type *#*#4636*#*#
Tap "Phone Information"
scroll down to "Set preferred network Type:" & select one of the GSM options from the drop down menu
Check the GSM Service is "In Service"; if not repeat the last step and select another option
Goto Settings > Mobile Data> select GSM
Goto Available GSM Networks, it will attempt to connect and probably fail to find service providers, you can keep trying manually or select "don't ask again" and redo -GSM network provider will eventually popup
select the GSM network
goto Access Point names
edit access point to carrier
Doing the last parts from memory since I've removed my GSM SIM (Family Mobile) and GSM stuff won't show up on my settings
recently i have done with that. Im currently looking if it can be done with HTC Desire 816 (to convert to gsm, since it carries with cdma system). Maybe can be done, maybe not

ask in that devices thread there people will have the same device as you do
I have a 1058 moto x that was originally on the Element mobile CDMA network (which is now owned by att)
Anyway It was working in the Dominican republic no problem with a local Sim. I was trying to do sonetging , I can't remember what, and I bumped the drop down menu in test mode with all the radio options and selected a new one. So after reading I got back in selected the one that seamed right and it wouldn't select. Nor will it go off of global mode in Network settings. I can't select Sim settings anywhere. So now I have no service. The thing that kills me is that I have been using this phone for two weeks with no problem. Did I lock it to something? Please help or send me a link to a related post. I couldn't find anything like this when looking.
I'll keep it short. I have rooted Sprint Note 5. Currently with TWRP recovery and MOAR rom. I called Sprint to "Unlock" the phone for me (wasn't financed, I purchased it outright on Swappa...previous owner apparently used it on Ting) and the unlock went through. Now, I'm not sure whether the unlock I did was a domestic unlock or just an unlock to use the phone overseas. My fault for not finding out.
Fast forward. I went over to MetroPCS yesterday with my Sprint Note 5. The sim card was accepted and I called MetroPCS so that they can register the IMEI of the phone in their database. I quickly tested data and sent a text but didn't bother making a phone call. Long story short for the life of me I cannot get a phone call to go through.
I've tried two different MetroPCS APN settings and messed with Network settings (LTE/CDMA and Automatic) The best I can do is get data working and text messaging but not phone calls. I went into MetroPCS today to see if one of the morons could see if they could do something with it. The guy went into Network Mode and changed it to the GSM/whatever option (don't have the phone in front of me ATM) and sure enough the phone was able to make a phone call and the data worked!
However, around 30 minutes later I try to use data to update an app in the PlayStore and I'm notified that I have no connection. I go back and forth between Network settings and I'm back to square one where I can only get data and messaging. The GSM Network Mode no longer shows a signal.
Soooooooo, if anyone can get me through this mess I will give $20 for your time and energy! I'm about to just flash stock Sprint firmware and sell this piece of crap on Ebay and get different phone for MetroPCS. This thread is my last attempt at finding a resolution!
@SantinoInc, have you checked with Sprint if they have locked the device?
What bands does Metro use for 4G/LTE and is it compatible with a Sprint-based device?
Try using 2G/3G mode instead of the 4G/LTE mode.
What rom are you using?
