[Q] Root without Flashing? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Absolute beginner. Please help. Following questions very likely have been asked before and answered. In that case please direct me to the relevant thread/s.
1. I have just unlocked the bootloader of my kitkat (4.4.4 -- 10.5.1.A.0.283);
2. Is it possible to root without flashing a custom ROM?
3. Can we use Sony's flashtool (called Emma) to flash a non-sony ROM?

Flash prerooted stock based ROM
Same (or better) stock ROMs experience with extra ROOT and dual recovery and also no need for unlocking your bootloader
And you can't use Emma to flash non stock ROMs
And please do not post your questions here ok?

[Q] Bootloader

Hello,
so do you guys have a thread about bootloader unlocking? Didn't find it.
And do i need to unlock it? Just root and install recovery? Like in this rom thread forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/rom-existenz-v5-0-0-ultra-edition-10-4-t2349656 (i can't post clickable links yet)
And scroll down to how to install the rom and there it just is - install some firmware with flashtool, root and install recovery. Where is the bootloader stuff? Or it depends from the rom? help.

You only need an unlocked bootloader for non-stock based roms, such as Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android, AOSP etc and those based off them, as they need a custom kernel.
Stock based custom roms do not require an unlocked bootloader, as long as they use an unmodified stock kernel. The rom thread will specify if you need an unlocked bootloader in most cases.

all custom rom base on 4.4.4 stock have them already: CriskeloROM, kitslim, RomAur, except pure stock by NUT
mod here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2730097
This kind of thread not suppose to be here at all.
Super easy to get on NUT's rom..
Root whatever software you're on now with whatever tool you wish, I used TowelRoot on 4.4.2
Install/Update to the latest XZDR Recoveries, make a NANDROID BACKUP
Wipe everything, and flash latest NUT rom for 4.4.4
DeOdex that rom by flashing the ZIP he provides ****** VERY IMPORTANT YOU DEODEX ******
Install Xposed & Xperia Xposed by Serajr, reboot
(Optional) Confirm stable ROM still, make another BACKUP
Flash the 4K patches found on this forum - there's two popular ones, I've tried both, both work for me.
(Optional) Send me $950 so I can buy an Xperia Z2
Please do not continue to spam this thread.
I have reported it to the mods, the will deal with it.
And in answer. Yes there is, you will find a load of them in the search function.

More Qs re: flashing

Hi everyone. I have just rooted, installed a recovery and backed up my nandroid image, and am getting ready to flash a ROM on my XP. Few questions if you have time:
- I understand that I can flash a new ROM with a locked bootloader.
- Can I flash a new kernel alone with a locked bootloader? Or do I have to unlock my BL first?
- When I go to the 'Kernel' section here there are only three kernels listed - is this all there is available, or am I looking in the wrong spot?
Many thanks XDA!
Unlocking bootloader only allows you to flash custom kernel and you are looking in right section only.
Unlocking bootloader results in loss of all sorts of DRM keys i.e. Bravia Engine, clear audio+, clear bass etc.

-It is usually a must to unlock the bootloader to flash a custom kernel
-The 3 kernels are Williams, DooMKernel and the Nayyak Kernel all of them server different purposes:
*Williams aims to be the best of both worlds with one supporting SONY firmwares and the other supporting CM/MIUI
*DooMKernel aims to be the best in the original SONY Firmware market offering a variety of features
*Nayyak is a minimalist sort of kernel like Williams
-Some ROMs Include their own KERNEL so READ their threads CAREFULLY (They are usually incompatible with locked bootloaders)

Wrong. It is used for CM based ROM's.
Anyway, don't use this one as development has stopped because the dev nolonger has an Xperia SP.

i fixed my phone today and try unlocking it,
i rooted it with towelroot, and even putted recovery, but the bootloader is locked, and flashtool tells me there is no offciail way to unlock it,
can i unlock it?
(my ultimate goal is to install a custom rom on it and flash puresound, so my question is, can i install a rom, without bricking my device, with my locked bootloader)

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and go to service info / configurations / rooting status and if it's saying Bootloader unlock allowed YES so you can unlock your bootloader and if NO so you can't
If the ROM you are trying to install is stock based so you can install it without unlocking
But the custom ROMs need custom kernel and the custom kernel need unlocked bootloader so you can't keep it locked while you running custom ROM because that will brick your device for sure

Sorry bro @androidfreak70
I correct you because you give not good info, he can install a custom rom based on stock with a locked bootloader so he dont need to unlock it, he needs only to unlock it if he wanna install a CM/PAC or OASP Roms because those roms needs an unlocked bootloader and not the custom stock based roms like Excistinz/MoonWalker or Ulitmate Pure etc !

Hey guys i'm new here, and I don't want to hijack this thread but my question is almost the exact same, I've got the xperia Z c6606, rooted on towel root, I know i can flash roms based on the stock kernel, I was looking at Ihackers rom for the xperia z, it says it will work with locked or unlocked bootloader but in the devices it says it will only work with two other devices, I forget which, c6602 and c6603 I think, sorry if I'm wrong, I'm just curious on where I stand, I just don't want to brick the phone, and the information conflicts.

Looking for untouched official stock rom image of Xperia SP...

Tried different custom roms and now want to install official rom again.
I just want an untouched image (or at least without ANY modifications) so I can get feel of JB again.
Please share links from where I can download it and install on my SP.
Thanks in advance. :highfive:

The FTFs online are untouched and you can download and flash them safely. This require Googling by yourself
However if you still paranoid, you can resort to the XperiFirm method.
you can try UItimate PureXSP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658043
