[Q] Is the AT&T Moto X currently rootable? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have seen all of the rooting threads for this phone , but none have mentioned AT&T's version of this phone. Would I be able to unlock the bootloader and root this phone, or will I have to wait until an alternative rooting method appears?

just give it a try and let us know how it goes.

It's not going to work, he needs an unlocked bootloader, and that will never be officially available for the AT&T version. There could potentially be a third party way in the future. The 2013 AT&T and Verizon version is barely getting it now with "Sunshine" unlock method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487

New Moto X owner, have some starter questions.

Hello everybody, I just got my Moto X and I have to say it is a lovely device better than I expected in terms of how it feels in the hand. Really compact device.
I have some questions:
1. My phone has 4.4.2 but OTA fails to update it to 4.4.3. Is there any software that I can use to update the phone?
2. Is there a flashtool software where I can flash different .ftf fies?
3. Root option for 4.4.3 available?
1. There are a few threads discussing the 4.4.3 OTA, and what condition your phone must be in to receive/install the OTA. For example -> [XT1053] 4.4.3 OTA Update Zip and Android™ 4.4.3, KitKat® Rolls Out to Moto Devices I'm sure if you READ it, you'll find information that will solve your issue. Or if you post details of your phone, carrier, any tweaks you've made to it, etc...
2. I do not believe so.
3. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you *can* Root 4.4.3. If you have a LOCKED bootloader, you *can not* root 4.4.3.

Locked or unlocked bootloader? What carrier?
I have an unlocked Dev Ed Moto X running TMobile, and it accepted the 4.4.3 OTA update. I first had to revert entirely to stock 4.4.2, though.

My phone is branded with an AT&T logo on the back. Model number is xt1058 and I'm running stock 4.4.2
I don't know about the bootloader though, how can I verify that?
I would really like to update this to 4.4.3 and root it, although it's not that easy I see.
Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm even considering throwing in a bounty

Ok... here we go...
4.4.3 is not out for the ATT XT1058 yet, so you can't update to it. You need to wait for ATT to start making it available.
ATT XT1058 has a locked bootloader, and Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes. Your only option to unlock the bootloader is *IF* (or maybe when) the Chinese WebSite/MiddelMan comes back to selling bootloader unlock codes. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
There is no option to root 4.4.3 when you have a locked bootloader.
If you want usable root on the X you need two parts 1. Root Exploit, and 2. An Exploit that allows for disabling Write Protection. There is now a Root Exploit for 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader, but there is not an exploit to disable write protection. This means if you'd root, then anytime you power your phone off/on, the changes, root, etc is lost. And Root style apps that need to write to /system and the like, CANT.
there is no root option for 4.4.3 with a locked bootloader

Thanks for the info fist of all. Not very good news but it is what it is.
I took a look at that link and apparently the newer models of Moto X are most likely to get an unlock code. My phone is from 2013 most probably but I don't know how to find out exactly. Can you advise on this matter as getting a code from that asian dude seems the next step for me.

There are several ways to find out your date code.. The easiest is to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, and select the option for Bar Codes. The date displayed there is the build date.

Thanks, it appears that my phone is from August 2013. I will try to get a code. Before I do that just want to double check it with you.
Once I get the unlock code, I can root 4.4.2 that I'm currently running and also future updates released by AT&T/Motorola in the near future including the 4.4.3?

Correct. Once you unlock your bootloader (which is DESTRUCTIVE, so BACKUP EVERYTHING To Your PC, or Cloud, before you do the process), you will be able to root any android version by flashing a 3rd party recovery (like TWRP), booting to the 3rd party recovery and installing SuperSU.

Zero chance. Sorry.
I mean...it's certainly possible to ask them politely, but they still won't give it to you....guaranteed.
I'm guessing you have a 2013 variant since the middleman couldn't help you?

Yes, a late 2013 model. He said that the database could become available again in the future...
If I want to contact AT&T, what would be the best way? Phone/email? I'm not an US citizen nor living in US.

I'm not an AT&T customer, so I can't advise on contact info, but I can tell you that you will be wasting your time if you even try. The chance that they will give you the code is exactly 0% no matter how nicely you ask them.
You might consider selling your AT&T XT1058 and buying one that can be unlocked, such as the XT1053, or the XT1058 Roger's variant if unlocking the BL is that important to you.
Good Luck

You have zero chance getting a boot loader unlock code from Att or Moto.
And If you are not living in the USA, then you are likely not an ATT customer, so they won't even talk to you.

[Q] Question about updates

My Moto X was locked to AT&T. However I got it unlocked from a website. Everything works fine to my knowledge. However I was curious if it will receive firmware updates? Does unlocking the phone mess up anything with the carrier? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

There can be some confusion when it comes to unlocking.
There are 2 things you can unlock. You can SIM-Unlock your phone, which will allow it to be used on any GSM carrier. This is what you are referring to. It does not affect the software or system in any way. You will continue to receive updates without issue.
You can also unlock your 'bootloader'. This allows you to root your device and flash custom software. AT&T does not allow Moto to give bootloader-unlock codes out for any AT&T branded phones, but there is a guy from china who is -selling- bootloader-unlock codes.
If you were to obtain a bootloader unlock code, and root your device, then you would have to take special steps anytime a new software update comes out. If you are not interested in root, none of this is important.
Assuming you have only SIM-Unlocked your phone, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. No it does not 'mess anything up' with the carrier.
Good Luck

[Q] AT&T XT1058 can i flash it to a generic rom?

Hi, I got an AT&T XT1058 from ebay. I'm in teh UK so I'd really like to flash it with a stock UK ROM. I've had a look on here and with the huge amount of info I can't figure out if this is possible and which rom to use. it's 4.4.2 that's on the phone at teh moment which i believe can't be downgraded or unlocked easily, is that right?
any help would be greatly appreciated
cheers
To flash any Rom besides the Stock, Signed Moto ROM for your carrier and model X, you need to unlock the bootloader.
While Moto doesn't give out the Bootloader Unlock Code for the ATT USA XT1058, since you have 4.4.2 on it still, you should be able to use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader. (NOTE: please boot into fastboot/bootloader on the phone, and verify the version on the 2nd line is 30.B4 which is correct for 4.4.2).
Once you use sunshine, you can flash 3rd party recoveries, roms, etc.
While I have NOT done it, I've seen posts of ATT US Xt1058 owners flashing with Parts of the XT1053 rom to remove bloat, etc. (flashing the modems will likely change which wireless bands the phone can connect to). I do not advise flashing another carrier's rom. It could get messy, especially around UPDATE time. And I've seen some lose Cellular and WIFI flashing the wrong modem files.
One final thing. The ATT US XT1058 is SIM/Carrier locked too. So in order to use a non-ATT SIM in it you'll need to obtain a SIM unlock code. You should be able to get this from any web site selling unlock codes on the internet.

To unlock the bootloader on the ATT XT1058 Moto X, there are only two possible ways..
The China Middleman thread (in the general section), although he only has codes for certain date range of phones (depends on the Assembly Date of your phone), BUT he has recently stopped responding again. There is no telling if/when it will start up again
Sunshine, which doesn't work with 4.4.4. However you can always try it since it wont charge you if it doesn't work. (i.e. it checks your phone, if it will work, if wont, it tells you and exits without charging you).
4.4.4 can't be temp rooted either.
So you are pretty much stuck stock ATT, and then just get it sim unlocked to use it with your carrier.

For the Rogers XT1058, Moto does offer the Bootloader Unlock code for free from their web site -> https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth it will void your warranty
The GSM Dev Edtion is the XT1053. It has different radio/modem files, its hardware supports different bands (less LTE bands). I never recommend flashing another model's ROM as we have seen loss of cellular in some cases, where even flashing the original firmware back didn't fix.
Once you unlock your bootloader and root, you can remove and freeze any bloat on the phone (freezing is preferred because the next OTA might require it to be there).

Only if you can't unlock your boot loader. But as I said, moto does give out the unlock codes on their web site for the Rogers xt1058
Also, without unlocking the boot loader, you can only flash the rom for your phone model and its carrier branding.

Thank you for the answers

[Q] Moto X 2013 not receiving updates

I have Moto X (2013), I want to know why my phone is still on 4.4.2 KitKat and not getting any newer updates? Others running 4.4.4 KitKat and about to get Android L, what's wrong with my phone? I have tried resetting my phone couple of times and tried Motorola Device Manager too but no luck. I don't know whether I have XT1049 or XT1058 because I got this phone from a friend, he just gave it away and I am not living in a country where I can get Motorola Support. I thought I had XT1049, I contacted Republic Wireless, they checked my IMEI number and told me that it's not their phone, I contacted Motorola's online support they told me by looking at the IMEI number it's XT1058 AT&T phone but when I connect my phone to my computer it says "XT1049 is connected to the computer" and in pictures "details" I can see that the picture is taken by XT1049, I am so confused. OTA updates are really up to your carrier and/or Motorola. You will seen no updates, until THEY make them available.
When the bootloader is locked, you can only flash official roms (or parts like recovery) for your model/carrier, which are digitally signed by Motorola. Attempts to flash anything else, will fail.

As for unlocking the bootloader, and/or rooting.. see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...w-root-moto-x-confusion-t2826159/post54671918
Why would you want to unlocked the bootload? So you could flash either a totally custom rom, or a rom meant for another carrier/model 2013 X which might be newer. (like some ATT XT1058 users like to flash Rogers XT1058 rom to get rid of the ATT bloat).
I really know nothing about the "ACG Regional Carriers" variant of the Moto X. I'm not sure if it might be the same hardware as another variant, only with a different ROM flashed on it. So I don't know if its safe to flash another carrier's ROM on it. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can try 3rd party roms like CM11 or CM12.
Unlock the BL and flash custom ROMs
You may want to edit your post and remove your imei number. It can be hijacked and leave you with a non functioning device. (no calls or texts or data anyway.)

Unlocked bootloader for at&t moto x 2014

Hey does anyone know if or when the moto x 2014 will get its bootloader officially unlocked by Motorola. Was researching on the site and it seems as though Verizon models are getting their bootloaders officially unlocked. Since they said the carrier models aren't getting marshmallow they could at least unlock our bootloaders so wencan get root and flash some roms. Or if anyone knows how to get it done unofficially..... I'm all ears. Thanks
I'm unlocked on Verizon, but att I don't know if or when. If you haven't upgraded above 5.0 you can root with mofo and unlock with sunshine.

That's the thing, motorola never announced that verizon got it. It just magically started to work when someone tried to unlock his bootloader then they told all of us. There is no way to know if it will ever be able to be unlocked. But everyone can keep trying, maybe one day it will work.
