Android L? - LG Optimus L90

I'm kind of a newcomer when it comes to technology. So I'm wondering, since the android phones are running on 32 bit chips right now, including our sd400, would they be able to run the 64 bit android L and if yes how? this puzzles me a lot since its coming out soon and im wondering if we'll get an upgrade

No 64 bit. Android L, who knows. (probably yes)
Sent from my LG-D405n using XDA Free mobile app

If there will be no problems when porting, the Android L will work for sure on the L90. 2013 Nexus devices have 32 bit CPUs but they already can run a developer preview of Android L.

Curious to know whether there would any effort to get windows 8 (once they release the ARM preview) running on the nook color? or if anyone would be interested in this?

The lack of drivers would make getting Windows 8 on the Nook incredibly difficult, if it'll even meet the minimum specs.
Indeed, but minimum specs shouldn't be a problem, they demonstrated it running on a single core 1 ghz with 1gb of memory.

1ghz arm or 1ghz atom/x86?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
The preview version is only available for x86 and x64 right now. We would need an ARM preview build. I don't know that we'll see that as the ARM version will probably be OEM only (my guess).
I wonder if this would be worth the effort. The ARM tablets are likely to be priced below the iPad which makes them pretty affordable. Also, doesn't Windows 8 require DirectX 11 support?
The previews I saw had them running on AMD fusion processors running DirectX 11 with 2 GB of RAM. Don't know if it's required or not though.
Windows Developer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
Plan to support ARM in the future but not on the Dev Edition.
Check here for Windows 8 running on ARM
http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/14/windows-8-arm-tablets-reference-designs-nvidia-qualcomm-ti-shown/
So hopefully they release an arm version of the peview soon, specially since the arm version requires different apps, no?

Forget Windows 8 on the Nook Color, it would be too slow anyway. What we need are
1) New Market fixed for CM7!
2) Ice Cream! Since Honeycomb is not going to go to AOSP this side of he-ell.

You hit the nail on the head. Even if we got it on the nook, windows tablet version will be hundreds of megabytes in size just for the rom. IF it did run, highly unlikely considering it will need a whole new set of video, sound and touchscreen driver modifications...the software size alone would choke up the nook. Speed would just not be usable for real world applications.
Why? To run MS Office on Nook Color natively? If yes, then we may all to upgrade our SSD to 64G or more. The existing Developer Preview Edition Bare System eats 10G storage space, not counting additional storage to keep all installed drivers or program libraries.

The ARM version is not included in the dev preview and will most likely be much smaller. That being said I still doubt Windows 8 would be a good experience.

Yes. totally agree with you. But very doubt if existing Win32 applications could be transform to ARM version natively? Or Nokia are going to launch any new toys for Windows mobile soon?
Windows 8 for ARM was demoed back in June for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 3 MSM8060 dev tablet, you can have a look in my blog, the post abound Windows 8 on HP Touchpad. It's not flawless, but not a slouch either. Windows 8 in June was certainly less optimized for ARM than now, that's for sure.
However, as I see it, in 2012 some streamlined/trimmed version of Windows Phone 8 might be available for OMAP3xxx devices (about 5 mln of them, NC included). I wouldn't put much faith in hardware rendering on NC before Jelly Beans, so we'll see.

I'm running Windows 8 on my nook right now inside a xen hypervisor... It performs okay but sometimes lags when I'm trying to do 3D modeling with Maya. I'd love to share my ROM with you but I don't condone piracy and won't want to violate any NDAs

Jolla Sailfish for Galaxy S - Is it possible?

First of all, my apologies if this thread belongs to Q&A - I was not sure mods.
I read about Jolla Sailfish OS being open source. Is it possible to port it on Galaxy S? I have seen no discussion about it. Sailfish OS does look promising.
Regards
DJ
I'm curious, what is the advantage of Jolla vs android?
For a short while I was excited to hear ubuntu was making its way to phones, then with a mix of going from ubuntu to arch on my desktop and the realization that ubuntu doesn't have much of an advantage over android anyway I kinda forgot about it...

Sailfish uses mer as core of its system. I once read a blogpost...see above...that they try to make the display server wayland, the new xserver replacement compatible with android graphic drivers. I think it will be possible to get the rest of the drivers also somehow working....well i want sailfish too but atm i can only wait

Looks okay, but there's nothing really groundbreaking about it, or anything that's a real advantage over android considering the customisation you can do with android, or am I missing something?
I had a look at a couple of demo videos for it but I can't see any great things about it that would make me want to change OS. I've already got a hidden status bar(expanded desktop), on off toggles for things I like to be able to quickly switch(quick settings), and nice looking customised home screens.
Controlling apps from their multitasking thumbnails was the only real new thing I saw, and about the only use for that is pausing music or skipping tracks (which was obviously the way it was demonstrated in their videos, because it's pretty much the only use for such a feature). With any other app you need to be able to see what you're doing, so even that is a bit pointless.
Oh, and sailfish is a silly name.

It`s not about customizations or having something special. It is new and hopefully wont start lagging after one week of heavy use
Proud owner of an ASUS TF300T stock and the "old faithful" SGS i9000 powered by AndroSlim
Anything new is welcome with an open heart. It's not about jumping ship to a new OS ... But trying them is what I am interested in the most.
I still want to user Ubuntu Touch on daily basis but it's the app ecosystem the issue for my daily use.
Is any here can port sailfish os for us
As using android on this device is very laggy even if u flash GB (2.3.x)

Kit Kat's memory optimizations for our nooks?

Hey all. So it's looking like 4.4 has some memory management changes for devices with low ram. Think it would help our tablets? http://www.androidguys.com/2013/10/31/notable-features-android-4-4-kitkat/
Yes, but only after we move to android 4.4. We are on 4.3 now.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using xda premium
Yes, it should improve performance on all devices with KitKat, compared to devices with earlier Jelly Bean builds. However, as leapinlar mentioned, only when we move to Android 4.4. We're on Android 4.2.2 right now stably, with Android 4.3 nightlies.
A little off-topic, what I'd like to see with Android 4.4 is devices still stuck on Gingerbread with dual-core processors and 512MB RAM updated to KitKat. That would be astonishing, but perhaps a little too much to ask for.
I really hope to see kitkat come out for the hd real soon and hopefully the optimizations will give us a decent performance boost
I imagine the biggest hurdle will be getting the drivers for the components that make up the device such as the TI SoC. Remember, Google isn't updating the Galaxy Nexus, even though it would likely breath new life into the device, and I heard it's because of the lack of driver support from TI since they are no longer in the SoC business
Galaxy Nexus already has some unofficial 4.4 ROMs. Motorola Defy also got one. And it looks like TI released new drivers for omap4.

obviously asking for timeframes isnt a thing when people have actual jobs and lives which come first.

64-bit software development

I just ordered the 510 from a German Ebay reseller to get a jump on Android ARMv8 64-bit optimization. The specs aren't terribly important since it's going to spend its life tethered to my PC on my desk. I think as a budget Android device, the Moto G is a much better choice, but being the first 64-bit device available, I had to buy it. Hopefully some of the clever people on XDA can figure out how to root it and get Android L running in 64-bit mode before HTC gets around to doing it.
Wheres the development?

There is a kernal available to download that allows root access. The thread is clearly headed 64 bit root. And of course it is easy enough to unlock the boot loader. All we need now is a recovery so roms can be flashed

No worries. I needed to get going on ARMv8 development, so I got a Nexus 9 and iPad mini 2. At this point, the HTC 510 working in 64-bit mode will just be to satisfy my curiosity about how slow the QC410 is compared to the Apple A7 and NVidia K1 Denver.

Android M support (Google I/O)

Is anyone here watching the Google I/O? I think the new Android M stuff looks really exciting, but if I've understood them correctly, the Nexus 4 won't get it officially (I think only devices from Nexus 5 upwards were listed, but I wasn't fully concentrated on the stream when it was mentioned).
If the Nexus 4 will be excluded from Android M, how likely is it going to be that it will be ported unofficially, and how good are these ports usually quality-wise? I would really like to stay with the N4 for a while, the hardware is still really good in my opinion.

The I/O was talking about dev previews for 5,6,9, and Player. Hoping M arrives on the Nexus 4. Yet, Apple is still supporting a 4 year old phone with only 512MB of ram.
I.m lookimg forward for M. BUT I love my N4 with lollipop so it wont be end of days for me if we dont get M N4 with L is all that i wanted from a phone.

You're right, it was about the dev previews. I hope we will know more by the end of the I/O. Would be a shame if they aren't gonna update the Nexus 4 as the hardware seems completely capable of handling Android M (i don't really notice a lot of a difference in performance even comparing my 2.5 year old encrypted N4 to a brand new Galaxy S6).
You probably can't really compare a Nexus device with an Apple device though, Apple generally seems a lot more consumer-friendly in that regard (also in terms of repairs and so on). The rumors for Google were, that Android devices will get the newest Android updates for 2 years, and security updates for another year after that. Let's see if this turns out to be true or not..
Nexus support periods are going very rigid.. N4 most likely won't get M. Time to buy a new phone I guess.
We will not have Android M Dev Preview, much less the final version.
The way is a super-mega-awesome-dev to the port of M Dev Preview for us. I find to be difficult because there are not M Preview for Nexus 7 2013 to help a little, which has a similar hardware with our old N4.

If not a port of a factory image, the Nexus 4 will still get custom ROM support with M. If Devs can build CM12.1 on devices that never got past Jellybean, getting M on the Nexus 4 should be a cinch in comparison.
I'd be surprised if the N4 got official M from Google. The word is that from now on Nexuses will get 2 years of updates. Us N4 owners are just lucky that we were given a device so awesome it's still capable and relevant 2.5 (and counting) years later.
It would be awesome if we get it....there no question of the hardware being capable as there are no major changes, i guess.
@sykopompos
I don't know if it helps, but I downloaded Nexus 5 latest 5.1.1 (LMY48B) factory images and Nexus 5 - Preview M images and extracted both of them.
I found out that the bootloader and radio are exactly the same. I extracted the system.img from both of this builds and found out this differences:

I was thinking to download Nexus 4 latest 5.1.1 factory images and try to modify system.img based on this differences, it's a good start ? I think that I will need some kernel modifications (boot.img) after this steps, right?

Come on SeƱor
Relax, gonna be just fine, n4 and n7 2013 use nearly same proprietary blobs (not just gpu, but gps and NFC), so porting that to n4 will be piece of cake.

I doubt it'll even be 10%. M is nothing half as major as L.
It is almost certain that we won't get official M. We n4 users were lucky to get 5.1, not just ending at 5.0.
However, high quality ports from N7 or N5 will be available(imo). We won't have any trouble with custom rom support.
I am sure an awesome dev with help us out. Heck, my screen on my Galaxy S 4G (yes, prior to the S2) cracked last fall, I was running 4.4.4 ports on hardware with the terrible stats of the SGS4G thanks to the dev Ninjas at XDA.
I have no worries that while we might not get factory, we will get an as good, if not better port.
